A New York Mets Blog for all fans of the New York Mets, especially former fans of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and residents of Brooklyn, written by Adam Salazar.

Ya Gotta Root For Pedro Tonite!

First off, BMF was elated to watch the Yankees get DOMINATED in their new stadium to open the WS. Hahahahahahaahahaa!!!How great would it be to see them get swept …. A city full of cocky Yankee fans hushed into collective silence… Oh how sweet it would be….

.C’mon all you yankee supporting Met fans - are you telling me that you’re actually gonna root for the Yanks to BEAT Pedro??? That’s crazy!

So what if he didn’t pitch a healthy 4 years here - he was our leader, he changed the mindset and he led us into the BX and beat the hated yanks - at least until the pen blew it.

Pedro will always be one of us. I don’t care what uni is on his back BMF sees Pedro as carrying the orange and blue flag with him to the mound tonite.

WS Quick Hits:

• I think Cliff Lee is about to be known as the best pitcher in baseball…

• WTF with all those empty seats in the 8th and 9th inning???? What a disgrace. Used to be you’d never see that at a WS game especially in yankee stadium but I guess that’s what happens at the modern IBM NY Yankee games.

I am an impartial viewer of this series but I will be rocking my Pedro Mets tshirt for sure tonight.

  2. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

I love that Charlie Manuel left Cliff Lee out there in the ninth, even when he got into a bit of trouble. Old school, that is. Lee made everybody look silly out there.

  3. Intrusivity Says:

Even if you forget about how 3/4 of the years Pedro pitched for us were not memorable at best and below replacement level at worst, he was a distraction that turned every post-game interview about him and how he was feeling physically and/or mentally. Strategically, he may have been a good investment opening the door to players like Beltran, but he is hardly a Met hero for an organization that refuses to recognize most of its own history.

Yeah, root for the Yankees to get swept by the division rivals who are also defending World Series Champions who are also going to be even more belligerent in 2010. Yankee hate is so passe. The battle shouldn’t be on the back pages, it should be on the field.

  4. metsfanatic Says:

I think it is more than rooting for the Phillies beating the Skanks because we hate the Skanks. If the Phillies win the WS, the Mets will be a major underdog battling two time WS Champs. Then if (big if) we rebuild the team it will be a pleasure to kick the Phillies asses.

  5. USMF Says:

I still can’t say I’m rooting for the Phils…but I was defiantly cheering against and laughing at the Spanks…

Lets be honest, the Spanks have a good (and loaded) team…but they had a lot of VERY bad calls go their way and some very lucky breaks this PS…not to mention two “Strong fundamentally” teams make horrible mistakes through out both series…I t was great to see the mistakes and questionable calls and all the hops go the other way…

Oh Yeah…I’m back to cheering against A-Fraud…I love that Spanks fans are all ready saying he’s back to being a PS choker…what a bunch of a*****es…

  6. CowCrusher Says:

Despising the yanks is never passe’…..they would continue to hate us for being so non-fairweather anyway.
Remember, the Phils can only dominate for so long before some of their big guns follow the money and leave.

If the Philthies can keep the ‘Curse of 2000′ going, that’s fine by me.
It’s a Billion Dollar Industry built on Superstition..which actually sells.

  7. Eric Says:

I’ve been reading this blog for a long time and I usually agree with most everything you say, but I can’t believe you would root for the Phillies. Ever.

I despise Yankee fans with a passion and I agree that the vast majority of them are front runners who barely watch the regular season and could hardly name their starting line up, but the fact is you just cannot root for a team in your own division under any circumstances.

Unfortunately the Yankees have won before and they will win again. It will be an annoying couple weeks of listening to all these clowns with their very recently purchased Yankee gear, but it would still be better then a Phillies repeat.

I strongly suggest you rethink your position because having the Phillies win two in a row would be a huge step in the direction of becoming a dynasty and that is the last thing any real Mets fan should EVER want to see.

  8. CowCrusher Says:

    Eric,
My point is who has more to lose regarding ‘dynasties’?

There is nothing for the most part more degrading to the type of yankee fan you’ve described than to come this far only to lose to a team with a smaller payroll and contan less glitz and fluff.

This would be by defult a great kick in the cajones to every so called yankee fan.

They can boast about how many rings they have, but lately they have lost almost as many chances as they gained during the Torre years. I’m sure that doesn’t bode well in the ‘universe’.

  9. Mark Says:

Eric- I am still baffled as to why the Phillies winning the World Series is the “last thing any real Mets fan should EVER want to see.”

Not to beat a dead horse, but the Phillies have been the Mets rival for all of 3 years. While many fans understandably despise them, I still don’t see where this attitude that they have severely wronged the Mets is coming from. Yes, they are kicking our asses. Yes, they are on the verge of becoming a “dynasty.” So what? The Mets should worry about themselves (they have enough problems) and the Mets fans should stop trying to make this a Yankees-Red Sox rivalry. It’s not. If Phillies fans want to gloat and scream about how they’re team is so much better than ours, let them. I know if the Mets won 2 WS titles in a row I wouldn’t give a hoot about the Phillies, Yankees, Braves, whoever. (I’d be in a state of drunken glee for about 2 weeks)

Honestly, it was much more annoying for me to watch the Cardinals win the World Series in 2006 than the Phillies in 2008. The Mets were so close to that title and I despise the Cardinals, so it was the last thing I ever wanted to see.

I get it. The Phillies hate us, we hate them. Ra-ra-rivalry. For all of 3 years.

The Yankees are another story. It’s in my blood to hate them; always have, always will. It’s beyond a Met-Yankee rivalry because there is obviously no on field rivalry between the teams. It’s not jealousy either. It’s just hatred. Pure, unadulterated hatred. I can not root for them, it is simply not possible.

Also, it was oddly enjoyable watching Cliff Lee pitch. The only other time I’ve seen him pitch was this August against that All-Star Mets lineup, but last night was incredible. I love good pitching, period, and Lee threw one of the best games I’ve ever seen. He is a free agent after this season, no? I doubt he has too much loyalty to the Phillies, World Series Champs or not. Mr. Wilpon get your checkbook out please!

    Let’s go Pedro! 4 K’s for A-Rod tonight!

  10. John in Athens Says:

I’m rooting for the visiting team so as to piss off seven stadiums full of the enemy.

As for the “Pedro’s a Met” thing:

    Pedro Martinez 4YRS 79GS 32W-23L 3.88ERA
    Bret Saberhagen 4YRS 74GS 29W-21L 3.16ERA

Both won World Championships for the teams they played for before they came to New York but did not pitch in the postseason as a Met.

Both won Cy Young awards prior to becoming a Met, but neither was particularly dominating as a Met.

Even Rick Reed won 59 games in five seasons as a Met and no one gives a s**t about him!

Both pitched in the postseason for the team they left the Mets for.

Personality goes a long way and I’ll always appreciate Pedro’s contributions to the Mets, but his HoF cap with have a Boston “B” on it (at least in my mind).

    He was 15-8 in ‘05, 9-8 in ‘06, 3-1 in ‘07, and 5-6 in ‘08.

  11. joeybrooklyn1976 Says:

I was a big Rick Reed fan! Not as much as Masato Yoshi though.

  12. Eric Says:

I am not saying that the mets-phillies rivalry is larger or smaller then mets-yankees rivalry. It is just an unbreakable rule to ever root for a team in your own division. Would any of you be rooting for the braves if they were in this situation, I doubt it.

  13. Brooklyn Ruffneck Says:

Braves, Marlins, Phillies, Nationals… who cares? Anyone is better than the Yankees winning. The Phillies won last year, and ya know what.. It didn’t have any lasting effect. No stupid Philly fans running their mouth, no sea newly minted red shirts and jerseys crowding the clothing stores. They win again, hey good job. If the Yankees win though? Oh my god, its another year of everyone of the god forsaken idiots out there who jump on the bandwagon, running their mouths and talking smack about how great the yankees are and how much the Mets suck. It’ll be Yankee gear everywhere, it’ll be the parade, and parade memorabilia, and etc. etc. etc. I cast my vote for the Phillies and for Pedro tonight! Yankees are the kings of the choke in recent years, lets hope this ‘Curse of 2000′ can hold up. Hell, lets not forget.. No other team has lost as many World Series as the Yankees have. Heh.

  14. Mark Says:

It was Braves-Yankees in 99 and yes I did root for the Braves.
