Did They Fire Tony B. Yet?
Unfortunately, no. Tony Bernazard is still employed by the NY Mets.
I gotta say this makes me very nervous about Jeff Wilpon’s ability to make objective decisions for the good of the franchise.
Granted word surfaced yesterday that the minor league incident “was blown out of proportion” but it’s hard to know what exactly that means. It might be legit but could easily be Met a generated spin to try and save face – although it’s way too late for that.
Regardless, Bernazard is bad news and needs to be fired. Let’s face it someone like that would NEVER be allowed to continue employment in the yankee organization. It kills me to say it but this is another example of why they’re successful and we’re not.
BMF is NOT a fan of Steve Phillips but he did have some very interesting things to say on Boston radio,
“The Mets don’t necessarily believe in the chain of command. They believe…in what they call a Collegial Organization. What that means is: people down the ladder can go to people up on the ladder…to any level and have conversations, share thoughts, ideas… It sounds nice, but it’s not functional. Because, what ends up happening is, it tears apart the fabric of the organization and its structure…It’s something I think is a nice concept, but it’s not functional or practical in a real business environment… there is too much free flowing information and access without the chain of command…”
I tend to be skeptical of anything Phillips sez about the Mets but this feels painfully accurate and would explain how an assistant to the GM may be operating with more power than the GM himself.
I’m so exasperated with this entire franchise from top to bottom. The Mets really don’t make it easy to root for them do they.
No wonder almost every out-of-towner who moves here roots for the yankees. As Evil of an Empire as they are at least they know how to run a successful franchise.
Why do I always have to root for dysfunctional teams - Mets, Jets, Rangers, Knicks - what a bunch of mutts - every last one of ‘em.

Meanwhile BMF is continuing my recent hot hand (relatively speaking) at predictions by calling a sweep in Houston this weekend.
And no I’m not predicting we get swept out of H-Town instead I think we’ll do the sweeping!
Unbelievable right? You think I’m nuts? Well BMF is so sure of this prediction that I’m willing to bet Tony Bernazard’s job on it!!!
Yup, if the Mets sweep BMF will stand down on my “No Tony B” position. But if the Mets come back with anything less than a clean sweep Tony B gets the ax.
How’s that sound Jeff???
Additionally I’m also placing the over/under at a staggering 13 runs scored by our Metsies this weekend! Meanwhile check out some free professional MLB free PICKS .
Lucky for Met fans the NFL season starts in about 5 weeks and although neither NY team is expected to do much it can’t get here soon enough for me. The Giants are at +1000 to win the Superbowl while my Jets are +4000. Shockingly the early Vegas football odds point towards a Pittsburgh repeat or a Patriot return.
If the yankees win the WS and the Pats win the Super Bowl someone is gonna have to kill me.

Mojo Kitty rocks the batting helmet for luck!

Hate to break it to you BMF, the Mets play in Houston this weekend….maybe you were joking in your post?
July 24th, 2009 at 4:28 am
Chris beat me to it…BMF - A sweep in Cincy by the Mets this weekend just isn’t going to happen.
So…does Tony now get the ax?
What if the Mets sweep in Houston? Is Tony safe?

Why not focus on the bigger issue. The Wilpons are ineffective owners and are the root cause of the problems the Mets face. So you can rant and rave about Bernazard and Minya. Jeff W is a bad leader, period. He is a clueless rich man’s spoiled son.
I was born and raised in Brooklyn guys. My first exposure to baseball was twi-night double headers in 1961 with the Yankees and rooting for Roger Maris. Why I chose to become a Mets fan???? God I wish I could go back and change that. I’m sick of this team.
July 24th, 2009 at 8:38 am
Here’s a thought: if you’re so sick of this team and don’t want to root for them, DON’T!!!
Christ! I’m sick of people saying “I hate that I root for this team.”
You don’t HAVE to root for them. If they turn you off that much, root for someone else.
I hate to quote Fatcessa, but the Mets have had a good team the past few years under Omar and the Wilpons. Yes, the team blew it, and you can argue that its the team Omar put out there so that’s why they need to go. But if Wags didn’t go down last year we could have won an extra game or two and we wouldda made the playoffs. Who knows how that could have changed things. Maybe Tony B doesn’t go crazy. (I still think he should have been fired days ago). While the Wilpons haven’t been the best owners, they do try and they aint goin nowhere. They just built a new stadium why would they sell?
Anyways, Tony B must go. Wilpons not so much. Omar, maybe, had everyone stayed healthy this season we’d be in 1st no doubt! Here’s to 2010 and the hope Omar can pull some trades and FA signings outta his arse and build us a winner.

On a lighter note…….Congrats to former Met Ramon Castro for being on the receiving end of Buehrle’s perfect game. Once again proving that you have to move away from the Mets to have anything to do with a no-no!!
July 24th, 2009 at 9:11 am
I basically agree with angry met fan. The team has been good, in the race all of the time, until decimated by injuries this year. The Wilpons have spent money to field a competitive team. You can argue about the overall plan, and whether its architects need replacing, but I don’t get this “I hate to root for the Mets” stuff either.

Buck - I’m hoping that by extending the olive branch to Nolan Ryan at the 1969 reunion, that we will exorcise the no no-hitter demons we have. I HOPE.

if you have been a Mets fan for as long as a lot of us, you don’t just root for another team regardless of how disgusted you become. i was a Brooklyn Dodger fan through thick and thin. i didn’t live in Brooklyn and it made no sense for me to be a Dodger, because of the abuse i always received due to my being the ONLY Dodger fan in my school and Chelsea neighborhood, but there i was, until O’Malley ripped our hearts out.
most of the Mets rooters of my age were former Dodger fans because if you were a Giant fan it was fairly easy to turn to the Yankees. heck you could see Yankee Stadium from the Polo Gounds. it was just about written in stone that no Dodger fan could turn into a Yankee fan, so until the Mets came along we were baseball orphans.
having so many years invested in the Mets, us old timers have earned the right to be disgusted with the way our team has been run into the ground. there’s no way we could change into any other team rooter, so while we grouse and complain, we stay put.
the most important lesson the Mets Fan must learn is to HOPE FOR THE BEST, BUT EXPECT WHAT USUALLY HAPPENS!

I don’t give a hoot who is liked or disliked in the front office. I don’t even care who owns or runs the team. I follow this team to WATCH BASEBALL.
The art of execution (or lack thereof), the strategy of the game, the success and failure that is just the basic part of baseball.
It’s a great game. It should be savored everytime you watch it - win or lose.
It doesn’t look like the Mets are going to win a championship this year, but it should still be fun to watch baseball.

I’m sitting at my desk in the office with my shirt off, just challenging passers-by to a throw-down Bernazard style.
July 24th, 2009 at 11:48 am
what & why the HELL is taking SO long for wilpon to fire TONY freaking B???
July 24th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Bad visual for me A Phan but funny as hell!!
July 24th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
“A Phanatic”…not sure if you’re a phillies fan, but that line is fkn hilarious.
July 24th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Orig 62,
I would like to agree with your post, but happiness and
success is measured in victories, hence the yankee fan’s ability to gloat and gloat some more.
The only way to win is to aquire at least
25 more WS rings at any cost. That’s just how busines is done right.
July 24th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Not sure where to start with this team. Bu will say i was at the nationals game on monday in washington and was with a met fan in the bleechers who told me about this website. great work keep it up.
July 24th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
The Times had an article about Jeff Wilpon, or the lack thereof, publicly, when times are tough.
Clowns.

I don’t think feeling sorry for ourselves is going to solve anything. I’ve been a proud Met fan through whole decades when the team on the field sucked and this latest disaster isn’t going to break me now. We are just more disappointed because Rey raised our hopes so high. You can’t run an organization where no one is charge, or no one know what they are doing. But even more importantly, this group does appear to have a clear goal or a strategy. Except for bilking money from the fans.
I say get rid of the whole upper management but I don’t have confidence they’d be replaced with anyone better. That said, if ANY team lost 10 of it’s players, essentially most of the starting team, they’d be screwed. No one has a farm filled with extra Reyes, Beltrans, Delgados, etc—if they did they’d trade them.
I’m more pissed at the trainers and medical staff, and the scouts—they are living in a dreamworld when it comes to evaluating talent. The whole org is getting a serious dose of reality right now, probably for the first time.
July 24th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
DOH - my mistake of course I meant HOU not cincy
actually what happened was I wrote Houston but a shirtless Tony Bernazard hacked into my computer and changed it to Cincy
; )
July 24th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
We need a nickel beer night.
July 25th, 2009 at 11:11 am
I agree- there is no one running this organization effectively.
They didn’t hesitate to cut back on seats at the new stadium, and charge more money for tickets, but they also didn’t go out and get new players! Maybe this year will be ok for the Wilpons because it’s a new stadium- I know that I am making the trip next week, but at least I have a new stadium to see- but wait until next year when the novelty wears off, and the stands are half empty. Will they make better decisions about running this team???
I agree with Orig 62, and Foxster. I have been a fan since 1962 as well, and I will not root for another team, but it is so hard to watch this team night after night. It really hurts- but I will still watch, because I will always be a Mets fan.
July 25th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
“….but I don’t get this “I hate to root for the Mets” stuff either. ”
There’s a lot you don’t get.
July 26th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
It seems that Tony B. is the only one around that wants to fight to turn this team around maybe some of that should rub off on the other guys they need something to get them going
