BMF Applauds Escobar Signing
Despite what seems to be a general sentiment among Met fans BMF is here to say Kelvim Escobar is a smart signing by Minaya.
I’m actually shocked by what seems like overwhelming negative reaction to this move. I guess it’s a fanbase expressing frustration with the lack of an impact move but people gotta keep in mind small deals can be good deals too.
The truth is before Escobar got hurt he’d matured into an upper eschelon pitcher winning 18 games in ‘07. Unfortunately he’s essentially missed two full seasons with a torn labrum since then but that of course is why he’s so cheap.
But if he can return to form he could provide a gigantic boost to the Mets for a bargin basement rate. At the moment he’s supposed to be a set up man for K-Rod (Escobar once saved 38 games). His ‘plus’ fastball, curve and splitter that “really moves” could make him a deadly 8th inning guy but who knows he just might end up in the rotation.
Even if his shoulder cometely craps out he’s only costing us 1.25M which breaks out to LESS THAN 1% of our payroll.
I don’t care who the player is you simply can’t get too worked up over a guy who is eating up less than 1% of the budget.
So while I appreciate Met fans frustration Escobar isn’t the guy to take it out on and he just might be a bright spot for us this season.

Mojo Kitty rocks the batting helmet for luck!

The recovery rate from shoulder issues is not very high. That is my main reason I am against this signing. Also, the $ spent on Escobar, Dickey, and DESSENS?? could have been used for Sheets, who when healthy is an excellent pitcher. If Sheets is not healthy, he will be about as useful as these 3 anyway.

Good signing. Low risk, high reward. No downside even if it doesn’t work out. This is chance worth taking on a guy with excellent stuff who appears to be healthy and is throwing well enough in winter ball to have been offered contracts by at least four teams - Mets, Rays, Pirates and Brewers. David Altcheck actually did his surgery and recently examined him and he checks out fine.
Luis - Sheets wants 12 mil a year. I don’t see how signing low ocst options Escobar, Dickey and Dessens impacts Sheets acquisition. I’m not in favor of the Dessens signing but it is on minor league deal as is Dickey’s. Mets need depth at both the major and minor league levels, and I think both Escobar and Dickey are good moves. One has great stuff and history of success, and the other has a rare pitch in today’s game that few players in the NL have faced.
I like what Omar’s doing with the pen and is necessary. Mets fill the pen with quality low cost options but Mets fans always manage to find fault. Last I checked, Mets need improved pen and no ballplayer works for free.

Wasn’t this guy the leader of some drug Cartel?
Wasn’t the plan to focus on hitting first ?
Who’s next for this small market mentality team? Ben Shi*ts ..I mean Sheets?

I have no problem with this BUT the Mets (and the fans) are not willing to let people work up to their old form. If Escobar doesn’t pitch “lights-out” by June, the Mets (and the fans) will be calling for him to be cut. There is no patience here and that’s the problem.

If, if, if….
If my aunt had balls, she’d be my uncle.

mtmf: I thought the plan was to focus on pitching first?
c stengel: there’s another old saying: throw enough sh*t against a wall and some of it is bound to stick. I think that’s not a bad strategy. The Mets sign “ifs” like Escobar, hoping to get lucky. I don’t think it stops them from doing other moves, and if it works out it could be terrific.

Most Mets fans have become whiny and unreasonable.

I thought the plan was to get younger, healthier and more athletic. But if the big hitter and solid pitchers either suck or are looking to get too much money, then strengthen the pen and look to improve the other needs next year with a better crop of FA’s.
But I like the Escobar signing…I know everyone is saying he’ll be a setup guy, but I’d be very interested to see if he can make his way into the rotation.
I’d still like to see the Mets sign Garland and Erik Bedard…then our rotation would look like…
Santana; still a top five ace
Maine; good when healthy, does need to lower his pitchers per innings…
Perez; I think he’ll be better this year, when he’s good, he’s very good when he’s bad he’s very bad.
Pelf; I’m hoping he rebounds this year, maybe a weekly visit with the hypnotoadd will clean up his mental issues.
Garland; Solid SP, only 30 and will look better in the NL and pitching in New Shea will lower his HRs…he may not be great, but he’s almost a lock to give you 6+ innings every night and get you over 200 innings for the year.
Erik Bedard; A great lefty when healthy, should be cheaper than what Sheets is looking for.
With those six (and Escobar thrown in to the mix) you got two pitchers who should be able to “count on” and another Ace if he’s healthy and three guys who when are healthy and got their heads on right can be very good…hold a open competition in spring, if everyone is healthy, then the odd man either goes to AAA (Perez) or the Pen (Maine) and waits for a spot to open up…

Kelvim Escobar…this year’s version of Freddie Garcia

I’d prefer Freddie Garcia. Heck, I’d prefer Freddie Mercury. I bet we could get him on the cheap.

The Mets appear to be making moves just to say they did something. How long will the fans put up with the GM and manager?

I think it’s more of a Meh reaction than anything else

This was exactly what I was looking for, thanks a lot!
