The Riddle of Luis Castillo
In BMF’s estimation it’s kind of bizarre how second base has become a situation of such paramount importance for the Mets.
Almost every Met fan around sez, “we have to get rid of Castillo”, and 90% of ‘em want Orlando Hudson to slide right in.
For the record BMF is 1000% behind any plan that replaces Castillo with Hudson - I just dont think it should he as high of a priority as it is. Hell I’d much rather dump that bum Oliver Perez.
The truth is Castillo was the LEAST of the Mets problems last year. He was named 2009 Team MVP on brooklynmetfan.com for being the most consistant, durable and productive offensive player. He was a great comeback story too, pleading to come back before delivering in spades on a self avowed bounce back season… except for that Yankee game of course.
But that’s the root of the problem right there.
I think the Shea Faithful could’ve warmed to him if it weren’t for the dropped popup. That moment, which some identify as the point of no return for ‘09, is something that he’ll never get out from under. I realize he’s also a symbol of Omar’s flagrant spending but that’s sort of overblown as well. He’s only owed 12M for 2 years. It’s not cheap but 6M for a solid defensive second sacker is reasonable. Keep in mind Hudson made almost 4M last year on what was considered a cheap deal.
Meanwhile if you compare stats there is no clear cut favorite:
Luis - 580 PA, .302 avg, 20 SB, 77 Runs, 1 HR, 40 RBI, .734 OPS
Hudson - 630 PA, .283 avg, 8 SB, 74 Runs, 9 HR 62 RBI, .774 OPS
Let me reiterate, BMF is a big Orlando Hudson fan. O-Dog has been my fantasy second baseman more than once so I’ve followed him daily and he rocks - it’s just that people need to understand Hudson is not exactly Ryne Sandberg.
Not to mention O-Dog has a propensity to get hurt and miss the stretch run…
Look, I hope Orlando comes to Shea but we’ve definitely got bigger problems to focus on than second base… Like LF, catcher, a #2 starter….

Emma takes her Mets VERY seriously!

It is funny though, isn’t it? Castillo had a better year in ‘09 than Hudson . . AND Castillo had only AAA players in the lineup around him (except for DWright).
For once, BMF, I agree with you. 2nd base is the least of our problems for 2010.

Agreed, I’m no Castillo fan, but I don’t hate him either…(I do understand the reasons why others do)
His bat is fine, a good number two guy because he takes a ton of pitches and is a very good bunter and still has good speed. but the lack of power gets exposed when there are no available consistent run producers behind him…what good is a table setter when nobody is gonna feast?
His glove is my major concern, I think is range and his aggressiveness is in decline and is below what we need up the middle.
My problem is, how can anyone really believe that Hudson is the answer? He’s only one year younger and has a bigger injury history than Castillo. Hudson is a streaky hitter who slumped in September and got benched for Ronnie Belliard!
I’d think I’d rather have Figgens over Hudson at this point.
We need pitching, pitching and more pitching.. and a catcher and a OF’er too…but don’t trade away Castillo just to make another whole to fill…

My problem with Luis is that he is on the decline and he is the face of the Omar Minaya Los Mets era and his inability to put money where it should be(see El Duque/Perez etc)-I would probably prefer Hudson-but at this point pitching and power from LF and 1B remain the bigger issues. Address the pitching /catching LF issues and I could live w/Luis for one more season.

What about defense .. ?? think Hudson can catch a pop up? get to balls Castillo used to get in 1999?

I agree with this post 100% BMF. Not a priority.
I’ve heard you mention fantasy team several times. How about a fantasy league with BMF regulars like The Coop and JJ and USMF and BlondiesJake. And little old me??

Patrick, that sounds like a splendid idea. I could only imagine all of us in a fantasy baseball forum. Eagads.

I just called the Mets Customer Relations line: (718) 565-4360
I told them that I read in the paper that David Howard said that the Mets haven’t heard any outrage over the ticket prices, and that I was calling to lodge my outrage.
I’m a season ticket holder with four seats in the Promenade Infield Reserved, and I’m outraged by this invoice with nearly no drop in price at all. I feel like I was lied to and misled, and as a customer I’m fed up with the constant misrepresentations and lies by the Mets. Lying and deceiving is not a way to treat a customer. I don’t expect to renew my subscription.
She said OK, thanks for calling. And we hung up.

PITCHING!! I want pitching. 2nd base can wait.

Patrick, assuming it was very basic and a weekly type of deal, I’d play. I just can’t handle a second daily fantasy baseball league.
REFUSING TO TALK METS UNTIL THEY SIGN A LEGITIMATE PITCHER AND OUTFIELDER.

Luis is the least of our issues. Everyone is worried about the offense, which needs help I understand, but pitching is a serious problem.

Open Letter to Mets Fans from Team Managment:
Dear Whiny Mets Fans I am writing to you to implore you to stop following your team. The Phillies and Yankees are both opening up seats on their bandwagons. These bandwagons should be adding on additional seating for the next 2-3 years, at which piont you are free to disembark and once again cheer for the Mets. Hopefully, we’ll have a winner on the field by that point in time. In addition, there are limited time seats available on the Red Sox, but please note, the seats already taken are filled with mostly a$$ho!es.

That’s the great thing about Mets fans-you know that there are only true Met fans on these sites-the seats on the bandwagon may be open-but rather death before Yankee/Phillie or Red Sox fan.

I agree BMF. Not a priority at all. I’m with FGMF, pitching first and foremost.
