Good news boys and girls the 2010 Rule 5 Draft is on Deck today.
You know you’re a baseball geek if you get excited about the Rule 5 player draft.
This draft essentially allows teams to draft players not protected by another team’s 40man roster. The catch being this player has to remain on the new team’s roster all season otherwise the old team can purchase the player back for a nominal amount of cash.
I certainly don’t claim to have any real knowledge of the player pool but BMF does have a rooting interest in Met destiny child Pedro Beato.
The 6′6″ local kid who pitched for Brooklyn’s Xaverian just happened to he born the day the Mets won the WS in 1986.
We already drafted Beato a couple years back but lost him to the O’s a year later when the Mets frustratingly refused to pay above slot for his first contract.
It just feels like the baseball Gods have given us another chance at this kid who currently projects as a set-up guy.
The way I see it we can afford to carry a guy this season since we don’t expect to win and we’ve got very little payroll flexability.
And if the kid blossoms the upside the upside for ticket sales and PR is off the hook.
