Omar’s “MisRemember” Digs Deeper Hole

In case you missed the latest Met debacle, our GM admitted on a conference call announcing Santana’s surgery that he “didn’t remember” Johan’s elbow issue in spring training because “spring training was a long time ago”…

Wha????????????

Can someone please explain to me how that’s possible? How can it be a GM not be able to recall a spring scare with his best player?

.Even if he couldn’t remember wouldn’t it have come up in the last 48 hours or so as the Mets discussed the history of Johan’s elbow?

It’s hard to know if Minaya really can’t recall the “almost injury” or if he’s now become so flustered when speaking to the media that he panics and says the wrong thing.

I honestly believe Minaya is terrified when speaking to the press and is cracking under the pressure. I mean this was just a conf call and he still butchered it. Which got me to wondering if the Met PR machine (and I use that term very loosely) chose a conf call over a press conference in an effort to protect a GM who’s been spooked by the press.

Unfortunately it doesn’t matter if he forgot the injury or just panicked because both are unacceptable for the GM in the Major Leagues.

BMF has been an Omar supporter for a very long time but Minaya officially jumped the shark in my eyes when he attacked a sportswriter for exposing his good friend Tony “The Bully” Bernazard.

Incidentally I still refuse to believe Omar’s claim he was unaware of Tony B’s behavior. Incidentally that’s no excuse anyway because if he doesn’t know about his way his lieutenant is conducting himself than Omar isn’t doing his job.

.We all know Minaya has never been a well-spoken fellow. His press interactions have always been laced with “y’know what I’m saying’s”, grammar issues and stammering in general as if English was his second language.

I’ve never understood why English poses such a problem to him. Didn’t he grow up in Queens? I think he was born in the states which means he should speak better than he does.

I can tell you my father was first generation and was raised in Brooklyn and Queens by 2 parents who spoke almost exclusively Spanish yet he managed to speak flawless English.

Unfortunately for Omar speaking eloquently to the press is a vital part of the GM position. Minaya was supposed be better than average in other departments such as talent evaluation and minor league development yet … awww, we all know how that sentence ends so I won’t even bother…

There was a time not too long ago that BMF believed the hype and supported Minaya but things have changed and Omar has no one but himself to blame for most of it.

It’s nice that the Wilpons gave him a vote of confidence but if Omar keeps digging this hole…

If we’re going to parse every one of Omar’s sentences, it’s going to be a long winter…
Omar may not be the most eloquent speaker in MLB, but his language skills are certainly up to the job. (btw, Omar was not born here, but in the D.R. He came here when he was around elementary school aged.) If the team were less beset by injuries, and therefore performing more closely to expectations, all of this stuff would be nothing more than a distraction. Omar has been under the relentless attack of all the local media ever since the Rubin affair. Every story written, every question asked seems to be designed to paint Omar in the worst possible light. They are bound and determined to prove that you can’t attack one of them and live through it. Of course, Omar brought this on himself by picking a fight with Rubin, but still it doesn’t seem a fair fight. Anyway, we could look at Omar’s malaprops in a kinder light– think Casey and Yogi or even Ralph Kiner, for example.
Anyway, isn’t the real story of the day the Ollie Perez story. Love him or hate him, the fact that Ollie too is now going under the knife, serves as yet more evidence of the fuku’, the juju, the bad mojo, whatever you want to call it that has afflicted the Mets this season.

  2. Helix Says:

If the anesthesiologist does his job right (wrong), then perhaps we won’t see Ollie in the recovery room but in the basement with the rest of the stiffs.

The good news fellow Met fans, is that this season has become so laughable, such a nadir, that there’s really nowhere to go from here but up. Right??? Please tell me I’m right…

  3. Seaver Says:

Wilpons - PLEASE sell the team to an owner that wants to win

  4. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

I don’t care if he speaks Esperanto, as long as the team wins.

  5. John in Athens Says:

Omar is a great head hunter (when he’s not sending the bully to land Delgado, that is), but he needs to be paired up someone who can MANAGE the GENERAL operations of the team.

    WITHOUT a meddling owner.

Billy Beane proved that he could make something from nothing. With him building a foundation from Omar to add his trophies to, the Mets could be the next New York team to dominate it’s division for decades rather than months.

Next summer will be the 30th Anniversary of the New York Mets drafting the boy genius. Bring ‘em home!

  6. USMF Says:

I don’t care if Omar can speak well in public…honestly it comes easy for some, but can be difficult for others. People tend to equate “good public speaking” with “intelligence”, but in reality, it’s not the case…

What I do care about is how Omar is planing to build this team for next year. Looking at the roster, I see a need for a true solid #2 starter (if not a 1A starter). We need a power bat and we need a LF and 1B…now if we get a power hitting LF’er, then I think we can keep Murph at first…

The problem is, it’s looking like the max amount the Mets are gonna spend is 20mil. I’ve even heard rumors that it might be even less. If that’s true…then I don’t know how these holes are gonna be filled and next year looks a “rebuilding” or “regrouping” year. That’s OK with me (if done right), but with this strange sense of entitlement I hear from a lot of Mets fans and overall impatientness with the franchise, I feel management might cave to pressure to do something stupid.

  7. JJ Says:

It’s goning to take more than one year to rebuild this mess. When you’re looking at filling holes at 1B, 2B (Castillo’s gone after next year). LF, Catcher, and at least three rotation spots this looks more like a four or five year rebuild. Honestly I can’t believe that Oamr is up to this task.

  8. whozgotnext Says:

Omar has to go… except it’s pretty clear that he’s going to stay. The Wilpons will not spend the money to hire a new GM while still paying Omar, plus the cash to replace their entire front office - or whatever part of it the new guy wants to replace.

Also, from what I understand, Jeffrey W is the real GM of this team, with Omar as his front man. Do you think that Billy Beane, or any GM worth having, would sign up for that gig? Don’t think so.

As to the NY writers “picking on” poor Omar in defense of Adam Rubin… WTF did Omar think he was doing when he picked that fight in the first place? To gain what? To deflect from the fact that he had an out of control sociopath working for him for years and failed to do anything about it? That lack of judgement alone should have cost Omar his job.

I just moved back to NY after more than 15 years away, all of that time spent waiting for the day when I could get back to regularly seeing my Mets up close. Here I am, only I can’t even stand to watch this team on TV anymore.

The Wilpons might think that the fans are too stupid to know or care that they and their employees are badly mismanaging this franchise, but they are wrong. The smart ones… you know, the ones most likely to have high-enough paying jobs to afford decent seats at the new stadium - know what a joke they are becoming. And they, and I, are unlikely to continue spending money to support it.

  9. USMF Says:

I don’t think it’ll be that long…I thinking maybe two years.

I know there’s a ton questions about the depth and/or strength of the farm, from what I’m looking at (and I’m no expect, but neither is most of the critics) I see the upper levels as being pretty weak and not much coming.

At the lower levels, there is some pretty good talent, but it’s probably one to two years away. I’m also not seeing a lot of promising pitching either. So I’m guess we have to hope that a rotation of Santana, Neise, Parnell, Pelf and FA’s can win in two years.

The other problem is, Reyes is a FA after next year, LosB is a FA year after that, not to mention all the other potential hols to fill from lesser players.

In reality, I see a lot of player turn over coming and I’m not sure how all the holes will get filled.

  10. Cowcrusher Says:

Personally, I think Omar carries around his own bucket of ‘bad paint’….;)

  11. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

usmf: I think that reyes is under contract through and beltran are both under contract or option through the end of 2011 season.

  12. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

usmf: I think that reyes and beltran are both under contract or option through the end of 2011 season.

  13. USMF Says:

Beltran is under contract till 2011
Reyes has an option for 2011
    Castillo is up in 2011
    Oh’Pea contract is till 2011
K-Rod has a big incentives option for 2012
Santana has an option for 2014
Wright has an option for 2013

But that’s it for any long term contracts…basically, anyone else on the roster either current contact is up, or they are looking at arbitration or they might have an option for next year (that won’t get exercised) .

I just see a ton of holes opening up next year and the years after. Now this could be a good thing depending on how the holes are filled…

  14. The Coop Says:

What the Mets need to do is decide just how much guys like Reyes, Beltran and Wright are worth after their contract years. While Beltran was overvalued at the time, he is actually pretty cheap now, and we could probably net some good prospects for him. I’d hate to see him go but the reality is, if we are waiting for the lower levels to come up through the ranks(and thanks to USMF for being the voice of reason - there is depth in the minors, just in the lower levels and nothing in AAA at the moment to be quick at the draw), then perhaps it would be good to do a “do-over” - then as for Reyes and Wright, they are extremely cheap and it would be wise to hold onto the talent. I would not be surprised in the slightest if they decide to let them walk or go cheap on them, only to go where the money is. I mean, that’s essentially what does this team in. It would be wise, once Reyes is 100% healthy to shop him around and take offers because I do not think the Mets will pay Reyes AND Wright both what they are worth fair value. I mean, would that surprise ANYONE?

  15. USMF Says:

    We got…

1B Ike Davis at first who’s doing good in AA

SS Ruben Tejada who’s doing good in AA (extremely young player for AA)

SS Wilmer Flores who’s doing OK in A (but he’s much younger than most players in A ball)

C Josh Thole who’s hitting very well in AA (another player young for the league)

These are the four top players I hear of. These guys are projected to be good MLB players. Now they appear to be two years away…Now Flores or Tejada will probably switch to 2nd base to replace Castillo (assuming he’s still on the team).

That leaves them with two players for SS. You can switch players around…like move Wright to 1st and let Tejada or Flores play 3rd and trade Ike or move him to the OF. You can let Reyes leave or trade him and keep all young prospects. Plenty of options…

No matter what it looks like we’re gonna have an extra SS, now I love Reyes but you’d have to consider if he’s the best option for the future.

Wright isn’t gonna go anywhere…he’s to clean/pretty and he’s a too good to let get away.

  16. USMF Says:

I forgot, we got another SS in Reese Havens who’s very young and hitting for power in A ball

Looking real quick, here’s some other players who are young and are showing promising number in the lower ranks.

    Shawn Bowman-3B AA
    Josh Petersen - LF AA
    Joshua Satin -2B A

These are just hitters, I haven’t looked at pitching at all…I’m no scout, so who knows if these guys are any good…but they are producing at their level.

  17. Colleen Says:

There are a LOT of good AAA and AA guys out there, but they need guidance and professional big leaguers as hands-on role models. Once again, I think we have some serious malingerers on the DL right now…we need these kids to be called up (before Sep 1st if possible!) and let’s see how well they do. They’re doing great (although not winning a lot of games…not the players’ fault, though) in Binghamton and Buffalo. Someone in the Mets’ front office needs to make a decision and see how many games we can salvage. And, not to beat a dead horse, get rid of Manuel and bring in Valentine!

  18. the dude formerly known as bill l. Says:

Put it in the books! Redding to Dessens to Feliciano to Green. Not exactly how they diagrammed it this Spring, but at least it’s a win.

  20. dykstraw Says:

i wouldn’t care if omar flubbed pressers if he didn’t suck ass at assembling a 40-man

  21. chris Says:

Hate to disagree with the optimism about our younger guys but so far the very best is B rated most are c or lower. If can change of course and I hope they improve. That aside Omar is an idiot and needs to go. No management by committee…but of course that is what the Wilpons will do so they can muddle around. They will repackage things to make it appear like real change is occuring but it won’t. Ricco or Rocco or whatever his name is, is a younger guy isn’t he, not an experienced guy who would forcefully push for real change?

Bernie Madoff may end up being a hero if the have to sell their ‘dodger dream team. ‘ If the Wilpons do sell I want a statue of Madoff in the robinson rotunda.
