Are Beltran and Santana Ticket Decoys?

Call me paranoid. Call me pessimistic. I won’t deny either but I do get the sneaking suspicion that Carlos Beltran and Johan Santana are significantly less healthy than the organization is admitting to.

Because if the fanbase thinks these two stars will be playing chances greatly improve that people will spend their money on over priced tickets.

Are you telling me that after all this time the Mets  didn’t know Carlos Beltran wouldn’t be able to run? Even the back asswards Met medical department can’t be that inept… Can they?

Word has leaked that Luis Hernandez is slated to win the 2B job.

Wow that sure was an anti-climactic moment. I guess I should be excited by this but Hernandez ranks 5th on the excitement scale behind Emaus, Murphy, Castillo and Tejada… and Tejada isn’t even in the competition anymore.

Speaking of guys demoted to AAA, Jenrry Mejia was sent down to get consistent work as a starter and refine his curveball.

To me this says we’re still feeling the effects of Omar’s poor decision to push Mejia into a relief role when he should have been starting all along.

I’m really excited to see what Jenrry can do in the bigs as a starter.

BMF - Neither paranoid nor pessimistic..I’d call it realistic…when has this organization been able to really be upfront about injuries…if their ability to be truthful with the fans about the status of players is any indication they’re screwed in this Madoff mess

6,900 at the game last night! Almost a sellout. I always wondered why the Mets don’t play more night games. I guess it is because the booze must be flowing. Or maybe we don’t need the extra revenue!

I would expect not many starters, one or two will make the trip to Ft. Myers for the Twins and Redsox game the next two days. How many starters coming off a night game will actually want to ride a bus the next morning. Plus they are staying over night so the same players will play both games.

Yes they are being used as decoys. I was thinking the same thing when the Santana being shut down story came out. Really why bother trying to rush him and pitch him in July when we are already out of it? Makes no sense.

I believe the ushers are going to be having rotator cuff problems this year from waving fans down from the upper deck to fill in the TV seats so Shea 2 does not look like a Ghost town.

Anybody want to sit in the “Front Row”?

Special shout out to Cleon Jones!

OP sighting!…Even more important our one man “Lefty Specialist” came trotting out to a chorus of BOOS and walked the first batter!

He then proceeded to shut down the Nats to end the inning!. I am starting to smell a roster spot for our “Ringer”

When it comes to injuries, anything the Wilpons say is suspect. That said, is Alderson really going to start his tenure by lying to the fans? I certainly hope not.

I don’t see the need for the first half of that sentence.

I don’t see them as ticket decoys really. No one expects to see much of Santana this year, at least not until after the all-star break, if at all. And no one from the club is really saying anything different. Beltran is hardly driving ticket sales these days, and I’m sure most fans are adopting a “show me” attitude about his health. Not only that but the management, Alderson particularly seems to have been refreshingly honest with the fans about the teams plans and their unwillingness/inability to go after big names in this season’s free agent market. So, I don’t think they are overselling their injured stars to sell tickets. They have actually done some cool things out of necessity: they are selling cheaper seats and waiving the service charges on their short plans of 5 games and up. I think it’s a pretty good deal to get tickets in the “cheap seats” for six games for 99 bucks, and not have to pay any fees on top of that. And be able to pick all my own games on whatever day of the week I want. That’s not too shabby, even if it’s born out of desperation.
And hopefully it will be fun to watch our Mets this year, even if a post-season appearance appears unlikely at best. I can’t wait to see what Niese and Dickey do this year. I’m excited to see what’s next for Ike Davis, and to see how Reyes does in his walk year. And let’s not forget David Wright. Then there’s the Jason Bay story: will he make a comeback to his career levels? There is a lot of power on the bench this year with Paulino, Duda, Harris and Hairston. I think that Young, Buchholz, Capuano, Carrasco have all been excellent pickups by Alderson. Who isn’t interested in seeing what becomes of Bobby Parnell? And how will “The Big Pelf” do out of the #1 slot?
Hey, if I can’t be optimistic in March, when can I be? And in March, I’m buying tickets just to see my team, not any individual players, especially guys who’ve been here and I’ve seen plenty. I know they are hurt, and I don’t think anyone is trying to hide it.

  10. Met_Maven Says:

TDFKABL I couldn’t agree more, I wish more Met fans shared your POV. I think July /August, barring any setbacks, is a reasonable return for Santana. So I don’t see how the Mets are using Santana as a “sales pitch for season tickets”, ditto with Beltran, he’s been here for a while, and injured the past 2 years, I don’t see that as a huge sales pitch either.

Who did the Mets have in their lineup last year that’s so different from this year? They were fighting for 1st place at the all-star break. Once Beltran came back that screwed things up. Now, he’s realized he can’t play center and the willingness to play right plus the way our boys on the farm have played when called up should be a reason to want to watch them. Granted it wont set attendance records. And I’m NOT saying the team will win the wild card, or make the playoffs, but they will be competitive.

TDFKABL has it right, “if I can’t be optimistic in March, when can I be? And in March, I’m buying tickets just to see my team, not any individual players, especially guys who’ve been here and I’ve seen plenty.” I’m going to go out, see the team, hopefully they surprise us for the better.

dude and Met Maven have a great attitude- Lets go Mets !!!!!!!!!!!! Cut Ollie and Castillo !!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Met_Maven Says:

Thanks Cleon! I also like your attitude and passion for cutting Castillo and Ollie. I don’t wish them any bad fortunes I just want them off the team b/c they can’t help us moving forward. Maybe they can help another team and redeem themselves, I honestly hope they do, sadly, their tenure with the Mets should be over and when that day comes I wish them the best in their future endeavors.

  13. Florida Met Fan Rich Says:

Will the Mets draw 2 million fans this year?

  14. Met_Maven Says:

Its a good possibility. I’m sure they’ll run some promotions for the 25th anniversary of the 86 team. How come no one has mentioned this? For the 2oth anniversary they promoted the hell out of it. Every week they had something to give away and culminated with the 86 team reunion. How come nothing like that this year? Whatsupwithdat?

  15. cleonjones Says:

Thanks Met Maven- stay positive. We are going to need that this year.
