No Worries Over Santana

Let’s talk about pitching…

There are some pitchers you worry about after a bad spring start and there are others you simply don’t. Johan Santana falls into the latter category.

.Who cares if he got knocked around by the Astros and taken deep by KazMat of all people? When the bell rings Johan will be the warrior we all know. There is no questioning that Johan is an elite pitcher who has proven he can and will get the job done.

This is in GREAT contrast to Oliver Perez whose crappy outing is cause for concern on numerous levels:

• He’s gotta prove he’s healthy

• He’s gotta show us he has the ability to throw strikes w/o the ball leaving the yard

• He’s gotta show us he has the mental fortitude not to become a puddle on the mound during a rough patch

Unfortunately I have zero faith Ollie will do any of the above. In fact anything other than complete catastrophe will be a pleasant surprise to BMF.

I was shocked at how many people were down on Maine on yesterday’s boards. The guy hasn’t been healthy in 2 years yet he came out and not only threw strikes but struck people out. Granted it was against a watered down, late in game, spring lineup but it was enough to have General Manuel raving about his stuff and location.

To me USS looks well on his way to a bounce back season… at least I hope with all my might…

Big Pelf has essentially been MIA since taking that ball off his knee so we’re gonna have to wait for a larger sample size.

And You gotta figure Johnny Niese will hold down the 5th starter role. This is great because as much as I like Figgy he’s not the future. Niese needs to take the ball every 5th day in the bigs to continue his maturation process.

Meanwhile it looks like Jenrry Mejia is being stretched out for use as a starter – he’s slated to go 4 innings next outing. I can’t help but think how dominant he might be in the pen but we’re gonna need another arm once the team finally gives up on Perez.

So I think it’s the right call to send young Jenrry to start in AA until he gets promoted later this summer…?

***

Quick Hits:

• Ike Davis hit another HR…

• Great to see Wright jack his second of the spring – too bad neither would’ve been out of CityField

I have always believed that OP has a severe form of ADHD, a mental defect where he is simply unable to focus. He just cannot focus himself from pitch to pitch, batter to batter, let alone from game to game for a whole season.

He is not even in the same stratosphere as Santana, who is as focused as any pitcher EVER.

My favorite part of yesterday’s game was when Kody Klemens was announced and a heckler shouted loudly “your dad’s a cheater”! Cut to a shot of dirtbag daddy in the stands- priceless! Kudos SNY!

The raccoon was pretty funny too.

  2. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

I believe in Maine, I saw him pitch in LA and he looked like Cy Young material. Now he just has to do that every 5 days. But honestly, I think he’s got the goods, and he is really tough, he didn’t even tell anyone how much pain he was in. Give the guy a break.

I’m not getting super psyched or depressed about ANYBODY in spring. Let the kids play and the rest warm up, and give everyone a chance to earn their spot. But Please, PLEASE, let Jose play already!!!!!

  3. Reyes'Thyroid Says:

Jose will be growing man breasts soon.

As Dictator and Unofficial President of the BMF Oliver Perez Fan Club, I resemble that remark.

Five runs and seven hits in three innings and a 15.00 ERA does not make a season.

OP is going to have a monster year and lead us to the promise land!

Get your bandwagon tickets while they are still available!…..

    FMFR
Are going to Mets at BoSox on 3/17?

  6. Cowcrusher Says:

    Are you…..(dang keyboard :) )

  7. Florida Met Fan Rich Says:

No…I wish I was..My job is getting in the way, I hate when that happens!

My next game is Sat vs Tigers. The Bosox used to be a night game…but they are not playing anynight games this year.

I guess the PSL crowd gets to liquored up!

  8. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

Ohmigod this Reyes thing is getting out of control…friggin Mets.

  9. Matt the Met Fan Says:

BMF, you really think those HR’s would not have gone out in Citifield? …ugh ..
bring in those fences !! LOL

I’m thrilled as anything to see Maine coming back to form. When he and Big Pelf were both up there, I sensed a kind of friendly competitiveness between them and I’d like to see that back.

The thing that really, really pisses me off about Ollie is that you have to get him angry before he pitches all out. That’s just not right.

My son’s current favorite is Bell, believe it or not. He thinks Bell learned from his misteaks and it transformed him into some kind of animal. I like the way he runs out!

A few years ago I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, kind of out of nowhere after feeling crummy for a few months. I remember clearly how the doctor said if I was to get one or the other, it’s much better to have hypo- than hyper-, which can wreak havoc on your health.

  11. The Lip Says:

    This is so f–king right-on.

Great post, BMF. That’s the shizz-nitt in a nutshell.

A healthy Johnny Maine, Pelf, and JOHAN can be lights out - if only this team canscore. In no way am I saying this will happen. If the season were somehpw cancelled and you were to play a best of 7 WS in April, MAine, Pelf, and JOahn (not the order) could ice the cake. K-rod every night.

Yet alas - if they could onlcy score runs, rub bases, stop crhying over stubbed toes, and give a sheet about winning.

  12. CowCrusher Says:

    Ok then,
I’ll try to take some notes:) and pics as well.
We will be in the bleachers near right field. Look for the few orange and blue in sea of red.
