York City Sports

A New York Mets Blog for all fans of the New York Mets, especially former fans of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and residents of Brooklyn, written by Adam Salazar.

Dr. K and BMF Chillin’ at the “Mo’s Zone”!!!

Sometimes being a blogger really pays off and last nite was definitely one of those times!

BMF somehow found myself livin’ it up with Dwight Gooden (!) at the super cool “Mo’s Zone” and “Modells Clubhouse” inside CityField. (fyi CitiGroup had all naming rights revoked on BrooklynMetFan after the logo and patch debacles - so round here it’s CityField!)

.For a Met fan who grew up in the 80’s it doesn’t get any better than Doc Gooden so when Horizon Media contacted me asking for help covering a Modells/Gooden in-store event I was all over it.

I quickly compiled a list of elite Met bloggers to help get the word and the good people behind mysummerfamily, Metstradamus, Pick Me Up Some Mets and metsie and all-star photog Michael G Baron all came through!

All of a sudden Horizon tells me I’m invited aboard the Modells double decker bus to watch the game at CityField with Gooden. And I might even get a one-on-one interview with the Dr!

After a few minutes at the in-store and a few more taking pix with fans in front of the bus Doc, his wife, 2 sons and some beefy security piled on the bus and we were off to Queens. (Sorry to the rest of the blog-posse I DEF woulda brought you if I coulda : (

Meanwhile, Doc was super chill and even got on the mic to take questions from fans. The event was primarily a reward for Modells MVP members, which is basically their highest rolling loyal customers. We cruised through traffic and pulled up curbside at the rear of the stadium. While everyone else piled off the bus Jeremy from Horizon and I stayed behind and waited to talk to Gooden.

.Sure enough, just as Rich from Modells promised we had a chance to chat with the Good Dr! They ran video but it’ll be another day or so before I get it so I’ll hold off on transcribing the interview till then.

The funny thing is as Gooden was answering my questions I could barely concentrate on the answers because I kept thinking to myself, “HOLY CRAP I’m inerviewing freakin’ Dwight Gooden!!!!!!”

After Jeremy asked Doc a few questions from the bloggers not on the bus the moment I was really waiting for arrived…

Some of you may remember in Feb I got a tip about a bunch of Shea seats in a garbage pile at the demo site. I made a point to swing by and I was lucky enough to find a foreman willing to hand me an orange seat bottom through the fence.

Well that seat bottom just so happened to make the trip with me and I whipped it out along with a sharpie and asked Doc to sign it. He couldn’t have been more gracious and hooked my seat up with a Dwight Gooden signature – SICK!

From there we went inside the Modells Clubhouse which is located behind the RF fence and is awesome! FYI the Clubhouse is field level just below the red Modells sign while the Mo’s Zone is the small private section of seats just above the sign.

We were in the Clubhouse and I’m here to say it’s an awesome place for a group to watch a game! You’re practically standing on the warning track and in the bullpens as the only thing that separates you is a cyclone fence.

.There was tons of free food and beer and after signing autographs for a while Gooden sat down with his family and friends to eat and enjoy the game. Apparently Doc now resides in MD and I got a chance to meet his preacher who is a good friend and came along just for fun. I definitely got the vibe that Doc was surrounded by people that love him which as a fan is comforting to know.

Funny moment when Sheffield was warming up in RF before the game. Doc was standing with all of us in the Modells Clubhouse and walks up to the fence and says, “I’m gonna heckle him!”

Gooden happened to be standing next to me at this point so I said, “Hey Doc, does Sheffield know you’re here?” to which he responded “He knows I’m here tonite he doesn’t realize I’m right HERE!”

(To be honest I got the biggest kick out of calling him “Doc” and did so every chance I got!)

Everyone in the Modells Clubhouse quickly took up the cause and despite all the yelling, or perhaps because of it, Sheff never did look over. But it was a cool moment nonetheless.

Eventually Dwight said goodbye but not before I got a nice picture with him – will post when I get a copy. He made his way to a luxury box and word is he’ll be at yankee stadium tomorrow night too.

But rest assured Met fans Dwight told me himself that he considers himself a Met first and foremost.

Guess what Doc – so do we!

***

BMF shout out to all the super cool people I met/hung with last night. I was very impressed by not only how hard everyone on or affiliated with “Team Modells” worked but they all really seemed to care about results. You guys kicked ass - Rock on!

***

As for the game…

• We needed that win and we REALLY needed a good outing from Perez. I was happy Gen. Manuel lifted him after 6 cuz the kid’s confidence could use a 4 days of positive thinking

• Delgado CRUSHED that ball!

• Murphy’s bizarrely bad throw to Reyes seemed to catch the SS off guard. Murphy threw it across his body like an infielder when I though the should have just fired it home. Young Daniel’s defense has been an issue of late but I still think our best lineup is him in left and Castillo at second

• Gotta love Reyes’ speed causing Padre errors

• Jake Peavy is as tough as they come but we really don’t want to lose this series to the crappy Padres tonite

What an experience. One to tell your kids about. He seems really shy on air. I wonder if that was your impression. Can’t wait to read the transcript. Also, Peavy might be giving us a preview tonight of what’s to come — when he’s traded here!

  2. The Coop Says:

We would have more to worry about if a no-name pitcher with like a gazilion ERA was starting for the Padres. We’ll do fine against Peavy :) . Last night’s game was fun - even in the upper deck!!!

  3. KMac Says:

Wow, what a night BMF! and the Mets won!

For all of Ollie’s inconsistency, you gotta love his enthusiasm out there. He’s like a little kid playing ball in the sandlot. (Not that kids play ball in sandlots much anymore.) I know that contributes to his ups and downs, but it is somewhat refreshing to see.

  4. Mets Fan in Israel Says:

Sounds like a cool experience BMF!

I was up most of the night watching the game because MLB.TV still hasn’t gotten their heads out of their asses and the archived games are still shaky at best and the condensed games (last pitch of every at bat) is not available at all at this time.
At least the live games are pretty stable and when I hook up my laptop to my 32″ TV it’s not bad at all.
And finally, this year I can choose home or away TV feeds so I get to watch Gary, Keith and Ron for away games as well.

Still feels strange watching the Mets play home games at Ebbets/City/TARP.

Hopefully they will be able to capitalize on the quirky stuff in the field and have a real home field advantage later this season!

    Let’s Go Mets!

  5. Sam in North Cakalakey Says:

Since everyone else seems to be glazing over this, I’ll point it out. Ollie was great yesterday! Exactly what this team needed. When he has a bad outing this blog (all others as well) go nuts and start asking for Pedro or send the kid down to clear his head or Omar’s an idiot, etc., etc. So we should give credit we he does something positive and notching the first ever Met win in the house that Wright built is as positive as it gets.

    All hail!

  6. ProfessorReyes Says:

    Go Doc!!!!
I hope he’ll be around more often now that Sheff is here. Nothing in life has more woulda shoulda couldas than baseball and Doc is the prime example. But oh I wish he were playing now! Showed my son the mag cover from yesterday and told him (AGAIN) about the mile high billboard one of the first things you saw coming into the city, unthinkable now.

BMF I CAN’T BELIEVE you brought your seat for an autograph!! LOL What a maniac … and genius move!
You’d better get to work on that BMF:TNG.

I notice Perez got mucho macho on the mound after his battle in the batter’s box, I think he has something to prove there

Tonight… standing in for The Coop and Mr. E!! Rubber Game!

  7. ProfessorReyes Says:

Sam yes he was in very good form, at the same time the game didn’t have the feeling of a pitcher’s duel or real “dominance” but you’re right, way to go, Ollie, keep it up.

And way to go Mets Fan in Isreal keeping the faith.

  8. John in Athens Says:

    You are living the dream!

  9. darren Says:

Just happened to be standing next to that back entrance when Doc showed up… of course I waited until he was done sending a text before I asked… but he was down for the photo!.. http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j115/darrenmeenan/DSC01360.jpg

    Great game!

  10. Vinnie Says:

I never really read this blog but that Gooden write-up was awesome!
    Thanks for that.

  11. Jody Gerut Says:

    BMF,

That’s funny . . . “the crappy Padres”. Especially when you just climbed into the .500 crowd. And how do you justify keeping that butcher in left field? Tough to play the outfield with boxing gloves on. Lastly, since when did s**tty Field start getting full of Dodger fans? That place starts emptying out around the 7th and by the 8th half the fans are gone.

  12. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

Wow, BMF, what an experience!! Truly something to tell your grandkids.

For all you boys and girls out there, blogging DOES pay off!

So relieved to see Good Ollie on the mound, I still believe he has greatness along with nuttiness. And that 7th inning was CRAZY.

Maybe Jody Gerut should spend some time teaching his infield how to catch, throw, cover bases, and his bullpen how to throw strikes and his catcher how to catch. . .and if you have any free time when you’re done with that, please, do come back and heckle the people on this board. We’ll just wait here with baited breath for your incredibly original insights on the game.

  13. Jody Gerut Says:

Hey everybody, I’m Fort Greene Met Fan and I like to hang out at Blondies Jake when I can hitch a ride into the city. I believe there are Pod people and that Mets management doesn’t have the best interests of the “true” Mets fans in mind. I hope BMF will make friends with me. Ollie Perez is awesome, he could be a hall of famer!!!! I sometimes sniff glue, but not as much as I used to. Someone please hold me.

  14. ProfessorReyes Says:

Hey Jody with the pretty name keeping the bench cozie.
Joesky will love you for picking on girls with your misinformation.
No, don’t get up, I’m getting back to my life now & you can stay here trolling other teams’ boards.

  15. dykstraw Says:

lol jody is a girl’s name

good job BMF. a bunch of us got hooked up with awesome field seats thanks to crazymetgirl and we thought we were all cool and then you come around and one-up us.

  16. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

That is the best you can come up with?? I didn’t know Jody Gerut was 11 years old. What’s next, I’m rubber you’re glue?

  17. Sam in North Cakalakey Says:

    Jody = Lippy?!

  18. BlondiesJake Says:

Jody, feel free to put your money where your mouth is. If you think the crappy Padres will be better than the Mets, how about $5 for every game difference in the final standings? I figure I could make good use of $100 when the Mets win 90 and the Padres win 70. You can reach me anytime at srjakajts@yahoo.com

    LET’S GO METS!
BRING ON PEAVY AND THE CRAPPY PADRES!
    I’M WAITING JODY!

  19. USMF Says:

“I sometimes sniff glue” HA….HA….HA….good one loser…just another 30 year old virgin living in his Moms basement… I really hope you’re jerking off real hard, ya got a couple off blog readers in NY to respond to idiotic statements…great job, I’m sure it’s the highlight to your otherwise worthless life…

Go ahead and make your predictable lame ass response…I’m sure everyone on SD will be impressed…but what ever you do, it’s not worth any off our time…you already are boring me….

  20. The Coop Says:

Am I the only one who thinks Jake has an obsession with $5? Kinda like that kid in Better Off Dead - I want my TWO DOLLARS!!!

  21. The Coop Says:

And ProfReyes/Wynd, you are welcome! I had another chance to go to the game tonight but I am SO BEAT from this week - it was absolute craziness. Opening Night, Mets Dinner then last night’s game. Insanity, I tells ya. Somehow staying home with the kitties, watching Golden Girls and checking the Mets score sounds good enough for me!!! Enjoy the seats!

  22. Sanchez Says:

Doc Gooden in the MoZone is great

Doc Gooden in City Field is awesome

Doc Gooden declaring his Met-ness is priceless!!!!

    yankees SUCK

  23. LetsGoMetsGo Says:

  24. BlondiesJake Says:
