What’s the Over/Under on Backman to the Bigs Rumors?

Now that Wally Backman has been granted his long awaited second chance BMF has to wonder how long it will take for the Backman to Queens drums to start beating.

.Under normal circumstances a minor league skipper managing in short season A ball has a long journey before making the Bigs. Backman though, has already proved his chops by working his way up AZ’s system.

You’ll recall the D-Backs even handed him the keys to the big club for about four days until they caved to pressure when an old domestic incident between Wally and his wife came to light.

Of course if Manuel has the Mets playing .600 ball we won’t hear much about Backman as there won’t be a need for change.. But somehow I find it hard to envision the Mets playing .600 ball.

So if Jerry is scuffling around .500 I wouldn’t be shocked for the Backman chatter to kick start by mid-summer (keep in mind the Brooklyn season doesn’t even start until late June).

I suppose if things start out really bad we might hear his name mentioned in May or early June but if the Mets go down with injuries again the Wilpons may be resistant to change.

I’m gonna take a stab and set the BMF Backman over/under at fourth of July weekend…

As you say, the Brooklyn season doesn’t even start until late June. I think that probably leaves Wally out of the mix for this season. This is a rehab gig for Backman: at minimum, I think, he would have to put in a summer with the Cyclones without incident before the Mets would even consider moving him into the big league chair.

  4. USMF Says:

I’m with Bill on this one…

I like Wally, I think he could be a very good manager at the MLB level. But he has to prove that he can handle the pressure of being part of a major league organization (yes I mean the Mets) before I’d move him up.

I honestly believe that the Mets system will be much better off with Wally in the lower ranks of the system (I’d prefer AA) and work on properly molding these young players into hard working and fundamentally sound baseball players.

I think it would be far to say that there is a lot of room for improvement on the development side of our farm system and I believe that is something Wally could excel at.

  5. Patrick Says:

Ha ha!! JJ is right! BMF started it in November!

  6. Sanchez Says:

Doesn’t really mater what the team thinks if the Mets suck again and fans start turning on Jerry, Wally will be mentioned right after Bobby V as a the guy who should get the job

  7. Matt the Met Fan Says:

50/50 he manages next year .. but i am awaiting in baited breath about who the bench coach is ?
thats who will be the new Met manger .

  8. CowCrusher Says:

The upside to this is that I will be able to at least get an autograph from Wally when the Cyclones visit the Auburn Doubledays next summer. I.’m sure a number CNY Mets fans will be there as well.

  9. joeybrooklyn1976 Says:

I definitely don’t think it will be this year for most of the reasons mentioned. That doesn’t mean it won’t be put out there if the Mets struggle.

  10. Mets Fan in Israel Says:

Well - the NY Post waiting…

  11. Jim Says:

Wally should be the manager now, plain and simple. The fans love him, he is a good baseball man, he knows how to win, and he will not take any crap from these underachievers. You think he will put up with Beltran lollygagging to first on ground balls? Or any of the other 42,856 mental errors the Mets make? No, he won’t. Waaaallllly!Waaaallllly!Waaaallllly!Waaaallllly!

This town needs an enema! Wally Backman is the right man to bend them over and administer it.

Rise up Met fans, Rise up and say “ENOUGH!”, say I am tired of winning the World Series in January, I am tired of everything being done the wrong way! Throw open your windows and say “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!!!!!”

Rage, rage against the dying of the light!!!!

Wally, save us from 5 more years of bad Mets baseball, WE’VE HAD ENOUGH!
