Bravo New Uni’s!
BMF stands and applaudes the NY Mets for bringing back the old skool cream jersey with pinstripes.
I think it’s a brilliant move by the organization.
First the Mets deliver a healthy dose of tradition to a restless fan base… Shortly thereafter we’re all shelling out cash for new jerseys. Its a win-win-win.
I love these vintage Met threads and I can’t wait to sport one. I’d the think the next step is to roll out the retro road jerseys. Y’know those gray flannels - they were the coolest.
I’m being a super dorky Met fan but I’m dying to know who was behind the retro jersey move. I wonder if it was simply a marketing decision or was it maybe a Wilpon brainchild???
Hmmmmmm…..

Does anybody like the black Mets caps and Jerseys???? I just can’t adjust to it.
November 20th, 2009 at 8:46 am
Maybe it’s the fact that many other teams in baseball (Phils, Twins, Blue Jays, Brewers, Indians, etc) have already thought of the idea first.

Does this mean the black is done? God, I hope so-I am so sick of the alternate home and road jersey-see the 1973 uniforms and STICK WITH THEM ,YOU MORONS!!!!!!!!!!

What a surprise..anyone see this NYTimes article that showed how the Mets spent the fewest amount of money on their draft picks last year than anybody else .. in fact not signing their 5th and 6th picks? both hard throwing pitchers (why would we want them right?)
Instills a lot of confidence right? at least we have the 7th overall pick this year b/c we sucked so bad last year .. oh well …

MTMF: that article is very revealing of one of the Mets problems. And look at the last line: does Minaya mean that he’d rather be picking late, because it would mean that the Mets had done well, or does he mean that he’d rather find a cheap “diamond in the rough” kind of kid, than one they might have to shell out the big bucks for?
About the Jerseys: I love the pinstriped jersey. It’s the only real home jersey and all the others white and black are marketing devices. I heard somewhere that the club was thinking about using the stirrup socks with them as well. How cool would that be. However, as usual, I have one complaint. I’m 51 years old, so have been a Mets fan since the very early days, and I just don’t recall the Mets ever really having a jersey this color before. I’ve looked through all my yearbooks and posters and photos from that era and I just don’t see anything quite like it. Of course, it could be my memory failing, or it could be as Calvin’s father once told him in a “Calvin and Hobbes” strip that the reason that old photographs look the way they do is because “the World was black and white then” and that when it turned color “it was a pretty grainy color for a while,” but I suspect that the reason the new uniforms are as yellow as they appear is to give them a false aged look, kind of like the look you’d get if you took your old jersey out of the closet after 40 years. That’s how I felt about that jersey they had Seaver wear for the closing of Shea and the opening of Citi Field. It was custard color, for goodness sakes. I know the home uniform of the 69 club wasn’t exactly White, but I don’t think it was that color either.

And my point is that by making it that color, it makes it into this faux vintage thing, so they can market it as a must have “retro” jersey. So, I think the color is somewhat doctored to make it different enough from your other jerseys to make you want to own it.

I don’t get the “vintage cream color” jersey part of the discussion. I watched the Mets from ‘62 - ‘69 and the pinstripe uniforms were white. The first I ever saw of a cream colored jersey was when they had the oldtimers wear them during the closing ceremonies of Shea.
November 20th, 2009 at 10:54 am
They have as many uniforms as the A’s and Pirates in the 70’s…maybe they can match up the black shirts with the cream pants and look like a Black Russian…
November 20th, 2009 at 11:50 am
can’t wait to see Wright and Reyes rock these jerseys!
November 20th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
Yeah! New Jerseys alright! That’s great! Whew, and I didn’t thinkt he Mutz were going to do anything this offseason. Man, we’re all set now! That’ll fix this team, it was all the jerseys…
November 20th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
Paul Lukas at uniwatchblog says these new “retro” jerseys are still going to have the black drop-shadow on the text and numbers.
Typical Mets.
November 20th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
The “vintage cream” color on all of these throwbacks is due to the way flannel ages. So it’s supposed to mimic looking like a white flannel set that the team’s had forever.
November 20th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
The black jerseys are the best jerseys ever
I love those
November 20th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
these are disgusting
another horrible move by the mets
November 20th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
i’m not a drop shadow hater generally but drop shadows on this jersey would ruin it
November 20th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
Nota bene: The jersey pictured is a Mitchell & Ness ‘69 throwback, not, I presume, the new Mets jersey, of which I am totally in favor.

I don’t give a s**t if they play in helicopter beanies and candy cane striped pants as long as they are all playing healthy again!! It’s not the unies folks! That being said the only thing worse than those black hats were the red ones they wore in Philly!
November 20th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
+1 for helicopter beanies and candy cane striped pants
November 20th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Halladay Schmalladay you know Omar’s big acquisition will probably be Miguel Olivo.
November 20th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Had me with cracking up with that helicopter beanies and candy cane stripped pants joke. You just came out of no where that comment.
November 21st, 2009 at 11:41 pm
SShhh
The ‘helicopter beanis’ are the marketing tool!
They’ll sell like hotcakes…just wait and see!!!!!
