At Least We’re Better than Florida

It’s easy to look up in the standings and gripe about being 21 games behind Philly, or 15.5 games back of Atlanta but we deserve to look below and celebrate being ahead of Washington and Florida.

Yesterday’s double header sweep put us 5.5 games ahead of the Fish which is a big enough margin to make BMF “fairly comfortable” we’re not gonna finish in last place… I hope.

Florida sucks and the truth is I’d rather be U’s heading into next year than them.

Dickey was SICKK with 7 shutout innings in game 1 and Gee was fantastic allowing 1 run in 6 frames in game 2.

For some reason I find it hard to get excited about either pitcher but they keep giving us great games again and again.

I’m really beginning to like Reuben Tejada. The fact that he’s producing offensively with a .282 avg at this stage is VERY encouraging for his future in the Bigs. I’d love to see this kid man second next year and beyond.

Speaking of potential second basemen Daniel Murphy was lost to another injury. Tough break for the kid… Or should I say “tough tear for the kid” who tore his MCL to end his season.

Murph is really difficult to figure out what to do with. He’s not good defensively… anywhere, can definitely hit, but very limited power. Plus now you have to throw in 2 consecutive years ending with knee injuries.

The thing about Murphy is he seems to always be easily overlooked only to grind it out and prove his worth again and again.

I hate to say it but if the Mets are fielding a playoff caliber team Murphy ain’t getting any regular PT.

“I hate to say it but if the Mets are fielding a playoff caliber team Murphy ain’t getting any regular PT.”

I couldn’t disagree more with that statement. Guys that make the most of their talent like Murphy are almost found on winning teams. Murphy didn’t hit better than .300 by accident and his fielding issues are overblown.

Do the names Wally Backman and Tim Teufel ring a bell? Those guys could hit but weren’t stellar fielders. Or how about Howard Johnson, who had a lot more power but wasn’t a very good fielder?

Make that statement about Angel Pagan, because an inconsistent, injury-prone centerfielder without baseball smarts (can’t definitively say whether he has non-baseball smarts but seems unlikely) isn’t getting PT on a playoff caliber team. But a 2B who hits well with a little pop and grinds away to get the most out of his ability, he’s on a playoff team every year.

I’m with BJake. Murph was the 3rd leading hitter in the NL when he went down! He hustles his ass off, sometimes doing the wrong thing, but that will correct with more experience. On a team with Duda and Davis you can give up left handed power and play Murph at 2B. His D will continue to improve because he will continue to work at it. He can also play 1B and 3B. I like Tejada and Turner, but would rather see Murph at 2B. Keep Tejada to back up Jose and spell Murph.

Agree with Jake and KMac. Teams with 3-4 studs in the lineup and good starters and a great bullpen make the playoffs. If you have that, it doesn’t matter what else is on the roster.

A team with Murph as its 3rd best hitter: no playoffs. However, a team with Murphy hitting 2nd or 7th could easily be a playoff contender.

Yes Virginia!…There is a Santa Claus!…Its about time we got some payback on those stinkn fish!..Now lets kick em when thery are down!

Great start to the 11 game “Battle for the Basement”

I can’t believe Tejada and how much he has matured. He is even hitting well. If he can keep hitting it would give us something to work with in the infield next year.

That second team line up looked like a Who’s Who of nobodies, yet they looked like world beaters!

    What a great surprise yesterday!!

    LETS GO METS!

Did anyone notice that the team stayed around .500 when Wright and Ike went down, but as soon as Muprh was lost the team tanked? Sure, Reyes went down about the same time and LosB was traded…but Duda has filled in nicely at the plate for Beltran and they didn’t lose too many games when Reyes went out the first time.

Murph’s problems in the field are because of inexperience…he showed decent range at 2nd, he showed a good arm at 3rd and showed a decent glove at first. Murph was caught out of position at first and 2nd a few times…but he’s had limited playing time there…he’ll be fine given time.

(I actually think the Mets might be better defensively if Murph was at third and Wright moved to 2nd or LF)

Unfortunately, Murphs inexperience and some bad luck have cost him a lot of playing time.

I like Tejada, but he doesn’t bring a whole lot to the table. His glove is decent and has a good arm. He has Castillo power and no speed. He hasn’t played enough to prove he can even be a high on base guy. Tejada is best used as a bench guy to spell 2nd and Short.

Look at Turner, he was hitting great, there was even a point in the season that he would have gotten on ROY votes, but teams figured out how to pitch to him and how to position themselves in the field.

If you want to talk about guys who aren’t on a playoff team, you gotta start with Pelf. There is no way that you have a guy that inconsistent be a “top of the rotation guy”. And for the excuse that Terry naming him the “ace” caused Pelf to struggle proves even more that the guy is not a champion.

BTW, saying that “at least we’re better than Florida” is like saying, we may be as ugly as B-Jake, but at least we aren’t as ugly as Phan…sorry, ugly is still ugly and still goes home lonely…

  7. The Coop Says:

Hey USMF!! Having met both BJake and Phan, I can attest that NEITHER of them are ugly!!!

  8. JoMama Says:

What good is a guy who hustles, makes bonehead plays in the field and on the bases, can hit well but is always hurt? I like Murph but I’m not convinced he can stay healthy enough for any team to count on him. Had we been in a race the last few years, he would have been on the DL. More playing time in the field and playing 140+ games a few years in a row will convince me. What happened to him anyway? I didn’t see the play….

  9. USMF Says:

Coop, don’t ruin my fun…besides, B-Jake and Phan are some of the only few “ol’school BMF’s who I can rip and won’t get super-sensitive about it…

remember the days of Pink Bats, supporting breasts, talking about food and “use to loving the water”? Those used to be the golden days here before people started taking this sh!t (and themselves) way too seriously.

It’s hard to even make a joke anymore without someone getting all upset over it.

  10. BlondiesJake Says:

USMF, my wife doesn’t think I’m ugly so that’s all that matters!

Thanks The Coop. You’re pretty cute yourself!

JoMama, I understand why you would want to see Murphy play more, but I think you are shortchanging him a bit. He was taken out with a cheap play last time and a freak accident this year. I’d hardly say he is injured all the time. It’s not like he’s popping hammies or spraining pinkies.

  11. BlondiesJake Says:

USMF, I had totally forgotten about the discussions supporting breasts. The people getting upset at that had to be among the most sensitive, attention-needing people I’ve ever come across!!!

  12. A Phanatic Says:

    Boobs.

  13. USMF Says:

Compared to MtMF, we all look like Amy Winehouse’s corpse. (what? Too soon?)

Sadly, even my wife thinks I’m somewhat attractive…I know see didn’t marry me for my money.

Speaking of MtMF, haven’t seen the silly little Muppet around here lately…did he jump off the Shea bridge?

  14. USMF Says:

    Beer.

  15. KMac Says:

I agree with eveything USMF said, especially the beer part.

  16. The Coop Says:

    Boobs. Supporting breasts?

    What have I missed?

  17. USMF Says:

I remember BMF issuing a public apology because “he was a big fan of breasts”…comments after MLB started using Pink Bats on Mothers day for Breast Cancer…

It was pretty funny IRREGARDLESS of who got offended.

  18. CowCrusher Says:

There is Nothing wrong with supporting the fairer sex’s good health that I can see ;)

  19. USMF Says:

My biggest surprise today is; I suggested moving Wright to the OF so Murph can play 3rd and nobody got upset…

  20. KMac Says:

I’d have no problem with Murph at 3B. He played it pretty well while Wright was out. David can be spectacular with the glove and horrible with his arm. I don’t know if David ever played OF or would be open to it but it would be a good way to keep another strong bat in the lineup. Of course, what would they do with Bay? Jake would be so upset if he sat :-)

  21. USMF Says:

I’ve heard rumors that the Mets are considering dumping Pagan and moving Bay to Center Field next year…While I think Bay is a above average LF’er, I don’t think he has the speed to be anything more than a below average CF’er

With Duda in Right, we need a strong CF’er…not sure if Pagan even qualifies for that anymore…

  22. CowCrusher Says:

Can Bay steal bases as good as Pagan? Just wondering.
