USS Maine Key to Season

Remember the Maine… From 2007?

Well that’s the warrior we need back in the ‘10 because if there’s one player, who in my estimation, can make or break our season it’s Johnny Maine. .

I guess I should refine that last statement to include the word “pitcher”   because I think everyone agrees Reyes holds our fate in his hands.

But the unassuming Maine definitely has the stuff to be a legit #2 starter… or at least he used to have it. The question is will he ever deliver at that level again?

Luckily if Monday’s outing is any indicator he’s healthy and headed in the right direction. USS posted a line of 1.2 IP, 1R, 2H and 1BB and 4K’s.

He was yanked after 39 pitches and it was great to hear Jerry raving about the way Maine threw.

As psyched as BMF is about Ike Davis, F-Mart and Mejia (who zipped thrub3 scoreless innings) John Maine’s performance has to be the most encouraging performance of the Met spring so far.

Don’t sink the ship with expectations!

  2. Florida Met Fan Rich Says:

Are you kidding me? …You call that a performance?

Omir Santos…a catcher…inside the park “stand up with out a throw stopping at third to take a rest” grand slam…now that was performance!

let’s see: we’ll take those numbers out over say, seven innings. ok, let me get my calculator: 1.66 is to 7 as yesterday’s numbers are to x. Solve for X. Hmmm. Maine’s line for 7 innings would be: 4.2 runs, 8.4 hits, 17 K’s and 164 pitches thrown. Sounds like mid-season Maine. ;) Pulled in the fifth after he crosses the hundred pitch mark…. Heeeeerrrreee’s Johhhhhhnnnnny!!! Better get Feliciano up in the pen.

BMF - for once, I actually agree with your post. I have felt for several years that Maine is the key to the pitching staff. He was the ace (even with Pedro on the staff) in ‘07.

I agree with the dude formerly known as bill l.

BMF - If you think that was a good performance I have a ticket for you on another ship

  6. Reyes'Thyroid Says:

Maybe Maine should pay a visit to my Doc in Toronto. He can help.

  7. fredsaid Says:

Good first start. No pain. And if he was allowed to continue on, he may have stopped the run from scoring.

  8. USMF Says:

Other than the Pitcher, Catcher and the coaching staff, we have know idea what is a good start is right now.

    A

  9. USMF Says:

At this point of the season, a pitcher is either working on arm strength, mechanics and/or working on a certain pitch.

Oh’Pea looked bad the other day, but he was just throwing fastball for strikes and he wasn’t throwing any sliders…Maine looked decent but threw 40 pitches to get two outs in the 2nd…

Now was it a good start or a bad start? We don’t know because we don’t know what the goal of the outing is.

We have to wait until their last two outings in ST to really know where these guys really are.

  10. WWMD Says:

John Maine the key to our season??? Gawd help us.

  11. Matt the Met Fan Says:

I agree .. Maine and Pelfrey are key .. My biggest issue with this off season - not picking up a reliable 200 innings pitcher (Marquis, Piniero) and now we are stuck counting on guys like Maine, Pelf, and (gulp!) Ollie

  12. Matt the Met Fan Says:

    OMG .. Ike Davis went deep .. again !!??!! 11 for 20 .. 5 extra base hits?

“How you going to keep me down on the farm .. now that I’ve Pareee … ”

Daniel Murphy who? aka Wally Pipp ..

  13. The Lip Says:

Ike throws with his left hand, too. Finally. i HAVE NEVER SUBSCRIBED TO TO Reyes’s success being tied to that of the team. I think that by having him in the 3 hole, the Mets have conceded this. It’s time to start using his bat for power. The move would have been to keep Gomez for speed and be the table setter and segue into the power of Wright, Reyes, et al.
This was not to be. Time to move on and extract desperatley needed power. Spring performances don’t mean a thing. I am in Dude’s camp inasmuch as if these bozos do not produce, Maine will be hoisted after 5.

i’m a big fan of Maine and wish him the best. he clealry has what it takes to be great. ANyone remember the second to last game of 2007? Perez worries me. I was in favor of signing him, but he needs to go by the ASB if he’s still a headcase. he can be unloaded for mor erospects on which to build. it’s going to be a long season one way or the other. this team needs to stay ahead. get ahead and stay ahead. i’ve long felt we need bats more than pitching. pelf, johan, and maine can be more than adequate if their team can score. thorw in niese - suffer thru the pains of growth - and work out a 5 should Oliver fall off the radar. i have major concerns about offense. with reyes battign furst, out power can be isolated. reyes may have to look at being a new age shortstop.

  14. Big Tony Says:

I like Johnny Maine. Always have. But the team goes nowhere this year without Jose.

  15. Reyes'Thyroid Says:

Sorry Big T but this team goes nowhere without me!
