Playoff Bound NY Mets?

Despite yesterday’s loss in the series finale, after watching this team all season I’m finally allowing myself dreams of the postseason.

As we enter the 4th of July “week” (Wednesday 4ths suck) the Mets are 1 game behind LA for the WildCard.

We’re absolutely within striking distance of the Nats for the division but we can taste the Wild Card right now at just 1 game back.

Don’t get me wrong, the WC is no gimmie considering the Dodgers are getting Kemp back and there are 7 teams within 5 games of each other for the final playoff spot.

The Pirates have to prove they can win before they get my respect.

The Braves of course are scary… except Bobby Cox isn’t there anymore and neither is Chipper really.

St Loo is the most dangerous team in the race IMO. Larussa’s gone too, so is Pujols, but they still scare me.

Arizona and Miami, i respect them but I think we can outplay them.

No reason in the world we can’t compete for this Wild Card until the final week of the season.

… now watch the bottom fall out.

I think the Dodgers are totally a product of their schedule. I know they are missung Kemp and Ethier right now but they are really not the team everyone thought they were in the beginning of the year.

I think that TC has to start taking a long hard look at replacing all of our lefty hitters with righties, most who hardly ever play. The defense gets killed by this complete lineup overhaul as per last night.

I am curious, if we make the playoffs and are in the wild card elimination game, and the opposing team pitches a lefty, is TC going to have Ike, Murphy, and Thole all on the bench?

I understand the lefty-righty thing but it has gotten to the point that TC is probably trying to only pitch a guy who bats righty when the opposing team has a lefty on the mound.

You have to have Ike in the lineup, and Murphy has to be in there too, given how hot they have been.

Sunday night’s game was winnable and the defense killed the game.

On one other note, please stop pitching Bautista in any game that we still have a shot at. The guy is completely overthrowing, and cannot get big outs.

Howard, I’m with you on this one. I’ve always disliked taking the quality lefties out of the lineup vs a lefty pitcher. While that pitcher may be tough to hit (and Kershaw is as good a lefty as there is), putting in inferior hitters makes it that much easier for the pitcher to mow down your lousy lineup.

Having said that, when the righties coming in are all very good hitters, it’s different. But Cedeno and Turner are nice bench players, not guys you expect will be able to handle Kershaw any better than Ike or Murphy.

I feel like that scene in Shawshank should be playing where we are told that hope is a dangerous thing.

“Let me tell you something my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.”

They should change the team name to the NY Hopes, since they drive us fans insane!
