Big Pelf Spooked in ‘Frisco
Did Big Pelf spot a mouse or something? Because it was bizarre how out of sorts he was on the mound.
It all started when he slipped and fell mid-delivery for the second time this season. That was random unto itself but the Big guy finished with:
• 1 balk that wasn’t called when he awkwardly stepped off the mound to refocus
• 1 mini-trip when he kicked the mound in frustration that almost caused another tumble
BMF loved seeing David Wright run over to settle the Pelf down but had to laugh as Wright attempted to “Pee-Wee Reese” Pelfrey by putting his arm around the young pitcher’s shoulder. It was a great effort albeit short lived as David quickly realized you can’t put your arm around a 6’7” giant!
BMF is taking this loss in stride. We won 3 of 4 in SF and got beat by Matt Cain. I know everyone is on all over hippie Tim Linceum’s jock - and rightly so - but make no mistake Matt Cain can be equally good. Shout out to Cain who went into second base HARD to prevent Tatis from turning a DP. BMF loves seeing the game played clean and gritty even if it’s against the Mets.

The only thing I had real beef with last night was that clown Steve Phillips who rocketed himself passed Miller, Morgan, and McCarver on BMF’s list of most hated announcers.
I’d almost rather listen to Suzyn Waldman and Sterling than Phillips… almost.
If you’re still blissfully unaware Stevie boy Phillips has been added to the ESPN crew. Therefore Sunday Night Baseball is now like watching a game with my 2 annoying Grandparents AND a creepy uncle. (y’know the kind of uncle that looks a little too long at the young women in the room)
BMF almost puked when I heard Steve Phillips preaching how the Mets should trade Carlos Beltran if they don’t win it all this year!!! WTF is he talking about??? And WTF does he know about winning it all???
Both Phillips and ESPN have some real balls to dis Beltran like that. But with this puppet Phillips I’m not sure if he actually believes what he says or if he’s just playing announcer - kinda like he used to played GM.
Props to Joe Morgan (who rarely gets props round here!) for putting Phillips in his place. When G’pa Joe pointed out that if you trade Beltran you’d have to replace all the HR, RBI, and gold glove defense that he provides Phillips seemed momentarily stumped – but that’s not really surprising to Met fans now is it?
Unfortunately the decision to rake Beltran over the coals was network endorsed since they immediately rolled a video package of Beltran’s non-slides from this year and even his strike 3 looking in ‘06. I’m disappointed in ESPN for stooping this low.
Phillips also blabbered on about how the Mets don’t have a “flawless” player to be their leader. He went on to define flawless as including such traits as: always consistent and never struggles at the plate.
I didn’t get it at first but once he cited Pedroia and Youkilis it all made sense – today’s Mets need guys like Mo Vaughn and Robbie Alomar to make them winners!
More props to Joe Morgan who made a point to tell Phillips “there is no such thing as a flawless player”.
Can someone please make Steve Phillips just GO AWAY!

As for turning the volume off and listening to the FAN to avoid these nimrods, I highly recommend it for others but BMF is a guy who likes to watch the way a network broadcasts a game.
Although if Bob Murphy (the one and ONLY “Murph”) were still around I might be tempted. Not so much with Ray Nagin or Wayne Hagin or whatever his name is…

Mojo Kitty rocks the batting helmet for luck!

May 18th, 2009 at 5:55 am
The comments about trading Jose Reyes were also offensive. Sounds like they ask Philly fans what the Mets should do to improve their team.
Truly awful broadcast. Worst kind of concern trolls.
May 18th, 2009 at 6:36 am
Don’t forget, Steve Phillips is the same guy who offered David Wright to the Blue Jays for Jose Cruz Jr as the 2002 trade deadline approached…
May 18th, 2009 at 7:20 am
Those guys literally put me to sleep. I fell asleep about 10 minutes into the some inning, don’t know, but I heard that whole discussion. And I had to close my eyes because they put the yellow shirt on-screen. I think it’s white grandpa that puts me to sleep.
So I don’t have anything useful to say about the game, except I saw the first (?) balk. You just don’t see that every day. Pelf better watch it or ESPN will put together a blooper reel of him on the mound with Benny Hill music.
May 18th, 2009 at 7:39 am
These things happen. One can say we were due for a loss. Who cares, though? This team is f–king ROLLING. I have not seen a Met club rock like this in years - these last few weeks have been 80’sesque. What a pleasure. It’s unreasonable to expectt this level of play all the time. If they’d shown just a fraction of this fire, they’d have multiple rings.
I’m not saying anything for fear of a jinx. I don’t want to upset the applecart. Let’s just say, Lippy hath nothing to complain about…
May 18th, 2009 at 7:54 am
The only good thing about an ESPN-broadcasted game is the earlier start from the Left Coast.
Miller’s difficulty in knowing who was playing LF was typical and Steve Phillips should simply be shown the door. It’s clear his sniping comes from his still bruised ego at being fired as Mets GM.
It’s too bad Pelf’s costly balks lost this game, especially with the suddenly silent bats. I was surprised Warthen didn’t get out there sooner to try to reset Mike’s CPU. Very strange since we’ve seen this before on Opening Day. Should he break out the mouth guard again.
On to LA to man-handle the Mannyless Dodgeballers.
May 18th, 2009 at 8:21 am
The biggest problem I had with the broadcast was that if we had Gary & Keith there, they would have criticized Manuel for the asinine Pagan for Murphy PH.
Manuel is a terrible manager, no better than Willie. Fatcessa ripped into him last night on channel 4 and will do so again this afternoon on WFAN. Its not too often that I totally agree with Fatcessa but he was spot on last night (he also doesn’t like how Church & Castro are in Manuel’s dog house).
May 18th, 2009 at 8:30 am
The biggest problem with the broadcast was Miller’s get up. Who at ESON let that guy go on the air with a yellow shirt and matching tie? He looked like a deranged chicken. That was without a doubt the most disgusting outfit I have ever seen…
May 18th, 2009 at 8:57 am
Good call Corey; terrible decision to PH for Murphy.
I had to listen to ESPN last night and I just about puked. They talked for 3 innings about leadership on the Mets.
May 18th, 2009 at 9:11 am
I didn’t watch the whole game - it was DH season finale and well, that pulls rank over Sunday Night Games (I was following on Gameday) - although I DID manage to catch the whole leadership rant. This is what I wrote in response: “SHUT UP!!! How much mileage can these ESPN buffoons get out of the whole “leadership” thing. Seriously, this was almost a f**king month ago. SHUT UP!!!”
May 18th, 2009 at 9:37 am
Steve Phillips - The man who converted Jose Reyes to a second baseman because of his bad moves (almost traded him too). Almost traded David Wright. Gave us Mo Vaughn (are we still paying for him?), Robbie Alomar, Bobby Bonilla. And now is criticizing the best fielding CF in the Majors. The guy is hitting .375. He probably would want to trade him for Big Papi, because he’s a leader! The only reason they went anywhere in 1999 and 2000 was because of Bobby Valentine. Remember their outfield - Benny Agbayani, Timo Perez, Jay Payton. ESP-NO fire Steve Phillips.
May 18th, 2009 at 9:54 am
I actually turned off the game because they drove me so crazy, especially Phillips. Relieved Morgan stood up for Carlos B., but he gives me a giant pain, too, talking like the Pope, and getting obsessed with the same play for three innings.
May 18th, 2009 at 10:02 am
I listen to the FAN, I don’t mind the delay and there is almost nothing that makes my blood boil more than listening to the two most idiotic announcers in sports make inane comments, not to mention “Bel-TRAN” etc. Tho I did appreciate BJake’s posting about Joe Morgan and the triple play threat last night, lol. What a bunch of numnuts.
Steve Phillips can kiss my ass. He should be disbarred or banned or whatever they do to completely incompetent GMs that threaten the sanctity of baseball with stupidity.
Pelf was a mess last night, but it happens. All told he only gave up 2 runs, could have been much worse. HATE being shut out, we left two many guys on, but you have to tip your hat to the Giants, they were fired up like crazy to win.
LET’S KILL THE DODGERS!!!
May 18th, 2009 at 10:15 am
Agreed .. I got so many texts from people asking why “Phillips can’t shut up?” .. ESPN and Fox are destroying or trying to destroy this game
May 18th, 2009 at 10:23 am
Age old question…Who’s worse to listen to…Buck/McCarver or Miller/Morgan???
I think Steve Phillips has tipped that scale…
I hate when ESPN takes two or three bad plays and does a paint brush generalization…criticizing of LosB’s two bad base running mistakes is one thing, but dude has made one bad throw this year and normally does a great job throwing, but ESPN criticizes his bad throws??? Good news is, whatever Phillips says, it’s usually wrong…so we’re looking good…
Any one heard what was wrong with Pelf??? It looked like every time he had to get set going into the wind up he was taking his first step on a typrope….It’s been a while scene Pelf has looked uncomfortable and I don’t remember any pitcher looking that bad…(Other than Armondo “Gas Can” Benitez).
May 18th, 2009 at 10:31 am
To throw gas on the fire, as much as I hated Steve Philips last night, he did put together a team in Queens that got to the World Series.
In addition, he did do those things mentioned above.
As BlondiesJake said to me on e-mail last night, “you can’t let the truth get in the way of a good story.”
May 18th, 2009 at 10:40 am
I guess since the Mets scored for Johan this time around, they had to leave somebody without any run support. It happened to be Pelf last night. Not sure why he was so hesitant last night. I wonder if he was trying something different and had to think about it. Still, only giving up 2 runs isn’t so bad. Johan gave up 4!
May 18th, 2009 at 10:55 am
Oh GEEZUS GroteFan, what kind of Met fan are you? Seriously dude, to give credit to Steve Phillips for the 1999/2000 runs is flawed, at best. For one - that production had more to do with Bobby V getting the best out of subpar players and a weak-ish NL (we won WC both years) - then were clearly not “built to win” in the WS when those flaws came out seven-fold against the Yanks. Not to mention, all those “key” players those years were mercenaries and we are still suffering from stupid-ass moves that Phillips made even back then. Bay for Reed anyone? Seriously, GFan I mean this in the sincerest way possible - take whatever Lippy’s taking. He’s enjoying this run, as should YOU. Boom. Where’s my whip?
May 18th, 2009 at 11:34 am
You Mets fans are all the same. You want to praise people when they do well and criticize them when they don’t. How will that get you noticed on a broadcast? IDIOTS!
If I was still GM, you better believe these guys who aren’t winners, like Beltran, Reyes and Wright would’ve been shipped out long ago and replaced by Dave Roberts, Orlando Cabrera and Greg Dobbs, because those guys proved they are better by being on championship teams.
And to rip me for my track record as GM is totally unfair. Six years is barely any time to make all the real moves I wanted to. And it’s not like after I left the team had to rebuild at all.
Heck, after back-to-back playoff seasons, we went 82-80 in 2001, 75-86 in 2002 and 66-95 in 2003 with Art Howe managing and Robbie Alomar, Mo Vaugh, Jeromy Burnitz and Roger Cedeno playing key roles. We were clearly about to turn the corner, I just didn’t get the chance to keep driving!
May 18th, 2009 at 11:46 am
LMAO StevePhillips. I stand corrected - GREAT job pal!
May 18th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
Question, if Redding is gonna start vs the Dodgers (AKA BJakes secret wet dream)…who’s gonna get dumped off the 25 man roster???
I see the only options are Figgy or Angel Pagan…now if it’s Figgy who gets dumped, why add him to the roster in the first place??? he hasn’t pitched once and now I think you have to worry about someone picking him off wavers again…I know Nelson isn’t a great pitcher…good to decent…but I’ll always love his story and his effort and hate to see how he’s always the guy good enough to make the roster but not good enough to keep…
May 18th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
USMF, why on earth is Redding starting vs the Dodgers my secret wet dream?
May 18th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
I meant that the Dodgers is your wet dream…It’s time to admit that you’ve lived in LA too long and are a Dodgers fan…Admit it Sissy Boy!
May 18th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Wait just one f’ing minute. BlondiesJake is a Dodgers fan??? WTF. And we should get rid of Beltran, if we could get a decent CF’er like Andruw Jones and a reliever who won’t poop all over himself every time he enters the game I’d be all for it!!!
MALIBU ROCKS DUDE
SURFS UP IN HERMOSA
I AIN’T GIVING YOU ANOTHER FIVE UNTIL YOU ARE ACTUALLY AT BLONDIES, jake.

let me tell you something about steve philips…he’s better shave the prison P***y off his face before johnny miller gets the wrong idea.. talk about a banana split.hiyooooooooooo
May 18th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
“I’d almost rather listen to Suzyn Waldman and Sterling than Phillips… almost.”
What’s wrong with you?! Stevie-Boy can’t be that bad, can he?! That 3-headed monstrosity they had out there last night can’t hold a candle to Waldman and the Skankee propaganda machine. When I first heard the now infamous Clemens call, I puked in my mouth. The only thing that could bring me to those depths is if ESPN actually showed Miller going down on Morgan during the commercials. To date they have had the decency to omit that from the broadcast.
May 18th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
The Yankee announcers are homers and they suck - to non-Yankee fans. Yankee fans probably love them, although I never talk to Yankee fans so I wouldn’t know for sure. The ESPN crew are “supposed” to be the cream of the crop but they suck. Miller looked like the freakin’ sun with that shirt on.
May 18th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
USMF, I’m not a Dodgers fan and haven’t gone soft since moving west (but the earthquake last night did scare the crap out of me). However, I want LA to make the playoffs so the Mets can play them and I can go to the games. As well, the Dodgers being interesting makes for good topics on my show, which I’ll be doing live from Chavez Ravine the next three nights.
WWMD, I’m no surfer dude, but a pasty-white, sports-obsessed dork who happens to live in the valley. And I was at Blondies three times on my just completed trip to NYC, so keep the fivers rolling.
LET’S GO METS!
I’M ROOTING FOR REDDING!
I LIKE THE WEATHER IN LA, NOT THE TEAMS!
May 18th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
I’d rather listen to Sterling/Waldman than Morgan/Miller/Philips or Buck/McCarver any day…although I haven’t heard the Spanks announcers call Mets games in a long time, so that could re-tip the scales again…
The ESPN and Fox guys are so under prepared and just ignorant about the teams they are covering that it’s sickening…
At least Waldman knows a lot about who she’s covering while she’s creaming herself anytime anything pro Yankee happens…Sterling’s voice is tolerable when NOT doing one of his cheesy caned HR calls…
The other guys voices are like nails on a chalkboard…
I didn’t mind Fox’s announcers this weekend…they’d just called the game and didn’t try to make themselves more important than the game…
It’s funny, if ya watch MLB network, they like to switch over to random games throughout the night…one night they switch to Spanks/Red Socks and watched Papi ground into a DBL Play…Kay was wetting himself over how great of a play the Spanks made. They switched back to MLB Studio and immediately the MLB host said “it was a nice play…NOT great…HA! Even MLB is calling out Spanks for being sucky homers…
So Jake…you said “(I) haven’t gone soft since moving west”… You’re saying you were that soft before moving to LA??? You got good seats at the Latrine??? Let us know and I’ll try to see ya on camera….
May 18th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
USMF, can’t say I wasn’t soft before I left NY but will say I’m tougher than most of the pathetic fans out here. As for the games tonight and tomorrow, I have so-so seats that probably won’t put me on camera.
May 18th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
BJake: according to those commercials, if you haven’t gone soft after four or more hours, you should see your physician, as this may be a sign of priapism!!!
May 18th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
The Mets have announced Carlos Delgado will undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone spur and repair a torn labrum in his hip tomorrow in New York.
May 18th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
Was Delgado the other man that broke up A-Rod’s marriage? Can it just be a coincidence they had the same torn labrum injury?
May 18th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Morgan can’t stand Phillips. Last Sunday night the same thing. Every comment Philips makes about strategy Morgan jumps in to say he is wrong. Kind of comical actually.
May 18th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
The only thing Steve Phillips knew how to do was kiss up to ownership so they fired Bobby Valentine. Not only was he a total bufoon as a GM, he somehow found a way to get management to fire BV and keep him.
May 18th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
so none of you guys mentioned the knife for Delgado?
May 20th, 2009 at 12:05 am
GroteFan, how is giving undeserved credit to Steve Phillips putting gas on the fire? The 2000 team that luckily never faced the Braves team in a flawed playoff system, was not as good as the 1999 team in any facet with exception to Mike Hampton, and yet still better than the Yankees were DOA after Game 1? I look at 1998-2001 as a bunch of missed opportunities with very flawed team of veterans with no young talent coming up at all and relying on FA that included overpaying for Appier that manifested to Mo Vaughn.
Also he gets away with messing around with his secretary yet somehow Bobby V. - who can actually say he is still wanted by some team albeit in the Far East- got fired first? This is what bothers me about the Mets. There was never complete overhaul. Expect it to be the same when Omar is looking for another manager as the Wilpons wait for his deal to run out.
Phillips is a Grade A dirt bag who used his kids as human shields from insults from fans, put Valentine under the bus whenever shot he could that included many times as just an ESPN analyst, and has he audacity to say he is the guy controlling why he is not a GM with the proverbial spending time with the family. To quote a Joe Posnanski commenter, the Sunday Telecasts have devolved into an informercial on why no team would dare hire Steve Phillips as a GM.

Hear about the latest in mw cheats? There’s a new book circulating that’s supposed to promise free cheats working or something. I am not sure it even works, but just in case it does… It’s here: http://ultimatemafiawarscheats.blogspot.com :/ Tell me if it does work though.
