Met Tradition Now Made in… Minnesota?!?
BMF was psyched when I first heard the HR Apple would be coming with us to CityField. Hey, don’t mean to be sappy but I get the warm and fuzzies knowing my (yet to be born) kids will also know the joys of a HR Apple.
Sure it’s hokey but it’s the Mets most cherished tradition and if you loved the Apple in the ‘80’s you know it belongs in the new stadium.
So Bravo to the Wilpons on that one!
But I was flummoxed to hear they’re building it in — Minnesota. Wha???
Why on earth would you decide to build a gigantic, 6,000 pound, fiberglass and steel structure 2,000 miles away from where it needs to be???
Maybe I’m missing something and the town of Le Center, MN is actually a hotbed of cutting edge fiberglass manufacturing… or something?
Because it’s a shame this job wasn’t contracted to a local company to support nyc’s economy. In fact BMF personally knows a studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn that could’ve made a great fiberglass Apple for the Mets - hydraulics and everything.
No offense to the good people at Fiberglas Fabricators, or the lovely Jennifer Hudspeth (of whom BMF is now a fan) but we’re talking about a stadium that will make it’s money in NY so why wouldn’t they invest in the city by commissioning a “locally grown” Apple?
I wonder if it was simply an issue of accepting the lowest bid?
Oh well, maybe for the next new stadium.
But at least this one looks like it’s gonna be pretty cool…

Mojo Kitty rocks the batting helmet for luck!

I was thinking the same thing when I saw that video. The right now are so bad at making deals, they couldn’t not even get a deal on a New Yorker to make the Apple in the Big Apple!
Bad Joke.
Any chance that gets shipped by air?
January 22nd, 2009 at 6:56 am
It’s a lowest bidder deal most likely…
January 22nd, 2009 at 8:45 am
Sounds like an issue for Pollan, Kingsolver and the “grow local” crowd.
At least it wasn’t built in Bangalore.
Sign Jennifer!!!

What…no Freddy Garcia discussion?
“The Mets and Yankees have emerged as the leading contenders for free-agent right-hander Freddy Garcia, according to a major-league source.
Garcia, 33, has “pretty much narrowed it down” to the New York teams, the source said, though two other clubs remain on the periphery. The White Sox also have had interest in Garcia, and the Rangers were in the early mix.
Garcia would prefer a major-league contract, which would guarantee him termination pay if he were released in March, but might need to accept a minor-league deal.”

Those as yet to be born kids may never see the light of day if you’re going after media hotties BMF!
Garcia, sure, why not. I’m still waiting for the big ah-ha moment when all these ditsy deals will make sense and we clean out who is just trade bait, although it doesn’t seem like we have too many of those at all.

The HR Apple is just about the CHEESIEST thing the Mets have ever done. I’ve been so embarrased ever time they show it. It ranks second only to the Mule they used as a mascot in the late ’70’s. What did they end up naming that Mule? Mets-a-mucil?
January 22nd, 2009 at 10:17 am
I love the Apple. It separates it from all the other parks. Cheesy? Maybe, but unique. The kids love it as well. What do you get in other parks? In skankee stadium you get a big electronic billboard sign of “A-Job hits another useless grand slam in a 16-3 game. Way to go.”

Minnesota got the bid as part of the Santana deal…
January 22nd, 2009 at 10:51 am
Nice one El Dude! I’ve always thought the HR Apple was cheesy as hell but have to admit it has grown on me over the years and I would probably miss it if it were gone.
January 22nd, 2009 at 10:52 am
I hate the apple, its the stupidest ugliest thing I have ever seen and the only people that call teh city the big apple are politicians. And being a long time Met fan the apple is a simple of the bad days from when it made its first debute.
January 22nd, 2009 at 11:15 am
I confess I also love the apple. Cheesy, YES. Part of my Mets experience growing up, YES. Want one in the new park, YES. Now if only they can make MANNY come out of the apple when it arrives!
It’s a shame the city doesn’t/didn’t put in rules and regulations that anything that can be made in NY for the new stadiums be made in NY, provided bids are within reason.
Btw, all the talk was about the apple, but what about the hat?
SIGN MANNY!
SIGN MANNY!
SIGN MANNY!
(MY SIGNOFF UNTIL HE SIGNS SOMEWHERE, BY A MIRACLE WITH THE METS)

Why the Hate on for the Apple?
what has it ever done to you?
live and let live .. thats what I say ..
I used to hate the apple ..but now, with Obama in office .. I’m more tolerant ..
BTW, I had no use for the apple until I saw Strawberry hit one right in the hat - almost dismantling the apple as it tried to rise !!
now, thats cheesy ..

The Apple has been around since 1980. While the apple has become somewhat of the cheesy symbol of the NY METS and Shea Stadium. I have absolutely no use for the ‘Magic Hat’ that the apple pops out of unless they incorporate the slogan ‘The Magic is Back’ which is why the thing was sitting in Centerfield in the first place. I say bring the apple back but lose the hat which has no more significance than re-sisigning George Foster to fill the LF void!!

Matt, you should know by now that every thing the Mets/Wilpons/Omar is going to incite hate…justified or not…almost everyone in Met land seems to be very angry…
I thought with Obama, everything was going to be different….BTW, how come I haven’t heard uproars to rename Ford Field in to Bailout Field…
The Apple may be Cheesy, but it’s not as bad a giant slide in Left field or a train that moves 10ft…at least the Apple makes scene…

HAH - point taken wynd!
January 22nd, 2009 at 2:59 pm
What’s with the Apple haters? Geez, lighten up.
The old apple is going to be on the concourse and the new apple is huge and shiny, but better looking than Telly Savalas’s dome.

The team should be good this year. Quit crying! At least we’re not Cubs fans.
January 22nd, 2009 at 3:12 pm
Love the apple.
I can’t get on the Mets - their GC got the plans and bid them out. Not a front office decision if I had to guess. At least it’s coming back.
Of course it won;t get much exercise with this lineup.
January 22nd, 2009 at 3:30 pm
Ah Lip, you never disappoint. The first 2 sentences were so positive that I started hearing the Twilight Zone music in my head and then everything came back to Earth with the last sentence. Whew!
January 22nd, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Looking at the old Apple in all of it’s “glory” — I just again have to laugh wildly over the idea of making it the centerpiece of of a brand, spankin’ new ballpark.
This is what Met fans were fighting so hard to keep, and see pop up right smack-dab in the middle of a perch in CF.
SO glad they’ve gone with a new one….
January 22nd, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Maybe we can make a deal - Jennifer Hudspeth comes, too?

I love the apple! It reflects the absurdity that has always permeated Metsdom. That’s why we need to keep the top hat, that’s the element that takes it from just silly to pure absurdity.
I hope they don’t dress the new one up in too many fancy LEDs or god forbid, advertising. Like the official “Mott’s Homerun Apple” or some crap. Its bad enough playing in Purina Cat Chow Stadium, or whatever this place is going to be called by the end of the bailout.
January 22nd, 2009 at 6:53 pm
I just hope that: a) it gets a good workout, and b) they can keep it operational. The machinery to lift that sucker is gonna be a big step up from the paper mache version… why do I feel like we’re gonna hit a HR in a big spot on national tv, and the apple is just gonna sit there, smoking…
January 22nd, 2009 at 11:39 pm
Maybe with the money they make from making the apple, Minnesota can afford to sign Manny.
