The Big Pelf T-Shirt & Pagan Should Start!
Granted there are still almost 3 weeks left in Spring Training but for anyone paying attention the writing is clearly on the wall — Angel Pagan is the man for left. As far as BMF is concerned barring a Chernobyl-esque collapse Pagan has more than earned the right to keep LF warm while Alou heals.
Tuesday saw Pagan rope a 2 run triple and make a diving catch to save multiple runs vs Boston. While there is something to be said for waiting until late in camp to hand a youngster a starting job Met brass must have Pagan’s name unofficially penciled in by now.
BMF cannot endorse trading more young talent to solve the Alou situation and quite frankly I have no interest in Xavier Nady or Marcus Thames at Shea. We’ve depleted enough stock in our farm this winter so we need to stay inside the organization on this one.
Of course there is a long list of guys who ripped it up in the spring only to shrink once the spotlight of the regular season arrived but I’ve gotta believe Angel Pagan has a good chance to avoid such a fate.
At 26 years old and with 318 big league AB’s under his belt he’s not exactly a wide-eyed rookie. Nor are we asking the kid to lead us to a World Series. All he’s got to do is contribute modestly until Alou resurfaces. Then again we all expect Alou to spend a significant amount of time on the DL so a pair of strong young legs is exactly what the Mets need. Sorry Sammy and Barry but Angel Pagan is the way to go.

Big Ups to schmifty who took “The Big Pelf” (BMF’s nickname for Mike Pelfrey) and ran with it all the way to spring training! In case you missed her post in yesterday’s thread she made a shirt that said “Go Big Pelf” and was a huge hit with the boys during open practice. Sez Schmifty,
“BMF!!!! I met the PELF!!!!
I made the “GO BIG PELF” shirt and wore it to open workouts this morning. Schoeneweis and Wags spotted me right away and started pointing at me. I was like, uh oh… Then they called Pelf over to take a look and he was smiling away (and really surprised!). Then Scho came over and started asking me all about it! Wags came over too, and then they dragged Pelf up to meet me!
It was hysterical! Pelf was really shy and I don’t think he said a word, just smiled and laughed when I kept saying “He’s my favorite player! Go Pelf!”. Scho made me hold up my hand to check if I had a wedding ring, haha! Then Scho was like “You should make another shirt every day… like tomorrow you should have one that says “GO LIL WAGS”, and Wags was pissed!! I got to get my pic taken with Pelf, sweet. For some reason I did the whole thing in a Southern accent - due to being nervous, haha!
Afterwards I heard Maine telling Pelf “You’re big time now!”
Then as the players all gathered around to listen to the trainer, Wags pointed me out to the whole group - I have a pic of the whole team turned around, staring! It was too cool.
GO BIG PELF!!!”

I agree - Schmifty does certainly rock! That pic where the team is turning around is f’ing priceless!! I LMAO when I see it.

Schmifty - that’s super cool. The team photo is quite awesome, too. That’s a really neat moment to have captured.
I can get onboard for Pagan in left - why not? He have a need and he seems capable of filling it. I see no harm. To be honest, there is a potentially huge upside. If the guy works out, we’ve got ourselves a player. I can’t watch ST action; but I hear drips and draps of Pagan’s heroics and I like it.

schmifty wins! awesome pics…
I’m with ya on Pagan, the kid has shown talent, poise, and heart in equal measure. gotta respect his performance thus far. I wonder though, about where to play him. isn’t Church a ‘natural’ LF? maybe drop Pagan in RF instead… just a thought.

BMF!!! You are gonna LOVE THIS!!! There is a Part 2 to the story!
I hadn’t mentioned it to you yet because I didn’t know if it was going to work out, but it all started a few days ago and just finished up perfectly!
The day that I met Pelf, after the players were gone, the trainers (Rick Slate and Jeff Cavaliere) came over to me. Slate said “Can you do me a favor? Make 2 of those shirts, Men’s XL, and bring them to Wednesday’s practice by 9:30 AM”. Sweet!
So I made the shirts and handed them off to Slate early this morning while he was alone setting up the field. He said “I think we can use these during stretch.” I assumed he and Jeff would wear them. Then Slate went back to the clubhouse and the place was empty again. After a while all the players came out, and Maine came over to me and said “Can I get one of those shirts? I’ll wear it every day!” Then he gave Pelf a big hug. Haha! I take it he hadn’t heard about the trainers’ plan yet…
Well eventually all the players got organized and Slate had them gather round. Then… I notice Billy Wagner and Joe Smith stepping into the center of the circle… They both ripped off their jerseys… they had the GO BIG PELF shirts on underneath!!!! Wags and Smith did the whole workout in the Pelf shirts!!! It was hysterical! Pelf was laughing and Maine started waving to me and clapping.
Slate helped me out afterwards by having Pelf come over to do another pic, this time with the whole shirt in view. Too cool!!!
All the pics will be up shortly, I’ll post the link!
Your nickname is famous now, I heard fans yelling GO BIG PELF as he ran off the field!

That is awesome….to cool…I love it when players on a team dont act to big for fan friendly fun…GO BIG PELF…..GO ANGEL PAGAN

schmifty, stories like yours remind me why I love baseball so much, and why an organization and a team like the Mets can be so much fun, because they didn’t act all corporate and ignore you, but enjoyed the moment with the fan. Props to you, can’t wait to see the next round of pics.
BMF, you are, as always, THE MAN. Agree with your take on Pagan, let’s see what he’s got. I still endorse signing BB (I know, groan away), but I’m willing to wait and see on that for a chance to let Pagan shine in meaningful games. He’s now approaching 27, which is when many players hit their prime and really take off, so perhaps he’s just a late bloomer who will go straight to his prime!
And props to you for the nickname that looks like it’s going to stick. Perhaps schmifty can make up tees that say GO BIG PELF on the front and BMF on the back, and we can all wear them at games and around town (yes, I’ll wear it in LA) and when people ask, we can spread the love. WE WILL BE DISCUSSING THIS TOMORROW ON THE SHOW!!!
LET’S GO METS!
GO BIG PELF!
THE ROTATION WILL CURE THE ILLS!

This is the kind of looseness we need in spring training. GO BIG PELF!
March 12th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Not for nothing, I’ve really got to get my ass down to spring training one year. Reading all these stories about how personal and fun it is, really makes me want to go. While I love going to Shea, you never get to meet any of the players.
Angel Pagan in left? Why not? Then again, as long as Sosa keeps his mouth shut, I’m not totally opposed to signing him either. Bonds? Not so much. Don’t like him and he’s the typical 24 and 1 kind of guy.
March 12th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
Schmifty…. Thanks for sharing your experience with the rest of us. Your pics are PRICELESS, especially the one where the entire team turns around & looks at you. Looking forward to Part 2.
BMF - put together a trip for us next year!

Totally agree that we should go with Pagan until Alou returns. What makes Nady worth strong consideration is how many depth problems he addresses in one player. He’d be a perfect guy to platoon with Church if Church continues to tank against LHP, and he has real experience at 1b if Delgado continues to evaporate. Even if Delgado and Alou remain healthy and have good years, they’ll still need to be rested a lot, and Nady can do that for both. Worth seeing what Pittsburgh wants, but it will almost definitely be too much.

Fresh off the Hot Stove: Pagan to Sox for Coco Crisp

It goes to figure, right after The Lip gets on board with the Pagan move word starts up about dealing him away. I swear Omar reads BMF everday and makes moves to purposely piss off The Lip…
