Was in manager’s office when Terry Collins addressed the media. He said part of the reason the Mets are reluctant to DL Reyes is because the series right out of the break is against the Phillies and he would have to miss that. Reyes is expected to take part in BP and Collins expects to meet and discuss the situation with Sandy Alderson later in the day.
Also, Collins says he’s leaning toward having Ronny Paulino catch Mike Pelfrey every time, especially if Pelfrey responds well tonight. He says they need a big game out of Pelfrey tonight and it’s a big game for the Mets, especially since starting Thursday they are likely to face seven all-star starters in a row, including Clayton Kershaw, Ryan Vogelsong, Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels. YIKES!

Interesting stat from the Mets game notes:
After plating four of their five runs last night with two outs, the Mets have scored 160 runs with two outs, the second-most in the majors behind the Red Sox (165).

Reyes was just in batting cage. Taking some basic cuts from the left side, slashing line drives. Looked good and didn’t seem to be favoring anything.
July 5th, 2011 at 9:16 pm
Reyes just took some cuts from the right side and even launched one into the bleachers. Again, he is swinging free and easy and is smiling and enjoying himself. These are good signs.
July 5th, 2011 at 9:22 pm
After another round in the cage, Reyes turned and did a bodybuilding pose toward the stands.
July 5th, 2011 at 9:25 pm
As BP ended, Reyes jogged off the field no problem, then stopped by the dugout to sign a bunch of autographs, sending a couple of youngsters into hysterics when he put his signature on their baseball cards. It’s official…I HAVE A MANCRUSH ON JOSE REYES!

Great reporting, BJake!!! Thanks for the inside info.

Strangely, this team seems to thrive on good starting pitching…it’s the no names, washed up has beens, or minor league call ups for a spot start who give us fits.
BJ - Like I was saying, I do hope Bay can continue producing, I don’t *hate* him or want to see him fail. He was my hero for a day but he still has a way to go to get out of this fan’s doghouse.
Good news on Reyes.

FGMF, just doing what I can to help the ballclub, er, BMF. Now just anxiously awaiting Gene Simmons throwing out the first pitch. Maybe his tongue will inspire our favorite hand licker to have the big outing TC expects.

One final pre-game note…just peed next to Vin Scully in the press box bathroom!
July 5th, 2011 at 10:06 pm
Did you peek?
July 5th, 2011 at 10:08 pm
I didn’t. But we did discuss the fact Aaron Miles is the #3 hitter in their lineup tonite, which tells you just how bad it is for LA right now.
July 5th, 2011 at 10:25 pm
Weird statistical trend from 1st inning…Pelfrey’s first four pitches to each hitter were strike, ball, ball, strike. And yes, I’m already a little punchy having been at the park since 4pm PT.
July 5th, 2011 at 10:33 pm
I’m just glad you didn’t peek.
July 5th, 2011 at 10:39 pm
I’m just glad they didn’t cross the streams.
July 5th, 2011 at 10:45 pm
That would be bad!
July 5th, 2011 at 10:47 pm
Just because I get stat crazy, I’ll mention Pelfrey had the same strike, ball, ball, strike sequence to Kemp leading off the 2nd, then reversed it with Loney, going ball, strike, strike, ball.
July 5th, 2011 at 10:55 pm
Me and my stupid brain. Just as I was thinking about how well Pelfrey was pitching, he gives up an opposite field double to the opposing pitcher.
July 5th, 2011 at 10:56 pm
Thankfully, Angel Pagan makes a complete bonehead play and allows Gwynn to go to second after he singles when it was clear as day Lilly would be stopped at 3rd.
July 5th, 2011 at 11:00 pm
Attaboy Pelfrey, way to get out the inning getting two weak ground balls.
July 5th, 2011 at 11:19 pm
Thank you, Matt Kemp, for hustling, er, loafing, from 2nd to 3rd, allowing Ruben Tejada enough time to fire a strike to Paulino to nail you at the plate. Ladies and Gentlemen, the Dodgers All-Star!
July 5th, 2011 at 11:25 pm
Pelfrey is making it harder on himself than he needs to and it’s probably going to bite him in the ass before this game is over. Still, I can’t be too critical when he’s thrown four scoreless innings.
July 5th, 2011 at 11:33 pm
So after two awful ABs, including one with runners on the corners and one out where he popped up, Carlos Beltran crushes one to put the Mets up 2-0. And chalk up two more two-out runs for the Mets!
July 5th, 2011 at 11:50 pm
It’s the classic rally against Pelfrey…two outs, bases empty, 1-2 count and he hits punch-and-judy Aaron Miles. Now after Kemp’s single and a walk, here he is again with the bases loaded. Can he wriggle off the hook again?
July 5th, 2011 at 11:51 pm
Nothing quite like the line drive that hangs up. The crowd ROARED and then groooooaned. Phew!
July 5th, 2011 at 11:53 pm
Box score may look good but Mini Pelf is dodging bullets…
July 5th, 2011 at 11:56 pm
BrooklynBill, you are absolutely correct.
Btw, Bay told me he was going to hit a HR for you, Howard and JoMama.
July 6th, 2011 at 12:28 am
An aside…the official scorer at Dodger Stadium sucks.
July 6th, 2011 at 12:48 am
BAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 6th, 2011 at 1:05 am
Very nice! How about that Jason Bay: “that puppy is off the leash” TWICE! Hey, Bjake, thanks for the inside reporting. Glad to hear you’ve still got that press pass.
July 6th, 2011 at 1:47 am
tdfkabl, glad we could all enjoy the puppies off the leash. Thanks for following along with my craziness.
