One Game In and Already Frustrated

So now we’re 7 1/2 out. Great.

I know it’s dangerous to put too much stock in one game but our loss coupled with a Philly win certainly wasn’t what we were looking for to gain some confidence.

I guess the sad truth is we should be impressed with Oliver Perez for “only” issuing 4 walks in 6 IP. Despite allowing just 3 runs I thought he got hit pretty hard.

.There seemed to be a very high percentage of balls hit on the screws that happened to find leather out there. I think Perez was lucky his final line wasn’t worse. Then again Ollie has been so awful anything short of catastrophe has to be considered good news.

Let’s keep in mind that Perez generally delivers his best performances in big games and game 1 of the second half in ATL definitely qualified as a big game. So if that was the best we’re gonna get from this season…

Unfortunately I don’t think Perez is any better than his normal terrible self.

The offense sputtered again and the only reason we scored any runs at all was because of shoddy Braves D.

Then again I guess in the past we haven’t been able to cash in on our opponents gaffes so maybe we should be encouraged??? It’s pathetic listening to myself try and find a positive spin for loss after loss after loss.

One thing I will say though, I was impressed with the very nice reception the ATL crowd gave hometown hero Francoeur. Although they barely reacted at all until they announced his name on the PA. What a glaring difference that is from NY where we’re savvy/aggressive enough to cheer you the moment you leave the on-deck circle.

Then again the Atlanta fans are the same ones that didn’t sell out WS games so whattya expect, right?

CoxI feel good about having Frenchy on the team. Time will tell if we get frustrated with his wild swinging ways but at least for now I look forward to watching him hit. The same could no longer be said for that bum Ryan Church.

Injuries continue to drag on at a glacial pace. I swear I’ve never seen a team as slow to heal as the NY Mets. Reyes and Maine are possibilities for July, Delgado won’t be back until Aug and Beltran is still nowhere in sight.

***

I know its not a big deal either way but I like Angel Berroa in this team more than Baby Reyes

***

Great to see Matt Yallof back in business at MLB Network. Yallof is a good dude so I’m glad to see he’s moved on and up from SNY

the Met begin the second half of the 09 season by losing to the Braves. so what else is new?
after five decades as a Mets Fan, i’ve learned to hope for the best, but expect what usually happens.

i wonder if there is any truth to the rumor that Ollie Perez injured his knee when he tripped on the foul line as he attempted his trademark foul line leap on his way off the mound on the half inning.

  2. John in Athens Says:

I liked the Atlanta organist playing “Oliver’s Army” when Perez came up to bat.

“Oliver’s army is here to stay
Oliver’s army are on their way
And I would rather be anywhere else
    But here today”

    Sing it, Elvis.

  3. GroteFan Says:

BMF-You typically seem to be the consummate optimist…..until you talk about Oliver Perez.
When exactly did we become the Yankees.
The guy got what, 5 starts before he was sent down, and was hurt, ahem.
You almost seem to be rooting for O.P. to fail.
Leave that sort of negative thought to me.
I’m the first to admit that I am not making this guy out to be Jerry Koosman, but he did win 15 games two years ago, and double digits last year.
Does he make you crazy? Absolutely, but in fairness to Perez, maybe the time off at the World Baseball Classic did hurt him. Am I crazy about $12M a year? Heck no, but it’s not a five year deal, it’s 3, and if he gets double digit wins each year it will be worth it, although it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen this time around.
As you pointed out, he’s a guy who has the ability to step up in big spots. Unfortunately, I don’t see alot of those opportunities in the 2nd half.

  4. GroteFan Says:

Do I have this correct about the Mets’ Crack Medical Staff?
Fernando Martinez has had surgery for torn cartilage and is out for two months.
F-Mart hasn’t played since July 3rd, two weeks ago today. It’s remarkable how long it takes these guys to diagnose these players injuries.
Are they trying to save money on MRI’s. I’m not a Doctor and don’t play one on TV, but when I hurt my knee skiing this winter, I went to the doctor to find out what was wrong….
I believe this is why Beltran is still down and out. The Mets continued to have the guy play when he was hurt. Now he’s out “indefinitely”…….

  5. IrishMike Says:

Ho hum. A bunch of halfway decent players play halfway decently and thus lose to a team that has some good players that played well. Lather rinse repeat for many nights in the next few months.

I love our broadcast team but they spend WAY too much time analyzing the diference between where the catcher’s target was and where the pitch was thrown, as if every pitcher can hit the target every time. Unless you’re Greg Maddux it doesn’t happen. And we know to be happy if OP throws the ball anywhere NEAR the strike zone. Him missing the target by a few inches isabout as newsworthy as the sun rising in the east.

  6. JJ Says:

Well said IM…This gig is going nowhere, it’s not only bad it’s boring. 7.5/8.6.9.5 does it really matter?

  7. KMac Says:

How exactly is Church a bum? It seems to me he was one of the few players to play hard all the time. For some reason he was on Manuel’s s**t list, but a bum, c’mon BMF. For someone that tries to find the silver lining in everything, that’s a little harsh.

  8. Original62Fan Says:

The sun rises in the east?

  9. Paulie [eatl/ga] Says:

I’m far from an Atlanta fan apologist, but the non-sellout argument is weak sauce. Fans in the South are just less aggresive than those in the North (excluding college football).

I wasn’t at last night’s game but it seemed like every time I looked at the tv the Braves had runners on first and third.

What we witnessed last night were two teams who will have plenty of time in October to play golf and hang out with family and friends.

  10. Dugout Doug Sisk Says:

Just wanted to make sure you all know I am available to pitch tonight if needed. I’m tanned, I’m rested, I’m ready

  11. The Coop Says:

OK Original62Fan just made me LOL. Thanks!

  12. The dude formerly known as bill L. Says:

I’m with Kmac about Church not being a bum–but I suspect that BMF wasn’t being serious with that remark, at any event. Besides, once they’re on the Braves, we’re supposed to hate them aren’t we?

  13. BlondiesJake Says:

Tdfkabl, I think we’re rapidly approaching the day where once they’re on the Mets we’re likely to hate them!

  14. KMac Says:

Both valid points tdfkabl and BJake - LOL

  15. Metsfanatic Says:

I’m trying to look on the bright side but the Nationals are breaking my heart. If it wasn’t for them, we would be getting a #1 draft pick in next year’s draft.

  16. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

I can’t remember the last time I put this little energy into the Mets. 2004? Every time I put on the game I think I’m watching a spring training warm up.

Oh well, at least I’m really catching up on work now that I have so little distraction from the Mets!

Let’s hope it gets more interesting, not less, as the season drags on. . .I really want to have some semi-meaningful games. C’mon Mets, helo me keep the faith alive!!

  17. USMF Says:

You can look at Oh’Pea’s start and take away positive things…

    1. His walk total was 4, not 7
    2. His velocity improved from last start and as the game progressed.
    3. He working out of a couple jams without any damage.
4.Even the last run he gave up was because of a Walk, a broken bat bloop single and a SF…that situation (1st n 3rd, no outs) had potential for another typical Oh’Pea breakdown…

So, yeah…all potentially good signs…but for how many seasons have we been looking at Ollie’s potential good signs or progress???

In reality, that was a good Ollie start…over than a few gems, that’s as good as he’s ever going to be…I don’t care what his contract is, you can’t even expect more that a six inning, 4BB and +/-3 runs game…We can keep hoping the Ollie reaches his “potential” and gives us those 8inning, 12K no ER starts of his on regularly…but it ain’t gonna happen…Ollie has reached his potential…

Anyone got a thesaurus? I need another word for Potential…

  18. BlondiesJake Says:

It’s funny… about five years ago I hoped the Mets would stay in contention for at least half the year. The next year I hoped they would play meaningful games at least until September when college and pro football started. After that I started to believe they could win it all and raised my level of expectation. I guess it’s time to start back at the hope for a half year in contention stage.

I do hope management doesn’t “blow up” the team. When I say “blow up” I mean trade a core piece for prospects and start over. There’s no reason to trade any of Santana, Pelfrey, Wright, Reyes or K-Rod. They can be part of the solution. Additionally, I wouldn’t deal Parnell, Murphy, Evans, F-Mart, Francouer or Stokes (unless some combination of them and other players/prospects brought Roy Halladay to the Mets, which it won’t). They might be part of the solution.

What I would do is let go of Delgado, Sheffield and Castillo and sign big outfield and first base bats in the offseason. Among the outfielders scheduled to be FAs are Jason Bay, Matt Holliday, as well as Carl Crawford if TB doesn’t pick up the $10MM option, Jermaine Dye (both club and player options) and Manny if he doesn’t accept his $25MM player option. At 1B, Aubrey Huff and Hank Blalock are available. Certainly these two positions can be filled with big bats.

As well, I would fire the M&M Boys, Minaya and Manuel. Not sure who I would hire as GM, but that person would install Wally Backman as manager to light a fire under this group.

This season is a mess and we probably won’t see anymore meaningful games this season. But I still think adding the right pieces to the core can make it work next year.

  19. BMF is really The Waffler Says:

I can remember numerous times BMF saying how good Church is, he has the right attitude, he’s a gamer, he hustles, he can hit, etc… Hell, he hven bitched out management for benching him! So what, BMF, happened to your high thoughts of Church?
Did he tuch you in your no no parts? Were you the victem of a one night stand? Did he not return your calls? Seriously, you call him a bum now but praised him before! What gives? We know you have no problem airing your grievences with current Met players, ie: OP, so why the change in attitude toward Church?
I don’t think it was a bad trade as we got a similar player just a younger player.

  20. Bruinsinruins Says:

Julio Lugo just got DFA’d …….how long will it take for Omar to snap up a guy who someone else is paying, regardless of that guy’s ability?

  21. chris Says:

Sign him only after they trade Reyes and a prospect or two for Halliday and possibly Rios. Then he can hold the fort for a while

  22. AJW Says:

Julie Alexandria,I’m exhausted just thinking about having intimate relations with you.

  23. BlondiesJake Says:

Bruinsinruins, you called Lugo to the Mets a while back. I sure hope it doesn’t happen but frankly I expect it will.
