I like Murph, but he may be the dumbest baserunner in the MLB.
Niese and Reyes, held on the catch, Murph put his head down and ran to second. Eric Simmons of Amazin’ Avenue noted of Murph last week that he runs every play like there are two outs. It was not meant to be a compliment…
I know the team needs to score runs, but Niese needs to learn how to avoid a big inning. He got lucky Morse is a terrible baserunner and Igarashi got a couple of strikeouts or it would’ve been another 3+ runs inning against him.
Great job once again by Willie Harris. Top 8th, down a run, 2-0 count and the guy with no power swings. Of course, with the count 2-2, he took called strike three. He is fast becoming my most disliked Met!
Jake, rather than having to blog to nobody during the Mets games as I see that you always do, I found a guy sitting on the sidewalk with an old can with some nickels in it who said he would be willing to talk to you during Mets game for 2 bucks a game. I told him that both of you would have to communicate in person during games because you are already on hold on your phone dialing into all of the sports radio shows for the next day to give your astute comments to the hosts. I bet you cannot wait to tell the hosts tomorrow how you admire the Braves with them getting Bourn. That comment is a doozy.
Well, if there were any unanswered questions about Parnell, the jury is in. This guy cannot handle any form of pressure. He has showed it every time in the past and is showing it again now. 100mph fastball + 0 guts = lousy relief pitcher. Parnell’s expressions while on the mound looks like the face of Marvis Frazier when in the ring with Tyson before his 1st round knockout as he basically said ‘I know I am about to be unconscious, just make it as painless as possible’.
Enough of Angel Pagan already. We might as well give Hairston a shot to play center. Collins said at the beginning of the year that Hairston can play center. Pagan is horrible. I cannot take another 2 bouncer to 2b as he does every freaking time.
It is kind of sad when the only relief pitcher we can half count on barely made the major league club after starting the year in the minors. And Izzy can make you really uptight too.
Incredible losing to the Nats 2 of 3. What a terrible weekend of Mets baseball.
Howard, I’d rather talk to guy sitting on the sidewalk during the game because I bet he wouldn’t try to prove how much he knew and in the process reveal how clueless he is about baseball. I’d ask you to pay the 2 bucks but as your tipping at Blondies has already proven you clearly can’t afford to pay that.
BJake: “as dumb as a box of Pagans.” Love it. But I did love his play in the 9th on that bunt. So, overall I still love Murphy and want to see him stick around. Pagan on the other hand…… I can’t disagree with Lou Pinella’s assessment of Pagan when he played for him in Chicago– that it would be hard to win with him on your club.
I agree about Niese, but think he’ll figure it out. As far as Parnell goes, he’s a work in progress. He’s getting smacked around at the moment, but I still think he’s our closer of the future.
Tough loss today, but Jordan Zimmerman is a rising star. And I love Storen.
You can cut the sexual tension between Jake and Howard with a knife. Will we ever get to see them kiss, or is this one of those Sam and Diane things that will take like 8 seasons and ruin the show?
tdfkabl, I also really like Murphy, he just tends to make really boneheaded plays. I said last year Pagan was a one-year wonder. Lots of people wanted to believe he suddenly blossomed but it just doesn’t happen that way very often. As to Niese, let’s hope he veers off the current, “I’m doing my Nuke LaLoosh imitation by being unable to escape the big meltdown,” mess. And I also think Parnell has pitched extremely well for a long stretch when he came off the DL so I’m not anywhere close to declaring him unable to handle pressure like Howard the Baseball Savant (HBS) wants to because he’s had a rough patch. Of course, HBS would probably have demanded Mariano be traded if he ever blew a save.
FGMF, you should stick to staring at Pagan’s ass (which is likely where his brain is located).
When I read Jake’s ridiculous blogs, I wonder why I even address then. I guess I feel like maybe he can actually learn something from myself and others who contribute to the blog.
Parnell is having a rough patch??? The guy was so bad the previous season as a relief pitcher that the Mets decided to try to make him a starting pitcher. Rough patch? The guy has been so bad that even with the tremendous holes the Mets have had in their relief corp, they had Parnell in the minor leagues. Rough patch??? The guy is so awful that even with only one guy, who by the way is breaking down before us, able to close in Izzy, they still wont dare make Parnell the closer.
Unlike Jake, I do not have to see Parnell for another few years to realize that this guy does not have what it takes to be a closer. I am sure that Jake is still waiting for Kyle Farnsworth to become a top closer. Why not? He throws 100mph. He must be a solid closer one day.
Great logic, great baseball sense.
Howard: parnell is a young guy, who is a work-in-progress. He has limited major league experience and a terrific arm. Most baseball people figure him as closer material, despite his current struggles. He was the Mets pitcher of the month in June. Yes, he has not been pitching well lately, but I certainly hope the Mets aren’t as hasty in their evaluations of him as you seem to be. Who else other than Aroldis Chapman consistently throws the ball at 100+ ? Who else can throw a slider at 91+ ? For stretches at a time, the kid has been unhittable. For other stretches, he gets beat up. But I definitely want to be patient with a kid with his talent.
I’m just shocked a ML team hasn’t made Howard a scout yet. The guy is a genius, he can evaluate talent like nobody else. What a shame he’s wasting his talents here.
Few things - Willie Harris sucks really bad, almost as bad as another OF whose name I will not mention. Case in point: early innings, men on 1st and 2nd, no out, Wille on a 1-1 pitch bunts and pops up to the 3rd baseman. We would have plated a run had he been able to move those guys.
Another thing - Pagan is Pagan, just not a great player with a brain that’s not getting any smarter. Both he and Murph had the same teacher it seems - how in the world does Murph get doubled off with bases juiced like that? Gary and Ron said they have never seen that before - assuming they’ve watched a billion more games than I have, this is unacceptable. Honestly, little league.
Parnell - as many people have said, 100 on the gun is great but with no control and no nuts, I’d rather have someone throwing 10 mph less with just a bit more control. What he doesn’t realize is that with almost no break on that fastball, guys at this level can catch up and subsequently, tee-off. He needs to know when to throw his off-speed stuff or moreso, trust it.
Lastly, I’m fine with young guys like Murph or Parnell “learning” as they go - it’s a perfect season for it seeing that we’re still somewhat competitive in most games and there’s still some pressure to win. Guys like Harris, Bay and Pagan aren’t really getting any better and whether they stay or go makes no real difference. Back when I was Bay-bashing, I thought we still had a shot at the WC - I’ve changed my tune to the point that all I want to see are good games so his ineptitude at the plate doesn’t get me as fired up (I with that were totally true, he makes too much $ for me not to get bent) as it used to. In order of suckeness, here’s my list:
1. Bay
2. Murph
3. Pagan
4. Duda
Problem is, of those 4, at least 2-3-4 can hit, #1 can’t hit squat.

Following online…did Daniel Murphy just pull a Pagan? How did he get doubled off?

As I like to say, he’s as dumb as a box of Pagans. Angel is the standard bearer for stupidity, Murph sadly seems close behind.

It was only fitting the other night when Murphy cut off Pagan’s perfect throw to the plate that probably would’ve nailed the runner coming home.

Does the loss mean we almost gained a game in the loss column but didn’t?
