Coaching Shake-up

In what is hopefully the first of many announced moves a number of Big League coaches will not return next year.

Chip Hale left to be a bench coach with the A’s - good luck Chip.

Additionally Oberkfell, Mookie Wilson and Bullpen Coach Jon Debus will not return to the major league club for the 2012 season.

Tim Teufel will takes over 3rd Base and Ricky Bones is new Bullpen Coach.

Hudgens and Dan Warthen are both back.

Mookie will be offered another position in organization… Again. Gotta imagine Mookie is closing in on all time record for “Most Positions Held” “MPH” in franchise history.

There’s some buzz that Larry Bowa may be in line for a bench coach gig with the Mets. I’d give him the job w/o hesitation.

Bowa’s fire, passion and will to win is exactly what the Mets need right now. Bowa has the balls the Mets are lacking.

Bowa may be the only bench coach in baseball who would actually sell some tickets / generate interest.

The Mets had lots of “grititude” this season and look where it got them.

What they need is talent, pitching and health.

Agree with LC…we need to field a team within the lines.

I think making a former big league manager a bench coach is just inviting media speculation, esp in NY…first 3 game losing streak and people will be running with stories about Bowa assuming the helm. We don’t need all that drama, what we need is pitching so we don’t finish behind the pesky Nats again.

I am glad to see Hudgens is returning though.

Bowa has too much Phillie stink on him. Please: no Phillies in the Mets dugout.

  4. BrooklynBill Says:

Phillie stink + Skankee stink = super funk

  5. Common Sense Says:

Phillie stink + Skankee stink = WINNING

“Bowa has too much Phillie stink on him. Please: no Phillies in the Mets dugout.”

Translation: I don’t want any winners in the Mets’ dugout. I want that dog Jose Reyes back so I can watch him untuck his jersey and look like a slob after one of the 74 victories next year.

Anyone here want a winning franchise or do you want one owned by the Wilpons?

    They’re mutually exclusive.

Something doesn’t smell right with Mookie getting canned, yet being offered another job in the organization. Did we not steal enough bases?

I want to apply for the “Bullpen Coach Job” What the heck does a bullpen coach do?

    Any insight?

    Will take Riggleman over Bowa!

BMF, please stop drinking before noon.

Common Sense, Bowa managed for six years. In those six years, his teams never won more than 86 games. I can’t imagine they had any more or less talent than this current Mets team. Guess his Phillies and Yankees stink didn’t do much for him.

Add CJ Wilson to the list of potential FA pitchers I would offer a short-term contract to this offseason.

  8. USMF Says:

Um, problem is the Phils sucked with Bowa and the Dodgers didn’t do anything either with him. And we got BIC Willie fresh from the Spanks, Art “Howe do you manage a team” from the A’s… how did that work out?

Bench coaches are nice, managers are nice…but the talent in the field is what matters.

We need a healthy Ike, Wright and Santana.

We need Wright and Bay to produce the way they did a few years ago.

We need Pelf not to suck.

We need a closer who can actually close games.

We need a catcher who can catch the ball.

We need an real everyday 2nd basemen who can actually play…something we haven’t had the day after Fonzie left. (I don’t care if it’s Murph, Turner, Tejida and whom ever else we can find…lets just pick someone and stick with it)

We need a brain transplant for our Center Fielder…

It doesn’t matter who is coaching, if you don’t address those issues, then this team will continue to suck.

Would be on the top of my list, too. Even if they move the walls in at Citi, it will still be a much better pitcher’s park than Texas has. That being said, I don’t think there is any chance he signs for less than 4 years.

  10. BrooklynBill Says:

Common Sense - not sure Bowa is our ‘Missing Link’. We suck for several reasons least of which is probably who the Bench Coach is.

USMF - if we keep waiting on Wright, Bay, and Pelf then, the suckiness around here will continue….with or without a Jose Reyes and $15MM/yr less to spend on improving the team b/t the lines.

  11. BrooklynBill Says:

BJ - Not a bad idea, I’d like to CJ Wilson on the Mets too.

How about JJ Hardy for SS? If he were a Met in 2011, he easily would’ve led the team in HRs(30) and RBIs(80).

Reyes is 28, Hardy is 29. Reyes will cost around $15M+/yr, Hardy not as much.

  12. BlondiesJake Says:

BB, JJ Hardy isn’t bad, but he’s not likely to put up those numbers at Shea2 no matter what they do with the walls. And if the Mets let Reyes go and don’t sign any FA pitchers, meaning they still aren’t playing to win in the next year or two, I’d rather see what Tejada can do for a full year.

  13. Florida Met Fan Rich Says:

How does the pitching coach continue to hang on with this team?

I would have thought he would be the first to go.

Does he have pictures of TC?

  14. BrooklynBill Says:

FMFR - haha…maybe, ya never know.

I do think the Mets got what they expected out of this staff and then some (excluding Pelf).

BJ - I hear ya. I would still prefer to spend 6-7MM @ SS, get some more pop in the lineup, and use the extra 8 or 9MM leftover on some pitching…and not just the starting 5….our bullpen also needs fortifying. Bench strength also needs to be better.

  15. USMF Says:

BB- I kinda agree with you…I say dump Pelf, he’s never been that good and doesn’t have the tools to get better. He’s not worth the 6mil he’ll get paid. I’d rather resign Cappy for half price and better results then see Pelf again.

As for Wright and Bay…I’d like to hope that moving the fences will get them out of this power funk. We are stuck with Bay and Wright is the face of the franchise. Trading him probably won’t bring back much…his contract is for one year and he’s coming off a couple of bad years…+ the negative fan reaction of seeing Reyes walk and trading Wright will put the team back for several years.

I like CJ Wilson idea, but he’s gotta be looking for a long term deal worth 15+ mil. Is that really a smart investment at this point?

  16. Lord Charles Says:

Agree with everything USMF just write. To me, the idea of moving the fences in AND trading David Wright makes no sense. You do one, or the other, but not both. IMO, the only reason you consider moving the fences in is specifically to see if you can get Wright back to his 2008-self. If it works, then you have at least raised Wright’s value to a level that you could get a “Beltran-like” or better return at the break, but more likely, you will have re-found the player who can be a considerable part of the plans to move forward. And if it doesn’t work, it’s not like Wright’s level is going to be any lower than it is now.

  17. BlondiesJake Says:

USMF, I would only offer the starting pitchers I’ve been talking about 2 year deals. The $ amount can be a little bigger for those 2 years because it’s short term investment.

The Evil Empire goes down in flames!!!
    Thank you A-roid, you p.o.s.
Detroit Rock City is jammin tonight!
To all those so called skankee fans paying big bucks to see your team lose to one with a lesser payroll.
Now let’s see the Cards hopefully beat the philthies and Milwaukee move on to the NLCS. Maybe take it all, and the first time being a NL team ( a real league)

Hey Spike Lee! You are from Brooklyn. What’s your stupid azz doing up in the Bron-x?

  19. Met_Maven Says:

    Steve Jobs.

Who’s next? These things always come in threes… I’m thinkin Philthies!

  20. Luis Says:

Bowa plus Collins COULD equal an inferno of tension-I suspect Obie was clam and able to mollify some of Collins’ fire and intensity. TC is wound pretty tight and adding Bowa to that seems like a bad idea. And as so many have said-if the Mets dont get any better pitching Weaver and Stengel could be the managers and it wont matter- I also believe Warthen has pics of the Wilpons….How else do you explain it?
