Reyes on Cusp of History

It may be his final game in a Met uniform (but I doubt it)

It may be a seminal game in franchise history if Jose collects a couple of hits

It will definitely be the last Met game we get for a looong time

What’s the over/under of standing O’s Reyes gets? 3?

Game thread…

Speaking of bush, Phillips sitting to protect his 300 seems bush.

  2. Jomama Says:

bunt single, out of game…oh well.

  3. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

It’s a bush, bush, bush move by the Mets to pull Reyes out in the FIRST inning. That is ridiculous! NOT FAIR TO THE FANS! Not Fair to Reyes! ridiculous. I was not really engaged by the whole debate earlier in the day, despite my post, but really watching it happen–it just seems wrong.

  4. USMF Says:

wow, that was quick…I’d thought he’d wait until the 6th…

  5. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

that’s his last ever Mets ab, if that’s the way it works out. The last thing he hears is the fans booing TC’s decision. Great job. Not.

  6. IrishMike Says:

Wow. That is not the scenario I was supporting. It gives Braun a decent chance at catching him and just gave huge F-U to the fans. If you were going to take him out this early at least remove him from the field in the top of the inning. Leave it to the Mets to screw things up again.

  7. IrishMike Says:

PS did love the great bunt though.

  8. Florida Met Fan Rich Says:

WTF……WHAT A TYPICAL LOW LIFE MOVE BY THE METS!!!!

Cheat the fans!!…… I knew they would pull a bush league move! The Mets can screw anything up!!!!

  9. Jomama Says:

Braun has to go 3 for 3. Highly unlikely….

  10. IrishMike Says:

Gary says 3 for 4. If true down from highly to rather unlikely.

  11. BlondiesJake Says:

Just catching up after checking box score and saw they removed him after bunt single in the 1st. As others have said, that was NOT the way to do it, not after one AB in the 1st inning of possibly his final game with the Mets. But what else should we expect from the Mets? Knowing karma, Braun will go 3-3 and take the title tonight.

  12. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

The Brewers are playing Pittsburgh at home, with something at stake, against a rookie pitcher. Goes from rather unlikely to somewhat unlikely.

  13. BlondiesJake Says:

For those watching on TV or listening on radio, what did the announcers say about the move?

  14. Florida Met Fan Rich Says:

Screw the fans again!!!….Went to a sports bar to see game!!..Thiis team is low life!!! ….Best thing about this season ITS OVER!!!!

Fans should just leave ?… all 10 of them at once!!!!

    Screw the fan again!!!…..

  15. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

Bjake: they seemed a bit shocked, frankly. None of them agreed with it at the time, and now they continue to talk about it. They understand it, but don’t seem to agree. gary made the point that at the very least they could have pulled him at the top of the second, having him walk off the field to the crowd’s cheers. They correctly point out that Reyes got no ovation, but just some boos about the move. Now they just seem a bit bummed that it’s not a night game, and so therefore, they can’t have fun scoreboard watching.

  16. BlondiesJake Says:

FWIW, after his bunt single, had Jose stayed in the game for two more ABs and not had a hit in either of them, he would’ve finished the season with .3358 batting average.

If Braun then had a hit in his 1st AB, he would only be at .3357 so would’ve needed another hit. And if he ended the night 2-4, he would still be at .3357 so he would’ve either needed to get two straight hits or hits in two of his first three ABs and then come out of a game in which his team needs to win for home field advantage, which means he’s unlikely to be pulled after just a couple of ABs.

The scenario also assumes Reyes doesn’t get another hit in his next two ABs. If he had just one hit in three more ABs, his average would be .3370 which would make it almost impossible for Braun to catch him. At that point, Braun would have to go at least 3-4.

But at least this way the Mets turned something potentially awesome into something assanine. Thank goodness some things don’t change!

  17. IrishMike Says:

Jake all three were totally against the decision and are still talking about it. With Ralph Kiner now who is also against it. Gary, Keith and Ron sound like they would have been amenable to pulling him later and from the field not right off first. Old man old school Ralph says he should have played the whole game and I think I heard him use the word chicken.

  18. BlondiesJake Says:

How sad is it when the announcers are the only members of the team that understand the right thing to do or at least the thing to do that will appear right in the eyes of its paying customers?

  19. Lord Charles Says:

Are we sure that Reyes didn’t just pull his hamstring again?

  20. Florida Met Fan Rich Says:

What happens to the fan that might have gotten there a little late?

Maybe he got traded to the Red Sox and will be pitching tonight!

Great P.R. to sell seats next year with him gone!

  21. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

David Wright out of the game. Gotta protect that .300 career average!

  22. IrishMike Says:

LC after hearing the fans reaction that will be the cover story. Right now Jose is asking TC “I’m sorry why do I have to go to the clubhouse and have my thigh wrapped?”

  23. BlondiesJake Says:

In case you didn’t all read my stat-filled explanation above, I’ll condense it and say if Reyes continued to hit at the pace he has this year, meaning if he had one more hit in three ABs AFTER the bunt single, it would be even harder for Braun to catch him. And if he had two more, essentially impossible. So basically, the Mets made it more likely for Braun to catch Reyes by removing him. Well done, Mets, I expected nothing less.

  24. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

Gotta love Ralph. Let’s all hope he’s back next year.

  25. IrishMike Says:

Well the announcers are having fun talking about old school fighting and the home plate umpire is calling any pitch that doesn’t land in the stands a strike (it’s possible they are only giving batters two strikes actually) so it’s at least becoming fun to watch/listen.

  26. Florida Met Fan Rich Says:

Remember to buy the “Eliminated Already Package” next year.

Pick any games from July, Au, Sept!…

The last game is included in all packages!

What do you tell your kid if you took him to the game?

    This team is a disgrace!!!!!!

  27. CowCrusher Says:

I am a bit behind here since I taped the game but I swear Ralph Kiner said “shi!!y”…in the booth
    Ya gotta love ol’ Ralph:)

  28. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

FMFR: good line about the packages for next year. As far as the team goes: they ARE winning the game, aren’t they? I don’t know what you have against “meaningless games”– isn’t that all the Mets do all Spring down by you? :)

  29. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

News Flash: Ralph has just been pulled to preserve his streak of 50 years. Now we’ll see if Andy Rooney can pass him on Sunday night.

  30. Florida Met Fan Rich Says:

the dude formerly known as bill l.- Not arguing about them winning the game…I could care less!

Angry about how they abuse fans, pulling Reyes so early-You should be to if you go to the games!

Big difference about games down here!…There is hope and optimism. They are undefeated!

You actually believe they are good down here! Then they take the field up there and prove you wrong and blow it!

I can’t tell you how happy I am this Crappy season is over. Spring Training is the only time to watch this team!

  31. CowCrusher Says:

Hopefully Ralph will be with us for many years to come but I would love to see statues of Ralph, Murph and Nelson in the rotunda at New Shea.

  32. Lord Charles Says:

Well, the good news is, after tonight, the Mets will likely relinquish the title of “Worst September Collapse.”

  33. CowCrusher Says:

Well gang, outside of the news on Reyes and Santana….and a buy out of the Wilpons, I guess this and other blogs will be bit on the quiet side :)

  34. CowCrusher Says:

    Gakk! I meant ” a bit “

  35. IrishMike Says:

TC just said that Jose asked to be taken out if he led off the game with a hit. And now he is bawling like a tired six month old baby which is pathetic.

  36. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

I’m away from the tv– bawling about what?

  37. Buck Says:

TC must be a closet BMF’er…….he just used ‘irregardless’ in his post game presser. Also, just for the record, it was totally a bush leaugue move to remove him from the game.

  38. Lord Charles Says:

    tdfkabl-

Basically Collins was torn between doing what was right for the fans (keeping Reyes in) and maintaining the respect he felt he earned with his players by doing what Reyes wanted (lifting him after 1 hit).

    Good recap here:

    http://www.metsblog.com/2011/09/28/terry-collins-talks-emotionally-about-jose-reyes/

A year from now, the narrative about this event will fall one of two ways:

If Reyes stays, then this was a great move by Collins to show Jose respect and how much the Mets value him.

If Reyes leaves, then it will be seen as a punk move by a player who cared more about winning a silly title than playing a full 9 for the fans who came.

And neither will be entirely right or wrong…

  39. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

LC: thanks. Having read the blog post, sounds like you are about right in your reading of the situation.

  40. Florida Met Fan Rich Says:

If Reyes asked out of the game maybe he is not the type of guy we want to lead this team!!!

Shame on him…..How sad!….Typical Met move!!!!

  41. ProfessorReyes Says:

I’m okay with him being taken out. Maybe during the next half-inning though, when he could walk off and wave. Didn’t see the game but I heard about 10 minutes of the radio, it was all I could stand of fatcessa whining and griping about it was “only” a bunt single. Like it’s somehow “the easy way out” because he didn’t swing for the fences. Has that lardass ever tried to hit a bunt for a single??? We’ve only got 2, maybe 3, guys on the 40-man that can even try! God I hate that guy. How miserable must he be, that he’s not happy unless he’s complaining about something.

Anyway, I’m all for Reyes GETTING A HIT and then preserving his chance for the title. The title is going to last a LOT longer in Mets Lore than that last game, and he was our best team player every game he was in this season. Screw the whiney brewers fans, altho Braun is damn good too and deserves recognition; I’m totally happy and serene with the move.

Terry’s an emotional guy and I love him, I’ll be behind anybody in this organization that puts the Mets first.

  42. Original62Fan Says:

Terry Collins sold out to IrishMike in the fisrt inning.

  43. ProfessorReyes Says:

Just read that little Mets Fever title under “Mets Headlines.” That’s another thing I’m anxious to see. Do they bring Warthen back? I hope not.

  44. BlondiesJake Says:

Looks like I have to take back my ripping of the organization and just rip Reyes. That’s an awful request to make and Collins didn’t have much choice but to honor it unless he KNEW the Mets were not even going to attempt to re-sign him.

On the flip side, it tells me the Mets are going to try and re-sign him and he may very well do so.

On the flip flip side, as some have pointed out, that’s a terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE move by Reyes.

  45. Jomama Says:

I agree BJ but don’t see Reyes in a Met uni next year.

  46. BrooklynBill Says:

In a game that doesn’t mean anything, I find it hard to get on TC too much. Reyes supposedly requested out…if TC denied him that, probably would’ve put a nasty rift b/t Reyes & the organization ruining any hopes of resigning him let alone any notion of a home team discount.

Since it was Reyes’s wish to come out early, one can only hope that the baseball Gods will make things right (which means Braun ends up winning).

  47. BrooklynBill Says:

As for the bunt, no problem with Reyes using his speed to get on.

Question is, if he chose to bunt his way on when he wanted a hit so badly for the benefit of his personal stats, why didn’t he bunt for a base hit more often for the benefit of his team????

I just hope that after Reyes is gone, CitiField keeps pumping “Jose, Jose, Jose, Jose” thru their loudspeakers anyway - sounds pretty cool!!

  48. CowCrusher Says:

Hey, even Seaver and Rusty came back albeit a little while….. could Reyes and Carlos make “cameos” in the future? Especially if the HOF is inn the cards.

  49. BrooklynBill Says:

Braun 0-3! They are throwing a parade in the Dominican!!

  50. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

    Yay!!!!

  51. CowCrusher Says:

Jose, Jose, Jose, Jose. Jose, Jose

  52. BlondiesJake Says:

Was so excited for Jose until he was pulled from the game and then came clean and said he requested out. Don’t let the door hit him on the ass on his way out and use the $ for real starters, which is the biggest issue that needs to be fixed. I’ll miss the way he plays and he’s way better than whomever replaces him, but after this incident I’m not interested in rooting for him anymore.

  53. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

BJake: come on! Let’s be serious here for a second. At 12:26 p.m. Wednesday you wrote: “I have no problem with Reyes coming out, purist or not. It’s not his job to make outs so Braun can catch him.” Look I didn’t like it either, but Reyes wanted this award badly and he thought it would be fair if he played today until he helped his chances and then took himself out and took his chances. I didn’t like it, and I still don’t like it, but really the main gripe is that it happened so quickly and then TC pulled him for the pinch runner without giving the fans a chance to give him the ovation he would have deservedly received had he been pulled in from shortstop by his manager. “After this incident, I’m not interested in rooting for him anymore” seems a bit of an overreaction don’t you think?

  54. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

What a night for MLB! Great games!!

  55. CowCrusher Says:

Go Tampa Bay…. Sorry about the BoSox…. Go Detroit….. Squash the Skanks!!!

  56. so what Says:

    It’s a team sport.

Braun is going to the playoffs.

Reyes is already drinking and sleeping late. What a f**king dog. Can’t wait unitl he’s gone.

  57. CowCrusher Says:

Time for Seinfeld and Mex to buy the Mets….I wondered what Keith meant by him saying that he will be in Florida all winter/spring training. Makes you think…. Or perhaps not.
I hope SNY comes to Fort Myers in March when they play the BoSox and the Twinkies.

  58. BlondiesJake Says:

tdfkabl, my comment was in reference to IMs statement about Jose going 2-2 and then the team taking him out. At that point, he’s played 3-4 innings and whether he comes out or not he’s given the fans a chance to say goodbye and locked up the title. But him requesting to be taken out if he gets a hit in his first AB is much different.

  59. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

BJake: it’s not much different really. It’s one ab out of 600 or so. He’s been a great Met and I hope he stays.
