I Fear Our GM Has Been Compromised
Does anyone else feel the pressure building under Mets? It’s gotten really bad in the past week and what’s worse is Minaya looks like he’s either scared and/or tethered to a short leash.
First Straw ripped them publicly. Then Cliff Floyd airs them out as a dysfunctional clubhouse. Both came on the heels of the JJ Putz debacle creating possibly the most embarrassing week in franchise history.
Make no mistake, this team has a rich history of embarrassing episodes, but 3 public floggings from players within a week is pretty bad. In fact I can’t recall any team across any sport enduring such a bashing from 3 unconnected past players back to back to back.
It feels like the sharks are already circling as the steam builds in the Met pressure cooker. Man, this team better get off to a good start or things are gonna get ugly beyond recognition real fast.
BMF has been accused of being too negative lately and I won’t deny that.
I love this team and root for them with my heart and soul so it infuriates me to see zero positive vibes around “my” franchise.
I stood behind Willie longer than most but finally got sick of his lame schtick and called for his head.
I supported Minaya for longer than I should have but after the Adam Rubin catastrophe I realized Omar cracks under the pressure of this gig and I don’t think the guy operates with confidence anymore.
It doesn’t look like the front office believes in him anymore. Even worse I don’t think he trusts his own instincts these days.
He’s like a batter who’s lost confidence in the box. Or a pitcher who doesn’t trust his stuff anymore. A GM has to be able to move with impunity and trust his instincts in order to succeed.
It’s obvious he’s been relieved of most public speaking duties but what kind of a signal does that send to your GM?
What does it say about ownership if they’d rather implement “Omar Rules” and keep a handicapped GM as opposed to simply eating the contract and moving forward?
Under the circumstances muzzling Minaya is the correct move but it’s a sad indicator the Mets continue to operate a backwards business.
I hate to compare us to you know who, but the Yankees would never hand media duties over to an assist GM – they would simply fire the guy who can no longer do a complete job.
So while I’m looking forward to Spring Training I’m afraid we’re not going to move out from under this dark cloud until there are major changes in the front office.

Mojo Kitty rocks the batting helmet for luck!

What did Floyd say?
February 5th, 2010 at 9:07 am
The main reason I’m not calling for Omar Minaya’s firing is that I don’t believe he’s really been in charge for a while now.
Keep him, or fire him — if the Wilpons are calling all the shots, what changes? Just the guy delivering the news at the press conferences.
February 5th, 2010 at 9:27 am
You are so right Paul. And the problem is they aren’t going anywhere.
February 5th, 2010 at 9:43 am
What happens if the Mets do well and they decide to keep operating this way?
February 5th, 2010 at 9:48 am
Thats because Omar is just Jeff’s puppet .. and soon he wil take the fall ..
after Jeff’s press conference after the season it was quite apparent to me that this team will always suffer from a clear direction b/c no GM will have the autonomy .. I would feel better if Jeff just came out and said he’s in charge ..

I’ll never accuse you of being negative recently BMF, only realistic. Santos, Murphy, Castillo, and Pagan all in the starting opening day lineup. It’s not that any one of them is totally awful but put on the field together…not good. A rehabed Santana and four rotation question marks, K-Rod and the loss of speed on the fastball…no Beltran until June. A fast start seems pretty remote.
February 5th, 2010 at 10:26 am
BMF, Yes I would say you have been negative and it is very justified. From ownership on down to Omar and the manager someone needs to step up and be held accountable….I guess the barometer will be the attendance at Shea stadium II
As a baseball fan in Florida I am just happy that they are getting ready to report in 13 days.
I am ready for the action on the field to speak for itself!….We need to get past the front office crap and lets see what we got….”YOU ARE WHAT YOUR WON-LOSS RECORD SAYS YOU ARE!”

BMF: to steal a line from Jon Stewart’s show last night: “THE BLOGS MUST BE CRAZY.” If there’s a “dark cloud” or “pressure building” it’s chiefly being fueled by a lot of hyperbolic criticism in the media and the blogs. One negative article begets another, one negative blog post leads to another: it’s a can-you-top-this, or like a “blood in the water” feeding frenzy. Add to the mix a vengeful NY press still bent on revenge for the Adam Rubin fiasco, and you get an even more vitriolic situation. Baseball is coming and the closer it gets the more ink it generates. Unfortunately, for the Mets this means a lot of over-the-top criticism of everyone from the players to the management.
As far as how this ranks on the embarrassment scale for the franchise, let’s remember that this is a franchise that once forced its center fielder to issue a public apology for being caught naked in a van with a woman who was not his wife. Marvin Miller accused the Mets of “a tasteless display of economic power” and of attempting to “publicly humiliate” a player, and he was right. Or how about the time in 1997when in the same week or so, Bobby V. called out Todd Hundley for his “sleeping habits,” causing a big public fight with his catcher and then Pete Harnisch engaged in a profanity-laced tirade against his manager in the team’s hotel lobby and then continued that tirade with a long phone call to the FAN. Or in 1993 when Saberhagen sprayed reporters with bleach, or when he and Coleman threw firecrackers at reporters in the clubhouse and in the parking lot? I could go on, but the point is that a few ex-Mets grousing/analyzing the team is hardly a big embarrassment.
I just don’t get it. If you want embarrassment, tune in Monday to the Today Show to see Steve Phillips confession to Matt Lauer. Just shoot me.

As usual I agree with what BMF says regarding Mets GM being totally compromised. I do think however that We MUST add the owners in that shakeup that this organization desperately needs. This fish stinks from the head on down and I fear The Mets will forever be a joke until the Coupons sell the team. “Jazzy Jeff” thinks he knows a thing or two about baseball and he will always be stinking his nose where it don’t belong or streight face lie to the fans about “improving the team” We sure got the ASS end of the Doubleday/Wilpon group , didn’t we? These puttz will only understand one thing…the only true messege we fans can send them to let them know to shove it….Dont bye tickets! As much as we all love the Mets this F-ing tumor has to be excised. It may not be realistic right now, but as far as Im concerned Untill the Coupons sell this team will contunue to be the laughing stock of NY and MLB in general.
February 5th, 2010 at 1:57 pm
It’s not Omar, it’s the Wilpons.
It doesn’t who is the Mets GM, they are still going to have to deal with meddling owners who will allow them to succeed and then decide that they know what’s best for the team.
I still support Omar. I still think that he is one of the best GMs in the game.
Unfortunately, it looks like he’s going to end up proving it elsewhere.
February 5th, 2010 at 2:01 pm
TDFKA Bill L. hit it.
It has become fashionable to trash the Mets.
The Putz thing pisses me off to no end.
Players usually don’t under go physicals when they are traded. If he was so hurt why the F did he voluntarily pitch in the WBC?
oh an he just went from a declined $11 mil Mets option to a $3 mil deal.
SOUR F’N GRAPES from a guy doing a CYA over questionable behavior on his own behalf so he kicks the Mets when they’re down.
If the media wasn’t in such a Mets bashing frenzy (you should the Twitter comments from some Mets beat writers who clearly aren’t objective anymore), they would have been busy questioning Putz’s irresponsible action and his idiotic comments.
Oh and Gene, the “Coupons” still spend more money on their team than every other NL team. They might be stupid, but they ain’t cheap.
Don’t even get me started on the fanbase’s attitude right now.
February 5th, 2010 at 2:14 pm
Who are you and what have you done to CoreyNYC?
February 5th, 2010 at 2:45 pm
I agree with the Dude and Corey.
Enough of this nonsense and belly-aching.
I am EXCITED to see Reyes back out there and smack triples all over Citi Field.
I am EXCITED to watch Santana continue to be one of the most fearless pitchers I have ever seen.
I am EXCITED to witness David Wright build his case as the greatest 3rd baseman in Mets history.
I am EXCITED to cheer for Bay and Frenchy.
I am EXCITED to sit right behind home plate, in the upper deck every Sunday with my wife and kids and a beer and watch the Mets play baseball.
If you allow all this bs to ruin all this for you, then you have made a huge mistake. Life is short.
PLAY BALL!
February 5th, 2010 at 3:25 pm
I agreee with EG….Lets put a postive spin on it….I am excited to…the only thing that counts is the wins….Lets Go Mets!
February 5th, 2010 at 3:36 pm
CoreyNYC, I think you often have good takes and I don’t disagree with some of what you say. But your statement that players don’t usually undergo physicals when traded is ridiculous, especially if a player has had any sort of injury issue previously.
As for the fanbase’s attitude, can you really blame people for being upset with the way last year turned out after back-to-back collapses, combined with empty promises from ownership and fiascos involving the GM and the medical staff? Should people really just put on a happy face and say everything is fine?
February 5th, 2010 at 4:30 pm
Lets face it Omar is not calling the shots. He would of signed piniero, or tried hard after lackey. Lets see. Since omar been on board, year after year he hasnt been afraid to go after big targets. Beltran/Pedro(injury damnit)krod/Bay(only move i believe he was ALLOWED to do)Santana.
Lets face it before omar this team was in shambles, all we had to look forward was for Mike Piazza to hit home runs. Yes omar has done some stupid trades, signings, but he turned the franchise around. Amnesia hits quickly when we lose. J.J is made because we declined his INSANE option. Corey pointed out a good point. WHY THE F*** DID HE PITCH IN THE WBC IF HE WAS “HURTING.” THE mets should not allow NO ONE TO GO TO THE WBC THIS YEAR. Players who got hurt after the WBC are : PUTZ/OLLIE/REYES/DELGADO/BELTRAN/PUTZ. Im not sure if santana pitched in the WBC but if he DID you can add him to the list also! We have a good team but the Office is messing with these guys head and you have the media who jumped off the Mets bandwagon which they rode for couple of years when the yankees were struggling, now they jumped back with them! F the media
February 5th, 2010 at 8:29 pm
Sorry, Omar is an idiot
February 6th, 2010 at 2:20 pm
EG,
I would love to be positive about this team, but they have not given anyone a reason to be excited. I am glad that they did not sign Molina & Piniero, whose ERA would be about three runs a game higher if you took out the games he pitches against the Mets. Reyes? Nice, but until I actually seem him run bases in a game, I will not be excited about a player that has been subjected to the Mets’ medical staff, and that includes Santana. If Santos is the everyday catcher, the team is in trouble…and if they use a combination of Santos & Thole then fine, as long as Thole is the one catching 100 games (inexperience aside). And if they are not going to sign another pitcher, I want Niese, if ready to be the fifth starter. I saw Figueroa in the Caribbean WS the other night, and he looked like what he is…a AAAA pitcher. If he is the swing guy, I can live with that. I do not believe in Nieve, but if he wants to prove me wrong, go ahead…the fact of the matter is the guy that will make or break this pitching staff, regardless of who else they bring in here (since it will not be a top of the line guy) is Pelfrey. Unless Mike gets his head out of his butt and pitches with the attitude that here it is, I dare you to hit it, the Mets will not be serious contenders.
Finally, Minaya is an idiot and needs to be fired. Sadly, it will take a total embarrassment, before the Wilpons, in their shame bring in a baseball guy (and since the Mariners, got the only one that the Mets actually seemed to have had) to actually BUILD an organization (and the Wilpons just sign the checks) we are resigned to the catch lightning in a bottle approach to having the team put together.
February 6th, 2010 at 3:17 pm
Omar an idiot…those are strong words guys. I think he’s closer to an imbecile. Not quite as smart as a moron but still a small step above idiot status. My guess is he knows enough not to wet his pants but that’s about it.
February 6th, 2010 at 7:12 pm
Willie’s lame what?? I do believe we were winning under him, don’t you remember!!
February 7th, 2010 at 12:41 am
Oh, gee whiz, guys - the season has yet to begin and the negativity is ratcheted all the wya up. Let’s just wait and see what happens. I’ve been wearing my Mets cap all winter long and I’ll never stop rooting for them. I bleed orange and blue. Hey, they may be losers, but they’re our losers.
F–K that - this is ranker than rank. They have hit bottom, dug through the earth, out the other side and fired a rocket in to deep space.
Still and all, I can’t wiat to watch them suck it up every night. It beats winter.
February 7th, 2010 at 9:06 am
Sorry JJ
Omar is an idiot
February 7th, 2010 at 9:19 am
welcome back, lip!
February 7th, 2010 at 11:43 am
The Lip,
Welcome back. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING?
February 7th, 2010 at 1:38 pm
Thats why they play the games…11 days till they report in PSL…Bsseball will be back!
March 1st I will be sitting in box seats behind the Mets Dug Out for the first game against the Braves!!!
LETS GO METS!!!!!!!!
February 7th, 2010 at 6:04 pm
I really feel that the trading power was taken from Omar because of the hole he dug for the Mets with Pertez and Castillo contracts. It was 2 bad contract years in a row. But holding back in getting a FA or trading for a pitcher or catcher will cost the Wilpons more in $$$$$S because of ticket sales will be way off…..spend the $$$ to make the $$$$
February 9th, 2010 at 4:29 am
Indeed,The bellyaching and general overall negative attitude has reached absurd proportions.
The problem is,all the pessimistic “fans” in the blog-osphere seem to parrot each others nonsense,a black hole where no one has an original criticism anymore. The same old nonsense is rehashed again and again, fed even further by so called “journalists” who seem to have a personal vendetta against the team for some odd reason. Come on really, are the “crises” you all love to complain and b*i*t*c*h about really anything to get so worked up over?
As another commenter on here so eloquently put it…Life is too short, lets play ball!

Cheap Broadband Packages : Creating Waves in the Market Today, the market is full of cheap broadband packages and the demand is constantly increasing among the users.
