The Alou Factor & “Go Big Pelf” Shirt Part Deux

All of Wednesday’s “Pagan for Crisp” shenanigans could’ve been avoided if only the Mets were not lorded over by the dreadful Alou Factor.

Unfortunately we’re a ball club beholden to a LF’er who may never play again. Sorry folks, but until I see Alou in the batters box at Shea I won’t assume anything. Honestly it wouldn’t shock me if he rehabbed his hernia only to go “Felix Pie” on us and twist a testicle.

.Of course ‘old Moises just might get healthy at the right time to carry us thru October, right…? But that’s looking more like an El Duque kinda pipe dream isn’t it?

We’re in a real quandary here. We need a starting left fielder but one that’s willing to sit the moment Moises arrives. Even if the trade becomes real would CoCo Crisp tolerate that?? Or do we go with Pagan who would’t make a peep because he’s just happy to be in the bigs…?

Basically we can’t trade for a starter cuz of Moises and we can’t ignore the position cuz of Moises…So what’s a franchise to do?

The other wild card is that we’re not positive we’ve got a full time starter in right field either! Between Alou, Church and Beltran a Covelli Crisp type could net 55O AB’s but if Pagan can deliver similar numbers for a fraction of the cost why not allow our homegrown talent to blossom?

BMF is split in half on this one. Emotionally I want to roll the dice with Pagan but my brain sez the big league tested Crisp is the wiser choice (pending attitude). Personally I’m a CoCo fan. He won’t supply much power (or OBP) but I believe he can hit for average, he’s got great wheels and his defense is SICK!

But on the other hand - if Pagan matures into the player he looks like he’s capable of we’re sitting pretty for years to come.

I guess I’ll be happy either way.

The “Go Big Pelf” T-Shirt Story Part Deux

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better schmifty reports this little gem from Mets camp,

“BMF!!! You are gonna LOVE THIS!!! There is a Part 2 to the story!

.I hadn’t mentioned it to you yet because I didn’t know if it was going to work out, but it all started a few days ago and just finished up perfectly!

The day that I met Pelf, after the players were gone, the trainers (Rick Slate and Jeff Cavaliere) came over to me. Slate said “Can you do me a favor? Make 2 of those shirts, Men’s XL, and bring them to Wednesday’s practice by 9:30 AM”. Sweet!

So I made the shirts and handed them off to Slate early this morning while he was alone setting up the field. He said “I think we can use these during stretch.” I assumed he and Jeff would wear them. Then Slate went back to the clubhouse and the place was empty again. After a while all the players came out, and Maine came over to me and said “Can I get one of those shirts? I’ll wear it every day!” Then he gave Pelf a big hug. Haha! I take it he hadn’t heard about the trainers’ plan yet…

.Well eventually all the players got organized and Slate had them gather round. Then… I notice Billy Wagner and Joe Smith stepping into the center of the circle… They both ripped off their jerseys… they had the GO BIG PELF shirts on underneath!!!! Wags and Smith did the whole workout in the Pelf shirts!!! It was hysterical! Pelf was laughing and Maine started waving to me and clapping.

Slate helped me out afterwards by having Pelf come over to do another pic, this time with the whole shirt in view. Too cool!!!

Your nickname is famous now, I heard fans yelling GO BIG PELF as he ran off the field!”

BMF recommends you Click the pix for schmifty’s photostream - there are some hilarious shots of Wagner and Joe Smith working out in “Go Big Pelf” shirts and others with the Mets turning to camera and laughing at the gag. Fernando Martinez, David Wright, the BLBB, Ricardo Rincon…

Ya Gotta love the fan friendly, family like atmosphere at Met training camp. - Something tells me we’d never see a fan interaction stunt like this over in yankee part of Florida!

Go Big Pelf!!
Lets Go Mets!!!

    BMF–

There is lots of fan interaction in Yankee Tampa.
It is reserved for 60 year old comedians who lost their sense of humor 20 years ago and happen to be a minority owner of another major league team (D-Backs) that defeated the Yanks for the 2001 World Series.

  2. MezzSec22 Says:

Thanks again Schmifty for the updated pics to go along w/ your Amazin’ Spring Training Experience.

The Billy Crystal stunt takes the cake. So much for all that Yankee “Tradition” that has been spewed over & over for many years. The Yankee culture sure is changing this year. New Manager, New Owner face to the Franchise (Hankenstein), No Bob Sheppard, and next year a new stadium. These are certainly times that could try a Yankee fan’s soul. Lots of questions. We’ll see how many “phonies” jump ship and start declaring the Mets as their favorite team now.

  3. Matt the Met Fan Says:

Pray we trade Sosa and Blown-weis for Nady and PLEASE keep Rincon and Register ..

those two guys can throw the ball .. we gave up Taco Bell last spring - lets keep these guys

  4. the penis mightier Says:

You see, that’s the deal with Alou. Everyone knew he was going to go down at some point or points this year. I think Pagan/Chavez platoon will be fine in LF until Alou gets back. Then we can have Beltran in center and then a Pagan/Chavez/Alou/Church rotisserie in the corner spots.

Expect to see very little Alou and Church during Santana’s starts. With the way Santana can pitch, offense won’t be necessary and guys like Alou can get a rest.

I really have to make it to florida next season….

  5. The Lip Says:

Doesn’t Billy Crystal wear a Mets cap in City Slickers? I’m sure it’s not worth watching again; but I do seem to recollect that.

  6. Zoe Says:

Dude, that’s great about the t-shirts. Off to check out all the pics now!

  7. will Says:

i would so wear that shirt.

  8. jay Says:

produce the shirts! i’d buy one!

  9. JJ Says:

Lip - As usual you’re right, Chrystal does wear a Mets hat in City Slickers.

Mightier - I also agree with you but am I the only one here concerned that the team we hope will make the WS is counting on a four player platoon in the key spots of LF and RF?

  10. dykstraw Says:

alright, now it is officially the #1 pitcher stalking story of the spring. nice work schmifty!

  11. wynd Says:

I haven’t seen the highlights but I hear Pelfrey got a single today and scored a run … could it be t-shirt magic??
(also heard Reyes almost lapped him! hahaha)

  12. amazin08 Says:

i would SO wear that shirt

  13. GoBigPelf Says:

    Sell GO BIG PELF tees!

  14. SuperNick Says:

That is the best fan friendly story I have ever heard! I would so buy one of those shirts. Maybe we can all buy one, get a big group together and wear them to a Big Pelf outing during the season.

  15. schmifty Says:

Thanks so much for running the story, BMF! That’s hysterical that people like the shirt, I love it! We’ll have to see what to do about that… BMF, with your blessing, maybe I could make some more for people? They don’t cost me much to make.

  16. BlondiesJake Says:

As I said yesterday, make them with GO BIG PELF on the front and BMF on the back, with www.brooklynmetfan.com in smaller lettering. Also, hurry up and COPYRIGHT THE NAME because they will catch on, especially if he wins the 5th spot and pitches well!!!

    GO BIG PELF!
I’LL BUY A GO BIG PELF SHIRT!
THE ROTATION WILL CURE THE ILLS!

  18. Nick G Says:

I added Big Pelf’s nickname to WIkipedia, citing this article. Hopefully there’ll be more promotion for it.

  19. cowcrusher Says:

Is Gary Marshall’s real name Lowell Ganz?? Yes possibly, the same Gary M. who brought us “Happy Days”, the tv version of “Odd Couple” (remember Oscar Madison always wore a Mets cap) The movies “Splash”, “gung ho” and host of others like “City Slickers” Even though Gary is from the Brons.. He is a die-hard Mets fan.
It’s just too much of a coincidence…discuss amongst yourselves.. :)

  20. cowcrusher Says:

Ok… they are not the same person..however, there are a large number of projects that Gary and Lowell worked on together….Must be a Mets thing!! :)
