A New York Mets Blog for all fans of the New York Mets, especially former fans of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and residents of Brooklyn, written by Adam Salazar.

Miserable Mets

Despite mentioning on Monday how I’d be shocked if we won 2 of 3 in LA, BMF was still left shaking my head as the Dodgers blew past us in the bottom of the second.

.You had to know as soon as Johnny USS Maine served up back-to-back-to-back HR’s on 3 consecutive pitches (!) that you could chalk up another one in the loss column for the plummeting Mets.

Gone are the days this team was dangerous.

Gone are the days the Mets would come back on you.

Gone are the days I expect to win games - let alone series - let alone a division!

Don’t even talk to me about the World Series – I think a handful of women’s NCAA softball teams could beat the Mets these days.

All you need is a lead and you can coast to victory over the feeble Mets.

I can’t even remember what it feels like to win regularly.

All this and we’ve got the friggin’ yankees looming on the horizon!?!!

I swear to God I’m not gonna be able to take it if the grotesque, yet white hot yanks sweep us this weekend. The last thing I need is to watch George’s minions hand us our 6th, 7th, and 8th consecutive losses.

I’m so disgusted with the state of affairs right now I don’t even know what to say.

.Am I supposed to take some comfort in the Braves losing too? Too bad the Phils won so now they’re only 3 back – GREAT!

Guess what boys and girls we may very well be looking at 3rd place come Monday morning. Could you imagine tumbling into 3rd place with the Fish breathing down our necks from 4th???

If Willie Randolph doesn’t go Lou Pinella somewhere, somehow, some way, BMF is GONNA!!!

I have nothing more to say today.

(except for) Quick Hits:

• Omar Minaya and a select few of his boys are on the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated. Despite the fact that BMF is still harboring a major grudge against the once great magazine, for the snub of not being included in the Best Met Blogs, I’ll still provide a link to the cover .

Is El Duque serious with that smile??? I love how the BLBB is front and center.

• Amby Burgos has been shut down at AAA with a sore right elbow.

• Pedro threw 50 pitches Tuesday in Port St. Lucie.

• D-Wright’s second-inning single was his 500th career hit. It also extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

• Is anyone going to Friday night’s Subway Series game? A reporter from one of the big 4 papers here in NY contacted BMF looking for a Met fan headed into enemy territory who she could meet up with and interview – possibly with a photographer for pictures too.

I‘m not going but if one of you is please e-mail me and I’ll put you in touch.

    And the beat goes on
    Which way ya goin’ Willie?
Take another little piece of my heart
    Hurts so bad
    I’m a loser
    Lay down
    19th nervous breakdown
Ain’t that a kick in the head

…sometimes reminiscing of old songs is ironic and sucks at the same time.

  2. The Lip Says:

All I can wonder is who Larry King was rooting for.

Maybe Keith Hernandez can give a pep talk.

I feel like we really need Pedro to come back and take charge of the team.

I’ve said it all along - we’ve got a bunch of nice guys.

This sucks. I knew it would happen; but it still hurts.

Honestly - we need to do something. Maybe all the BMFers should get together for a trip to Shea and really make some noise. We’re not just fans - we CAN have an impact on our team.

Seriously - let’s get to a game and get loud.

  3. grenzo Says:

hey usmf your boy beltran had another sick game.. sick game..maybe you should map your entries like beltran’s at bats.. short and sweet

  4. GDubb Says:

    “And I’m free…
    free fallin’….”

  5. The Lip Says:

    Nice, Grenzo!!!

That’s funny as Hell - sorry USMF; but that is FUNNY!

  6. USMF Says:

this sucks…turned the game on, the score was 3-1 and I knew it was over…click.

Saw some post game interviews, the mood is suddenly started to go way down. Big Willie looks like he’s almost ready to show an emotion. I’m getting the feeling that this team is ready to either implode or explode. Something Volatile is about to happen, I don’t know what but s**ts about to break.

Once again the whole team sucks out, 5 hits and 2 errors, but throw it all on your scape goat…

does anyone else feel like it’s 2001-2004 again?

  7. USMF Says:

Your right, but it’s more of a bitter sour taste…

  8. grenzo Says:

just bustin balls usmf.. penny is ours tonight

  9. JJ Says:

No emotion, no fire, has Art Howe taken over the team? Or is Willie proving that in addition to questionable game skills he’s incapable of managing a team with expectations that hits a tough spot?

  10. grenzo Says:

we need the rihanna song back..

If it’s loving that you want
Then you should make me your girl, your girl
If it’s loving that you need
Baby come and share my world, share my world
If it’s loving that you want
Then come and take a walk with me, walk with me
Cause, everything that you need, I got it right here baby, baby

  11. The Lip Says:

Maybe we should install a trap door under the batter’s box. You enter with an 0-2 count and you have to stay alive.

WHAT the F__K is Downs doing - huh? Huh? what the f–k is Downs DOING?

OMAR: Do something here. Please. Make a move. By trading Beltran it will send a wakup call to therest of the team. Produce, or get the
    f–k out.

Willie AND Omar: you too - produce or get the
f–k out. Win the 2007 WS. Your insolence will not be tolerated.

  12. Coop Says:

You know what’s funny, is that PLD went on the FAN and said something to the effect that - yeah, we need to win at least one of these next two games. Um…ya think??? Where’s the spirit from last year?? Where’s the guts? Last year, they would have gone into town and steamrolled those Chavez Latriners. This year? We lay down like sheep.

Visit My Summer Family for some award nominations. Later.

  13. coreynyc Says:

We have to start blaming Omar for this mess. Despite still being in first, the Mets have beaten up on crappy teams. They are .500 against the division and getting embarrassed during a period of time we all targeted as a crucial stretch.

He is the one who hired Willie and re-upped his contract before this season. Anyone shocked by or pissed at Willie sitting back and doing nothing during this period probably wasn’t paying attention in 2005. Mid-late Aug 2005, the Mets were in the thick of the Wild Card race until they went thru a period on inept, listless play (just like now). Willie didn’t do a damn thing but throw out the lame clichéd quotes (“I trust my guys”) and the team collapsed. Once they were out of the race, the team finally started playing better and salvaged the season.

Willie doesn’t need to rip the players in the media but he does need to show that he is disgusted with the way the team is playing. Seeing Willie spout the same crap day after day is like hearing Bush continue to claim that Iraq has been a success.

Willie (still) also needs to learn how to manage. His in game decision making is ridiculous at times and he has show no ability to adjust his lineup. Last season I didn’t like LoDuca batting second but there is no disputing that it seemed to work. Why not shake things up and put LoDuca second? Why not move Delgado down in the lineup?

Bobby Valentine would have this team playing with life right now.

That said, Omar has gotten a huge free pass from everyone. He had a TERRIBLE offseason.

The Alou signing was horrible! When you have 38 y.o. Green as your other corner OF, you cannot take the risk on Alou who has a proven history of missing significant chunks of the season in recent years. Soriano, despite his large contract and shortcomings in the field would have been a much better option.

Omar is someone who values a strong bullpen. So why did he let two cornerstones of last year, Bradford and Oliver, go??? Why did he trade Health Bell?

Why did he show such a huge commitment to Mota when his post-roids performance was completely unpredictable? I think Mota will pitch better, his speed is there but placement is suffering. He had a disjointed preparation for this season and in many ways he is really in Spring Training right now. But the fact remains that Omar was willing to throw 2 years at an unknown quantity.

Omar completely misread the relief pitcher market and brought in DAMAGED GOODS Shoenweis. How did this guy pass a physical? This signing reeks of the prior Mets front office. Zambrano-esque, to say the least.

Then there’s Aaron Heilman, who didn’t want to be in the bullpen last season and gave up the game 7 HR. Why not deal him during the off season? Despite the HR, he likely had high trade value thanks to his strong 2nd half of the season. Should have sold high (same goes for Lastings Milledge)!! Now Heilman is not to be trusted and lost his trade luster.

Omar pinned a lot of hopes on Joe Smith, who had a good beginning of the season but seems to have hit the “wall” right now in his rookie season followed by a highly accelerated minor league experience. I think he’ll find himself sooner or later but unfortunately, the Mets have put him in a crucial position in the bullpen and cannot wait for him to pick it up again.

Jose Valentin had a completely unexpected season last year by everyone’s standards. The market for 38 year old 2B’s couldn’t have been that intense, so why was he Omar first move of the off season. Now the Mets have a 2B problem for the rest of the season, as I fully expect him to be off-and-on with his injury.

David Newhan is a bust, Easley has been decent, and Gotay has been decent. But the bench lacks pop.
Ben Johnson for Heath Bell is a real head scratcher.

Now lets go back 2 seasons ago, when the Mets had a reliable PH and fill in utility player. I still don’t understand why Omar let Marlon Anderson walk over a 2 year contract. The Mets could really use him right now in the OF and as a PH. I would have liked to see him instead of Uncle Cliffy at bat in game 7.

Julio Franco is a joke and a waste of a roster spot. Why not just make him a coach already?

This team is somewhat ill conceived and last season was a bit of a fluke as little to nothing went wrong. This year, almost everything has gone wrong thus far. Thank g-d that Sosa, Maine and Perez have performed above all expectations; otherwise the Mets would be dead in the water.

Even though I think the Mets will turn things around a little bit, the team as currently constructed and with Willie as the manager is not championship caliber. No matter how much people say “well look at the Cardinals last season”, you cannot pin your hopes on another fluke.

There are those of you who will say:
“what about signing Beltran” (you mean the guy who had the Mets as a third choice?)
“what about Oliie Perez & John Maine?” (thank you Rick Peterson)
“Endy Chavez? Billy Wagner?” (OK, I will give Omar credit for those)

Omar needs to fix this ship, it ain’t sunk but it is sinking (isn’t nearly as great as we all expected). There’s a lot of season left and with some good moves, Omar can improve this team.

  14. Helix Says:

What would it be like if we dropped to 3rd or 4th place for the balance of the season, and then came on strong in September? Let Philly or Atlanta set the pace for awhile while we gather our s**t together. I mean, who cares who held the lead in the NL East? There’s the playoffs & (dare I say it), the Wild Card.

The downside to all that of course is getting embarrassed by our Bronx adversaries this weekend. That I cannot abide! Our standings in the division mean less to me than our record against the Wanks.

Not ready to don the life jacket quite yet. Trite as it sounds, there’s still plenty of baseball to be played, and just like the punks in the Bronx, we have too much talent on this team to go quietly into that good night.

  15. Matt the Met Fan Says:

agree w/Helix … this is a bad slump - thats all - lots of baseball to go here guys … and who knows? maybe the only one we have all year ..

and I think it’s a positive that we had a great start and are not only still in the race but still in 1st place …

I, for one, look foward to stopping the yankee menace .. we need a wake up and you don’t want to embarrass yourself against those jerks ..

  16. Coop Says:

Coreynyc, you are right on many fronts regarding Omar. But I have to disagree with your assessment that the FA market was a failure for him. I was actually for the Moises Alou signing for one reason — knowing full well he was cheap, can still be a warrior and…he would not make a full season. I was under the impression that when/if Moises went down for a long stretch, Stings would be there to replace him, who by all stretches of the word is way more ML ready than say Carlos Gomez or any of the other scrubs we’re throwing out there.

How could Omar know Stings would go down too? That was just a bad bluff I guess.

As for the other FAs, who would you rather have? Barry Zito for a gazillion dollars and as many years? Dice-K? Can you honestly say they would be helping us more than what we have? John Maine is just being unlucky…Oh Pea has had decent outings but no run support. Glavine I heard is p’d at the lack of motivation around…We need Pedro but Jorge Sosa is keeping his spot nice and warm (Jorge Sosa? Wasn’t he an Omar coup?)…Duque is Warrior.

And the only other “name” on the market was Sori and I’m sorry, I don’t offer him a better contract than Beltran. He is not worth 8 years OR over $100 mm. Let the Cubs and the Giants and everyone else deal with their bad contracts…trust me, Omar played it smart.

As for Heath Bell for Ben Johnson (and Royce Ring and some other scrub who was sent to us)…Heath Bell is dominating in SD. Why? He’s close to home. I think Taco Bell is a perfect example of someone who just needed a change of scenery. Its sad, it would have been great if he worked out for the Mets, alas it was not meant to be.

The thing I will agree on is…Julio Franco. Dude just needs to be a coach. he is wasting valuable roster space…for what? So he can say - I played when I was 50? He hurts the team and he has to see that. Of course, he is one of Omar’s boys, and we just see his blind devotion towards a friend rather than player who can do some good.

  17. The Lip Says:

CoreyNYC: I tip my cap to you. You’ve spoken the truth and spoken it with eloquence.

  18. A Phanatic Says:

That’s the attitude! This team really couldn’t be that bad…, it’s got to be a slump!

This site is funny. I need another cocktail.

  19. SDMetFan Says:

It’s been a rough stretch for sure, but it certainly doesn’t feel like 01, 02, or 03. This is a team that hasn’t been completely healthy, and they did pretty well even though they didn’t have the full starting 8 for most of the season. Yeah, they’re in a rough stretch, but since there’s more than half of a season left, and we’re still in first place, it’s easy to have a sense that things will get better.

As close as the Phils and Marlins are, I don’t think they’ll be there in September. Our pitching carried our hitters, our hitters will start carrying the pitching eventually, and Pedro’s return should get some life into everyone.

I’m not ready to step onto the ledge yet.

    -Anthony

  20. USMF Says:

grenzo, no worries, if I can’t have fun and bust some balls and get my busted back, then that would make me no better than a Phillie fan.

I didn’t mind the Alou deal, Knew has gonna get hurt sometime during the season, but he’s still a nasty hitter vs LH hitters and with Stings and Big BJ (who was the Padres ML player of the year in 2005?) we had some good guys to hold the spot.

Sori is overrated in my eyes, big numbers but he doesn’t do the little things to help the team, all the complaints about Beltran, but even more so…Not to mention, with 3 young OF studs on the way, why waste money on a big long term contract.

Everyone was dreading seeing Bell and Ring pitch last year, so how can you say we miss them.

Smith is young, hitters have started to adjust to him, but he’ll learn to over come, his stuff is too good. I do worry about him getting over used.

Stash was been just as good as any other other FA infielders from last year. Great in the field and solid bat. With A-Hern and Gotay, there was some good young talent to back him up. One of Jose’s biggest assets is one you’ll never see in a box score. He’s been a great mentor for Reyes, the defense up the middle is great when there both there.

Old man Franco is wearing thin. Great leader, but he’s just isn’t hitting any more, dudes got to try to pull the ball, this trying to slap the ball to right isn’t working.

Lets not give up and start bashing our boys as soon as things start going bad. We got a good team with good players how are good guys. Lets not boo them, but get behind them and cheer them on.

I say screw the Wild Card, fight too the end, but we should be in first. This team needs to find there Balls, bean one of the Jones boys, get in a fight and find that chip on their shoulder.

  21. Coop Says:

USMF - i believe that when Stings is good and ready, he’ll be that “chip” you speaketh.

  22. USMF Says:

Coop-hopefully Pete will supply the Balls…

  23. A Phanatic Says:

USMF is right. It is important not to overreact when someone misplaces their balls.

  24. USMF Says:

Good advice coming from a Phillie fan, we all know that Phillie hasn’t had a team, football, hockey or baseball with any balls in over 50 years…

  25. A Phanatic Says:

Hey you can always count on a philly fan’s good advice… A championship, well that’s another thing entirely.

  26. USMF Says:

You can count on Phillie fan for many things, some of them good…but today, Phanatic as usual, you’ve supplied me with a smile on a otherwise miserable day.

  27. USMF Says:

now…if only the C-Loses and crew can supply us with a few 2 out RBIs I’d pull this knife away from my wrist.

  28. Sanchez Says:

funny i have the same expression on my face as Larry King when I watch the Mets .. oh wait he ALWAYS has that face

btw USMF i’d swich to plastic b/c these clowns may not start getting 2 out RBI hits until July

  29. USMF Says:

Sanchez, when you say Plastic, do you mean for the Knife at my Wrist or the Bag over my head?

If were picking songs for the day I got a good one…It’s called Binge and Purge by Clutch…I linked the Lyrics because of the repeated use to the work M’Effer

    http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Binge-And-Purge-lyrics-Clutch/7A2A8FC7A691527148256C2B002D8166

Willie should play this song all day in the club house before each game…

  30. LoveEmHateEm Says:

…and did Kuo think that he hit a grand mother f**king slam in the bottom of the ninth with his team down 5-2 in the 7th game of the world f**kin series? You’d never know the way he tossed his bat.

Things I’d like to see happen real soon. Beltran diving for more balls. Green diving for more balls. Beltran and Green not diving into each other. Hitting Kuo the next time we see him right in his fat ass. Have no less than 4 bench clearing brawls in the next couple of weeks for the slightest of provocation, and act like Spartans or William Wallace when chaging opposing players all the while screaming, “YOU DIE TODAY MOTHERf**kERS AND I DON’T GIVE A f**k…AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!”

Anybody got a problem with that? Because that is how the motherrf**k I feel right now. We need to shake this sweet nice imagery right the f**k out the window and usher a new “don’t f**k with us” attitude. NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME. Do it Willie…issue the “Balls Edict of 2007″. Give them SOME pride, will ya? This would to me be far better than the ‘haircut’ togetherness thing.

  31. LoveEmHateEm Says:

Holy s**t USMF, I went to the link and read the lyrics by Clutch and I couldn’t f**kIN AGREE more. Good find, and I hope you don’t mind but I printed the lyrics below because I feel all Mets and Mets fans should commit them to memory (or at least have a good idea of how the team should be thikking…LET’S GO WILLIE, NO MORE MR. NICE GUY):

Perhaps it’s just the way the light falls
But everything looks like a target to me
And I don’t know where the gun is
But I’m certain that it’s pointed at me
And in the jungle, retched jungle

  32. The Lip Says:

The nice guy sh-t goes right to the top. The Wilpons are trying to create and foster it. They OWN these guys on the field and off of it.

Can you imagine anyone other than LoDuca, Pedro, maybe Wagner in a fight? They would get their asses kicked. I think they’d probably run away and cry and the loudest cry baby would be Beltran. Someone would tear his shirt and we’d all see the pink tutu he wears underneath.

I’d love to see some fights. I’d LOVE to see some knockdown pitches; but these guys all personify the new breed of player - superior athletic ability; but wet end, p***y in everything else.

Can you imagine David Wright’s face if someone came into the clubhouse with a pile of Greenies or something? I bet these guys don’t even drink. 9:00am massage, 11:00 haircut, 12:00 yoga, 3-4 workout, 5-6 swimming.

It’s sad. I WISH I could see the game the wya it was played between 1900-1957. There were some deplorable things ie. segragation in MLB; but the GAME was different. The guys in the Negro leagues were really where it must have been at. The BRAND of baseball that was played in ALL leagues during those times was so amazing.

The Mets are great and they’re all we’ve got and I’m behind them and love them; but MLB is just another corporate machine at this point. I don’t kid myself - we’re seeing the readers digest G rated stuff. It’s not even confined to baseball - it’s the times we live in. It’s too bad.

  33. Bill L. Says:

Everyone wants some emotion, some sign of upset from Willie and the Poor Boys over the beating they have been taking lately. Here is a famous link of an upset manager, not taking a loss in stride. It’s even more relevant to our situation in that the manager is pissed over losing a game on three home runs. Sound familiar?
    Check it out: http://www.dodgerblues.com/images/tommy.rm
Perhaps Willie is getting close to that state himself–I know I am.

  34. Coop Says:

The Lip - visit my blog for more old fashioned goodness - i think you’ll enjoy :)

  35. KMac Says:

Wow, we’ve turned a losing streak into a commentary on the social mores of the day. If BMF’ers ran the world we wouldn’t have any problems! Of course, we’d have to take time out to watch the Met games and drink beer!

I agree with the general sentiment the team lacks the killer instinct that makes great ballplayers into WINNERS. It is only June but you have to have that “eye of the tiger” (sorry for the lame Rocky reference, but it fits) all the time. It’s a long season and it is tough to maintain, but that’s what the great players and teams do. It doesn’t mean you can’t be a good person at the same time.

    Great song.

  36. LoveEmHateEm Says:

    Coop.

    Wow.

Great writeup on your blog. You and BMF — my heroes.

  37. LoveEmHateEm Says:

    Bill L.

Tommy La Sorda wasn’t too pleased with Kingman’s 3 dingers, I gather (heh heh heh). Agree, Willie needs to (at the very least) make some shocking commentaries like this, peppered with a ‘f**k this’ and a ‘f**k that’. It might open his teams collective heart just enough.
