Yanks Move on Halladay
Word is the Evil Empire has already approached the Jays about Halladay and they’re willing to jettison their best prospects to get him. Of course that would likely mean a new 100+M contract as well, but that’s no biggie for the yankees, a franchise who hands out 100M deals like candy.
So if that’s the case I think it’s prudent for the Mets to step aside and let it happen.
I’m all for bluffing the yankee price up but I just don’t see Halladay landing in Queens.
Yes, he’s an inning eating Beast. Yes, he’s probably the best pitcher in baseball. But it just doesn’t feel right to commit that much money to someone who’s logged that many innings. Maybe he is a guy who can dominate till he’s 40 but that assumption is an even bigger risk now that guys are supposedly off the steroids.
I’m sure we’ve got a long way to go before anything happens but Halladay just smells like he’s gonna be a yankee to me.
I’m just sayin’ …

Mojo Kitty rocks the batting helmet for luck!

I’d rather have Lackey.

I’d rather have a young Seaver, Koosman, Ryan, or Gooden, Darling, Fernandez. Point being until this team focuses on building some talent from within, conversations about free agent acquisitions are useless. This is what got them into this mess in the first place.

We have talent form within. Remember Wright and Reyes.

I used to dole out the haterade as soon as the Skanks started doing something like this. While we were busy ‘hatin on them, the yankees rebuilt their whole team right before our eyes while the Mets were busy choking, allowing the Phillies to become the best team in the NL, and then morphing into a doormat. If the Mets want to be pussies and not get into the game for these players, don’t be mad when this time next year, we will have had to endure yet another Yankee march down the canyon of heroes. The Mets are a big market team with small market balls, the worst combination.

Sign Lackey .. so what if we overpay him ..
then look into a guy like Marlon Byrd .. young hitter .. maybe Molina too ..
sorry but adding payroll is the only way to fix this mess .. if we don’t MJ is absoultely right: a big market team with small market balls ..

Chicho - two guys is not enough, not if you you want some level of consistant winning and post season play (see Phillies, Dodgers, Red Sox, Yankees, they all have a pretty decent core built from within);
Matt - the Mets simply adding payroll has had very little success in the past (see the Bonilla, Coleman, Vaughn, Alomar eras). I don’t see it working now. I don’t like it anymore than you guys but going on a spending frenzy will not fix the issues that plague this franchise…too many holes.
November 19th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
then how do you fill them ? they don’t have the trade pieces ..
How can you go into next year with the same players and expect a different result ?
November 19th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
What about Pelfery and Murphy. You also have players like Franocuer and Maine who didn’t come up with the Mets but are young, cheap and talented.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
Murphy? He stinks. If he’s the jewel of the farm system the Mets are in worse shape than I thought.
Tend to agree with BMF that if the Yankees really want Halladay there is no point in trying to outbid them. It’s probably an impossible task anyway (the Yanks learned their lesson on Beltran) but even if they pulled it off it would be so much money they wouldn’t be able to go after anyone else. Because whether you like it or not we know that there is a spending limit and they can’t blow all the money on one guy.

I wasn’t saying he is the jewel of the farm system I was saying he is a decent player.

Matt - as usual your post makes very good and accurate points (specifically they not have the trade pieces) and asks good questions. My feeling is one or two FA acquisitions will not fill all the holes so why bother with overpriced talent potentially on the downside of their careers (Mets history with free agents). And I agree that we can’t expect a better result next year without different players but again I don’t see how one or two FA acquisitions will make things much better (i.e. at least the post season) and only put the inevitible rebuilding off a few more years. Maybe I’ve prematurely written off the next few years, we’ll find out soon enough.

I think I just fell in love with MJ…

… and let the best nine guys take the field!
November 19th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
Irish Mike is right .. Murphy ? OMG !! what is the love affair with that guy?
BTW, Francouer (Coops BF) and Maine (last years Coops BF) are ARB eligible ..
JJ - and all - how do we improve next year ?.. I hate saying this .. but the Yankees did not make the playoffs the year before …. we know what happened .. no need to expound there ..
money .. not a cure all .. but if spent wisely .. and lets face it that is Omar’s job - can improve your team fast .. yes nobody wants overpriced aging players .. but how do we improve?
Anybody even mention our new Bench coach .. such a weak choice .. Manuel is safe for another year ..
November 19th, 2009 at 7:06 pm
Matt I found the fatal flaw in your strategy - Omar spends money like I drink beer. Unwisely, in great quantity, and with very little to show for it once it’s been spent. In fact massive beer drinking by Mets fans could be the answer…the team may not improve but we’ll all be too drunk or hungover to notice…keep the faith!!!

I totally understand being gun shy as a Met fan when it comes to free agents. And where buying players and having a high payroll doesnt mean you will win it all, its supposed to put you in the mix at least. The problem the mets have had over the past few seasons is a) they have spent on the wrong people, just spending to spend and saying you have a high payroll is not good enough, and b) when they did get something going, signing Beltran, Pedro trading for Delgado, they were so close in 2006, instead of building on it, they stayed with basically the same team and made no major moves. Meanwhile last year the Phils win the whole thing add Cliff Lee and Ibanez the following year, ok the yanks beat them but they were there again. Thats how you stay consistently good. Point being they never take that next step to go all the way, its like they get scared or something, someone earlier said big market team with small market balls, 100% agree.
Yes building within is an important way for an organization to go, you still have to add pieces to that too, not all good teams have only home grown talent, sure its good to have a decent core but its the not the only thing, and they need a quick fix this season a lot of the fans wont stand for another bad year. Signing 2-3 people this season will indeed make the team better, than staying the same. Im not sure how anyone can think otherwise, especially if its lets say a pipe dream, Lackey and Holiday, how will that not impact the team? now I know thats not gonna happen but if you spend money and the right money it will totally fix a lot of the problems. Our minor leagues will not be fixed until the mets change their approach to the draft. They dont spend enough money on the draft, and dont want to pay players who would earn a lot of money therfore taking lower slotted players, in higher slots so they dont have to pay as much, which means the better players go to teams that are willing to pay ie red sox, yankees, etc…they have good talent in the minors not only cause they have good scouting they draft above slot and pay for good players, something I wish the mets would learn. Thats the real way to throw money around and thats how you get a good system
