Umpire Out Of Control – Suspension Warranted

The horrendous display of immaturity and hostility from home plate ump Brian Runge certainly didn’t result in the 11-0 thrashing the Mets took but it sure is much more interesting to talk about the day after.

If you missed it here’s a mini-recap.

.Brian Runge calls 2 consecutive strikes on Beltran to open the 4th. Carlos wasn’t happy with either and after strike 2 he looked down to the plate and said something to the ump.

Generally speaking baseball tradition sez you get more leeway to squawk on balls and strikes so long as you don’t show up the ump by turning around and facing him. Beltran behaved within these rules by not making eye contact or turning his head, rather LosB stared directly down at the plate while taking issue with the call.

Runge could’ve let it go but instead he stepped out from behind the plate to bait Beltran into a more demonstrative argument. When Carlos didn’t bite Runge bent and dusted off home plate.

By this time Jerry Manuel arrived to defend his player (that in itself is a refreshing sight for Met fans) and Runge finally had the argument he was looking for. Moments later Runge stepped forward and thrust his shoulder into the Manuel as he INTENTIONALLY BUMPED the Met manager(!) before throwing him out.

From here Jerry went BEZERK screaming so hard that his glasses practically flew of his face as he violently jawed at Runge. BMF had to laugh at the glasses but applaud Jerry for his fire on the field.

The Shea Faithful roared it’s approval of the fiery performance from a skipper not seen since the days of Bobby Valentine. As Manuel retreated to the dugout Beltran decided to let Runge know he thought the “bump and run” he pulled on Manuel was a chickenshit move (BMF concurs). Runge didn’t like that at all and ran Beltran who then EXPLODED unlike we’ve ever seen before! LosB was pointing his finger down into the umpire’s face like a bar fight was about to erupt. Beltran was also screaming like I didn’t know he was capable of.

.Honestly it was awesome to see and actually made this wipeout at the hands of the M’s semi-palatable.

BMF is calling for Brian Runge to be suspended for his actions. If a manager or player will lose salary and a week’s worth of games for bumping an ump the same should apply to rogue umpires who intentionally bump managers. Runge was as far out of line as BMF has ever seen an umpire and must be punished accordingly.

Anything less than a 7 game suspension w/o pay is too light for my taste.

As for the game… the Mets SUCKED

Oliver Perez was a disaster yet again and the only solace BMF can take is every erratic outing is costing that snake Boras millions of dollars off the contract. Honestly what kind of deal is Perez even gonna get at this point? I wouldn’t match this year’s 6.5M salary. I mean we can get a kid at league minimum to give us 5-5 with a 5.29 era for cryin’ out loud

.BMF has really had enough of this kid. It’s time to send him to AAA and let him try to get straightened out down there – if possible. But of course the Yankee series is this weekend and Perez is generally a Yankee killer so… this means he’ll probably be brilliant this weekend only to melt down again next week vs the Phils and we’ll be having this same conversation…

***

You had to know the Mets wouldn’t fare well against a knuckleballer even one like R.A. Dickey who entered the game with a 5.77 era. Sure enough aside from Tatis and Schneider, who each had 3 hits, not 1 Met starter so much as singled. I’ll always luv Hojo but honestly Rick Down was doing a better job.

I guess we have to give them a few more days to try and straighten things out but then it’s time to make a trade and I don’t mean a Trot Nixon player to be named later deal I mean a REAL trade where we give away a good player(s) in exchange for good players.

Otherwise it’s gonna be an empty Shea come August and September.

If I was somewhat of a leader I would trade Op. If I couldn’t trade him, I would release him and send a message that losing games in the first few innings for the rest of the team is not acceptable.

We all knew that when Op gave up those first two hits and loaded the bases with a walk that he was the Op that loses games for the team.

Offense stinks but a knuckler may be hard to hit regardless of the guy’s prior record.

    Screw that Ump.

He will get his, make no mistake about it.

    “BBWC80 Says:

    Let me get this straight?

The UMP baits Beltran then chest bumps Manuel and Manuel and Beltran get thrown out?

How does this all work again?”

Great play by play, BMF, I listened to the whole thing on the radio and it was great to hear the crowd going NUTS. Of course the boos throughout the game were just as loud. I thought it would light a fire under the roster’s butt.

    Brian Runge. R-U-N-G-E. Got it.

  3. The Coop Says:

I called it at the beginning of the season that we should trade Oh Pea - did anyone listen to me? Noooooooo. Coop for Gm! Coop for GM!

  4. The Lip Says:

It was great to see Carlos (who’s been my new favorite Met of late - his underacheiving play is now the best of the bunch! - the bar just had ot be lowered) go apes and Manuel, too. Unfortunatley it was too much too little too late - and both calls looked like K’s or close enough to what he’d been calling a K up ’til that point.

THAT said, Jerry should have busted Runge’s f–king face open. What a candy ass pu–y thing to do. Jerry really should have smacked that f–ker - HARD. LOved seeing LosB point the finger WITH THE BAT ON HIS SHOULDER. You KNOW he wanted to go Al Capone on the ump AND a 10 minute press interview after the game.

CARLOS: if you showed 1/1000 of this fire on any given night, I’d NEVER give you sh-t. On the other hand, you HAVE to swing at those close itches to protect the plate. While I love the theatrics, best to let the bat do the talking.

    Anyone up for a sweep?

  5. grenzo Says:

    eat my a lip

  6. Matt the Met Fan Says:

Jerry should have gone GANGSTA on him !!!

I agree BMF .. Trot Nixon? How much longer are they satisfied with putrid OF production?

Maybe Oh Pea for a hitter?

  7. The dude formerly known as Bill L. Says:

Cee-Oh-Oh-Pea for Gee EM! I’m down with that.

  8. Alexjersey Says:

    where’s the blade now Jerry ? ? ?

ok so let me get this right : Ollie sucks, and the one dessignated for assignment is Vargas ? ? i know he’s not a diamond but c’mon Omar… we need another 1B, is Pascucci still with the Zephirs ???

Btw about the game : no comments, i won’t waste my time writing… ohhh f*ck i just did that…

  9. Delgado's Dump Says:

The dude kinda went gangsta as it was, I mean he did get thrown out..what more do you want (without getting arrested)?

    “Lou Pinella style” or
    “Bobby Cox Style” or
    “Billy Martin style” or
“Pete Rose Style” or ……oh no, not….
    “Ozzie Gullien Style!!!?????”

    Any other styles out there?

    “ain’t nothin’ but a g-thang ba-be, two low down — goin’ crazae..”

Where can we get one of those “Mess” T-shirts?

I would seriously sport that. No Joke.

  10. USMF Says:

Um…Tony Armas has a 2.50 ERA, 20BB and 88ks 1.01WHIP in AAA, I think he can do better than Oh’Pea right about now.

Listening to Jerry after the game, it sounds like he is preparing to do anything it take to shake things up…Oh’Pea is going down, I can feel it…

I’m really missing Church…it’s real hard to score runs when you have no pop in your corner OF…especially when your 1st basemen is on the down side…

I loved seeing LosB and Jerry stand up for each other…

  11. The Lip Says:

I think Jerry is feeling the frustration. He sounded beat down last night. He needs help. There’s no ammo on the roster. What’s gonna happen w/out an acquisition and a big one at that? Uh-oh: Damion Easley is fired up. Here comes Tatis. Chavez. Nixon. Anderson. Delgado. Castillo (my LEAST favorite Met). This is big league baseball and we have guys who should play semi-pro. Nobody else wants these players. Give us you old, your tired. It’s NUTS! Even if my some miracle they do make October, they will be demolished. Not that that will ever happen. I’m glad that Fred Wilpon is so happy, though. Congrats, buddy.

  12. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

I just want to say, WE are the best fans in baseball.

LOVED seeing Beltran wake up and show some fire and Jerry go ballistic.

We have to make some trades pronto, we are not going anywhere with this lineup. Omar should be on the hot seat. We need some real f-ing players!! OP needs his lithium PRONTO.

Unlike Willie, Jerry isn’t in denial. He knows this team sucks and needs big changes. He’s no dope.

Hitless in nine at bats with RISP. Need I say more?

“Give us your old, your tired” cracked me up!

    COOP FOR GENERAL MANAGER!!!

  13. jerseysufferer Says:

I was at the game last night. i just want to say that my local Little League team, Macagna’s Funeral Home,(to say nothing of Vinnie’s Pizza) plays better than this bunch.

Omar got paid for building this team? ohmygod.

  14. dave Says:

i get met updates texted to me on my phone from mlb.com…and last night i got a text saying that after tuesday nights loss to the mariners, the mets have sent down vargas and have brought up carlos muniz…

just a little info i figured i’d share..

maybe O.P. should be sent down for a while..work out his problems in the minors..and bring him back when he’s corrected them..

  15. wynd Says:

I just can’t get over Beltran. Love it.

  16. wynd Says:

Or just keep OP down in the minors to train the myriad of catchers we seem to need.

  17. Matt the Met Fan Says:

yes ..surprised we didn’t call up another catcher ?

  18. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

I’m hoping for a start where we have no players under 40. Maybe Julio Franco is available to cover DWright and we can wheel out Keith at first base? I believe that Sandy Alomar Sr still has some moves, and we could always give Reyes a rest and put in Cow-Bell Man. Let’s drag Baroid out of retirement, we could use the increased power in the OF. We’ll give out free Mets-brand Geritol at the game and shoot canes into the crowd instead of t-shirts.

We’re going all the way in 2008!!! Even if its in a wheelchair!

  19. grenzo Says:

    haha..amazing fort greene..amazing

  20. Gehoff Says:

They should start but dumping Castillo and Delgado and Perez. Almost anything would be better.

It might be time to bring in Baroids.

  21. The Lip Says:

I just don’t think that these guys understand the concept of the count. It’s as if they don’t think up at the plate. Instead of the pitching coach coming out to speak to the battery, HoJo ought to come out in pinch situations and ask the batter, “what’s the count”. What do you THINK is coming. I’m so sick of seeing unintelligent baseball.

We’re being taken advantage of. Fred and Paris are “happy”. Yeah - they have people’s money. F–k this attitude from the owners. Happy - I bet. I’m not. I hate this version of the Mets. I’ve never disliked a team more than these guys. They’re not even a team.

  22. Sanchez Says:

Runge is a total freak - maybe his wife is cheating on him or maybe he’s just got his period but that douche was as far out of line as I’ve ever seen an ump

    SUSPEND HIS ASS

but i’m sure Selig will screw this up too

  23. wynd Says:

Maybe Manuel & Gardenhire should get together over a beer to start a petition:
    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080617&content_id=2947359&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

  24. El Duderino Says:

This aggression will not stand, man.

  25. Matt the Met Fan Says:

Get this: I’ll bet four Trot Nixons who can’t guess this: Name the four major league teams that are at least 5 games over .500 against teams with winning or .500 records?

The Rays 37-26 (.587 in 63 games). By far the toughest schedule in the game, having played only 12 games against losing teams.

The Red Sox 29-21 (.580 in 50 games).

    The Angels 24-17 (.585 in 41 games).

    The Mets 18-13 (.581 in 31 games)

That, of course, means the Mets are also 19-28 against team below or teetering around .500.

why do we consistently play down to the level of the bad teams and rise above on the good ones?.. this is what a .500 team is about .. and BTW, we are 5-5 in the last ten games ..yeecchh

  26. Sanchez Says:

those are typical Met numbers MtmF

  27. grenzo Says:

    ze germans are thru

  28. LoveEmHateEm Says:

Runge is a real douche. Krukie finally made sense on ESPN saying as much.

  29. Kilroy Says:

This ump is a joke, every time he Umps a Reds game he tries to make himself the star of the show.
