Careful What You Ask For Met Fans

Now that the yankees are on the verge of winning the WS I wonder how many Met fans will live to regret rooting for the Evil Empire.

I suppose I can understand, to a certain degree, how a Met fan can get caught up in hating Philly. But if you’re a Met fan living in the Tri-State area get ready for a year’s worth of agony. Because we’re all in store for another year of:

.• Obnoxious bandwagon yankee fans taunting our hapless Mets

• Never ending media hype and regaling us all with never ending stories about Yankee Tradition and blah, blah, blah…

• Non-stop Yankee promos. Mark my words soon we won’t be able to turn around without bumping into a Yankees world champions give away.  The Post and Daily News with their lame pull out posters, SI and their gigantic media buy for their Hardcover Yankee issue commercials,
fast food joints will have collectible cups …..

• Mike Francessa
Ugh I get depressed just thinking about it….

WS Thoughts:

Brad Lidge turned back into the same bum that torpedoed my fantasy team this season.

Johnny Damon’s barely stay alive foul tip before he singled to start the 9th inning rally reminded me of Mookie Wilson’s famous AB in ‘86.

If you recall Mookie had a similar “stay alive swing” before he dribbled one thru Buckner’s legs.

So much for a Winfield Series from A-Rod. He still only has 2 hits but they both counted big time - oh well…

  1. LongTimeFan Says:

The simple response, BMF, is - grow some ba_lls.

We share a city with the Yankees, not a division. The Yankees would never do what the Phillies did to us - the arrogance they displayed toward us during and after their own celebration. Cole Hamels is eating crow now….so too Jimmy Rollins and that’s very fine with me.

Let the Yankees finish them off and then we go into the offseason seeing that the Phils can be defeated and so too the obnoxious players amongst them - as well as their fans….the ugliest in all of baseball. Most importantly, the Phils know they can be defeated and have bullseye on their backs.

I’m older than you, BMF, and as a local, native to the City, have lived through whatever the city, media and Yankee fans have dished to the Mets over the decades. I don’t find it that difficult to admit the Yankees are proving to be the best team in baseball. After a lifetime of rooting against, them, I’m surprisingly happy for them. They’re a classy team unlike our division foes. One more win to go. Remember, they’re not our obstacle to the playoffs and W.S. - the Philthy Phils are.

So some Yankees fans, media, etc, will spew their usual. Big deal. It will sting some, but you’ll get over it as will I and many others. It’s old news, some of it true and some hyperbole. The nasty ones rub it in because they’re dysfunctional and need to self-empower via extrinsic means. That’s weakness - not strength. So when they pounce, keep that in mind, do your grieving, tip your cap to the Yankees should they win once more in 2009, and move on to the Hot Stove and the promise of brand new season in 2010.

  2. John in Athens Says:

I was rooting for the away team to depress the “live audience”, but after seeing the ugliness of the Phillie fans whenever Posada went out to the mound to talk to Sabathia I decided just to flat out cheer against the Phillies.

And by ugliness, I’m referring to that macho, finger pointing, full body shouting that was rampant every time the cameras zoomed out to show that the home crowd wasn’t happy.

Ugly faces. Hostility… reminds me of that Philadelphia parking show… and how I LOVE to see a Philadelphian angry!!!

As for you, BMF: you can’t root for the Yankees but Johnny Damon reminds you of Mookie Wilson? …Come on!!!

  3. 86mets Says:

I totally agree with the previous posts. At least with the Yankees, it’s just a few of the fans who are obnoxious. With the Phillies, it’s the fans AND the players who are obnoxious and immature. So if the Yankees win it all, I say GREAT!!!

  4. CTMetsFan Says:

Grow up BMF. Our hapless Metropolitans deserve to be taunted. Good for the Yankees. They went out and got the players they needed to win. We settle. We compromise. WE ALWAYS DO. Sounds like your more interested in the “charm” of rooting for a loser. Enough is enough.

  5. Shamik Says:

Mets fans are constantly harping against the yankees for their payroll and how they always seem to “buy” players. Its true, they do. But so does the team with the 2nd highest payroll (METS), only they suck at it. The yanks and phillies developed their own players and brought in the big guns to supplement them, not the other way around as our team does. I’m willing to take a few years in the wilderness if it means better management taking the time to develop if good young team that can go on an extended run a-la the late 90s yanks or current phils.

  6. JJ Says:

I’m for whatever gets this over with as soon as possible…Yankees…Phillies…don’t care, just end this miserable season and move on…

  7. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

Reading the posts this morning you’d think I’d have stumbled onto Brooklyn Yankee Fan.com. I’m with BMF on this– ithe Yankees are always the enemy and it’s going to suck having the Yankees as World Champs. The Phillies are our rivals for the division each season, and they have been great rivals for the past three years, so we “hate” them. But in the world series, they are not our rivals, but rather our representatives, not just of the National League, but of our own division of that league. So, I’ve been rooting for the Phillies to stomp the Yanks, and I’ll continue to do so, even knowing that it’s probably not going to happen.

  8. IrishMike Says:

I’ve gotten over my surprise at how divergent the opinions are on who Met fans “should” root for but I’m still surprised at the hostility shown by those who think their position is the only position allowed. I’m rooting for the Phils for previously explained reasons and because it’s where my heart goes when I watch. It is what it is. Neither position is much fun and neither is the only one for a “true” Met fan to take.

As for the Phillies fans being so much worse than the Yankees fans I’m not sure I buy that but if it is true perhaps it’s because the Phillies price tickets that allow actual, middle class fans the chance to go to games ans sit in decent seats as opposed to the Earl Grey tea sipping non-fan millionaires sitting in the prime seats at Yankee Stadium who can at best muster up a polite golf clap that is muted even further by their leather mittens.

Finally, since it was brought up - these trips to the mound by the catchers, Posada to Sabathia every other pitch last night, Molina to Burnett every other pitch last week - are getting ridiculous. Fortunately I have a solution. A catcher trip to the mound counts as half a visit. Just like now when the total number of trips (bench trips still count as one obviously) to the mound adds up to two you have to change pitchers. Enough already.

  9. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

shamik: compare the payroll of the two teams now, and over the timespan of this championship stretch, and you’ll see there is little comparison in expenditures. It is true that many of the Yanks are “homegrown”, but it’s also true that these players became free agents long ago, and the Yankees have been able to re-sign all of them, which is something that most teams in baseball find it impossible to do. Also, to say that players like Sabathia, Teixiera, Burnett and A-Rod are supplemental to the Yankees is stretching the definition of supplemental a bit, dont you think? What other team can invest 700 million in four players? Really, there is no other team that can do it and continue to do it. Only the Yankees. Which is a big reason why they are going for their fifth championship around this same core.

  10. IndyMetHater Says:

Representing the division? Bull! As a Yankee fan, If the red sox were playing Iran, I’d be rooting for the Persians. Regarding possible post WS Yankee hype, just insert Mets for Yankees & there would be no difference. Grow up BMF and enjoy the demise of your hated, mocking, disrespectful division rivals.

  11. The Coop Says:

Are you kidding me? This series has been great for Mets fans. Derek Jeter, contrary to popular is not God nor is he winning the World Series by himself. Cole Hamels is exposed to be the crybaby and fraud we know him to be. Jimmy Rollins is shutting up, finally. CC Sabathia got lit up, momentarily giving Yankees fans something to worry about. And if the Yankees win tonight, the WS is not only as painless and quick as possible, although I hate both teams, I do get some kind of satisfaction of having them celebrate on the Phils lawn. Plus not to mention 2009 will be over. Come on Mets fans - were you expecting ANYTHING else for this season from hell? Do yourselves as favor and don’t watch tonight.

  12. Buck Says:

Well stated LongtimeFan……..I couldn’t agree more.

  13. Paulie from Brooklyn Says:

Na na na na, na na na na, hey, hey, hey good bye!
Na na na na, na na na na, hey, hey, hey good bye!

Long Time had it right. No Yankee would have ever said anything about the Mets like Cole Hamels did.

Oh, and when you wonder why Cole and Brad have become mortal this year, just take a look at their former teammate- JC Romero. He was suspended for 50 games this year for doing what? I have a hunch he wasn’t the only Philthy pitcher juicing up.

  14. Skatch Says:

As a lifelong Met fan I would love nothing more that to watch the Yankees celebrate a world series win at Citizen’s Bank Park and see the disapointmented look on the fans and players who have disrespect and trashed us. I HATE the Phillies!

    GO NEW YORK!!!

  15. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

I don’t think there is a right or wrong way to root, let’s face it, it is depressing either way—all I know is every time I see the Phillies out there I want to pound them into oblivion—and if the Yankees are the weapon of the moment so be it.

The next time we face Philly, I want them to be HUMBLED. Nervous. And a whole lot less cocky. Humiliated would be ideal, really.

PS: Anyone who thinks that Philly winning this will make Yankee fans less arrogant, smug and annoying is living in a dreamworld.

  16. joeybrooklyn1976 Says:

I think I don’t care anymore. I’m rooting very passively for the Phils but I must admit I wasn’t at all upset to see Cole Hamels get his comeuppance. He’s a punk. After the game on Saturday he said he can’t wait for the season to be over. Really? You’re in the world series, don’t ya wanna win?

I’m not looking forward to being on the train going downtown to work with a train full of yankee fans on parade day. Or having to see world championship t shirts everywhere. Or having to hear it from Yankee fans all off season. I can’t stand the Yankees and I have to live with their fans. But I’m used to it, I’ll survive.

Either way it’s thankfully over this week. Fire up the hot stove, maybe we’ll get our hopes up only to be disappointed. I already heard from Heyman or some other “insider” that LAckey is not on the Mets radar and they are leaning heavily towards trying to sign Randy Wolf. That would be all well and good, if anyone on the staff last year proved they could be a solid number 2.

  17. joeybrooklyn1976 Says:

BMF - your timestamps haven’t adjusted for daylight savings. Can you have them say March 1st 2010, speed time up, get us past this week, get us to spring training?

  18. BlondiesJake Says:

BMF, I love you, but please stop whining about this World Series. It’s embarrassing already.

IrishMike, I drink decaf Earl Grey and own leather gloves. Am I allowed at Mets games?

tdfkabl, the Mets have the resources, just like all owners have the resources, they just don’t use them. I agree with plenty of what you say but please stop with the economic disparity argument. Yes, the yankees generate more revenue than all the other clubs, but all the owners are billionaires and there is no salary cap. Do they want to make a profit or try and win a title?

joeybrooklyn1976, did you say Randy Wolf instead of John Lackey? Oh, goodie, once again the Mets will try to win a WS on the cheap. It’s worked out so well before, I’m sure it will again.

At least I’m getting my wishes for bad weather and Cole Hamels to suck.

  19. joeybrooklyn1976 Says:

Bjake - That’s what I said. Who know if it’s true. It was just a talking head on SNY. Figure I’d start the hot stove early. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit.

  20. Castillo643 Says:

Growinging up in NYC, I’m pretty much immune to Yankee fans and thier obnoxiousness (close friends and family included).

I’d rather deal with the few weeks of NYY fan obnoxiousness, than hear a season of Joe Buck shrilling about an impending Phillies dynasty.
Plus the Phillies window is closing - they will have to pay Werth and Lee after next year, and the “core” everyday players are at the peak of thier career. Ouside of Victorino, they are all at 30 or on the wrong side of it.

While the mets need to rework, I can deal with the Phillies doing the Atlanta Brave, win a weak division, and fall short routine.

  21. WestyMetfan Says:

Dislike for the Phillies and their other teams there runs deep and has for a long time. Dislike for the Yanks is only recent, but as a Met fan i am numb to it. The philly arrogance is brand new and misplaced and nothing annoys mee more than a new bandwagon. I don’t want a new one to have to deal with! I have never seen more than a smattering of Philly fans at Met games and suddenly there are 10,000 fans there? give me a huge break philly phrauds. I will cast my lot with NYer’s any day of the week over most cities, but especially fans from Philly. Yuck!

  22. USMF Says:

All this in fighting and name calling by Met fans over “who they should be cheering for’ is one of the stupidest things I’ve seen from the fan base in a long time…who cares who anyone cheers for? There is no moral victory to be had…no matter who wins, it sucks for us. This is a NO WIN.

Also, you can’t seriously compare Mets (or anyone else) to the Spanks. The Spanks out spent the Mets by 60mil!

And, if the Mets are poor at investing their money…so are the Cubs and Tigers whose payrolls are very close to the Mets… The Phils have the 5th highest payroll (only 12mil less than the Mets)…Now they are getting bang for their buck…but with the amount of young players who are gonna hit FA soon…their payroll is gonna blow up…

  23. Sanchez Says:

    Westy said:
“Dislike for the Phillies and their other teams there runs deep and has for a long time. Dislike for the Yanks is only recent,”

WTF are u talking about? We’ve only hated the phillies for 3 years while REAL MET FANS have always hated the yankees

I dont understand how any self respecting Met fan can root for the yankees - in my book youre not a real Met fan

  24. WestyMetfan Says:

Mets have played the Phillies in their division since their inception. That’s 47 years of around 18 games a year. That’s 846 games v. less than 100. What team do you think has had a greater direct impact on the success or failure of our Mets? The Yanks or Phillies? I think the history speaks for itself.

See USMF’s post about the name calling. If you are rooting for the Phillies, so be it. I am not and will never root for them.

  25. chris Says:

Go Yankees… win big tonight in Philadelphia …oh and don’t forget to piss on the mound before you leave.

  26. dykstraw Says:

hmmmm…i’m temporarily switching allegiance and hoping the yanks take care of business in philly. if the yanks must win i want it to be in their faces. also there will be riots either way.

  27. JeffG Says:

I had no particular rooting interest in either the Yankees or Phillies. I figure, either way, one of their hears would be broken. I can more easily ignore Yankee fans gloating as I have had years of experience dealing with their front-running fans. The Mets drew fans even when they lost…I remember Red Barber announcing a Yankee crowd of 500 or so…The Yankees could even half fill the old Yankee stadium the day Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth’s record. On the flip side, what franchise was the first to lose 10,000 games? Philadelphia.

  28. Intrusivity Says:

This is like arguing about traffic on the West Side Highway while your car is sinking in the Hudson River.

    Enough already.

  29. USMF Says:

Joey, B-Jake…I heard last week about the Mets not going after Lackey…this is all coming from Jon Heyman…

I said last week that the Mets should sign both Lackey and Marquis…I like Maine and Pelf a lot (I’m pretty indifferent about Oh’Pea now)…but neither of these guys have proven that they can be relied on to be part of a winning rotation. Let them all fight for the final two spots in the rotation…if they. don’t make it…sorry, it’s the pen or AAA for you.

Only after two starting pitchers and a catcher are sighed should Omar look in to signing Bay or Holliday. We need power, but starting pitching is harder to find and should be signed quickly…Holliday especially probably won’t sign until February anyways….

  30. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

I’d just much rather the Phillies got their comeuppance from the Mets: having the Yankees doing it is kind of like hiring someone to beat up the town bully: it’s hardly as much fun as doing it yourself.
bjake: you drink decaf earl grey? “Pardon me, would you have any Grey Poupon?”

  31. LongTimeFan Says:

    Sanchez -

Not a real Mets fan if rooting for the Yankees?

You’re thinking reminds me of battered wife going back for more. 18 or 19 games isn’t enough against the most obnoxious, arrogant team in the majors and their brawling, cowardly, troll fans who only stop by when they’re on top, and only to batter?

Do you actually think if they won it would stop at the Mets or Yanks? No, it won’t. They - players and fans - will make a point not just to batter our team - but our town. Endlessly. They want not only to own the Mets and Yanks - but New York. Are you not sleeping with the enemy and blind to consequence? Or so set in your ways that you’d cut off your nose despite your face?

  32. CowCrusher Says:

    Here’s a question.
Who were the Chicago Cubs fans rooting or “pulling” for in the 2005 WS? Was it the Astros or those “Southsiders”, the White Sox?

From what I understand, Chicago is a divided city not only geographically, but culturally as well, especially when it comes to baseball. I’m sure this goes for metro area as well as Sox and Cubs fans everywhere.

Sure, they are not in the Media Capital of the World, but the resentment was the same. And of course the Stros were in the Cubs Division.

    See the parallel sitution?

Go Phils!!! Stay Alive and beat them senseless.

  33. Kid #8 Says:

No Met fan on earth hated the Phillies before 2 years ago

Almost every Met fan I knows HATES the Yankees -always has been that way always will be

We’re all gonna be tortured by the friggin yankee fans for the next year

  34. NC Mets Fan Says:

I loath both teams and find solace in those moments when bad things happen to both, like Joba giving up a homer and Cole Hamels eating poop in his start. In a perfect world, the ground beneath both teams would open up and swallow them whole. Instead I wait for the season to end and the off season to begin so the Mets can be contenders once again. Oh yeah, Yankees suck. Phillies suck.

  35. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

Tdfkabl, your Grey Poupon throwdown cracked me up! Remember this? http://retrojunk.com/details_commercial/8730/

  36. Hank in Colorado Says:

Maybe because I no longer live in NYC, I can stomach the Yanks winning the Series. I don’t have to ride the subway or bus with their fans or find myself nauseated by them on the radio. But for me, while I’m not rooting for the Yanks, I am rooting against the Phils. Too much trash talking from their players and their obnoxious fans invading Citi. Yanks win the series? Yeah, well ho-hum, so what, what else is know, and what did you expect, they’re the best team money can buy.

  37. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

FGMF: that’s great. thanks for posting it.

  38. LongTimeFan Says:

    CowCrusher,

I see no parrallel between Chicago and here. Two different situations.

Unlike the Phillies, the Astros and Yankees are gracious and professional in both victory and defeat.

The big difference is that you’re supporting players and an organization who take pleasure in verbally humiliating yours and will gladly do it again this week and for another season, if given the opportunity which you willingly enable by virtue of your support.

And why do you support such utter lack of graciousness and professionalism?

  39. Dan Says:

It doesn’t much matter. If the Phillies lose, their fans will fall back on their recently acquired 2 pennants and ‘08 championship. In the unlikely even that the Yankees lose, their fans will continue to wear those stupid ‘Got rings?’ t-shirts. Sun rise. Sun set.

  40. rj Says:

Im back after a long hiatus… thanks..Im in FLA now looking forward to Port St. Lucie in the Spring..How long till pitchers and catchers??

Anyway on the topic I think that we as Mets fans are used to the obnoxious yankee fans so let them win another ring most of them know ZERO about their own teams history..They are pathetic..However nothing would be worse than a Phillie fan saying their team did something we couldnt do in 2000…Maybe now if they lose the WS to a NY team (EVENTHOUGH I HATE THEM WORSE THAN ANY OTHER THING IN LIFE) they will shut up a bit..

By the way Coop you were right the mothership never came..oh well cant say i never stopped rooting for them

  41. CowCrusher Says:

    LTF,
I was responding to those who said they have to root for a team that is from your area, in this case NYC.
    Those are “weasel-words”.

The fans are the reflection of the team. While I have little love for the Phillies and their fans, I will take them over the typical yankee fans anyday.

Hamels is a putz, no doubt about that, however A-Roid is a liar and a cheat (Since he is so in love with himself, he would have to get a divorce if he wanted to change.

Yet a bulk of yankee fans embrace A-Roid more than Jeter, who at least has some class. Go figure!

I would love to get one of those dark blue shirts with white lettering saying “Got Roids?”… and I don’t mean the ones you use Preparation H on… though A-Roid sure know how to act like one.

Mariano Rivera might one of the greates relievers in history, but what’s with keeping the “42″? Doesn’t he have an respect for Jackie Robinson, or is he just too imporant?.. I bet if he were on another team, that would not fly, whatsoever, regardless of his complexion.

The Phils hav stayed alive for Game 6. It is not impossible for them to take the next two though, it is doubtful… then again, somebody could get injured.. look what happened to Victorino tonight?

  42. Paul Says:

I cant believe what Im reading from many of you….Im 32 years old - not young young but i dont think old either - and Ive been taunted my entire life by skank fans. The thought of Texeiras fat face who ditches his home team for skank money makes me sick. The thought of Posada getting another ring makes we spit blood. Who cares if Phillie fans flip them the bird or make fun of their mothers? We actually have fans who will do the same thing!! The point is that it is not a New York thing its a baseball thing and a fan thing!! People telling me my team stinks year after year after year since I was ten gets to you. Put it this way if you have a younger sibling and you make fun of him its ok but once that outside guy does it ticks you off and you want to rip his eyes out. Kid #8 is totally on the right track! We dont go grocery shopping and see too many phillie fans make fun of us because we’re met fans but we do go out every day -EVERY SINGLE DAY and see that DAMN Yankee NY whereever we go. That has always been that way and probably always will be but WE DONT HAVE TO TAKE IT!!! The enemy of my enemy is my friend!!! Also its not as much as we’re rooting for the Phillies as it is we are rooting against the skanks! If it was Chico’s Bail Bonds vs the skanks it would be the same thing. So for the next few days at least - Go Phils - Roll up and Die Skanks!!

  43. Keepin It Real Says:

Paul, 32 years old is not old! Just sayin…..
