BMF Open Letter to Scott Boras
Dude - let’s go with Oliver Perez already!
Can you please just let the kid take 33M of Wilpon money so we can all move on with our lives???
It’s freakin’ Super Bowl week and there are still tons of free agents, teams and fans stuck in neutral thanks to you and your shenanigans.
As soon as Ollie signs, Sheets will fall then Hudson and Manny too which will finally signify the merciful end of the 2009 Hot Stove season. It can’t come soon enough cuz waiting for these free agent dominos to fall is like sitting in traffic and BMF is antsy to start talking about spring training.
Quite frankly I’ll take any combination of the above mentioned four. I don’t even care which players anymore I just want to know who’s on my team.
I mean what exactly is the issue at this point? Can you not accept the fact that there are no mega-deals out there?
Does an extra 1.5M on Perez’s contract really matter in the long run? Or has it become more about stroking your own gigantic ego by keeping your name on everyone’s lips as long as possible?
Sorry Scott, but it looks like you’re gonna have to chalk it up to a “bad” off-season because Perez “only” got 33M and Manny “only” got 42M. My heart bleeds for you.
Look, BMF ain’t no “super agent” but the way I see it, if Omar jumps on Sheets the bottom instantly falls out of the Perez market.
Everyone knows Ollie to the Mets is the right fit so can you please stop standing in the way and let this deal get done.
thank you
the BMF

Mojo Kitty rocks the batting helmet for luck!

Is this what we are reduced to? Begging for Oliver Perez?
This is why we’re the little brother. I’d rather drink from a Jet fans cup than beg for Oliver Perez.

CAPSLOCK=DISABILITY ACCOMODATION
BMF, AS A METS’ FAN SINCE ‘62, WHO GREW UP IN BAY RIDGE & ATTENDED HIS FIRST MLB GAME IN EBBETTS FIELD @ AGE 6, I MUST SAY I AGREE WITH YOUR SENTIMENT; BUT NOT YOUR PREMISE, I DOUBT BORAS IS ANY KIND OF BASEBALL FAN, HIS PURPOSE IS PROPLAGATING HIS CLIENT BASE & INDIV CONTRASCTS ARE A SECONDARY CONSIDERATION. BT DEFINITION, HE’S EGOCENTRIC TO THE POINT OF NOT CARING ABOUT FAN OPINION OR CLIENT FULFILLMENT. I PERSONALLY HAVE A SNEAKY SUSPICION THAT THE OMAR/BORAS NEGOTIATIONS ARE USING PEREZ AS A SMOKESCREEN FOR A POSSIBLE MANNY ACQUISITION, THUS THE RECENT ‘LEAKS’ OF MANNY’S NAME FROM JEFF & D.WRIGHT. SUDDENLY THE NAME NOT MENTIONED OR BROACHED BY NUM RELATED SPOKESPEOPLE HAS GONE FROM “NO COMMENT” TO “LET ME EXPLAIN” BY KEEPING IT ALL SURREPTICIOUS & IN REALM IOF “NEVER GONNA HAPPEN” A SUDDEN DEAL CAN ONLY COME AS A BIG + FOR NYM FANS & SURGE IN TICKET SALES WITH REKINDLED HOPES WHILE CATCHING COMPETITORS TOO LATE TO RESPOND IN KIND WITH LITTLE AVAILABLE FUNDS OR TALENT TO MATCH. DOES ANYONE ACTUALLY BELIEVE OMAR DOESN’T WANT MANNY? ADMITTING TO DESIRE & FALLING SHORT IS A ANOTHER ‘COLLAPSE’ SUPRISING EVERYONE WITH A DONE DEAL IS POTENTIAL COLLAPSE AMNESIA. I FOR ONE BELIEVE THE LONGER PEREZ IS NOT DONE, THE LONGER THE EXCUSE FOR TALKING MANNY IS KEPT SUBTLE.
January 26th, 2009 at 9:52 am
How about Torre spilling it? A-Fraud. I love it. I don;t even care what the Mets do - I’ve already written their chances off - unless there is some serious addition - so long as the stars align and the curse of A-Fraud continues. I am going to laugh my arse off is the Skanks don’t win a WS. Making it isn’t even enough - they need to win the WS or it’s a failure. I hope Girardi blows it for them.
January 26th, 2009 at 10:13 am
Back to the Mets— honestly, if I were constantly in the thick of negotiations like Boras is, it would change my fan-ness, might even deplete it altogether.
Also Boras, don’t think Omar will forget that Ollie was the only arbitration winner last year.
January 26th, 2009 at 10:24 am
Lip, sorry, I have to disagree with you. As a Met fan, I need more than the Yankees losing to satisfy me. All Met fans should want more than that. Being a Met fan shouldn’t mean settling for less, that’s why we shouldn’t be begging for mediocre pitchers.
January 26th, 2009 at 10:30 am
I agree with the begging comment Jim. It looks like Redding is #5 no matter what happens. So at this time is Neise that much of a downgrade from Perez? Signing Perez or not isn’t going to be the main issue this year. I believe scoring runs will be the issue, too many holes and question marks in the lineup.
January 26th, 2009 at 10:53 am
JJ: Q: “..is Niese that much of a downgrade from Perez?” A: Yes. Niese is a kid that some have said “looks a bit like Jerry Koosman out there” but whose total resume consists of two crappy three inning outings and one 8 inning gem last september against the Braves. Perez, on the other hand has thrown many gems for us over the years, and when he’s on there are few pitchers in baseball that are less hittable. I know that he’s inconsistent–that he has a bit of Sid Fernandez-like tendency to get easily rattled, but he is a young pitcher with definite “ace” stuff. Niese may turn out to be something, and he may not. It’s just too early to tell. Also, if the Mets do sign Ollie, it won’t be to fill the number five slot, anyway. He’ll be counted on to be the equal of Maine and Pelfrey. A number 2 or three starter. I agree that the lineup has a lot of holes, but I’d feel a lot better moving forward with Oliver Perez and or Ben Sheets in the rotation. Let Niese be a pleasant surprise, rather than someone we have to count on to come through right away. That’s too much pressure on a young kid.
January 26th, 2009 at 11:32 am
That line about Sheets signing first is interesting. If he signs with the Mets, Ollie’s negotiating power dwindles down a bit since the Mets DON’T necessarily have to make another but if Sheets signs somewhere else, then that puts the Mets brass in a bigger hole with Bor-ass.
January 26th, 2009 at 11:46 am
awesome as always. BMF any way you can photoshop an A-Fraud Pic to send to my fellow yank fans???
January 26th, 2009 at 11:50 am
who cares? nothing new there? now if PAy-Rod slept with Jeter .. now thats a book I’d buy ..
yeh, this is getting ridiculous - it’s time to get the guy signed or move onto to Plan B ..
January 26th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Boras id the Devil
January 26th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
BMF - Couldn’t agree more. I wish Omar would sign ollie through the 2019 season!! He is such a PIMP it’s disgusting!!! When OP is on, he’s a bonafied ace and there’s no denying it. LET’S DO THIS OMAR!
January 26th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
I agree with everyone, miraculously, esp Mets 62—though I couldn’t care less about the Skanks, I want MY team to win. Though “A-Fraud” is pretty good.
Those post-apocalyptic pix of Shea are really getting me down, they symbolize the last few seasons. BMF, can’t we at least balance them out with some happy images of the new Shea, Delgado homering of the top of the scoreboard, Reyes stealing a base. . .Benitez balking twice? How about one of his face all screwed up as we win the game? How about Scott Boras’s face photoshopped onto Pam Anderson’s body? Or Cole Hamels in a bikini? Ryan Howard in a diaper? Laughs, we need laughs.
January 26th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Sign Perez and sign Pedro and let’s do this. We’ve got lots of back up already signed.
Honestly, Philiy ain’t that great and they won so it’s just a matter of guys stepping up.
January 26th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
E’ff the Spanks…who cares…same with Philly, ATL or anybody else…if they win lose…it doesn’t matter…I care about the Mets…if the Mets lose…seeing the other lose too doesn’t change hoe I feel…I stopped getting pleasure from other peoples pain when I was in JR high…is anyone surprised what was said??? really???
But it is a good example how things can get with a club when you just worry about signing the biggest name players instead of building a true team,,,
I say sign Sheets now…give him two years if he wants…once Sheets is on the books…then we can go to Bore-Ass and say…”Here’s what we are going to pay Oh’Pea…you got until 5Min make up your mind or the deal is off the table”
January 26th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
What’s the real story on Sheet’s injuries? I can’t find anything except that blog this morning with the scary headline.
January 26th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
This team needs Manny Ramirez.
There is no oen to get excited about on the offense. every time one of these clowns gets up, there’s not energy. It’s here we go again. I can’t sit through another summer of Beltran in cleanup.
Why is it so obvious to everyone but no the team. If you wnat to compete, sign Perez. Sign Sheets. Cut ties with Pedro. AND F__KING SIGN MANNY RAMIREZ. Sign hiom for 3 years. Sign hiom for 2 years. Give hom 100M dollars. Give him 50. Give him 200 - I don;t care - just f–king get him in to the lineup. Think about a healthy Alou. Think about what a bat can do. This squad will not scratch across enough runs to win a flag. They may be 2nd in the NL and lead in other categoriues, but they will empathetically not score enough runs - or score them at the right time - whichever perpsective you wnat to look at it from is fine - I don;t care.
Quote any number or stat. I’m stating a concept: this offense is weak.
January 26th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
As much as I would love the Mets to sign Ollie, I think I would rather Omar grow a set and stand up to Boras. Whatever the current offer is for Ollie up it by 1 million as a sign of good faith. Tell Boras he has 10 minutes to either accept it or it’s gone for good. If he turns it down…forget Ollie and move on! Without the Mets in the picture anymore bidding his price up……. do you really think that he is going to command more than the Mets last offer?? I think not! Let’s put an end to Boras holding a gun to our heads by making ollie a fair offer….If he turns it turn than F him!!
January 26th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Hey…. does anyone know if Shea will be completely gone by Opening Day or will we still be looking at the skeletal remains for a while?
January 26th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
This Team does not need Manny, this team needs another reliable SP and Hudson, that’s it !!! Going with Manny is getting a Cancer that is going to kill the entire team, so much as “A-fraud” does. Remember there was a rumor that Castillo took Reyes and was corrupting him, and derailing him the wrong way, so, WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK MANNY IS GONNA DO TO REYES ?????? Just think about it….
Manny = CANCER
We need to stop beggin players to come to play with us the same way we did with Beltran years ago and look what happened. We need people who is gonna really play with heart the entire season. I’d Say sign Garland and Hudson, and if you still have some money left go get some Outfielder, anybody I don’t care…
And Buck, Shea should be gone by the end of this Month, maybe mid Feb… meaning that the will take probably another 2 to 3 weeks to remove the remainings and then start with the paving of the parking lot.
January 26th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
alexjersey, if Manny is such a cancer and kills his entire team, explain why the squads he played for made the playoffs 10 times in his 14 full seasons. Cleveland, one of the worst franchises in history, went to the WS twice with him. Boston, the sad sack losers, went twice and won two titles with him. Man, does he have an adverse affect on the team.
Yes, he’s quirky. Yes, he can be a pain. Yes, he can be lazy. SHOW ME A TEAM WITHOUT ANY BALLPLAYERS LIKE THAT. It doesn’t exist, not even in little league. However, I can show you 10 teams that benefitted from his bat in the middle of their lineup.
Oh Pea would be a good signing. Sheets could be a good signing. Manny would be AN EXCELLENT SIGNING!
LET’S GO METS!
SIGN MANNY!
MANNY WILL CURE THE ILLS!
January 26th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
“We need to stop beggin players to come to play with us the same way we did with Beltran years ago and look what happened.”
Are you implying that Beltran hasn’t worked out for the Mets?
If anything, the Mets should take a page from the Beltran negotiations — and start targeting more players who are entering the prime of their career.
Fans aren’t going to fully appreciate Beltran until he’s no longer in a Met uniform.
Sad.
January 26th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Come to think of it…..I may have read that sentence wrong.
At least I hope I did.
Beltran is the exact type of signing this team needs to target in the future…..paying for the prime of a guy’s career will rarely let you down; unless of course, you’re significantly overpaying.
January 26th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Oh, and there’s no need to beg players to come to NY, but can people stop acting like Boras is doing something wrong? You may not like his tactics, but he’s doing his job and doing it well, like his clients expect. We live in a capitalist society and you’re upset that he’s using the system the best he can to benefit those paying for his services. Don’t you all do that every day? Just because the numbers he plays with are larger doesn’t make his actions wrong.
QUIT CRYING ABOUT BORAS!
SIGN MANNY!
MANNY WILL CURE THE ILLS!
January 26th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
P.S. FGMF, your suggestions for laughs were hysterical, though also frightening!
January 26th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Wow there is a lot of good comments out there, after reading everything, I kind of forgot a lot too. To the people who don’t want Manny or think he is right for this team, you do not understand what we have and what we need. This team needs a big right handed bat to put in the middle of the lineup that takes the pressure off of the people who clearly cant take it. Looking to see whats out there, there is only one person who is available. A team that has a right handed bat, who hits in the clutch and puts fear into opponents eyes, your not going to get via trade. Signing Manny makes sense on so many levels, its to good of a fit, that im sure they wont do, because as a met fan I have learned they never go the full step. Its only to a point and then they dont go for the kill. If I was building a team a certain way, sure I would go for the role players and the gritty players, but you cant get rid of everyone you have and start over, you can only go with what you got. And with what the Mets have now, adding just Orlando Hudson would be adding nice tires on a ‘72 Pontiac, it wont make much difference. I think the team needs a SP, Hudson and Manny to compete, but thats me. And the people that think the offense is fine, using the stat that they had the same amount of runs scored as the phillies last year, really dont watch Met games. They would score runs in the early innings and then nothing for the rest of the game, waiting for the bullpen to blow the lead. Or they would score 8 runs one game and then go a week without scoring more than 2. There is to many hot and cold players on this team and they seem to get cold at the same time. They need someone like Manny who doesnt feel pressure, wasnt involved in 2 years of collapses and just hits the ball hard when we need it the most, thats why we need him. He almost took a mediocre dodger team last year on his back and willed them to the world series, we need him at this time to add to what we have, more then any team has needed someone before. We need a boost, does it mean we will win the whole thing if we get him? no nothing is for certain but it gives us some moxxy we clearly need to have back…….
January 26th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
“paying for the prime of a guy’s career will rarely let you down; unless of course, you’re significantly overpaying.”
Tell that to Brian Sabean, the GM from San Francisco who signed Barry Zito to a $126 million contract. Thank God they didn’t listen to the millions of Mets fans who were crying for them to sign him.
January 26th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Ah, but The Jacket would have fixed him in 10 seconds though, so you can’t bring him into the argument.
January 26th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Ok I understand everyone’s point of view and respect your opinions. Now from my point of view i think giving Manny a contract that guarantees him his last 2 years of baseball are going to be paid, gives him the opportunity to do whatever he wants, the same way he did on his way out of Boston, he did not want to hit, play or even be in the clubhouse with his teammates, so from my point of view once he’s assured that he’s got 2 more years paid, with 40 M in his pocket I don’t think he will hustle the way we need a player to show and teach other young guys how to play this game… Unless is a contract for 10M plus incentives based on his playing time and production I don’t see it Logic and Correct to thow away money like that… So that’s why I don’t want money spent that way…
And Bjake I know what you’re saying but he did all that while he was on his prime, once he got older he became lazy and a pain for the team. Yes he did hit a lot last half of season but because he needed a contract at the end.
Now what I said about Beltran and begging for players is that by chasing Beltran the way the Mets did, created so much hype and hopes that he was the real superstar it was being sold. Don’t get me wrong I love the guy he’s one of the best players in the game, and i’d have on my team anytime, but what we as Fans and the media created after the mets almost Begged Beltran to sign with us to the point that Media said he prefered the Skankees over us at one point, that created a very bad environment for him to succeed, having a helluva season in 2006 but still not gonna be forgotten by many for ending the season the way he did. He’s been one of the best players in the past few seasons but he’s not gonna get a chance to earn the fan and media confidence… So I Bet you guys that if Ollie who’s a great pitcher and has won 15 games before, get a 15M contract and doesn’t win 17 games this year he’s gonna get killed because of what Media and Us ourselves create about all this Drama and Soap Opera called the New York Mets…
Thank You and I hope you guys understand my point of view the same way I understand yours…
January 26th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
B-Jake….I’m not saying Boras is doing anything wrong at all, as a matter of fact being the greedy b*stard that I am if I was a player I’d want him to rep for me as well. What I am saying is that GM’s don’t need to be played against one another as Boras always seems to do well. After the initial BS negotiations have played out, the GM’s need to offer him what they are willing to offer and make it known that they if their offer is not accepted in a certain specified time frame then they are done and move on. And then be prepared to do exactly that. All these freaking head games and games of chicken only work to Boras’ advantage. My point is make a fair offer (one that the team and player can live with) and if it doesn’t work out let him try and get it from another team without the benefit of having the Mets to fall back on. 9 times out of 10 (the 1 being the Skanks who will overpay for anyone), I bet the other teams offers falls below the NYMets.
January 26th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
On what planet is Manny going to settle for $10 mil + incentives. Lip is giving him $50 for 2 years and that’s Lip. Lecture the GM and staff for bending over to sign a guy but let’s not get crazy here. Ollie isn’t signing for $10 mil per!!!
January 26th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
alexjersey, I hear ya. And yes, it’s riskier because of the point in his career and getting a large contract, but he also likes being the man and would want to star in NY (in my opinion).
Buck, I hear ya as well. The problem is supply and demand. The supply of elite players is limited, so if a GM tells Boras to go eff himself, it’s not like they can easily grab a player of equal value. Having said that, I understand not wanting to bid against yourself or get played for somebody else to pay more than they want, but in the end it’s the nature of free agency, and Boras is good at playing that game.
SIGN SHOLLIE!

I wish Gary was making the call on this instead of Jon Morgan, but here’s something to make you smile… http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?mid=200809073436797.
January 26th, 2009 at 6:17 pm
btw, Jon Morgan = Jon Miller + Joe Morgan.
January 26th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
Boras is not the problem. His players can veto any deal he brings. If Oliver wanted to be a Met first and foremost, he’d say, “Sorry Scotty B., you’re going to take a haircut on this one becasue I’m staying put”.
I agree that player’s salaries are way out of whack. However owners are willing to pay them and have the ability to pay them. If Wilpon ays Ollie 15M a year, imagine how much money HE makes. It’s all connected.
As a player, why would you want anyone other than Boras? The owners created this mess - fist by robbing players blind and then by showing zero restraint. The worst of which is by their having a patsy of a commish for the last 12 years or however long Selig has had a stranglehold i=on the game. Selig works for the owners and the powerful ones at that. In the scheme of things, I’d much rather see a 27 year old kid get the cake than Wilpon.
January 27th, 2009 at 9:49 am
THE ONLY WAY I SEE A REASON TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE IS IF YOU LOOK AT EACH PLAYER IN A PRPOSED LINEUP INDIVIDUASLLY, TAKE EVERY NEGATIVE POSSIBILITY FOR HIM AND PROJECT IT ONTO THE ‘09 SEASON. PERSONALLY, I PREFER TO LOOK AT THE OFFENSE, ACCEPT THAT WITH ONLY A HALF PRODUCTIVE SEASON FROM CLEANUP IN DELGADO, A SUBPAR SEASON FROM A RECOVERING CASTILLO, A SUBPAR SEASON FROM SCHNEIDER IN MOSTLY THE MOST DIFFICULT HITTING POSITION IN NL (8th) AN INJURY PLAGUED SEASON TO CHURCH, ONLY 3/4 OF A SEASON FROM TATIS & 1 MO. FROM MURPH A WEARING DOWN OF REYES AFTER 159 GAMES(MORE REST W/CORA?). AMIDST ALL THOSE NEGARIVES NOT LIKELY TO RECUR THEY SCORED 799 RUNS FOR A TIE FOR 2nd IN NL WITH PHL WHO PLAY HALF THEIR GAMES IN A CIGARBOX STADIUM INSTEAD OF EXPANSIVE SHEA. ARE YOU OFFENSE WORRIED FANS GOING TO COUNT ON NONE OF THOSE NERGATIVES IMPROVING? IS TATIS REALLY THAT MUCH OF A ?. AT 34 YRS OLD IS HE REALLY KAPUT? WHAT IF YOU ADDED HIS 12 AAA HRs TO HIS 11 IN MAJORS FOR A FULL YR CONSIDERATION WHILE REMEMBERING HE TOTALLY MISSED SPRING TRAINING & ADMITTEDLY DID NOT TRY FOR HR WHEN FIRST CALLEDUP. TO ME, IN THAT PLATOON MURPH IS THE BIGGER ?. TATIS WILL BE A PLEASANT SUPRISE. IF WE ALL AGREE BORAS IS LIKELY THE BRIGHTEST OF THE AGENTS OUT THERE, WHY HAS HE NOT GONE BACK TO LA & SF IF THEY’RE REALLY THE LAST 2 STANDING? I BELIEVE IT’S DUE TO ONGOING HOPE FOR NY SOLUTION. JEFF, DAVID & NOW JERRY ARE TALKING IT UP INSTEAD OF “NO COMMENT ARY” OF SEPT-DEC. DIFFERENCE? BORAS & OMAR TALKED IN JAN, (LOWE & PEREZ)

Hi excellent blog yea nice job Wow! what an idea ! What a concept ! Beautiful .. Amazing
