A New York Mets Blog for all fans of the New York Mets, especially former fans of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and residents of Brooklyn, written by Adam Salazar.

D-Murph Goes Off - Sheffield Two-Week MVP

Young Daniel Murphy exploded with a 3-4 night that saw him jack a 3-run homer and knock in 5 to lead the Mets to victory and first place.

The Mets can officially be called the “Replay Kids” with their 4th TV monitor aided ruling in 5 games. Incredibly all 4 calls have properly been ruled in our favor, which is a stark departure from traditional Met luck.

.BMF guarantees this was the correct call.

When you watched it live on TV the ball clearly changed its trajectory. In fact initially I was so sure it hit the Subway Sandwich sign that my only question was to double check the if yellow sign indeed qualified as HR territory.

Unfortunately as soon as they ran the slow-mo replays it started looking less than clear-cut. But I believe irrefutable evidence was found within the second angle SNY showed, the one where you didn’t see the ball enter frame because the yellow sign was flush to the top of your screen. Once the ball cleared the yellow background it was unmistakably moving in the wrong direction for a cleanly batted ball. No 2 ways about it - HR.

Shout to the umpiring crew for getting it right and shout to the Wilpons for voting to approve instant replay last year.

BMF has to wonder what would’ve happened if Sheff (who got tagged out at the plate when Murphy’s ball was mistakenly in play) never touched home and simply walked to the dugout mad at himself for being cut down?

Then 8 minutes later when the HR is credited and Murphy advances from second to home would Sheffield have run onto the field and touched the plate before Murphy? What if he didn’t? Could the Nationals protest that his run since Sheff was in essence passed on the base paths? Or would he get a pass on never touching home – which I think would theoretically be the first time in Major League history a run scored without anyone touching home…???

Instant replay opens up some weird stuff.

***

.In the meantime BMF would like to propose MLB install “sound strips” (for lack of a better name) to denote HR lines.

For example, if you’ve ever played a game of squash there’s a red line on the wall above which you must hit the squash ball. But instead of paint the red line is a thin metal strip that makes a distinct “clank” when the ball strikes it to let you know your shot was in.

MLB should install similar metal strips in place of all the painted HR lines that zig-zag around the increasingly wacky ballparks.

Additionally if the Subway sign were made out of thin metal everyone would’ve heard it careen off the sign.

Kevin Burkhardt reported the people above the sign (in the Pepsi Porch) thought it didn’t hit anything while those below (in the Mo’s Zone) all claimed it hit the sign. Unfortunately no one heard a sound so I gotta believe the sign doesn’t “ring” when hit since I tend to believe Mo’sZoners over Pepsi Porchers.

.Therefore in addition to sound strips MLB should decree all signs in HR territory be made of thin “ring”-able metal too.

Sheffield is Mets Two-Week MVP

Almost lost in all the D-Murph and replay hoopla is Gary Sheffield’s continued meteoric rise on the Mets. A handful of weeks ago Sheff wasn’t a thought in anyone’s mind yet here he is batting clean-up and dominating pitching like he did in the good old days.

Murphy’s 5 ribbies put us over the top but Sheffield staked the Mets to a first inning lead with a 2 run double. I read somewhere (either MetsBlog or BMF boards) that Met fans are now chanting “Gar-y Sheff-ield” which I guess is a Somali pirating of the yankee schtick.

It’s become ridiculous how well Gary Sheffield is playing.

Quick Hits:

• Crazy game for Santana who K’d 11 yet walked 6. Johan still got the W allowing 3R in 6IP

• F-Mart failed to run out pop-up that was dropped on the infield. It was a major brain freeze no doubt but BMF is cutting the kid a break since he’s still a deer in headlights out there to a certain degree. Everyone raves about his maturity so I’m sure it won’t happen again.

• Another thing about F-Mart is he sure does have a head of hair to be proud of! Check out the thick Latin lox on him next post game interview. Dude should do a Pert ad campaign!

BMF - thank you for FINALLY calling Daniel Murphy waht he prefers to be called - - DANIEL

  2. dyhrdmet Says:

I watched how that part of the game was broadcast on MASN with the Nats announcers. It was a bit more entertaining than SNY but with no better camera angles. They had a camera to illustrate how the front of the overhang is sitting over the field of play, but nothing from that camera of the actual home run.

on the broadcast, Rob Dibble was convinced that the ball hit the far CF side of the Subway ad, on the way down, and the ball changed angles to drop down to the field (which seems to be the consensus). Bob Carpenter seemed very very convinced that if the ball had hit the sign, seemingly at any angle, that the only bounce it could take would be towards the infield, and therefore was ruled correctly on the field when that did not happen (and he even had this opinion after the umpires came back out).

If the quirks of the ballpark will lend themselves to replay reviews, SNY should set up some more cameras fixed on the walls with different side angles.

  3. Lord Charles Says:

I never questioned whether the ball hit the subway sign, but like BMF, I wasn’t sure what that meant.

As for the (potential) issue of Sheff touching home, I think the best way for MLB to avoid that happening is whenever there is a replay, essentially reset the AB. Send all of the players back to the original bases and keep the batter at home. Then when the decision is made, allow the runners to advance accordingly.

  4. dykstraw Says:

i’m surprised so many people were asking whether the subway sign is in play. it’s above the stands which are above the fences…isn’t it clear it’s home run territory? we’ve seen at least a few balls clank off the pepsi signs (below the porch, not the monster above it) and it was clear those were HR.

  5. Matt the Met Fan Says:

Okay ..the picture of Murphy is disturbing .. wondering if BMF sleeps with it under his pillow?? …

good idea on the sound strips - something has to be done before this sport turns into Football w/it’s endless delays ..

read a ridiculous article in the Post (”it’s in the Post? then it HAS to be true!!”) by Larry Brooks proclaiming all Met players - past and present as lazy and that F Mart will fit in well .. how freakin stupid .. what is with these writers? it made me want to scream ..

  6. joeybrooklyn1976 Says:

“that Met Fans are now chanting “Gar-y Sheff-ield” which I guess is a Somali pirating of the yankee schtick”

It’s being done for all the players and I ain’t a fan of copying the spankees spams. It’s a really big pet peeve of mine. I have no problem applauding an individual player but do you have to use the same exact cadence and rhythm as those fools who do the Yankee “roll call”(how un-fun is that??? a Roll call??? Give me Mr. Met and his big baseball head anyday) . Really gets under my skin. Why can’t we have a quick chant instead. So instead of Gar-y Sheff-ield we can do Shef-Shef-Shef-Shef-Shef (ended with a “Hello Children). Or let’s get really impressive. For Johan, one side of the stadium should say Jo the other side should respond with Han

Thanks BMF. I should be happy about a good old fashioned sweep by the AAA Mets over the perpetually AA Nats but instead you got my Irish and Italian going at the same time!!!!!

Nice to see Murphy bust out. I was actually walking my dog listening to the radio. Too bad it was Wayne’s inning.

  7. Lord Charles Says:

    dykstraw,

I think the confusion (at least for me) comes from the fact that the Subway sign, if dropped straight down, would actually be in the field of play. The lower wall (with the orange home run line) is actually several feet behind the front of the porch. I assumed the front of the porch would be treated just as an OF wall would be: over is a HR, off is in play.

  8. The Coop Says:

technically those “let’s go yank-ees” or “car-los BEL-tran” clap-clap clap-clap-clap are rip-offs of the old Lets go Rangers chants. The Devils have ripped that off as well and even the Potvin Sucks isn’t sacred. I hate those bastards.

PS I love Joey’s Isaac Hayes reference. Money.

  9. cactus Says:

how about not building parks with fake character overhangs, seats at the top of the wall, and lines denoting home runs? it’s like playing stickball in some of these parks. home runs should be balls that go over the wall, the end.

  10. KMac Says:

MTMF, I had the same reaction to that article. What an ahole!

cactus, I agree completely. It’s like they tried to build in as many confusing things into the outfield walls as they could. It really is a joke to see all of the replays. I’m glad they have replays, but they shouldn’t be needed as often. It’s not just the new parks though as there were 2 replays at Fenway.

  11. The dude formerly known as Bill L. Says:

Had to watch on MASN also, as Mets feed is blocked out in Va. when they play the Nats. On the postgame, they put together some clips of the Nats lowlites for the game. Ray Knight was almost beside himself as he narrated one missed ball after another by the Nats. He went further–they put boxes around players who were out of position, drawing arrows showing how the second baseman should have covered first on this play, and the catcher was out of position on that play. He ended it all with an eyeroll. Really, the Nats are pretty unwatchable defensively, but it was good to see them get some real grief from Knight, as the Nats announcers usually spend the game just talking about how much they dislike Citi Field.

  12. Metsfanatic Says:

Public Service Announcement. Okay I’ve done it and you should too. I know it takes a little more time and is inconvenient but you can do it. He deserves it and you know he does. If enough of us do it maybe he can make it against all the odds. I WROTE IN GARY SHEFFIELD FOR THE ALL STAR GAME!! His name is not on the ballot though Lastings (Stings) Milledge is and he is sitting in Triple A whatever. But Sheff deserves to go. Go to MLB,com and write him in. Murphy is on the ballot but Sheff isn’t. WRITE IN GARY SHEFFIELD! WRITE IN GARY SHEFFIELD. WRITE IN GARY SHEFFIELD! Public service announcement is over.

  13. GroteFan Says:

Cactus-Is the “seats on the wall” reference to Fenway or Citifield?

  14. EdH Says:

    About sound strips…

I hope I have this story right, but back in the 1970s, when Yogi was managing the Mets, they played in Cinci, where there was a second wall behind the first. The second was a HR but the first was in play. One of the Mets (Swoboda?) hit a ball the umpires said was in play, but Yogi argued it had hit the second wall, which you could tell by the sound. After the game, Yogi said something like, “Anyone who couldn’t hear the ball hit that second wall is blind.”

  15. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

Did you guys see the footage of Zambrano going apes**t in Chicago? He threw out the umpire! Priceless.

Great for Murph last night—let’s give Manuel some cred for giving him a couple days rest and banning him from overworking in the cage.

I think the Sheffield naysayers have quieted down–between the fans chanting his name, wearing chef hats and generally gaga for the guy I think he’s officially a Met now. Who woulda thought that not only he’d be producing and playing every day, he have a leadership role in the clubhouse??? Talk last night about how since Delgado left the tone there has subtly changed as the AAA team rallies together. Also that a bat company created a special Sheffield bat—he signed a bunch of them and gave one to every player in person. Nice.

Pagan is also quietly contributing—nice plays and some good hits.

But D-Wright with the golden sombrero!! OUCH.

  16. metsfan3131 Says:

About the homerun call last night, does anyone else think that the water bottle that fell was sitting ontop of the subway sign and as the ball nicked the sign the vibrations knocked the water ball off the sign. I cant see the video well enough to see if the water bottle was dropped but im looking for something.

  17. The Coop Says:

FGMF this is why I love you. Yes I noticed too that without Delgado and to a lesser extent Reyes this team has been performing above their expectations and dare I say performing ABOVE the level of their competition, which was a huge complaint at the beginning of the season. I liked esp how when Johan wasn’t having his best game the rest of the team picked him right up for his deserved win (although it pretty much cancelled out the Marlins game where Murph Murphed the ball in LF). But I wonder if Delgado’s “leadership” translated into the “I” in “Team,” k-w-i-m? Delgado was famous for bolting when he had a bad game and sticking around when he had a good one. This time we see others picking the other up and it’s good. Dare I say we bring back Bobby V and have these guys doing push-ups?

  18. joeybrooklyn1976 Says:

The Coop - that’s true now that I think about it, but that’s probably why it irks me even more. I’m an Islander Fan. When someone still sucks 20 years after he played doesn’t that mean he really didn’t suck:) Anyway this is the BMF board we are united in metness.

  19. The Coop Says:

I don’t even remember Potvin playing, Joey. LOL it’s one of those uniting things. Like mets :)

  20. Matt the Met Fan Says:

SO BUMMED the Nationals are leaving town .. BUT wait .. 12 more games with them this year !!! LOVE THEM !!

Read the Washignton Post now .. they call Manny Acta Manny Actless and Actaman .. Dunn swears that was no Home run …

even if the Nats play .500 ball the rest of the year - impossible right? - they end up 71-91 .. wow ..

  21. The Coop Says:

MtMF - a bunch of us are going to DC for the series in a week and a half. You hear lots of obnoxious Mets fans, it’s probably me and CoreyNYC

  22. BlondiesJake Says:

BMF, thanks for finally calling him Daniel Murphy. Great night for the kid and good to see it resulted in another win. But dismissing F-Mart’s failure to run out a popup because it was his ML debut is beyond ridiculous. I’m not saying he’s a bad guy or anything like that, but please don’t try and make up excuses, they don’t fly.

joeybrooklyn1976, love the South Park pull. And I understand getting upset about stuff getting ripped off, but confess to really liking “roll call” and the way the players would respond to it, basically thanking the fans for acknowledging them. There are only so many rhythms and cadences, and they used it in a very different way than “Let’s Go Rangers” so it doesn’t bother me they was the current chant does.

Metsfanatic, that’s the funniest post I’ve read all year. I assume u were joking, right?

    LET’S GO METS!

  23. Ceetar Says:

I think the glancing blow of that home run wouldn’t have make a clear ’sound’ no matter what the ads were made of. I suggest tilting them and getting a camera.

  26. USMF Says:

metsfan3131, I was looking at the same thing, I looked and I didn’t see anyone in the area who could have dropped that bottle…right or wrong call by the umps, who knows, but I have no idea what they saw that could over turn the call on the field…

I had a bad feeling about last nights game, we had our Ace to finish the Sweep against the worst team in MLB…it seemed like too much of a good thing…it the past, they’d of gotten blown out of that game…

As for F-Mart…you got your one free pass rook…I won’t kill him on it…he looks like he’s pressing a little to impress everyone, he hasn’t look good at the plate yet…I think his brain fart was the result of young frustration…

Anyone notice that it’s Shef who’s sitting on the bench next to F-Mart?

Even on Santana’s “bad” day he’s better that 90% of the pitchers out there…

  27. Seaver Says:

BMF - you’re giving the kid a break for not running out a pop up because he is like a “deer in the headlights” .. That’s wrong .. coming up from AAA the kid should hustle more than any other time in his career … I was appalled he didn’t run it out .. how stupid can he be

  28. dykstraw Says:

you crazy people can hate on delgado all you want, but that lineup last night had about 15 HR total, and when we’re not playing the nats, this is going to matter. the only credible threat we have is sheffield and teams are getting wise and pitching around him.

the only thing golden about the golden boy DW was his sombrero, and he looked like he was getting ready to board the 10:22 express to slumpsville. regardless of any fawning over his average or excuses about the park, 3HR from wright at this point is not cutting it.

leadership blah blah blah. i wish we went out and got adam dunn, i like the way he leads balls over the outfield fence.

wins are wins, even over the nats. but this team needed another bat before it lost delgado and it desperately needs one now. you can’t count on sheff and murphy to put this team on their back every game.

  29. Big Tony Says:

I confess, I didn’t want Shef. Where would we be without him?????

  30. BMF Says:

First of all if you’re paying attention you’ll know that I refer to Murphy as Danny, Daniel, Murph2 and DMurph. Any name might be used at any time.

Just because I called him by his full name once in today’s post certainly doesn’t mean I will never again call him Danny - I will.

What’s odd to me is the very small segment of people who get bizarrely worked up over the nickname Danny!

My attitude is once you’re in the big legues you’re fair game for nicknames. This sport has a long history of nicknames and it ain’t changing now.

Personally I don’t care I Murphy prefers “Daniel” rooting for a Daniel is no fun at all. “Go Daniel Murphy” sounds like I’m rooting for a freakim Irish Catholic pastor.

“Go Father Daniel Murphy - Molest those boys!!!”

That would be loads of fun.

Or we could just call him Insurance Person since he once wanted to be that as well.

Maybe they shouldn’t play that Irish song when be comes to bat because it’s called “Danny Boy” - I think that’s the name but u get the point

C’mon guys lighten up - Danny Murphy is a ballplayers name. A gritty, dirty knock you on your ass ballplayer!

THAT’s what young Daniel and his fans should be concerned about!!!

  31. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

Seriously, if his nickname is the biggest problem Murph has, he’s a lucky guy. Let’s spend the energy worrying about his D, not his name. Look at Beltran, the entire Alou family, Angel Pagan, etc—no one pronounces their names correctly and I don’t see any protests.

  32. The Coop Says:

So Dykstraw tell me how you really feel

  33. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

Metsblog has the Zambrano clip. That guy is one crazy MF.

  34. BlondiesJake Says:

BMF, if you have a press pass and you go to interview Murphy, will you purposely call him Danny because you can? Somehow, I think not. And if you did and he told you to go away, I’d laugh. Of course, having stood by as he’s been interviewed in the clubhouse a couple of times, I’m sure he’d be more polite than you are. But hey, he’s a major leaguer, so he’s fair game for nicknames, irregardless of his personal request.

Your stance on this issue is as insane as your excuse for F-Mart not running out his popup.

    LET’S GO METS!
    GO BIG PELF!
CALL THE KID BY THE NAME HE PREFERS. WHAT’S SO EFFING DIFFICULT ABOUT THAT, ESPECIALLY SINCE CALLING HIM DANNY INSTEAD OF DANIEL ISN’T EXACTLY A SCINTILLATING NICKNAME!

  35. The Coop Says:

    OMG Zambrano is nuts!!!

  36. USMF Says:

BMF, to correct you on the Murph song…it’s called “I’m Shipping Up To Boston” performed by The Dropkick Murphys who are a Boston Irish Puck rock band and notorious Red Sox (and Bruins, and Celtics) Fans…Their the one who wrote the Red Sox theme that was in the movie “Fever Pitch”

…So unless O is planning a trade with the Sox, they probably shouldn’t play that song…

  37. Fenway Met Fan Says:

dykstraw - the golden sombrero is never fun, but that only dipped his average to .345. How much Haterade did you drink this morning?

  38. GroteFan Says:

I’m trying to understand why this is the bridge that BMF decided to die on. Or will it be back to NMMF by tomorrow, when he decides to call someone, not by his name?
    Fair game for what?
    Makes no sense.

  39. USMF Says:

Because Grote-y (purposely redundant) …”Danny” is “cooler” than “Danial”…

  40. GroteFan Says:

USMF-I guess, according to some folks.
MTMF-Love the Brooks article in the Post.
Team needed to be called out.

  41. Metsfanatic Says:

BlondiesJake - I think we have to calm down about Sheff.

  42. KMac Says:

How about this deal. BMF calls Murphy “Daniel” and BJake stop using “irregardless”, which, despite all of his past attemtps to justify it, is not proper English. It’s a win-win all around.

  43. The Coop Says:

    All right KMac!

  44. IrishMike Says:

The “irregardless” thing is a BMF inside joke of sorts.

  45. Kevin McReynolds Says:

I love Danny Murphy, irregardless of his inability to field.

  46. USMF Says:

it’s kinda like being fans of Pink Bats (And every thing they support) and girls who sell Murcurys (I think that’s going back three years…)

  47. Val Veeta Says:

FGMF I am glad someone else caught the SNY comments during the game (was it Gary?) that the whole attitude of the Mets had shifted since Delgado’s departure, and as a result “they were coming togehter as a team.” I took that as a genuine slam at Delgado, and ITA! I put a large part of the blame for past Mets’ underperforming at LosD’s sluggish feet. Ever since his “we’re so good, we get bored” comment, I wanted his arrogant ass shipped out of Metsville. Yes he can slug with the best of them, but IMO he has divided the clubhouse into Latin and non-Latin contingencies, refused to play for a manager he didn’t like, won’t man up for the media, and his anti-American crap has always bugged the hell out of me. I may be alone in saying this, but I want him gone for good.

  48. The Coop Says:

Val Veeta - I wanted him off the team yesterday. Somehow I think that Delgado will make the team worse when he does return. I hope they have like a 50 game lead when that happens with 49 left to play

  49. BlondiesJake Says:

KMac, as IrishMike mentioned, it’s an inside joke. Irregardless, if you could convince Brooklyn Met Facist (he writes a big league blog and is fair game, so those are my new nicknames for him) to use Daniel all the time for Murphy I will stop using irregardless.

  50. KMac Says:

Jake, I know its an inside joke, I was joking as well. It hurts me to see you and BMF fighting.

I didn’t take the comments about the team coming together after Delgado got hurt as a jab at him, but more of the team realizing they were going to have to pick up the slack.

  51. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

Yes, just reporting what I heard on SNY, not editorializing about Delgado, who I don’t dislike personally. I think that when a team loses virtually all of its power and star players to injury, either they completely lose it or they man up and get it together. Probably less about Delgado personally then any group dynamic that has a power vacuum after a leader departs.

  52. docgoodenrookiecard Says:

the “sound strip” is a great idea. it would also be smart not to have a white font on the sign which is the same color as a white baseball. that was not such a smart idea

  53. Cowcrusher Says:

(he last I heard is that Milledge was still hurt while playing for the Syracuse Chiefs.

  54. BlondiesJake Says:

    Famous Daniels:

    The Book of Daniel
    Daniel Boone (pioneer)
    Daniel Webster (statesman)
    Daniel Day-Lewis (actor)
    Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter)
    Jack Daniel

Somehow, changing any of those to Danny doesn’t quite cut it in my book.

    LET’S GO METS!
    GO BIG PELF!
I’M STILL A FAN OF THE BROOKLYN MET FASCIST, IRREGARDLESS OF HIS STANCE ON THIS ISSUE!

  55. The dude formerly known as Bill L. Says:

Val Veeta: that was a pretty cheesy comment about Delgado. :)
Irregardless, painting him as a divisive figure is ridiculous. Five years ago, as a personal protest against the war, he doesn’t stand for “God Bless America” and that makes him anti-American??? Please. That’s what the country is supposed to stand for–the right to stand up, or not, for what you believe in. I think he’s a classy guy.

  56. USMF Says:

This isn’t meant as a knock at Delgado or Pete…but Pete was the leader of the pitching staff, like Wags was the leader of the Pen and Delgado was the leader of the position players…All three were looked at as leaders in the club house.

Even last year, Santana differed to Pete as the leader…

When LosD was doing well, he was a good leader…He carried the team through big parts of 2006 and 2008…when he was struggling, he wasn’t able to be a strong leader…same thing with Pete when he was hurt…

Unfortunately, guys like Wright and Beltran always looked to LosD as the veteran leader and never was able to become the central “vocal” leaders they needed…

Now that LosD is gone, I think that Santana (and a little Shef too) have gotten Wright and LosB to come out and be more vocal…I’ve even seen a change in Castillo in the field now that Delgado and Reyes are out, watch how Luis is taking charge in the infield…

I really think that with all the injuries, guys have decided that they can’t sit by and wait for things to happen, they need to take charge.

  57. GroteFan Says:

    Re-Delgado
None of knows what or what he didn’t do to Willie Randolph.
That said, nobody had any when he hit .429 with a home run, and 2rbi against the Dodgers, and .304 with 6 walks, 9rbi, 3 hr, and 3 2b against the Birds in the LCS in ‘06.
Or when he started off this year at .300, with 4 jacks, 7 doubles, and 23 rbi.
If not Delgado, they need another bat.
Remember, it’s the NATS we just beat up on for 3 games.

  58. The Coop Says:

GroteFan I don’t disagree with your last line about beating up on the Nats the last three games.

but bear in mind we also beat up on the Sox for 2 out of 3 in Boston. Just some food for thought

  59. USMF Says:

If we trade for anybody…I want Adrian Gonzalez…I would trade Murph, Evans and Neise and maybe more for him…

  60. Sam in North Cakalakey Says:

It would have to be more and not sure you can give a way all that. You have to remember Delgado will be back and where would you put him if 1st base is occupied by an All-Star? Put $11 Mil, 9 HR’s and 20 something RBI on the bench?! Not going to happen.

  61. USMF Says:

I understand it’ll be a big gamble, and not realistically gonna happen (during the season at least)…but even if LosD comes back on schedule, it’ll be asking a lot for dude to be ready to produce as expected…

If I were GM, I’d sit $11mil with unknown production for a few weeks and put him on wavers if it meant that we could solidify 1st base for years (through 2011 for under 15mil total for the three years) with a LH power hitter/run producer who can field the position very well and who is entering his prime…

  62. BMF Says:

I think we’ve officially entered Bizarro world!

The Mets are in first, their roster is decimated by injuries yet Jake and Grote are getting their undies in a bunch over “Danny” Murphy??????

I can’t comprehend why any of the 3 people who care about this issue actually CARE about this issue!!!!!

If you guys have decided the noble cause of “Daniel” Murphy is your cross to bear God bless ya’ but I have to say I’m mystified as to why you find it all so crucial - need I remnd anyoe this is a BASEBALL BLOG!

s**t if u guys think “Danny” is insulting I wouldn’t want you to hear what he was gonna be called if he kept butchering plays in left!!!!

The way I see it this BROOKLYNMETFAN where we talk about our players like we’re hangin’ with them on the street corner

And to answer you question Jake no I wouldn’t call him Danny if I were interviewing him because that’s a much more formal setting than what we have here - a baseball blog

And I’m guessing u wouldn’t call Randolph “BIC” Willie if u were interviewing him

Or how bout your BLBB nickname for Endy - perhaps he wouldn’t appreciate being called a bastard as in ” Best lil Bastard in Baseball”

In summation this is the Internet - it’s kinda like the wild west of sports journalism so if a guy named Daniel is called Danny it seems fairly tame to me

And honestly guys - who cares??????

  63. GroteFan Says:

BMF-Please keep these two phrases out of the same sentence.
    “Brooklyn Met Fan, and Journalism.”
Not saying Blogs can’t be journalism, but don’t try to tell me that this one is.

Coop-I hear ya about winning 2-3 in Boston.
    Excellent point.

  64. BlondiesJake Says:

BMF, I wouldn’t be able to interview BIC Willie without insulting him, so I wouldn’t interview him at all. I’d probably try to explain to Endy why I call him the BLBB and end up looking like a fool, which wouldn’t be a new look for me.

And if you don’t care that we care, then stop trying to argue your side of it and just call him Daniel.

And since the outfielder I despise has become the apple of many fans eyes, I’d much rather debate this than that.

On another subject, a teller at the bank said she liked my shirt. Of course, I was wearing my BMF Exclusive GO BIG PELF shirt!

    LET’S GO METS!
    GO BIG PELF!
    BRING ON THE FISH!

  65. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

What’s that song, “Let it Be?”

Can we all take a vote about whether this issue of Murph’s name is too boring to ever discuss here again? Again, pretty much every Latin player’s name is mispronounced and no one is getting nuts over that. I’m with BMF, this issue is about as scintillating as an interview with Steve Trachsel. Let’s move on!

  66. GroteFan Says:

Ok, so back to BMF’s 2nd bullet, where he is way out of line, trying to explain away F-Marts’ inexcusable gaff.
Wait until this thing bubbles up tomorrow after an off day, when folks have had a chance to reflect on it.
Newsday has at least three articles/columns about it. This is the kind of thing that makes it so tough to root for these guys. You can’t make it up. If the team had any stuff at all, they’d bench him, or send him back down. But how can you do that, when the so called stars do the exact same thing.
People wonder why we have the little brother syndrome. It’s because no matter what our team does, it’s wrong.
Great stuff guys. Thanks for making us proud.

  67. DZNUTZ Says:

Here’s an idea with the HR’s. Have the Subway sign and any other sign that is suspect, attached to the HR Apple. When the ball hits, it just triggers the apple and then its a HR. As much as I’m a fan of this instant replay, it really does take time from the game. BUT I’LL TAKE IT!

  68. Ron Mexico Says:

Mets don’t have the prospects to get Adrian Gonzalez without stripping the farm bare. I wish they did.

  69. BrooklynMetFan Says:

    Danny Murphy

  70. Val Veeta Says:

Bill L - re my cheesy comments about Delgado.

I don’t dispute LosD’s right to vocalize his opposition to an unjust war or anything else. But refusing to stand for God Bless America (a song about our country, not our government) IMHO could be seen as insulting to some.

He has also been vocal about his opposition to American military bases in Puerto Rico, even though PR is an American territory and is defended by that military, and their presence brings $$ to that area. Again, he has a right to these opinions, but I have always felt he was a poor fit for NYC, esp after 9/11.

As for his being a divisive figure in the clubhouse, we’ll just have to disagree on that. I hope you are right and he comes back to lead the Mets to a WS and I will gladly eat my crow. Have a great weekend!

  71. michael Says:

I’m not surprised that Fmartinez didn’t run after a pop up cause thats the culture of this METS team ever since they signed both carloses and rising star reyes. They brought this lay back, COCKY attitude with them. U don’t see Murphy or wright, church act like that. I’ve been saying all along and been saying the last 4 yrs, this LATIN influence is not a HEALTHY effect on wright and other players. At times, I think wright is AFRAID to speck up in the lockroom cause of the LATIN INFLUENCE (when he should have step up be the team leader, but he never turn out to be). yes , we all loved KROD, but didn’t he also said we were the team to be again this spring. (Again going back to what I said about these Latin players and COCKY ness they got) They think they are SO much better than other when they haven’t even won a thing YET. until they get a NEW manager and GM and change the CORE of the team, this group they have is not going to get it done in the clutch. (I’d still be a MEts fan and forever, but I can’t see they win with this bunch). Someone SHOULD kicked Fmartinez rear to remind him that we don’t do that here in Flushing and MLB.

  72. Joe Says:

BMF…..our pastor is actually Father Daniel Murphy at Saint Saviour’s in Brooklyn. While there are many questionable actions by him such as cronyism, spending of Parish money on unnecessary construction projects, etc., the comment about molesting boys was completely inappropriante and offensive.

  73. Mr. Met Says:

The comment about molesting boys, under no circumstances, was meant to single out an actual person. It was in poor taste, given there is a real Father Daniel Murphy. However, what is in even more questionable taste airing is your parish’s dirty laundry on a sports forum!

  74. Mr. Met Says:

    is airing, that is

Have just turned back from a fantastic vacation to Bangkok, stayed at Sunset Paradise in the northeast part which is less busy than south-central areas, great hotel and good beaches near Bangkok like at Koh Larn. We rented a minibike for only 400 baht per day and would drive around the general area. So many marvelous localises to dine, our favourite restaurant was Ahan thai Aroy which had the most fantastic view over the beach, the staff was rather nice and the food so delicious, we went for sunset drinks. My girlfriend and I had a supreme time in Bangkok and will be back for Christmas.
