It’s Officially Pedro Season
Hang onto your hats folks cuz the Pedro Martinez chatter is about to reach a crescendo.
I hope you got a chance to catch the Dominican Republic vs the Netherlands WBC game last night because it was a fantastic contest that saw the Netherlands(?!?) roar back to win it with 2 runs in the bottom of the 11th!
But most importantly Pedro Martinez looked great firing 3 perfect innings.
As recently as yesterday BMF decided that passing on Pedro was the prudent move for the Mets but after seeing him pitch this well in hos second consecutive WBC outing I’m back to feeling very torn about the situation.
First off nobody in Mets camp has come close to earning the 5th spot in the rotation. Granted Tim Redding is yet to see live action but it’s hard to feel comfortable with a guy who hasn’t recorded a single out.
Garcia is a disaster, Livan is a 5 ERA waiting to happen and Niese is still too green… which bring us back to our old friend Pedro Martinez.
The truth is he’s pitching better than anyone we’ve got right now – and that includes ALL of our starters. Granted this was the Netherlands but John Maine didn’t exactly face the ’27 yankees yesterday en route to allowing 5 runs in 3IP.
But we also have to take into account that Pedro in the warm weather of the WBC games is much more comfortable than throwing in Flushing on a cold April evening… then again as our 5th starter he won’t be asked to take the ball very often before the weather improves.
Look we all know Peety won’t make 30+ starts I don’t think we’d need him to if he’s our number 5 guy. A couple of Pedro DL trips are easily covered by Redding, Livan, Niese and possibly Bobby Parnell.
So if Pedro will accept an incentive laden deal BMF is back in the camp of “Let’s sign Pedro”!
If he holds us up for 7 or 8M guaranteed then we pass but I gotta believe Pedro feels like there’s unfinished business in Queens and will likely give us a break on the contract because of it.
As for Duaner Sanchez – later bro, I guess you never should’ve gone to the club that night – oops I mean never should’ve gone “looking for something to eat” at 2AM!
Now let’s take that 1.5M savings and apply it to a deal for Pedro.

Mojo Kitty rocks the batting helmet for luck!

How about those Dutch!! So how soon does Reyes come back to ST?
You’ve got to think the Pedro rates his stock even higher now.

When are you going to change the logo on this site to a bottle of syrup? It would be perfect for a website that specializes on waffling. For God sakes BMF, take a stand on a subject, just once, and your readers will have more respect for you. I’ll send you a crisp brand new $5 bill if you pick an issue, pick a side, and stick to it.
Keep Willie, Fire Willie, Mets stink, Mets are going to the world series, Keep Ollie, dump Ollie, Ollie’s driving me nuts.
I stopped coming to this site for intelligent Mets talk a long time ago, now I am here for the comedy.
March 11th, 2009 at 8:20 am
great game last night, but if you saw it you realized the netherlands had no one other than simons who played above A- ball.. pedro is not going to be any better than he has been the last few years, his body is shot. Please don’t let 5 innings against the netherlands cloud what you have seen up close and personal the last couple of years. Likewise don’t write off redding after 1 inning of spring training, he has a major league track record. Let’s not panic yet, plenty of time for that to come.
March 11th, 2009 at 8:37 am
Just wanted to tell you guys a funny quote from ST yesterday:
My dad: “I wanna see you in the All-Star Game this year, man!”
Daniel Murphy, deadpan: “How about a World Series?”
Every day I see Daniel signing autographs for EVERYone, he is class.
Also, on the backfields, heard Ike Davis yelling to Wilmer Flores “You’re SEVENTEEN, pick up the damn balls!”
Rocky Cherry is a character - always has a comment for everyone - coming out to the bus, you can see he has these weird black ostrich-leather shoes on. Someone yells “Nice boots, Rocky!” - Rocky smiles and pulls up his pant leg to show us his crazy flashy white&black cowboy boots!
Caught FMart doing his 80 swings on the backfields and he was very happy & friendly.
Pelf was throwing yesterday but more of a long-toss kind of thing. He seemed to be okay…? I met someone who talked to Pelf on Sunday night, and Pelf said he felt fine.
Santana being a goofball as usual yesterday at drills, holding up some baseballs and yelling at Dan Warthen: “These pelotas are awful! These pelotas are no good! I’m going to give them away!” (eyes fans for a place to throw)

Mrs Butterworth, that’s one funny post. Of course, BMF is doing what most of us do, which is change our minds constantly based on new evidence. I’ve been a fan of signing Pedro all along, so you can send the $5 to me.
Btw, ESPN says a source says the Mets will not consider signing him, so I guess we’re wasting our time thinking about it. But then again, there have been plenty of times ESPN has had to reverse field on a story, so who knows. Of course, Mrs Butterworth has never changed her mind about anything ever.
LET’S GO METS!
SIGN PEDRO!
I LIKE PANCAKES!
March 11th, 2009 at 8:43 am
Stop with the Pedro crap already, please….
1. Everyone and their mother starts reading into comments by Met officials lately, and starts analyzing them for half-truths or hidden meanings, like it were an episode of The Sopranos.
If Pedro Martinez is looking for a guarantee of upwards of $6MM or so — keep in mind, Smoltz is getting $5.5MM upfront from the Sox (and is set to have a chance to make another $5MM or so in incentives)…..and from what we’d read from Tom Verducci, Pedro turned down a lucrative 1-year deal ($7MM) from an AL team earlier on in the winter.
Newsflash: he’s looking for a good chunk of change. And the $1.5MM they saved on Sanchez means bupkis in the grand scheme of signing Pedro.
Maybe if they cut Garcia, and allocate more of the incentives they thought he’d make down the road…….that’s the only possible way Pedro even enters the fray.
2. Let’s put things into perspective: Pedro has impressed against THE NETHERLANDS.
Great, they knocked off DR…they’re a fun little story so far….this is not a good lineup.
Petey is looking for significant (for a #5, anyway) guaranteed money + incentives.
If someone thinks they can sign Pedro for Tim Redding money + incentives, then they’re not really being honest with themselves.
And the fact that he’s likely a number 5-guy, who will again be relied upon to be more in a rotation like the Mets’ — while having been titted around good and hard last year — doesn’t bode well for that kind of financial commitment.
Turn the page on Pedro.

I always preferred Log Cabin, but Mrs Buttersworth definitely makes a point…

March 11th, 2009 at 9:22 am
Mrs. Butterworth, I could not agree more. Blondies Jake, its not like we’re saying NO ONE here has ever changed their mind, but BMF seems to change it more often than any other person I know… “Ollie is a stud, once he finds his stuff hes going to be lights out”, “Ollie is a free agent, BMF sez let some other team handle him, hes been too inconsistent”, “BMF thinks we should sign free agent Ollie Perez” “Sanchez will be back and better than ever”, “BMF is glad Sanchez was dropped” and so on…
Its not like BMF says something at the beginning of the season and then a few months later says, well, after seeing this from him, I made a mistake and he has to go. Usually its I love him today, and the next day its BMF has been wanting him to go for a long time now.
Pedro is not coming back, I’d rather have a rookie take the 5th spot than an aging vet. Does anyone think that Pedro could be using all he has now and come April he’ll be spent?
BMF, I love the site, but I gotta agree with Mrs. B on this one.
Lets Go Mets!
26 Days Till Opening Day!
Shea Stadium Forever!
March 11th, 2009 at 9:24 am
Like I’ve said all along………..SIGN PEDRO!!
I guarantee Pedro has a good year for someone in MLB. I just hope it’s not the Phils or the Phish because that could get ugly!!
Also, who gives a crap if a SP is #5 or #1. When he is on the mound every fifth day the SP is the SP. The only time it matters is when the skip sets the rotation on Opening Day or dare I say it….prior to the playoffs. Otherwise, #5 is just as important as #1 !!! Anyone who thinks we can manage with a poor to mediocre guy in the ‘5th’ pitchers spot is deluding himself.
SIGN PEDRO ALREADY!!
Also, do you think Reyes is getting sick and tired of monumental collapses by whichever team’s jersey he happens to be wearing?
March 11th, 2009 at 9:57 am
I am a huge Pedro fan so I am biased. If Livan Hernandez has recoved his velocity as I read somewhere then they don’t need Pedro. If Pedro wants 5 mil guaranteed, then no Pedro, but if Livan’s velocity is the same as last year and it looks like Garcia is clearly not ready and Neise is too Green and Redding is..well… Redding, then I think Pedro deserves a serious look especially if he has recovered his arm slot (control) and enough velocity (91-92) to make his slow stuff more effective.
March 11th, 2009 at 10:18 am
F Pedro. Coop has not waffled on this all along. L’eggo my eggo!!!
March 11th, 2009 at 10:33 am
So can we say about Pedro’s outing that he “Passed the Dutchies on the Right hand side”??
March 11th, 2009 at 10:37 am
I’m not getting impressed about Pete shutting down the Netherlands…I’m impressed with Petes location and control, especially with his change up along with his other off speed pitches…He’s had a ton of movement with all his pitches…he’s throwing, not aiming like he was last season…his mechanics look 100x better this year than last…he looks determined and focused…
I’m a admitted Pedro fan, so I’m biased…but I was ready to move on, but can’t seeing how we look in the rotation…
If Garcia was looking decent, then I’d pass on Pete…But Freddy looks to be a long way off…
Livan should only be a AAA option, He can eat up innings, but like B-Jake says, everything else is smoke and mirrors…
Redding may be OK, he’s from Crapchester so i kinda have to root for him, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be ready for the start of the season…
looking at the schedule, we’ll need five guys ready to go from the start…especially now with (decreasing) Santana’s arm setting him back… Maine being behind and Pelf having leg issues…
I wish the Dom didn’t get emulated so early…if they made it too the next round, it’ll give us a chance to see more of Pete pitch with an increasing work load…and it’ll also give us time to see how our current mix of guys progress…
And for those how say “Pete was only pitching against the Netherlands…” My response is -Yeah, and he kicked their Asses!
March 11th, 2009 at 10:40 am
BMF, change your mind all you want, they’re your opinions and your blog.
March 11th, 2009 at 10:40 am
I say go after a Japanese pitcher, those guys pitch like 200 innings in 26 games already.
These island-type pitchers are starting to look wimpy and soft to me, I say get some hard as nails Japanese guy to come in and do it like a man. They think anything above a 3.0 is just LAZY.
Best wishes, Pedro, seriously, your awesome, but byebye unless you know thyself and where you belong in a roster.
March 11th, 2009 at 10:41 am
pleeeeeeeeeze. pedro is done. i don’t care what he thinks he owes the folks in Queens. what matters is what he can do throughout a season. not one game in world baseball land. we have had enough senior citizens on the New York Mets. And, by the way, I was at the Spring Training game in which Sanchez pitched his last game for the Mets. Getting rid of him is one of Omar’s smartest moves.
March 11th, 2009 at 10:53 am
oh, and i forgot to add——the most impressive player i saw at spring training was Kielty. I asked HoJo twice who was playing left field. Murphy? Both times he waffled. His answer: “He can hit.”
March 11th, 2009 at 11:03 am
Chances are, Pedro could’ve dominated Chico’s Bail Bonds too — doesn’t mean they’re any good.
March 11th, 2009 at 11:13 am
Jerseysufferer, are you sure you are not me? LOL (lifelong Jersey girl in the howse - although I crossed the river a few months ago). Anyway, yes, Pedro doesn’t owe us a damn thing - he thinks HE owes himself a huge payday because he decided he’s in the mood to pitch. Pedro is Al Leiter on a good day - remember whenever Leiter would not be in the mood to pitch? He’s be out by the 5th inning. All we are saying is give NIESE a chance!
March 11th, 2009 at 11:23 am
^ In a nutshell…..The Coop just knocked one out of the park.
In the words of the immortal Ralph McPherran Kiner…….”it is going, going, sheeeee is gonnnne goodbye!”
March 11th, 2009 at 11:30 am
Kmac no need to kiss BMF’s ass
March 11th, 2009 at 11:40 am
Nuts, I love your Chico’s Bail Bonds reference. Hee hee.
March 11th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
Mrs. Butterworth: Funny posts, but I don’t think this is an indefensible flip-flop by BMF on Pedro–he is reevaluating in light of new information. Isn’t that the prudent thing to do? Look at what he says: ” As recently as yesterday BMF decided that passing on Pedro was the prudent move for the Mets but after seeing him pitch this well in his second consecutive WBC outing I’m back to feeling very torn about the situation.” He is reviewing the situation because a) Pedro continues to pitch well and b) no other fifth starter candidate does and c) Mets have some nagging pitching injuries at the moment. Sounds reasonable to me to be at least thinking about the merits of bringing Pete back on board.
Emerson said, “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” I’d rather have waffles than mule any day.
Besides, just as a practical matter, you need to be a waffler to run a successful blog. If you just repeated yourself (a la “Lippy” and his continued rants against Omar, no disrespect intended if you’re out there Lip) people would get tired of visiting. There would be nothing to argue about. BMF has to “put the ball in play” with an intriguing/provocative/controversial statement to prompt the lively discussion that keeps a blog interesting and relevant.
March 11th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
Let the kids play! If Niese can’t cut it we have plenty of depth or Omar can get plenty of livian h level starters mid season. Love Pedro, but don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
March 11th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Ps BMF is a waffler, but we love him anyway. Or maybe just a Libra…
March 11th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
You can question Pete’s ability to stay healthy, you can question his ability to pitch five+ quality innings…you can even question his ability to get MLB hitters out…but there’s no way you can question Pete’s desire to win and his pride…
Pete has a lot of respect for the Wilpons, Omar and the Mets. Pete loved pitching in NY and loved Met fan…Pete has a ton of pride and reading his comments over the past four years…I believe he wanted to win a WS in Queens and feels he hasn’t been able to deliver that and wants another chance to finish what he started…I think he really feels that he let us fans and himself down by getting injured and not being himself mentally and physically…
March 11th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
I’m a Libra, but I prefer Freedom Toast.
March 11th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
USMF: I’m with you on Pete’s desire and pride. Additionally, Pete is coming off of rotator cuff surgery, and even though it’s been two seasons, it sometimes takes that long to get it back together, for all the scar tissue to pop, etc. No one thought he would be ready for the end of 07, but he pitched well. The fact that last year was not good doesn’t mean that he necessarily has nothing left. He’s not that old, and he has had to learn to pitch with his new, more human, skill set. I think that he could be surprisingly good this year, if given the chance. As far as the money situation goes, I have no idea what he’s worth, or what the Wilpons are willing or even able to pay. They seem to be acting somewhat frugally these days. There remain lots of unsold seats at City and they are doing cost cutting things like cutting Sanchez to save a few bucks. The article in today’s Post is interesting cos it looks like Jerry was not expecting Omar to cut Sanchez loose..
March 11th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Coop: “Give Niese a chance” is a classic!
March 11th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
This just in, BMF said the Mets should NOT sign Pedro, and need to re-hire Willie Randolph.
March 11th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
LMAO@ Mrs Butterworth!!!
March 11th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
I heard Jerry interviewed on MLB podcast yesterday and he definitely was talking up Duaner as part of the bullpen. If he knew he sure didn’t show it.
March 11th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Where is Jose Lima when you need him for the 5th spot? Oh wait, I meant Jeremi Gonzales.
March 11th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
Thanks for Niese - http://mysummerfamily.blogspot.com/2009/03/all-we-are-sayyyyy-ingis-give.html
March 11th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
well, if I can surmise anything from the general tone and karma of Spring Training during the few days i was there, I’d say that Omar and HoJo were clearly running the show. Manual was not seen by anyone I talked to and he was anything but a public figure. I realize that you can’t make anything substantial out of this; i’m just throwing it into the mix.
Note to The Coop: Jersey dames know what is in front of them. As you know, propaganda and b.s. is not a big seller on this side of the river. You can come home now.
March 11th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
FGMF - oh wait, I mean Dave Williams. And what about that Oliver Perez guy? Hee hee!
March 11th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Reasonable Met Fan, you owe me $5 for copying my 3-line signoff.
LET’S GO METS!
LET BMF WAFFLE IT MAKES IT INTERESTING, LIKE TODAY!

March 11th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
I’m super! Thanks for asking…
March 11th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
Listen up Butterneck -
BMF is here to give it to you straight and Ima tell you exactly what i think with zero ulterior motives (well except for Big Pelf and Gen Manuel that is!)
Let it be known BMF ain’t an episode of “Loudmouths” where the object is to pick a position and blindly defend it for the noble effort of creating programming.
Instead BMF follows the Mets on a daily basis and constantly re-evaluates what I think is best for our boys. Which, correct me if I’m wrong, is kinda the way being a sports fan works!!!
I dunno perhaps you’re more used to/comfortable with writers that refuse to consider the alternative but that schtick always rings pretty empty to me.
Maybe you’re the type of fan that never deviates from an opinion of your own. That’s fine by me but it’s simply not the manner in which BMF views this great game of baseball
For instance I used to not want Pedro - but I ALWAYS said I was torn because my heart wanted him back. I also USED to think Freddy Garcia would do a good job for us - maybe I should stick to that opinion???
I NEVER wanted Livan Hernandez but once we signed him I tried to look at the bright side that could eat innings - but I still think he’s awful.
And for the record BMF was the FIRST place in Metland that officially called for Willie’s head. When they extended him I tried to be a team player and lend my support but accusing me of “waffling” on Willie Randolph exposes yourself as a new jack BMF’er who knows not of what she speaks.
And how might i ask is saying Ollie is “already driving me nuts” waffling??!!?? I’m happy to hear that made you laugh because it was a JOKE!!!
Meanwhile I did my own amateur scouting of Peety and after watching the life on his fastball in the WBC I’m now convinced he’s worth an INCENTIVE LADEN DEAL
Because as the slogan sez BMF is an “Authentic Fansite” which means I like to think this site is a gauge of where the average Met fan’s head is on a daily basis
OF COURSE I CHANGE MY MIND YOU FOOL - IT’S BASEBALL FOR CRYIN’ OUT !!!!!!!!!
March 11th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Looks like someone has his Tatis signed panties in a bunch.
March 11th, 2009 at 6:27 pm

GO BMF!

“I’m super!” hahahaaa @ Coop, I can hear the voice in my head.
March 11th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Nutz please see Bigger Longer Uncut for the Big Gay Al song…. Joesky always eerily makes sense.
But I was creeped out when you add the inches mark to the 11….
March 12th, 2009 at 7:22 am
LOL — that’s a subliminal creep somewhere in the depths of your mind, then Professor.
That’s merely a quotation mark!
March 12th, 2009 at 9:10 am
Actually, I am not new to this site, but I am overwhelmed with glee that you responded to my post. I wet my Mackey Sasser shorts when I saw this.
“Because as the slogan sez BMF is an “Authentic Fansite” which means I like to think this site is a gauge of where the average Met fan’s head is on a daily basis”
Then I wish you nothing but glass belly buttons.
March 12th, 2009 at 9:11 am
PS, direct your scorn at me all you want sir, but you will find that more people agreed with me than with you….
Leggo my Eggo!
