When Can We Talk .400 and Wright?

It’s May 25th and David Wright is hitting .405. At first it’s a good start, then it’s a hot April but now that we’re approaching June and the guy is still slaughtering pitching it may be time to start speculating for real about his shot at .400.

When he dipped to .399 after Wednesday’s 0-fer I figured the ride was over. Until he went 3-5 last nite to push back to .405 — wow

Jeremy Hefner got a raw deal with the rain. He was cruising for 2 frames until the rains stopped the game for over an hour. When he came back he’d lost the edge.

The biggest clue that his stuff was gone was when the Padres started  hitting and scoring runs. Their offense is so pathetic that if they score 11 runs off of you something’s wrong.

You gotta give Hefner another start.

As impressive as Wright’s average is, .405 is way too low to think about a legit shot at .400. Ted Williams was hit .431 on June 1st when he hit .406 71 years ago. And even thee, in an era when it was much easier to hit, he still saw his average drop to as low as .393 in mid-July. For a player to legitimately have a shot nowadays, I would think that they would need to be around .450-.460 at Memorial Day.

What is much more impressive than Wright’s BA is his OPS (1.128). The Met record (Pizza) is only 1.012, so Wright has a good chance to shatter that, and there have only been a handful of 3B in MLB history who have had an OPS over 1.000. Wright is also on pace for 58 doubles, which would obliterate the Mets’ record (44), and he has an outside shot to match Beltran’s team record for XBH (80). Oh, and he’s on pace to strikeout less than 100 times…

And this was written before last night’s game:

The Braves and Phil’s could use a third baseman. Praying this doesn’t happen.

^Zero chance. The Mets will have an extension with Wright in place before the All-Star break.

LC- Philly Phan has already been penciling David in at third…Philly is getting pretty close to the Spanks as far as spending money and expecting all the best FA’s to automatically sign there.

Anyone else notice what a monster season Beltran is having?
