Ike is Slammin’
In case young Daniel Murphy wasn’t aware, younger Ike Davis just reminded him that first base will be his before too long.
2 walks and a grand slam pushed Ike into the early lead of Met Spring MVP. It’s easy to say the Salami was the most impressive but a kid like Ike who is patient enough to walk twice in his second game speaks volumes too.
That said the Granny was a monster blast!!!
I don’t think he’ll be at NewShea in April but he’s a comin’….
Quick Hits:
• Great to see Bay standing in the box in full Met uniform. I’m convinced he’ll make a big impact on this team
• McGwire apparently snuck into the stadium late which was an obvious attempt to avoid the NY media. He’s such a coward is but the funny thing is he’s making it worse for himself because if he ducks everyone all spring the heat will only be turned up when the Cards visit New Shea.
• Re: RA Dickey, i’ve never been a big fan of knucklers. Gotta tip yer hat to Wakefield and I loved Kent Tekulve but I feel like knuckleballers always averge out to .500… at best. But it’s early in spring and sometimes they can be a good change of pace so I’ll keep an open mind.
• Love seeing Straw in the dugout and working with Met players. Darryl discussed working with guys like Wright and Frenchy and ya gotta believe his superstar presence rubs off
• Gotta shout out Brooklyn product and Cardinals pitcher Adam Ottovino. The tall righty went to Berkely Carroll a tiny private school a dog walk away from BMF’s crib. With Ottovino and Julio Lugo the Cards must lead baseball with 2 Brooklynites in camp.

Mojo Kitty rocks the batting helmet for luck!

I went to ASU the same time that Ike was there, so I saw him play a lot in college..dude can just flat hit, and it usually looks effortlessly. While his glove is good at first, I think it’s being overhyped a little..it’s good, but nothing special. He’s just a really good athlete is general..he spent half of his time playing the outfield in college also. Its cool to see someone you watched as an amateur really make a push to be a big league star, especially when its with the Mets!!!!

Aside from Ike, did you see the stroke on that lefty hitting outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis? Sweeet!

I was sitting on the berm at Legends Field and watched Ike’s homer fly over my head. It was pretty impressive. I also saw a potential eighth inning reliever (Mo Green) get shelled by Cardinal AA talent…not so impressive. And RA Dicky…oy…I guess this is what makes the Mets a .500 team.

“I like Ike!” It was great to see the ball bounce as it hit the sidewalk at the top of the berm!
Great Trifecta weekend!
Reyes opener!…Heading to the ballpark today for game vs. Fish!…Semi-Live report today, depending on how good the leftfield Tiki Bartender pours and how close the beer vendor is!
“A Bad day at the ballpark is better than a good day at work!”
Great weekend!….Mets & Nats in Melbourne (Sat) Mets & Nats in PSL (Sun)!..I’m There!
Thank You Baseball Gods…I must be in METS Heaven!

Can everyone please calm down and not get ahead of ourselves about Ike? and for that matter, Thole, F-Mart, Neise and Mejia.
I like all these guys and think they have a world of potential, but in reality, what have they done?
Neise has had as many bad starts as good ones in his short time pitching in MLB and has had moderate success in the minors.
Mejia has a great moving fastball, but is too wild to be ready for the bigs, and has a lot to prove before anyone should even consider comparing him to Mariano.
Ike has played one full year in the Minors and is already the next Teixeira? Let’s face it, he’s had two good games this ST hitting off Minor league pitchers who are throwing 80% and still working out their mechanics.
Thole looked good last year hitting, but he’s got a lot of work and time to put in behind the plate before I’d ever consider handing over a rotation.
F-Mart looks good when he’s healthy, but needs to play a full season before I’d be ready to bring him up to the Bigs. Last years time with F-Mart just proves why you shouldn’t rush guys before their ready.
Look at Murphy, he showed some great promise at the plate in 2008. But his is still very young and was ruched to the majors because there was nobody else. But then, all of the sudden Murphy is the next Pete Rose? The Mets management decides to start Murphy in LF, a position he has no experience at, instead of letting him go down to AAA for a year and get more experience. I like Murphy a lot, and I bought into his hard work and hustle and natural hitting ability overcoming is lack of experience. But even though Murphy showed a lot of progress last year (especially being a rookie hitting clean up with Zero protection) he was over matched and over his head. Now he’s a disappointment and if he doesn’t hit .300 and play Mex caliber D, he’ll probably be tossed aside and never get another shot in NY (and probably become a solid player for another team).
So can we please just stop the comparison between our prospects and HOF players and let them develop properly before we throw them in the fire? All we are doing is setting up ourselves for disappointment.

Reyes might have a thyroid problem? Ladies and Gentleman, your 2010 NY Mets!
March 5th, 2010 at 3:05 pm
Ten little Metsies went to pick up the pine,
One got pinkeye and then there were nine;
Nine little Metsies stepped up to the plate,
One’s hyperthyroid and then there were eight….

Eight little Metsies with playoff aspirations,
One bruised his knee and then there was seven…

Can’t wait for the season to start! I’ll be in RF in the Mo’s Zone wit my dad, sister and friends. This off season seemed longer than most. I’m happy to have Met baseball back! Anyone else notice that the medical staff has been cautious with the team. Not letting Reyes play as soon as they get the thyroid results. Not playing the starters on a rainy muddy field. They might be smartening up!
Let’s Go Mets 2010!

I’m not feeling good. I need a few days off. Maybe a month. Okay the summer. Thyroids like me are very fragile. Baseball is very hard. Good thing my body makes millions. I like the beach.

Florida Met Fan Rich, get offa JJ. He may have a poor sense of geography but he’s forgotten more about the Mets than most of us know.
