Hello Pedro… Uh Yeah, It’s Omar…
BMF sez the time has come to make the call.
Make no mistake Pedro Martinez will not be a magic cure-all but he would definitely help.
Aside from Santana our starting ro’ is in shambles.
Pelf is hurting, Perez is awful, Maine is equally frustrating and Livan Hernandez has turned back into Livan Hernandez. Raise your hand if you’re surprised by that one!
A Martinez arrival can only bring good to these Mets. In addition to stabilizing a decomposing rotation he‘ll also serve as instant motivation by putting all Met starters on notice (I’m lookin’ at you Perez) that anything less than respectable will not be tolerated.
You can blame the lack of clutch hitting all you want but that’s deflecting attention from the real issue – the starting pitching is nowhere close to getting the job done.
Want more reasons to sign Pedro?
• He’s a leader and he’s tough – two things could use some more of on this club. Guys don’t slide guys don’t play very physical and they just don’t look like they’re gonna push anyone around out there. Peety’s swagger can help with that.
&bull Pedro will ALWAYS deflect media attention from everyone else just by being in uniform.
• He’s relatively cheap. The Wilpons have said they’ll spend more money and even if we have to guarantee 3+M WHO CARES?!?!? That’ll barely register on the Met payroll and if they don’t turn this season around they’ll lose that money on even more seats going unsold this summer.
• Unlike Ben Sheets Pedro won’t cost a compensatory draft pick if signed before June 1st.
• By inking Pedro we won’t part with any players like Fernando Martinez whom the Pad’s or Jays will certainly ask for in a trade for Peavy or Halladay.
• He likely won’t last a full season but I don’t think we need him to - the rotation needs help NOW. Peety will break down at some point but hopefully by that time Perez or Maine will have straightened out their issues or Neise will be ready to go.
Tim Redding or not, at this point I don’t understand why the Mets aren’t moving on this before he’s gone to ANA or somewhere else.
***
Meanwhile to make things worse the Mets really screwed the pooch on this Figueroa deal.
They DFA’d him hoping he’d pass thru waivers, which he did. Unfortunately the perceived disrespect shown by the Mets pissed him off so much that he refused an assignment to AAA meaning he’s a free to sign anywhere he likes.
Now was losing Figgy really worth Casey Fossum’s 1.3 scoreless innings en route to getting swept out of St Loo???
Question: Who kicks ass more than Rick Ankiel???
***
I will say this, the boys did a good job of not quitting in yesterday’s game. They kept hitting as highlighted by Church and Beltran bombs.
Church continues to prove he deserves to play every day and the more the Mets bench him for Sheffield the more we’re gonna be hearing about conspiracy theories of Met mgmt disliking him.
***
Yesterday Bud Selig announced to the AP that the Mets and yanks will re-evaluate their ticket prices.
Later in the day both teams denied it.
Ahhh, Selig - what a tight ship he runs.
***
BMF All-Star “BlondiesJake” is back on the east coast and we’re gonna be watching the Mets with him, his wife and baby at Blondies fri nite (79th st bet B’way & amsterdam).
Everyone is invited to swing thru and say hello.
In a cruel twist if fate BMF was offered 2 seats in an Excelsior Level Luxury Box fro friday’s game. I don;t even know what that means but I do know I can’t pass it up so BMF will be joining Jake at Blondies immed after Santana whips up on the Nats.

Mojo Kitty rocks the batting helmet for luck!

April 24th, 2009 at 5:45 am
BMF-were you drinking when you posted this?
What did Pedro do during the last 2 1/2 years to show you that he has anything left?
I hope this post is a goof.
Either way it’s a joke.
It’s time to move on.
April 24th, 2009 at 7:38 am
GF–
Pedro can’t be any worse than what the Mets currently put out there 4 out of 5 days.
April 24th, 2009 at 7:39 am
Let’s look at the bright side from yesterday:
1) They scored eight runs;
2) Parnell threw another good inning proving there is some talent in the minors;
3) We have 4 1/3 less of Livan Hernandez’s 180 innings to live through.
It ain’t all bad…just, unfortunately, mostly bad…
April 24th, 2009 at 7:52 am
This team needs to explode like a fire cracker
April 24th, 2009 at 8:00 am
The Mets lack a killer instinct
April 24th, 2009 at 8:02 am
The Mets need German players, we know those Germans make good stuff.
April 24th, 2009 at 8:03 am
The Mets need a tough disciplinarian in charge of the team.
April 24th, 2009 at 8:06 am
My friend Omar is a genius…and I know geniuses.
2009 Mets: Mission Accomplished!
April 24th, 2009 at 8:07 am
1. Even with these problems, I stand by my belief that Pedro would be no more reliable than what we already have slingin’ slop for us right now.
2. To throw away another $5MM or so at him would be the epitome of foolish…especially seeing what that kind of money could’ve gotten us over the winter.
3. I’ll always love Pedro…but I do NOT love him for this team. Especially not now.
The Mets really did their homework this winter. What wastes of money, and the idea that guys like Redding, Perez, etc. were PRIORITIES to bring back/into the fray — make it even more of a pathetic joke.
This franchise needs a plan in the worst way. If you think this year’s bad….wait til this winter when they really have no idea which way to go.
April 24th, 2009 at 8:08 am
I see nothsing long with Mets pitchlers.
April 24th, 2009 at 8:09 am
Hey Omar, I’m available.
April 24th, 2009 at 8:10 am
Let’s Go Me…crap, forget it. Who the F am I kidding?
April 24th, 2009 at 8:14 am
Hey, Wang!
What’s with the pictures? It’s a parking lot!
April 24th, 2009 at 8:21 am
Let’s see if the Mets can score some runs for Johan tonight.
April 24th, 2009 at 8:24 am
The Mets pitchers should be the ball
April 24th, 2009 at 8:25 am
I’m in the pool again-1000 swings righty/1000 swings lefty-gimme a week!
April 24th, 2009 at 8:27 am
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
April 24th, 2009 at 8:32 am
O-OOOOOHHHH….THEN YOOOU AIN’T GETTIN’ NO COOOKKKE!!
April 24th, 2009 at 8:33 am
Please spell my name correctly if you’re going to make fun of me.
Thanks.
April 24th, 2009 at 9:15 am
Are you guys on CRACK? Pedro is far from the answer to this team. OK, when I flipped out on not getting a stronger bat in the lineup, people ON THIS SITE (Ahem, ignorant sluts, LOL) said - Coop, you are crazy, the bullpen has been revamped, we have a strong starting rotation (I’d like to point out that I saw the Maine problem coming a country mile away), Livan will be a strong fifth starter (well, he does what he does - I still have faith in him, if you can believe it - yesterday I do not pin the loss on him entirely), etc etc. OK maybe no one on here thought Livan would be a strong 5th, but I still do. ANyhoo, it was the BULLPEN that gave up FOUR FREAKING RUNS in an inning, and the difference was those four runs. Let’s look at some positives - how many times would the team roll over and die in situations like yesterday and lose like 19-1. They fought back, that’s a plus. But it was too little too late.
Pedro is not the answer. War is not the answer. All they can do is be a better team. And I can’t believe that the last win was a Johan start and here we are AGAIN.
April 24th, 2009 at 9:16 am
PS Let’s go RANGERS
April 24th, 2009 at 9:33 am
If it weren’t for the lack of spelling errors, I might believe that the presence of Gregg Jefferies, Danny Noonan, et al. might indicate a return of the Lip.
April 24th, 2009 at 9:35 am
Anyone see the Flushing Flash this morning? They are already pushing to vote Castillo to the All-Star game. A little premature if you ask me. Also, pretty sad that he is the only player they are touting.
April 24th, 2009 at 9:39 am
It will be just another Cinderella story
psst… you can find a Pedro Met jersey at JC Penney in SYR for 2.50 bucks!!!!!!!
April 24th, 2009 at 9:41 am
DontgetBeat - well, if you want to wax intellectual…last year at this time, most Mets fans didn’t want to know the team and didn’t even vote Reyes or Wright in - and then had the nerve to get pissed that they hated their own team so much they wouldn’t vote them to the ASG.
But also bear in mind, we wanted Ryan church in there last year. Well, not me. LOL
As for me, i am ready to anoint Castillo MVP.
April 24th, 2009 at 9:47 am
No BMF at Blondie’s until after the game?
April 24th, 2009 at 9:58 am
The Mets need an Edge
April 24th, 2009 at 10:09 am
The Mets need Joesky the Met Brawler to kick some ass in the clubhouse and get these guys pumped up.
April 24th, 2009 at 10:09 am
That’s MILL-edge to you, DJ.
April 24th, 2009 at 10:17 am
DontGetBeat: Beltran is batting .404, Reyes .328, Church .330, Murphy .309, Santana’s era is 0.46. With this team of all-stars it’s not surprising we’re in first place………….
Er, nevermind.
April 24th, 2009 at 10:23 am
Make yo move!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 24th, 2009 at 10:24 am
OMG whoever is posting as these imposters is hilarious. Keep ‘em coming
Bill L - I am looking at the Mets much like I look at the free markets. Don’t f**k with them, everything will fall into place after a slight “correction.”
April 24th, 2009 at 10:42 am
I’m reading Ron Darling’s book, The Complete Game, and really enjoying it. There’s a section in the book called “Dealing with Adversity” where he talks about trying to get through a rough patch as a young player: “all I was thinking about was trying to show the Mets that they could count on me to make thirty-three or thirty four starts for them this season, and that I could bounce back from a rough outing. I wanted to win the ball game, make no mistake, but at just that moment I wanted more than anything to show that I belonged….These were my bottom lines: pitch well enough to give my team a chance to win, well enough to justify the faith my coaches and teammates had placed in me, and well enough to give our relievers a little bit of rest. After that the game could take care of itself–or not.
Unfortunately, Juan Samuel had his own agenda. I left a fastball out over the plate and Juan crushed it for a home run to start the game.”
It’s pretty good stuff– he talks about your “will” and things like that, but allows that you can’t always control the outcome. Here, despite all his desires, Samuel beat him. In another spot he writes about this same topic “That’s the great thing about pitching and hitting. Both sides are trying. Both sides are locked in. Both sides are bringing it. This was a World Series game, to be sure, but in one respect it was like any other game: you can do everything right and still get smacked around. or you can do everything wrong and somehow come out on top. That’s baseball….You’re going to step inside a moment that might be too big for you at first, but then maybe you’ll find a way to bring it down to size.” So, trying to apply this to the team’s poor start–perhaps these Mets will find away to overcome the other teams “agenda” and will find a way to “bring it down to size.” And hopefully we can start tonight with Mr. Santana.
April 24th, 2009 at 10:43 am
Four weeks from now …….A 2006-2007 NL all-star might be available. So what would the Mets be willing to give up for a healthy and pretty affordable Brad Penny? Wilmer Flores?
April 24th, 2009 at 10:45 am
lol @ Derek Jeter.
All due respect BMF, you know I *heart* you man, but f**k PEDRO!! We have a gazillion dollar team full of all star players—How about the guys we have now growing sprouting some cojones and acting like they give a damn? Or you know, throwing strikes? Catching a fly ball? Stealing a base? Hitting with RISP?
I think our rotation will be fine once it gets going, unless per usual the Mets lie about everyone’s health and we find out later Maine has a broken finger, Pelfrey’s ankle is sprained and Ollie has a concussion and David Wright is in a funk because actually he played all year with a twisted knee but didn’t want to complain.
But. . .I’m still not going to panic until Memorial Day—I need to conserve my strength!
April 24th, 2009 at 10:46 am
Coop: I like your “correction” analogy. Let’s just hope the team can stay “bullish” afterwards, for the rest of the season. P.s.–Go Rangers!!
April 24th, 2009 at 10:52 am
You needed me then, you still need me now. Good thing management spent $ on Redding, Perez, Hernandez and others.
April 24th, 2009 at 10:56 am
TDFKBL - couldn’t agree more, just surprised that they are pushing a guy that was a dead man walking coming into the season
April 24th, 2009 at 10:57 am
This is what you get for taking my name off the Stadium!
April 24th, 2009 at 11:00 am
BMF is clearly high after finding out about his box seats for tonight. I like Pedro and endorse the signing but it’s not a big deal.
Plenty of us expected Pelfrey to have growing pains, Maine to take some time to return to form, Oh Pea to be Oh Pea and Livan to be Livan. (If only Manny were being Manny in Flushing, but I digress).
The offense is what it is, a bunch of streaky hitters much better early in games than late. But if your starters are getting drilled before the 5th inning you’re in trouble irregardless.
Point being, forget all your troubles and come enjoy Johan on the tv screens at Blondies tonight. Lara, Max and I made it to nyc after a 5-hour delay in lax causing us to take a redeye, but we’re here now and will be partying with beers (on Matt the Met Fan), wings, cheese fries, pigs-n-blankets and more.
LET’S GO METS!
CAN’T WAIT FOR BLONDIES!
JOHAN WILL BEAT THE NATS AND ALL WILL BE GOOD FOR ONE NIGHT!
April 24th, 2009 at 11:00 am
Sorry to disagree with you FGMF but by pure definition of the word it is impossible for Ollie Perez to have a concussion…or maybe he lives in a constant concussed state…now I’m as confused as Ollie.
April 24th, 2009 at 11:07 am
2-5 pitchers have been atrocious..all of them! Its miserable to watch..they need to sweep the nationals at home and get some confidence. Johan will be great tonight, and then its hold your breath for the next 4, Maybe since ollie sucked last outing, he’ll able to get past that pesky 5th inning this time.
Get rid of sheffield(good thing they signed willie mo last week aka sheff jr.), and play murph and church.
This is the worst best hitting team I’ve ever seen. They need 5 hits an inning somehow to score a run, which doesn’t. Can somebody come up with a clutch hit in a close game?
LETS GO RANGERS! King Henrik!
April 24th, 2009 at 11:13 am
Why does Omar always get the Nationals’ sloppy seconds?
April 24th, 2009 at 11:13 am
JJ—I’m glad somebody got the joke! I think Ollie has had a concussion since Day 1. . .
From the Mayo clinic: “The signs and symptoms of a concussion can last for days, weeks or even longer…The two most common concussion symptoms are confusion and amnesia.”
I.e. what is this white orb in my hand, I forgot if I’m supposed to throw it in the air or roll it on the ground? Or eat it?
Not to mention. . .
* Memory or concentration problems
* Sensitivity to light and noise
* Sleep disturbances
* Irritability
* Depression
Ollie’s Brain:
wow, this place is big. . .I’m so sleepy. . .who turned on that big light in the sky?. . .it smells like hot dogs. . .which one is the batter again?. . .I’m so sleepy. . .whoa, trippy, there are two David Wrights at 3rd. . .man I wish I had some tamales. . .doo doo doo, Let’s go. . .Jets?. . .oh right, I’m supposed to throw this at that fat guy. . .which hand should I use?
April 24th, 2009 at 11:15 am
Who made off with the Mets 2-5 starters?
April 24th, 2009 at 11:16 am
Watching the Mets this week should be considered torture.
April 24th, 2009 at 11:18 am
The Mets lack a killer instinct. OK, back to Craigslist for me….
April 24th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Unlike me, the Mets can’t seem to take a punch.
April 24th, 2009 at 11:26 am
Gangstas on the bus, ladies stay behind!
Hey, WTF? Why are Johan and K-Rod the only guys on the damn bus?
April 24th, 2009 at 11:28 am
I need to get out there and show Carlos Beltran how to bowl the catcher over and stop running trying to “daintily” touch home plate as if were RuPaul running the bases!
April 24th, 2009 at 11:29 am
I like the 5-7 daily double at Aqueduct and the 5-7 ladies drink free happy hour at the bar where all the Hofstra chicks go.
April 24th, 2009 at 11:30 am
“Ju wanna get hurt-I can make ju get hurt-put the ribbon on - Carlos”!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 24th, 2009 at 11:32 am
Hey you know if you are going to fire Jerry Manuel, golly gee, I deserve to be Mets manager.
You can find me at the LI Ducks stadium and then after the game, I work the graveyard shift at the Farmingdale 7-11
April 24th, 2009 at 11:33 am
Carlos didn’t run into the catcher because he was looking out for my safety.
Give it a rest already, stupid mother f’ers.
April 24th, 2009 at 11:38 am
I think the Mets should look at themselves in the mirror.
That’s it, just look at yourself in the mirror…for several hours…remind yourself how good looking you are.
Then go out and date the most muscular blond “woman” you can find.
April 24th, 2009 at 11:40 am
Sure wish the bullpen view was obstructed back in ‘89….actually, I meant to do that.
April 24th, 2009 at 11:56 am
No matter what the SNY tapes show, the Mets are not guilty.
April 24th, 2009 at 11:58 am
Goodness gracious! Of all the dramatic things I have ever seen, the Mets this week ranks at the bottom of the list
April 24th, 2009 at 11:58 am
I love Pete and I wanted him to come back, but I have moved on and so should everyone else…Santana is the man now, he’s the leader and that’s the way it should be…
Pelf will be pitching better by end of May…
Maine is still trying to get the feel of it, he’ll be fine. The one thing that worries me about him is, after giving up too many BB’s the last game, he says he needs to be more fine…No, don’t be fine, challenge some body, learn to have someone hit your pitch.
Oh’Pea is what he is…somebody needs to get him some riddalyn or focusin or something…
Livan is who he is…he’s our number 5 starter. He’ll get hit hard once and a while…I thought the cards had a great approach against him yesterday…
Other than being unable to get that “Big” inning (Wright, I’m looking at you) the O is good…
Murph will be fine in the OF before the all-star break…
Pen has been great…the rest should fall into place. I just feel it’s gonna take a little bit of time…
April 24th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
I’m convinced that this is the same old mets we’ve seen for the last 3 yrs. the core got to change. beltran and delgado have to go. they need players like youkilis and pedroia type. I watching JAYS baseball last night, they have no names and yet play ten times harder than these mets.
April 24th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Pitching help is on the way…
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=4094898
BAYONNE, N.J. — On the pitcher’s mound, a 12-year-old girl from New Jersey is perfect.
Mackenzie Brown is the first girl in Bayonne Little League history to throw a perfect game. She retired all 18 boys she faced on Tuesday.
There are no official records of how many perfect games are thrown per season. Little League Baseball in Williamsport, Pa., estimates only 50 to 60 occur each year. No one knows how many have been thrown by girls.
Brown says she knew she had something special going in the fourth inning and just tried not to mess up.
She’ll get to throw out the first pitch at Citi Field on Saturday when the New York Mets host the Washington Nationals.
April 24th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
guys like beltran and delgado and some other latin players think they are better than phillies for the last 3 yrs.. then what happened! they thought they were better than netherland in WBC.. then what happened! this whole show off attitude got to stop. You dont win anything by talking, You have to prove it. Wright has to step up be the LEADER in the clubhouse. I think the latin influences messed up this team. I’ve been telling people 3 yrs early. people don’t believe it. These guys (latin) are just TOO cocky. they think they are better (talent wise). they need new players. period!!!!
April 24th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
Just in case you needed another reason to confirm Mets management is clueless, here’s a great quote after Selig opened his mouth and said Mets and yankees were thinking about changing ticket prices for seats…
The Mets have fewer premium seats near home plate and far lower prices. They are charging an average of $175-$495 for 1,567 seats in the Delta Club, which includes 20 rows between the dugouts.
“I know the Wilpons. They’re very sensitive about all this,” he added of the family that owns the Mets.
Mets spokesman David Newman said his team wouldn’t revisit what it is charging.
“Ticket prices start at $11. Interest in coming to games at Citi Field is strong. Sales of season tickets and ticket plans are up 8 percent over 2008. Sale of single game tickets for April and May games are double what they were for 2008,” he said in an e-mail.
April 24th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
michael - very enlightening post. You realize that the Netherlands didn’t beat “The Latins” in the WBC right? They beat the Dominican Republic. And the two guys you mentioned, Delgado and Beltran, are from Puerto Rico? And thus not on the team that lost. Finally, to be clear, are you suggesting that the team would be better off without Delgado, Beltran, Reyes and Santana? Really?!
April 24th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Oh by the way BMF:
“In a cruel twist if fate BMF was offered 2 seats in an Excelsior Level Luxury Box for friday’s game”
I hope that I am a victim of such cruelty a few times this year.
April 24th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
I love how people think they know what these players think a feel…I also love how it turns into a Latino thing…
Especially when LosD, LosB, Santana, Reyes, Castillo and K-Rod are all performing great…
Guys like Maine and Pelf and the big disappointments in the rotation and Wright and Church are the ones struggling to get the BIG RBIs (Wright seems to kill more rally’s than anyone I’ve seen)…Murph is struggling in the OF.
April 24th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Can’t believe I left K-Rod off the list of guys we apparently need to get rid of. Thanks USMF.
April 24th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Kill Whitey!
April 24th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
Kill ‘em twice!
April 24th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
With the old Braves it was “Spahn and Sain and pray for rain” Right now with the Mets its “Johan Santana and the 4 bananas.”
April 24th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
hey IrishMIKE, I stand by what I said. Didn’t delgado say “we were the better and should have won the division ” after the last 2 chokes. who was the one the just stood there took a 3strike when the bases were juiced…it was beltran!!! they went a wrong direction ever since they signed both carloses. They led a BAD influence in the lockeroom.
April 24th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
What you guys need, is to get juiced, I mean, enhanced.
April 24th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Worked for me…
April 24th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
What he means is, you need to increase your dosage.
April 24th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
Also worked for me…
April 24th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
I can hook you guys up.
April 24th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Yo, call me!
April 24th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
michael, good to know you’re standing by your opinion. It’s insane, but at least you’re standing by it.
April 24th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
If you need anything, just buzz my cuz and I’ll hook you up too!
April 24th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
297 and 352 from 2001-2004 (losing 95 and 91 games in 04 and 04) was the right direction…wow!
April 24th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
I’m glad I got hurt again….this team’s a buncha losers.
April 24th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
THE METS CANT be “championship” material by losing 4 in a row…
As of now all i can say is that there is no way we can compete with starting pitchers #2,3,4,and 5. all of them have to step it up. Perez is the biggest waste of $12 million in the world! I would rather feed the homeless.
EVEN MORE the bats have to step it up, how about scoring some runs? LOB count is way too high, that just means we got people who can hit, but no one produces in clutch. And if you cant step it up in clutch moments then you cant compete for championships.
I understand that its only the beginning of the season and 6-9 just means they are getting back in the grove of things, but this feels very familiar (last two seasons in september)
All in all i have a feeling the Mets will ruin it for us fans once again…at least they will have consistency in that.
April 24th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
oh and for the people saying that wright has to step it up and become leader
leaders dont have 6 RBI in 58 at-bats
April 24th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
And you all thought you had it bad when I was running the franchise.
April 24th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Now that I’m no longer running Cuba I’m available to help the rotation.
April 24th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
“Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle!”
April 24th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
IrishMike, the players you have mentioned have good statisitics, but we are not winning. I don’t want to speak for Michael, but maybe what he means, and what I definitely mean, is we have too many players worried about their stats and not about winnningn. I am going to go completely crazy here and suggest trading Reyes to get some grit on this team.. Manuel was right Reyes has not taken it to the next level, and I don’t see any indication he will. I can’t take his laughing in the dugout when wer’e down 4 runs every game.
Who would trade Reyes for Pedroia?
April 24th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
mookiemcmet, be careful lumping yourself in with or trying to speak for michael. He clearly has a problem with the latin players and says they are a bad influence. And yes, you are crazy suggesting they deal Reyes. He’s still a youngster and he’s not exactly terrible.
Blondies in 3 hours… can’t wait!
April 24th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
I am not saying it is a Latin thing, I would take Santana and Beltran on my team any day. There has not been a leader on this team for years, I find it hard to invest my time and emotion rooting for a team that doesn’t show any emotion. I want my team to at least appear to take the losses as hard as I do. I do not see that with this team and haven’t for some time. Someone either a manager or veteran player with some fire needs to be added quickly. I have seen Reyes for 5 years now, and I have seen no improvement the last 2. No he doesn’t suck,, but he does not have a great feel for the game ( bunting at wrong time, not stealing at right time, etc…). The core of this team needs to be shaken up.

mookie - what Jake said. Plus you are lost. Teams with enough players who produce good statistics will produce victories over time. The players’ motivation is irrelevant. Winning will be a byproduct of their statistical production. “Grit” is highly overrated if it doesn’t come along with ability.
Your trade idea is silly and a bad example. Sure Pedroia has “grit” but he was the AL MVP last year, leading the league in runs and hits. Sure I’d make that trade. But the Red Sox wouldn’t - because Pedroia has better stats than Reyes, not because he has more grit. Hey that midget Eckstein on the Cardinals supposedly has tons of grit - would you trade Reyes for him?

Will all of today’s celebrity posters be at
Blondies tonght? If so, the regulars might not get past the velvet ropes.
April 24th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
That’s not how Blondies rolls. The celebs will only be allowed in after the regulars are all accounted for.
April 24th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Mmmm, Blondies.

Matt, you going to the bar tonight? I’m going to need someone to hold down BJake so i can place a Steve Jeltz Phillies Onesie on his kid.
April 24th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
mookiemcmet, I understand the frustration. This team isn’t a bunch of screamers or bat throwers, so it’s tough to tell when they are fired up. Irregardless, I wouldn’t deal Reyes even if the Sox would deal Pedroia.

A Phanatic, I might be trading for Shane Victorino in my league… more trouble for your beloved Phillies
April 24th, 2009 at 4:38 pm

IrishMike , not only does Eckstein have grit he has 2 championship rings in the last 5 years. Ask the Yanks how all their statistacal superiority is working out for them. Pitching, defense, moving runners over, getting a man in from third w/ less 2 outs wins championships. The opposite of what you say is actually true, the teams with the best stats rarely wins championships. Tampa had no one in top 10 in hits, average, hr, rbi, wins, k’s, saves.
April 24th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Hawpe. Ugh. I’m going to hide in the kitchen.
April 24th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
Why the Kitchen ??
is that where the Hot Pockets are hidden?
April 24th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

mookiemet- News Flash: Tampa Lost!!
All kidding aside, I like the line about the Yanks, but grit alone does not win championships. Take away Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds, Carpenter, Glaus, and Anderson, and Eckstein would have zero rings.
You can’t take grit OVER big stat guys. You need grit to COMPLIMENT big stat guys. Just look at the last time our team won: Nails and Bachman epitomize the type of player you’re talking about, but if the guys behind them weren’t named Mex, Darryl, and Kid, they would have been the grittiest 3rd place team ever.
I’d like to continue making incredibly intelligent points and blessing you all with my wealth of analytical knowledge, but no one will read this anyway since I’m posting it a day late. Anyone who reads this, please pretend its yesterday.
