Mets Reach New Low

Just when you thought last year couldn’t get any worse the friggin’ Mets manage to look like fools all over again as JJ Putz comes clean on Chicago radio.

They really gotta be kidding me with this one.

In case you missed it, Putz was NEVER given a physical when the Mets traded for him last winter.

Huh???

And if that wasn’t bad enough once the bone spurs in his elbow flared up the bumbling Mets issued a gag order instructing JJ to hide his injury from the media by lying and telling them he’s healthy.

Wha???

I’m almost at a complete loss of words on this one.

In fact I’m really having a difficult time wrapping my brain around the frighteningly high level of stupidity shown by the Mets.

First of all isn’t a player physical STANDARD PROCEDURE to complete a trade?

How on earth can a professional organization possibly forget, overlook, or simply choose not to examine a pitcher with a known history of elbow issues???

It just doesn’t make any rational sense.

I’m sorry but someone should lose their job over this one.

I don’t know enough about the inner workings of the front office to say specifically who should be shown the door but this is simply NOT ACCEPTABLE.

I’d really like to know who allowed the forgoing of the physical. You’d think responsibility ultimately lies with Minaya since he’s the GM but knowing the Mets they’ve got some cocamamie system in place that makes no sense and doesn’t work.

The thing is you would hope multiple people would speak up regarding the lack of physical such as: Minaya, any assistant GM, Jeff Wilpon, Fred Wilpon, the head of the medical dept…

And I’m DYING to know which genius was behind the decision to have Putz outright lie about his health. Was it Minaya? Or a Wilpon? I can’t imagine the inept Met PR dept would be given enough autonomy to make that decision but you never know with this backwards ass organization the Wilpons run.

Of course now that we know the Mets instruct players to lie to the media we’ll never take anything at face value.

This entire organization is a joke.

OK, forget about Omar. How do we convice the Wilpons to sell the team. Do we boycott games? Do we demonstrate in front of Shea 2.0? Signs in Shea 2.0? Flood the blogs, radio stations? Do fans have what it takes to make something like this happen? Has it been done before?
    This is ridiculous already.
Remember 20 + yrs ago when Tylenol had that big scare? What did they do? They recalled EVERY single Tylenol bottle on the shelves and replaced them. Ultimately, Tylenol gained greater respect in the public eye. We MUST clear house. Start over. Ideally owners…..but if not VP, GM’s, PR,
    EVERYTHING….

  2. Jeffrey Wilpon Says:

Please don’t ask any questions, and for GOD’S SAKE ignore all the “men” behind the Blue-and-Orange curtain.

I AM THE ALMIGHTY AND POWERFUL OWNER’S SON…..*WoOoooOoOoOoOoOooOOOOO*…….

You people are idiots to continue supporting me and my dad. Everything we do is predicated on bull$hieviks.

As long as we make it look like we’re upgrading….and as long as ticket sales keep going along - we’ll continue leading you blind sheep to the slaughterhouse.

    Simple as that.

Now excuse me, I have my morning massage session to run-off to….only I’ll have a happy ending, and none of you ever will.

    Sincerely Signed,
    Jeffy Wilbucks

  3. JoeG Says:

I, for one, love this baseball team and have since 1972-wins cure all-but the continued incompetance of this organization is inexcusable.I will not be attending any games at Citifield this year-I am even thinking of not getting MLB extra innings BECAUSE I love this team and want to see some changes in the right direction-such as Jeff Wilpon shedding the Jerry Jones mantra, the long overdue firing of Omar Minaya, the firing of Jerry Manuel-BEGGING John Schuerholz to get up here and start from scratch. The only way the Wilpons will see things the fans way is if Citifield is half empty and thats a fact!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. JJ Says:

Last year was a good start re: an empty new Shea, another couple of years like that and hopefully the Wilpon’s will be going the same route as Linda DeRoulet…

  5. Florida Met Fan Rich Says:

Spring Training can not start soon enough!!…16 days but whose counting!….Can it get any worse once we get on the field?…… Anybody got that “Fire Minaya” T-shiet yet?

I don’t care about the Putz deal. He’s gone. It’s 2010 and pitchers and cathers report in just 13 days !!!

  8. TheDoorman Says:

Maybe Madoff can run the team from his jail cell. He’s good at ripping of new yorkers.

  9. Spalding Wilpon Says:

I am a direct-descendant of The Wilpon Family - but they disowned me years ago when I questioned their business practices.

Jeff frequently slept through school, but was always there in the offices playing with his toys and flipping baseball cards - being the good son to daddy.

He was rewarded with the keys to the kingdom.

  10. obxmet Says:

If he was so “hurt” prior to going to the Mets why did HE choose to participate in the WBC? Don’t think this was handled well by the Mets @ all but I think he has some sour grapes workin’ here too.

  11. joeybrooklyn1976 Says:

Two things bother me about this. 1- trading for a player and not giving a physical. I’ve never heard of such nonsense. 2- The organization (and I use the term loosely) supposedly telling players to lie to the media and play through injuries. Not playing a little banged up, but playing through actual injuries, especially when the team was out of it by July. If you weren’t wondering by now how the “organization” (mis) handles injuries, then you should be now. Are there some sour grapes on Putz end? Maybe there are but this is too much of a pattern to ignore. Of course the “organization” will just go into defensive mode rather than actually evaluate how things are run.

We all remember Reyes being listed as day to day turning into a month to out for the season. Now we get to see an SNY video complete with 80’s movies montage music to pump us up. I just don’t see a Lane Meyer surprise victory at the end.

  12. USMF Says:

Yeah, I smell a little BS too…you’re dead on with the WBC thing…

Sure JJ, it was all the Mets fault you sucked out last year…the Mets talked you into ignoring the MRI they ran and forced you to pitch and jeopardize your career…

and how do “never really had a physical”? either you had one, or you didn’t…

The Mets knew about the bone spur, but Putz pitched well in spring and he decided to pitch in the WBC, so they assumed that he could pitch another year with the spur…

Not giving the Mets a pass on this, but something smells like BS.

  13. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

I agree with those who smell a little BS here. Putz is being a putz. Look, the Mets acquired Putz for one year only. They knew he had a bone spur, but thought he could pitch with it, as countless pitchers do. As he had done the previous year. It was a gamble; it didn’t work out; BFD. Putz is being a putz here– he said he was ready to go, he showed good velocity in the spring, everything seemed all set. He felt good enough apparently to pitch in the WBC–hardly sounds like a guy who’s hurting too much. Plus, he got six million bucks out of the deal. What more does he want? He wants to blame the Mets for his injury? The Mets say that he had a physical in Spring training and another exam plus an MRI to be cleared for the WBC. He probably feels that since the Mets basically had only a one year investment in him, that they didn’t really care about the long term health of his arm. Maybe he’s right, but that’s the way it goes. Players are plenty selfish too, when it comes to protecting their assets, and playing or not playing with an injury. If a more thorough exam had been done, who’s to say that it would have been determined from that that Putz couldn’t pitch with whatever was going on inside his elbow? Evidently the MRI didn’t reveal anything so obvious to the Mets doctors or to Putz himself. Maybe the Mets don’t deserve a pass here, but neither is this the debacle that some are making it out to be.

  14. Matt the Met Fan Says:

Sure its BS but how can they not give him a physical? the clamming up part ? thats Wilpon (or Belichick - does he manage the Mets?) not a big surprise ..

just another in a long line of upper management screw ups .. are any of us surprised here ?

The Mets say we don’t have the money to afford Torrealba ?? Like I said: does anything surprise me anymore

  15. Gene Says:

Three God Awful seasons and counting. We have now been officially dragged into the worse possible time for being a Mets “fan” since the Horrid years of M Donald Grant and the trading of Tom Seaver. This is it folks…The Black Hole that is this organization is painful to even ponder.
Sadly….very sadly I feel This fish stinks from the head on down. I dread with all my heart that until the Wilpons sell the Mets this ….this crap …this joke…. this embarrisment….this micky mouse …amateur….. sad and totally F’ed up ball club. Remember that saying:….”its the economy stupid!”…Well for us Mets fans its painfully obvious enough… “Its The Wilpons Stupid!”…..Its the F-ing Wilpons!

  16. Tim Says:

People lie about injuries all the time. People are told to lie about injuries all the time. That is normal and is no big deal. The big deal is no physical before the trade - the lie is nothing.
