Open Letter to Jeff Wilpon
Dear Jeff,
BMF is very troubled by the recent Peter Gammons report that you are in fact the “real GM of the Mets”.
I genuinely try and take all media reports with a healthy grain of salt but if Gammons is sayin’ it what are we as a fanbase supposed to think???
To be honest I can’t say that I even blame you. Hell, I’m mad passionate about GM’ing my freakin’ fantasy team so I can only imagine the temptations if my Dad owned the Mets!!
But you gotta rise above it Jeff. I implore you.
An Owner/GM is a combined position that simply cannot work. By definition GM’s need to be replaced periodically and the owner must fire them.
Regardless of team or sport eventually every GM gets the ax when the franchise needs new blood and a fresh start. It’s like spring cleaning. You may not do it often but periodically you gotta shake
things up.
If an owner is acting as GM a crucial part of the process is now unable to proceed naturally.
Show us you’re an owner who desperately wants to win and Met fans will love you forever.
But if you get the rep of an owner who thinks he knows better than the GM you may never defeat that image in this town.
There’s a long list of GM meddling owners and very few champions. Daniel Snyder, Al Davis, Jerry Jones and George Steinbrenner to name a few.
(for the record the Cowboy championships were all JJ’s doing and people forget the yankee dynasty was only allowed to develop because the Boss was suspended from baseball and unable to trade his top prospects!)
Look Jeff, I respect you for wanting to get involved in every aspect of your business. I’m sure player personnel moves are much more fun than licensing deals and revenue sharing but we’d all respect you more if you have the willpower to remain “just” an owner.
Perhaps Gammons has it wrong and it’s Fred who is driving the GM bus. BMF doesn’t care, if either or both Wilpons are GM’ing behind the scenes. I plead with you to rethink this strategy.
If you think Omar can’t handle it - fire him, eat the contract and get someone else in there. But Minaya, or any other excuse, us not a valid reason to excuse poor leadership by ownership. If Gammons is correct something has to happen because this cannot end well for you in the
long run.
Despite his ESPN Radio comments this story is still yet to fully take hold in the Met fan’s collective conscious. It’s not too late to prevent this from doing long term PR damage to ownership’s name.
Trust BMF on this one Jeff you still have time to do the right thing.

When Omar was allowed to be Omar, we did alright. We had a little success and it seemed rather easy. We have a wonderful GM in Omar and he does not need to be replaced. No one can control injuries. But notice, whatever you allowed him to address in the past, he did well. Put us on the map with Beltran and Pedro. Addressed bullpen with K-rod and Putz, once again went for a real solution, didn’t work out with Putz’ injury. Now, once again, let him do his thing. He will address the issues at hand and when he is done, if you see some holes, that would be the time to step in. Maybe throw in a couple extra million to get that last bullpen arm or bench player. This is no diss… I agree with BMF, this is just allowing Omar to do the job he was hired to do. I don’t think the guy takes a bunch of days off. He is hard working and quickly becoming one of the stronger GMs in the game. You want to be accepted by everyone? Win.
Here are my suggestions for this offseason:
Add
Halladay (We have more than enuff prospects… Pagan, Maine, Mejia, Murphy, Pelfrey, F-Mart are all currently just undervalued by NY media, not by GMs.
Sheets - Even if he starts just 24 games a year, as long as he is the #3 pitcher, we can live with that. Best number three of any playoff team last year, when healthy.
Delgado and Mike Jacobs - we paid 12 million last year for 1st and this year, we can probably get our starter and our backup for less than that. Especially if Murphy is traded for Halladay. Jacobs did a nice job here at a very young age and he can definitely hit it out of CitiField. If Delgado goes down, he is a true powerbat fill in. Fan friendly and makes sense.
Take on Wells’ contract if absolutely necessary as long as the Jays pay a significant portion of it. They will do it. Even if they pay 6 million a year towards his contract, Toronto clears over 25 million of salary in this one transaction.
If we don’t have to take on Wells, I suggest trying to sign Vlad to a one or two year contract. He can hit it out of CitiField.
Pudge Rodriguez got paid 1.5 Million last year, we paid Schneider 5 millioin. Let’s pick him up and team him wit Santos, the kid will learn a ton and we get a great 7 or 8 hitter and a guy that can call a great game.
The stadium is big. These guys can actually hit it out. Sprinkling new power throughout the lineup will help it a lot.
Reyes
Beltran
Wright
Vlad or Wells
Delgado or Jacobs
Franceur
Pudge or Santos
Castillo
When Murphy comes up and you need a homerun, it is one thing. When Vlad comes up and you need a home run, it is a different feeling. I am sure the pitchers feel it too.
Rotation
Santana
Halladay
Sheets
Maine/Pelfrey - whomever is not traded for Halladay
Perez
This is the type of starpower we are going to need to compete regularly. It is obvious regardless of what they say, Toronto will deal him to NL East before Yankees and Sox. It would suck for them to face this guy upto 5 times a year. Don’t forget that Pat Gillick is now with the Phillies. We do not need to see that reunion.

Try this:
Jeff, you’re not qualified. Stay out of it. Hire a real GM.

unlike others i feel Omar is not as terrible we will always shake our heads on Gms moves Not ever move Cashman made for the Yankees were good. But with that said when Jeff butts in too much the Gms can’t do well. when he was working on building Citifield day to day we won in 2006 the division. the problem is more the owner then the GM . But the manager is not without fault. Omar has blame but not as much as he has.

I really love that second photo I took. It’s just so unintentionally hilarious.

sadly i think Gammons is correct in his accusation and we’re all gonna have to live with it until Jeffy figures out this isnt the way to run a team

It doesn’t surprise me at all to imagine the owners son Jeff Wilpon thinks he can play GM
typical of this backwards franchise
