Duda Delivers
It’s no secret BMF is a Lucas Duda fan and I’m gonna take this moment to yet again sing his praises.
It was another huge night for the young, and no-longer doe-eyed, Met. Stroking a 2 run game winning hit is the latest notch in Duda’s swagger belt.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say Duda has the intangible of swagger… but he’s working on it and when he finally gets there he’s can be a beast.
Pelfrey was once again the Pelf we’ve seem so many times before - dominant during much of the game but a lapse in focus cost him a good outing.
City Gridiron premieres in PIX 11 this Sun11A and episode one is still not quite yet done…
Gotta go!

One of the best things about the 9th inning last night was that neither Wright nor Duda tried to do too much. It would have been very easy for either of them, and especially Wright, to go up there looking to jack one out of the park. But instead, but took nice, easy swings, went up the middle, and the rest is history.
I got a little nervous before the game with everyone talking about how the veterans (i.e. Wright and Bay) needed to step up now. They don’t. They need to keep playing the way they are playing. Trying to “step up” is exactly what got Wright out of his groove in 2009 and 2010.

Here’s a question: do the Mets end the season with Carlos Beltran as their leading HR hitter, or do either Wright and Bay catch him? And if they do, does either get to 20?

I hope Bay leads the team just so there is more ammunition for the Bay arguments on BMF!

Good fight in a comeback victory for a team that really had no reason to play that way!
As long as they continue to scratch, claw and fight in every game, it might set the tone for next year.
Thats all you can ask for from this team for the rest of the year.
Looking forward to the call ups and seeing what else we got on the farm!

Good luck finishing the show, BMF!
Great win last night—I think Gary got a little choked up in the booth. You can fault this team for many things, but one thing they definitely have is heart. I like them and I’m very happy with the progress we’ve seen this season even with all the disappointments.

Gary was pretty emotional FGMF. The way he sounded you would have thought they just won the world series or something instead of getting back to .500.
The other thing I noticed on the post game is how Ronnie kept referring to the wild pitch in the 9th as a passed ball. The pitch bounced 5 feet in front of home but once a pitcher always a pitcher I guess.

FGMF,
I agree. You take this team and add for next year:
1. Health.
2. An ace.
3. A closer.
And you would have a team that could legitimately contend for a WC, and do so without gutting the farm system or ballooning the payroll.

Agreed. I think we could also improve at catcher and in the pen. Of course this is assuming Reyes, Johan, Ike, Wright, etc are coming back.
I much rather watch these kids fight for a job and play their hearts out than a bunch of aging free agents phone it in. That shot last night of Mike Baxter’s family cheering says it all. This is a team that actually feels like a Mets team: scrappy, tough, a little messy, occasionally miraculous.
I’m not sure what we can do about all the injuries—they happen to every team but ours do seem consistently mishandled. I hope Sandy can evaluate that in the off season and figure something out.
Add some players, lower ticket prices and paint the outfield wall Shea blue, and I’ll have nothing to complain about! Hahaha, RIGHT.

“Heart” “Scratch and claw” “scrappy” - wait a minute! I thought this team had no guts?!

IM, please don’t encourage HBS to return!

I have to admit that after Igarashi’s horrendous inning, I really had no faith in this Met team coming back. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the 2 run 8th followed by what I feel could be a mentality changing 9th. In that I mean these kids have fight - they find ways to win, despite a AAA pen - and can use this momentum as a springboard for next year. We all realize that this year is lose - even you Howard - so building confidence and adding a few needed arms would go a long way. They can score runs. What a great feeling to see Baxter’s family and have Duda hit home the game winning knock. Let’s go Mets!

Although I love Reyes and really hope he is back next year, it cracks me up when his agent speaks of him as a saint that he decided not to negotiate during the season to focus on his game. Is he being ‘that strong’ knowing that he will be making a minimum of $15mil a year going forward and already has made enough money for a few lifetimes?
Think of people like Jake who wait all day for the unemployment check to come in the mail, and being at the mercy of the govt not extending his benefits. Him not discussing the problematic situation at hand I can commend, not Reyes’s agent.

Now that Reyes is out again, I think it would be a perfect time for him, his agent and Sandy to sit down and talk contract. It won’t distract from his playing. If he did sign it would be a good boost for the team for the rest of the year knowing Jose will be back.

Truckin, got my chips cashed in,
Keep truckin’, like the Duda Man!!
I love “Purple Haze”– but this is what should be playing when Lucas strides to the plate.
August 9th, 2011 at 1:28 pm
No guts. Who said that?
August 9th, 2011 at 2:21 pm
Heart and guts are one thing but winning World Series’ puts fannies in the seats! Most of all, it means more $$, which is all that matters….business-wise.
August 9th, 2011 at 2:53 pm
cowcrusher: so what are you suggesting? These Mets aren’t winning the world series this year, or even making the playoffs, but they are a young team that’s showing a lot of heart and guts. Isn’t that what you want to see?
August 9th, 2011 at 4:48 pm
Wow Cow - that’s some pretty deep insight. I had no clue that WS’s fills stadiums or that money is all that matters for clubs. You should start your own blog and call it “Things That No One Else Knows”
August 9th, 2011 at 6:11 pm
That would be the sister site for the “Howard knows all about the Mets and you don’t” website
August 9th, 2011 at 7:37 pm
Hey,
I wasn’t dissin’ the team…they are fun to watch and a work in progress. I was merely playing devil’s advocate for what matters …business wise.
I wouldn’t be at a Syracuse Chiefs game rooting for the Bisons right now!
Sorry, I bothered to point out Exhibit A. The 800 pound Gorilla in the court room.
