Kredit Kiner with Win
Shout out to Ralph Kiner for doing his part to will the Mets to a 3-2 victory!
In case you missed it, Chris Carpenter had a no-no through 3 and was in complete control with Met batters looking foolish the first time thru the lineup.
When Ralph joined the booth in the top of the 4th he quickly made a point of exclaiming, “He’s got a NO HITTER going, and the thing about no-hitters is you’re not supposed to mention them or it’s a JINX!”
Sure enough in the bottom of the frame Castillo immediately ripped a clean single to left opening the door to a 3-run Met rally.
Being that I’m a big believer in baseball superstitions BMF has to give Kiner Kredit for that W. Good work Ralph - we love ya’!
Staying in the SNY booth for a moment…
Great to see Kevin Burkhardt serving as pinch hitter for Gary who took the day to attend his twin daughters HS graduation. Twins…? Who knew?!?
Hate to watch a game without the Gar’ but I gotta say Burkhardt is a pleasure! He’s well spoken, funny, insightful and most importantly knows when to use each attribute. SNY would be wise to lock him up long-term before someone else steals him away.

What a KICK ASS win that was!
Not only did we finally NOT lose series but we did it in style taking 3 of 4 from St Loo.
Santana may not have been his most dominant self but the numbers don’t lie, it was a great effort: 1ER, 2R, 7H, 3BB, 3K in 7IP. The worst thing about Johan’s outing is it precludes him from exacting revenge against the yankees this weekend… grrrrrrr
Still, the Johan to Feliciano to K-Rod combo worked perfectly. FYI Santana/Rodriguez now lead baseball with 7 win/save combination games. They’re quite the dynamic duo those 2 and I’m glad they’re both on our side.
How ‘bout Nick Evans!!! Dude had another big hit for the second game in a row. This one was a 2 out, 2 run double that proved to be the game winning RBI. Man, the kid hasn’t even had a chance to unpack and he’s lead us to victory twice inside of 24 hours.
I guess he’s officially recovered from his 7-75 start in the minors.
I wonder if Nicky Boy Evans just might blossom into a home grown solution by providing some much needed power. They’ve always said he projects to develop power at the major league level…
Love seeing Fernando2 – that’s Martinez (if we’re going in order of arrival) - always using 2 hands when he catches the ball. It doesn’t matter if he’s sprinting back or diving forward the kid always has his bare hand in place to back up his leather.
I know he’s yet to hit but we can’t get down on him. At just 20 years old he’s a baby so in all fairness we have to give him plenty of time to adjust.

Pssst - guess what boys and girls… we’re only a ½ game out of first place…. Shhhhh – don’t say anything cuz I don’t think Philly realizes we’ve crept this close…

Now for the wretched yankees.
It’s time for payback after that give-away game in the BX. We out played them that series let’s take 2-3 from there at CityField.
BMF is feeling a Carlos Gomez vs the yankees performance from Fernando2 this weekend…
And I’m hoping Sheff’s knee is rested and cortizoned up enough to get in the box because you know deliver yet again against his ex-team…

Mojo Kitty rocks the batting helmet for luck!

Who can argue with 3 out of 4 from one of the better teams in baseball, but the glass is still definitely 1/2 empty with these guys. For all the Nick Evans stories (oh by the way, he’s been here for about 10 minutes), there’s plenty more on Delgado, Maine, Perez, Reyes, shall I go on?
We still don’t know what the injury status is on Beltran and Sheffield. It’s the Mets crack medical staff, remember.
Glad they won, and would love two of three from the Skanks, but it’s still a punch and judy lineup, with a bullpen that has lost it’s footing. Again, I hope that Omar doesn’t believe that as currently constituted (even when guys return) this team has enough pop in it’s line up to win.

That was definitely a fun game and series to watch. I won’t look at where this team is in the standings because I really don’t think they win the division without alot of luck. But what the hell you never know and every win’s a good one.
BTW - Is it me or do the umps clearly blow one call every game? The Pujols pick off in the 9th was brutal. The third base ump had to see that and should have stepped in.

I’m going to borrow BMF’s rose-colored glasses and predict a sweep of the yankees that vaults this team past the Phils into first!
LET’S GO METS!
GO BIG PELF!
TIME TO ACQUIRE A BIG BAT!

It would be key to beat Sabathia tonight .. With Wang on Sunday we can take the series if not sweep ..

Great win yesterday. And Ralph actually sounds better than he has the last couple of years… the Bell’s Palsy that made his speech very slurred seems to have diminshed. Physical issues aside, Ralph sounds alert and sharp. Great to have him on hand!
Minor disagreement with you on FMart’s fielding. He absolutely does NOT two-hand every catch whenever possible… yesterday (or was it Wednesday?), I saw him grap a routine fly nonchalantly with one hand, and the bare hard was nowhere near his glove. I love the kid’s potential and level-headedness — and that was a great diving grab — but he needs to pay more attention to the basics.

About F-Mart, all I know is that long running catch in Right/center was unbelievable…I’m not sure even Beltran would have gotten to that one…I knew he kid was supposed to be fast but that was a great play, his bat still looks stiff, but you can’t complain about his D right now…
As for the team, I’m hoping that O doesn’t make any deals…or if he does, it’s relatively small…The Farm isn’t deep in any means, but there are some really strong type “A” prospects that I’d hate to see traded for a rent-a-player…
I really think that in the near future, we’ll have a really nice young and athletic team (and fun to watch too). I’d hate to see that potential compromised because we are a few games over .500 and in the race…
I’m not writing this season off, but I’ve taken away all expectations for these guys…and I’m finding it more enjoyable to watch…
the curtain is coming down on the Delgado era…Beltran will probably be gone after next year…this current squad is the base of the future, I want them to play, to battle, to learn and to inject fresh energy and a new attitude into this club…
I want everyone to say…”these guys don’t have a chance, they’re not good enough…” and then at the end of the year everyone will be s**tting their pants because this group of over achievers will surprise everyone and become the next “Legendarily Mets roster”…
Overly optimistic, sure yes…but even those who don’t hate this squad have to admit that a large percent of the fan base has soured on these guys and something needs to be done to remove the negative energy from the air…unless that happens, this team will all ways be a bunch of underachieving chokers…

Ralph is still sharp, and doesn’t seem to have forgotten anything about baseball except some players’ names, which were actually a problem for him even before the Mets traded for Gary Cooper.
By the way, the Cohen twins are one boy and one girl. They used to get mentioned on the radio pretty frequently — when they were very young, Murph would ask Gary about them.

Kiners Korner is brought to you by mizzabitchi.. Need to have Kiners Korner again.

I actually *don’t* like Kevin Burkhardt as a play by play announcer. He does a fantastic job with the roving commentary, but he’s no Gary Cohen. Too many mistakes…
June 26th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
I don’t have an opinion on Burkhardt, but am a little lost as to why Cohen needs a successer anytime soon (which somebody suggested yesterday). When I interviewed him a couple of months ago, he told me it was his dream job, and I can’t imagine him leaving it anytime sooon. Am I missing something?

B-Jake, I suggested the idea that KB is being groomed for the booth, but not to to replace Gary, but to replace Hagen on the FAN…
I’d have to assume the if Gary ever left SNY (not going to happen) but Howie would take his place in the booth…but grooming our own guy who is a true Mets fan for the future is better than trying to hire someone who’s already in the league…
I wasn’t around when Gary first started, but you’d have to think that he’d give Murph a ton of credit for making Gary into the announcer he is now…
Seth, of course he’s no Gary Cohen, not too many people are…he’s near the top of a short list of truly great announcers…try watching the MLB network, you’ll see a lot of feeds from other teams announcers, you’ll then really get to appreciate how how good we have it. As disliked as Hagen is, he’s still just as good if not better than majority of the guys out there…

What’’s the deal with Wayne?
Is he ready to retire or move on?
I think he does a decent job.
Wow, ‘Kiner’s Korner’…that brings back great
memories of enjoying the games with my late grandfather.
Still miss Bob Murphy….RIP Al and Bob

I think we should all give thanks to whichever higher power you prefer (including the baseball gods) that despite the shadow of 2 collapses, a zillion injuries and a team full of bench players, the New York Mets are half a game out and showing some SERIOUS grit and the will to win. I think they really showed us something with this Cards series. They don’t care who is on the DL, they are going to keep it together and keep moving.
Reminds me of some of those 90’s and mid ‘00 teams that basically sucked but we cheered anyway and had fun with it without all the WS expectations. Something very Mets about a bunch of no names, a couple stars, and a little miraculousness here and there. . .

USMF, thanks for the info. Having lived around the country and listened to lots of announcers, I will agree that most stink. Personally I was hoping to take Hagen’s place!

Gary Cooper.. Kiners famous flub..God I remember that
June 26th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Ralph also mixed names up. Like the time he introduced Mookie Wilson and Hubie Brooks as Mookie Brooks and Hubie Wilson. He also used to say Happy Birthday to all the fathers on Father’s Day!

Speaking of horrible announcers, watching Chicago v Chicago game and White Sox announcers are the biggest homers and most annoying broadcast team I’ve ever listened to for a major league club.

i think cohen does a good job but his hatred of the yankees is dumb. i hate the subway series. the dis functional fans on both sides turn what should be just for braggin’ rights into a blood feud. cohens admission that he did not care who won when the phillies vs yankees was an idiotic statement and made worse when i heard it repeated several times on wfan. a yankee fans are no better. spending 1.5 billion dollars the last 8 years and nothin’ to show but misplaced arrogance.met fans, our rivals are the phillies braves cards……
