Mets Win Anti-Climactic Off-Season Olympic Gold

If they gave out medals for dissapointing winters our Mets would surely be standing at the top of the podium.

Granted there’s still time for something exciting to happen but  as of now I couldn’t be less enthusiastic about the 2010 baseball season.

The weird thing is I feel Jason Bay has had almost zero impact on the Met fan’s psyche. Never mind that I like Bay and believe he’ll make an impact - it just still feels like we’re maddingly treading water all winter long.

Maybe we got spoiled by all those Pedro, Beltran, Santana winters. Maybe we shouldn’t expect major moves every offseason. Maybe J Bay should be enough to make us happy.

But after the season we just lived through, on the heels of consecutive collapses I’d think Minaya would need to/be given the budget to address multiple holes.

We can analyze and guess why this move didn’t happen or that trade wasn’t made but this apathy around this organization right now is frightening.

I mean is anyone really excited about spring training?

I’m not asking if you’re “looking forward” to spring training I want to know if any Met fans are genuinely “excited” about our chances as we approach pitchers and catchers?

I anticipate a last place finish-Slomar and the owners have brought nothing but bad karma to the Mets.

  2. Paul Says:

Sometimes it has to be enough that we’ll be able to watch baseball again.

I don’t think much of the Mets’ chances for making the playoffs, but I am excited about seeing Jose Reyes return to the field and watching Johan Santana start every fifth day.

  3. TheDoorman Says:

Come on people. Now is not the time to despair.  Did things look better at this time in ‘69?  Did we not kick ass after the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Were we not pissed when the French put a man on the moon before us? Did Custer not kick Indian butt at Little Big Horn? So come on BMFers! Buck up and rally behind the 2010 Mets. Remember, it’s alway darkest before the worst part of the storm hits.

  4. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

BMF: Excited, you want excited? didn’t you hear? The Mets signed Frank Catalanotto! Shout out to my fellow Smithtown East high school alum!! You may not be excited now, but when he comes up in a big spot and the stadium sound person turns up “Your Love” by The Outfield, you’ll hardly be able to contain yourself.
    “Josie’s on a vacation far away………….”
As far as Spring training goes, I agree with Paul: I’m just looking forward to seeing baseball.

I read an obit in the NYT yesterday for the great Jane Jarvis. She was a real fixture at Shea in the early years, and her name brings me lots of great memories of my time there growing up. May she rest in peace.

  5. Florida Met Fan Rich Says:

Yes I am excited about Spring Training…I guess it helps living in Florida!

It comes to to PPM (Pelfrey, Perez, Maine)…This trifecta will make or break us!

They are really going to have to build a team around the new ballpark and that means…pitching…defense …speed!

I also remember Jane Jarvis I saw her obit in the N.Y. Times..15 years as the Mets Organist 1964-1979.

  6. Original62Fan Says:

What happened to the old Met optimism? How can you not be looking forward to watching baseball again? I’ve said it before - if all the “IF’s” fall into place, it could be really fun.
If Reyes . . If Pelfry . . If Perez . . If Maine . . If Beltran . . If Santana . . and to go along with all these If’s, there’s still Wright, Bay, K-Rod . . . and a Castillo that batted over .300 last year. Just wait. . . it could be fun. And even if it’s not fun, it still baseball.

P.S. Sad to see that Jane Jarvis passed. Lindsey and Bob always made mention of her every game back in the old days.

  7. USMF Says:

Always excited for the new season…

As far as “Off season winners” go, you can’t put much stock in winning the off season, Will-Mar almost always comes away as winners and it doesn’t lead to division, NL or WS winners.

I’m glad they took a different approach this year. Handing out big contracts to players with age or injury concerns is what led to late season collapses and lack of depth on the roster…what’s that saying about doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?

And to clarify, not spending (wasting) money doesn’t mean they don’t have money to spend…it just means that maybe there isn’t anyone worth spending it on.

  8. Patrick Says:

Every off season that we’ve heard “buzz” about the Mets they end up missing the playoffs. Maybe this year will be different because everyone can focus on Philly, Atlanta and even Florida. Leave the Mets alone and let them come from the shadows.

I can think of a lot of cities that would rather have the Mets line up than their own so I’m not complaining.

No buzz necessary. Just start the season.

  9. Tha Franchize Says:

Why do the Mets need to create a huge buzz every off season? What entitles us to sing a big name free agent every year? We’ve done it before and what has it gotten us? Signing big name free agents doesn’t always translate into post season success. The Mets (and their fans) need to think small. Sign solid, steady players to fill gaps. Make trades to replenish the farm. Get a new crop of scouts to keep the farm adequately stocked. I think the Mets need to focus on putting out a team not a list of individual stars. Yes, signing a big name all star can boost a team, but they need to limit them. Granted it was a different time, but the 86 Mets got players via trades or from the farm, no free agents in that group. They should look around at what other “successful” teams of the past few years are doing and make an amalgam of those teams. Boston, Tampa, Minnesota, Angels, Phillies, Sr. Louis, Dodgers, Rockies. Take a cue from some of them and we’ll have a good playoff bound team in Flushing.

All that being said, I am looking for the 2010 season. I think the injuries were all a fluke, and while the Mets not be in the mix to win the world series or thrive in the playoffs, we could have a good team out there. I can honestly say the Mets have the ability to win 85-90 games this year. While its not great, but it’ll be an improvement and possibly a good foundation to build on.

    I survived the collapses of ‘07 & ‘08
I survived the DL of ‘09
    Let’s Go Mets 2010!

  10. metfan88 Says:

its frustrating enough to see the mets basically did NOTHING this offseason (Ok, J Bay, big deal!). it’s even more frustrating when i had to watch re-run of the 06 gm7 on the MLB network this past saturday nite, esp when interview beltran. the way he carried that post gm comments was just as if they’ve won that game. (he was speaking fast and show no disappointment)! We can’t change owners, but we can change GM and Omar gotta go!!! he should have been fired after the 07 or 08 season, only the stupid wilpons kept him.

  11. JJ Says:

I’m sure looking to the start of the season…it will mean winter’s over and we’re closer to getting rid of Omar and Jerry…all good things. Plus in a bizzare way it’s fum watching them when they suck.

  12. Patrick Says:

Franchize…I like your mantra. That should be on a t-shirt!

  13. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

Well, I wouldn’t say I’m “genuinely excited” about our chances, but I miss baseball something FIERCE and I’ll take what I can get. I am looking forward to taking advantage of all the cheap tix there will be on Craigslist and seeing the new HOF and Mets memorabilia at the stadium. I REALLY miss seeing Reyes play and I think this season could be fun if we stop expecting a WS and whining about everything we are entitled to as fans. That said, I think we need more pitching if this season has any chance of heating up.

I can’t wait for that first game where I put in my gear, visit my brick, go up the escalator with all the other crazies, grab a hot dog and a beer and lose my voice screaming. I’m ready!!!!

  14. Howard Says:

    Hi Fellow Mets Fans:

I said this the day the season ended and I say it again. If Daniel Murphy is in any way the starting/platoon 1st baseman for the Mets for the 2010 season, then you know that the Mets have absolutely no intent on having a winning baseball team. The only exciting thing in going to Citi Field this year is to find out how much they increased the pricing of food from last year.

Can you believe that this organization is charging us top dollar for tickets in addition to paying for the Mets cable channel and they have the nerve to have a 1st base platoon of Tatis/Murphy in addition to a starting pitching staff of a #1 in Santana, a #3 in Maine, two #5’s in Perez and Pelphrey and a #7 in Nieves.

And I dont even have the patience to talk about a relief staff that has no set up man to K-Rod in addition to other major holes there.

What an utter embarrassment. Lets face it fellow Mets fans.. We are going into spring training knowing that we have no chance of making the playoffs. Don’t delude yourself into thinking that we do.

The only way we win is if Reyes, Beltran, and everyone else is healthy, Perez pitches like a #2, Pelfrey pitches like a #3, Niese taking on a strong roll at the #5.. Oh yea, at the Red Sea parts again.

    Fugget about it.

    Howard

  16. AJW Says:

Sorry Johnny Damon, The Mets are not going to sign you and your great smile, The Mets present at least for now GM only is interested in lazy second basemen who have a face like a wart hog.

  17. Matt the Met Fan Says:

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

  18. Tim Says:

what is wrong with Mets fan??? For all their hatred of the Yankees, Mets fans want to be them and its sad. YOU CAN’T SIGN EVERYONE! We signed the second best player in free agency….yet that is not enough….give it a rest. Disappointing winter?? How much do they have to spend? How many of the top 5 free agents do they have to sign? Give me a break.

We’re not the Yankees…and we don’t want to be.
