Hefner Studs Out!
I don’t think “stud out” is a legit term for use in the english language but it’s befitting of Jeremy Hefner’s outing last nite.
The kid not only pitched well enough to beat the Phils but he also notched his first Big League win AND clubbed a HR for good measure.
It was a big game from our emergency pitcher. Who all told has done his part to keep things moving for the Mets. Chris Young is getting closer to returning so Hefner’s fate is far from certain but if he keeps posting W’s he just might stick around.
Scott Hairston hit a HR of his own and now LEADS THE METS IN HR’s!?!? Wha-?
If Scott Hairston is the leading slugger on this team something ain’t right.
It’s unfair to get on Wright since he’s been above .400 most of the season but hello Lucas Duda - where’s that prodigious power???
Ike has been a catastrophe but jeez Scott Hairston leads the team with 6 HR? Thats pathetic and proves once and for all that the fences weren’t the problem — it’s the Mets.
But the good news is somehow, someway we’re just a game and a half out of first place.

Yes Hairston a surprise ..mostly a pinch hitter leads team .. but how about Hefner having more HR’s than Murphy ???
Schwinden again? its time for us to bring up Harvey .. who knew replacing Pelfrey would be so hard?

What is the key to Lee vs. Gee? You see, to me, it has to be, Mur-Phee! Sor-ree. Real-lee.

I noticed this the other day…I checked several of the other national sports sites and looked at their MLB Power Rankings and I’m shocked at how low most of them have the Mets ranked. Many have them down around #17 overall? plus ranked behind everyone in the NL east even though they are in 2nd place and have dominated the division and have played a very difficult schedule so far.
Why no love for our Meties?

USMF - for the simple reason that the Mets are getting away with murder. Their run differential is -20. The other team with a -20 run differential in the NL is Arizona and their record is the exact opposite of the Mets - 22-28. This “win close, lose big” style won’t last. Baseball-Reference.com has a stat in their expanded standings called “Luck” - the difference betwwen what a team’s W-L record “should” be and what it is. The Mets are tops in the NL in “Luck” by a mile.
The beauty is that having gotten away with murder to date they could in theory be sending out a better team in a few weeks with the returns of Thole (OPS+ of 104 vs. Nickeas 31!), Tejada (OPS+ of 114 vs. Cedeno 87 btw wtf is taking Tejada so long is he the Ike of 2012?), Bay (sorry boys but he’s definitely better than Torres and probably better than Duda - yes I went there), and some pitching help (Young, Mejia, Famila (sp?)). As fun as it is to watch this scrappy bunch of no names there is no way they are going to keep this up.

I just can’t believe that this team is only 1.5 games out. They are amazing so far!
There is still a long haul, but this team had totally exceeded anybody’s expectations so far.
LET’S GO METS!
