…and DOWN the Stretch He Comes!

On the second to last day of the season Jose Reyes smacked TWO HR’s and went 3-6 to pull ahead of Ryan Braun .336 to .335.

This sort of day should be an exclamation point in the batting crown… but there’s 1 game left.

It’s a day game so consider it your last chance to be distracted from work by the Mets. But this will surely be a game worth watching.

Great to see a curtain call for Jose Tuesday night - I expect a Jose Reyes love fest wed afternoon.

TC said he might lift Jose if he starts with 2 straight hits… I get chills just thinking about that.

C’mon Jose bring it home, Baby!!!!

Jose should play the entire game on Wednesday.

    a. It may be his last inings ever in a Met uniform
    b. It will look bush-league if he comes out of the game just to protect a batting title
    c. What do they call it bush-league? Why not clinton-league or obama-league?

  2. IrishMike Says:

If Jose starts the game off with two hits he should absolutely be replaced rigth there on whatever base he is standing on - 1. I have no problem with the idea of protecting a batting title in a meaningless game 162 and more important 2. it provides the fans the perfect opportunity for the fans to give him a huge ovation.

  3. Original62Fan Says:

IrishMike - in your scenario, he will leave the Mets with a whimper and be awarded his batting crown trophy whille playing in the Bronx or SF next year. Play the whole game like Ted Williams did (Ted actually played 2 games !! that were meaningless).

  4. IrishMike Says:

In my scenario he leaves the game to a huge ovation clearly directed at him. In your scenario the game ends with him in the dugout or on the field with 24 other guys. And whether he plays the whole game won’t affect where he is awarded his batting crown trophy.

That Ted Williams story has been haunting these guys for 70 years. I’ve decided that it is a myth.

PLAY THE WHOLE GAME!….You know there is a flip side also, suppose. He goes 0 for 2….Should Braun sit out?…Win it the right way!….TC was a jerk for saying that!!!

  6. Luis Says:

I agree(not that it matters..)that he should play the whole game and win it or lose it that way. It would be the honourable way to do it. Braun should also play the whole game.

  7. USMF Says:

Lets make sure we understand TC’s motives properly before we start to bash him…TC said that if Reyes gets two hits early he is inclined to remove Reyes so that the crowd at Citi Field can applaud him for his service.

Sure, TC is going to give Reyes a chance to win the BA title, but he feels that he should give the fans a chance to give Reyes an ovation.

while it might be considered ‘bush” to pull him early, it’s more about the respect TC has for Reyes/Fans and wants the fans to have the opportunity to show Reyes how they feel.

I like IM’s concept. If he gets hits in two ABs, give him the standing O and take him out. It’s not bush league since he’s starting the day with the lead and playing in the final game and risking the title by coming to bat (not sitting to protect it) every plate appearance. If gets hits, then Braun has a chance to get more hits and catch him.

A couple of weeks ago I just wasn’t that interested in the batting title and said so when BMF asked where all the excitement was for it. I confess I’ve been hitting refresh on my blackberry constantly the last couple of days trying to keep up on Reyes and Braun.

P.S. The always-expecting-the-worst-because-I’m-a-Mets-fan part of me is terrified Jose will hit an infield chopper in his first AB and shred his hamstring trying to beat it out, causing him to lose the batting title and sending his career into even more chaos as he approaches free agency.

BJake I was the same way - barely interested in the batting title race then suddenly 3-4 days ago got very interested, almost obsessed. And as one who considers himself a purist if I had been asked in the abstract a month ago if Jose should play the whole game I would have said yes. But now the day is upon us and I want him to win. If a 2-2 start gives him the title I want him taken out - there is really little principal to stand on here, the famous Ted Wlliams story aside. If the Mets were playing one of today’s playoff contenders* I would not want him pulled - putting out your best team in a meaningful game is important IMO. In a meaningless game - not so important.

    * It is amazing that there are four games tonight with wild card implications and a good chance of 1-2 play-in games tomorrow. Just amazing.

  11. Original62Fan Says:

I am satisfied that the “purist” IrishMike would want Jose to play the whole game.

  12. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

    LET’S GO JOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. IrishMike Says:

“I am satisfied that the “purist” IrishMike would want Jose to play the whole game.”

He would. But some alternate version of IrishMike is operating today. Who knows, maybe he will advocate the DH in the NL and more interleague play. Uh, nevermind - the alternate version of IM isn’t that much different - just on this one issue.

  14. BlondiesJake Says:

I have no problem with Reyes coming out, purist or not. It’s not his job to make outs so Braun can catch him.

I also don’t think it’s any other team’s job to beat a certain team to help another one. I could care less if the yankees played all bench guys against TB tonight. Boston had all year to win enough games on their own, if they didn’t do it, too bad. The yankees aren’t responsible for helping them.

  15. Jomama Says:

All you guys that were just “eh” on the batting title last week are suddenly now into it?!? Really? I could give a s**t - our team blows, this and the next two seasons will be 75-85 win seasons and no new players to be hopeful for. Of course as a life long Met fan I’d be happy if Jose wins it but whether he’s pulled early or not, I could care less. There’s no * by his name whether he wins it being pulled or playing the entire game so who cares. You can tell from my tone that baseball is dead to me now - all I root for is the Tankees to lose. That and my top 20 ranked Wolverines. GO BLUE.

  16. IrishMike Says:

Jake - I don’t actually disagree with your 2nd point up there - especially since you used the Yankees as an example. A playoff team has every right to rest players and arrange their rotation as they see fit. But if the Mets were playing the Braves or Cardinals today I’d want them to start their usual lineup. Simply because that’s what they would do anyway.

Yes Jomama I’m into it. I didn’t expect to be, but I am. s**t happens.

It would kinda suck if Reyes took an 0-fer in the afternoon and Braun sat back and protected his lead. I think they have been protecting him a bit lately. He came out of Sunday’s game in the 6th, for “defense.” Monday he sat until the 6th, when he pinch hit and then stayed in the game. Yesterday, he played the whole game. Maybe he’ll do that again today regardless of what Jose does: the Brewers really want to win today, because it would guarantee them home field in the playoffs. They are throwing Greinke on three days rest, just for that reason, so I don’t really think that they’ll be sitting any of their big guns, unless of course they pull out to a big lead. I think the Bucs are like 4-37 in their last 41 games at Miller Park, so the possibility of the Brewers being up big late, is a very real one.

I’m grateful to the Mets for playing an afternoon game, thus clearing my tv schedule so I can watch those wild card races tonight.

  18. Jomama Says:

bunt single, last hit as a Met. sad.

I am a bit behind here since I taped the game but I swear Ralph Kiner said “shi!!y”…in the booth
    Ya gotta love ol’ Ralph:)
