Big Pelf is Good but Myers is Better

Oh well there goes the sweep.

It’s tough to win when you don’t score and unfortunately for Pelfrey his boys couldn’t manage a single run against Brett Myers.

Big Pelf was lookin’ pretty bad ass in that beard of his and deserved a win for his effort 2ER, 4H, 2BB, 4K, in 7IP. Instead his record fell to 13-9 thanks to an unearned run in the 1st and a 2 run shot in the 7th.

Church ALMOST pulled an Endy Chavez and brought Greg Dobb’s HR ball back from beyond the wall. Shea would’ve gone nuts but it barely eluded Church kissing the tip of his mitt before landing safely in HR territory.

But the good news is the crowd at Shea was hyped like it was a playoff game!

Look a sweep was an unrealistic expectation by us Met fans and even though BMF mentioned how sweet it’d be I didn’t really expect to take all 3 from the Phils.

But now the pressure shifts to us cuz we really need to win the next 2 games. If not we’ll find ourselves with just a 2 game or NO game lead come monday morning.

The schedule favors us the rest of the way but we really should take advantage of this final showdown with the Filthies in our building…

***

I know I say this all the time but Danny Murphy is da’ MAN!!!

Murphy continued to march towards .400 by collecting 2 more hits, both doubles. He did his job in the 2 hole but his teammates just couldn’t get him in.

No disrespect to Nick Evans, who I like a lot, but I hope to see Gen Manuel keep giving the Murph regular AB’s.

  1. Delgado's Dump Says:

After fighting off Lidge, I think his actions speak louder than words. I don’t think there will be problems getting more playing time.

I think they should have put Easley in for Castillo because he is just not making any contact.

Marlon Anderson? Is he still feeding off that buffet? What about Tatis, Evans and even the bat boy. Just Silly. You might as well take his bat and feed it through the chipper.

Myers was good today and lately. He’s not better. That’s clear. It could have been either one. What a strange pitching duel. Who’d ever thought of a fourth starter showdown like that one.

Pedro better have his s**t together tomorrow…and so his bats to back him up.

You dont get to be known as first name “Pedro” just by throwing Don Zimma’ to the ground.

If we dont beat up on Jaime “Old Man River” Moyer tomorrow..we have problems.

DFV really needs a few purpose pitches his way. Hopefully “Pedro” goes “Don Zimma” on him tomorrow. IF not, I am sensing the next riff is going to involve Mikey giving Cody Ross an atomic Wedgie.

  2. Riggs Says:

The reason we didn’t see Easley start or Evans, Tatis pinch hit any time during the game is because Myers is a righty and Manuel is always thinking about the match-up first. Since Moyer is a lefty, it will be a completely different lineup today (Evans batting 2nd, Tatis in for Church, Easley in for Castillo)

  3. Riggs Says:

… and one more: Cancel in for Schneider

  4. The Lip Says:

What can you do? Myers was NASTY. That dude knows how to pitch and whne he has his breaking ball, it’s textbook. He could make millions teaching people to throw like that. That curve was sensational. It was pretty awesome to watch, admittedly.

Plef pitched really well. I think he was hot and tired toward the end, but whatever, his guys couldn’t score for him.

Lifting Rincon for Sanchez was a little ridiculous. Enough of this specialist bullsh-t already. It really ruins the game.

Today is a washout and that is bad. Giving the Phillies a LATE season oportunity to take a full game is NOT good. Assuming the Mets are still in first. It’s nice TODAY becasue there’s no slide in stadings (worst case), but I’d rather make up half games against FLA abnd ATL - not that those teams are easy - these are the Mets after all; but Philly scares me in late Sept more than the others. The METS scare me more in late September than FLA and ATL - no one can beat them but themselves - are Brett Myers and his apesh-t curveball.

  5. SamInNorthCakalakey Says:

Relax, I think the Mets have lost all except one of the starting games in a series against the Phucks this season. They then have gone to win the remainder of the series. We’ll be ok.

  6. dave Says:

i really don’t think castillo is into this team very much..i just get that feeling when i see him play..

and he’s not making a good case for himself..you know..when jerry says “if you play well..you’ll see more playing time”…well.. 3 strike outs looking is not a good look for you luis..

maybe all the “castillo’s job is not promised when he returns from the DL” talk popped his confidence bubble..

  7. Delgado's Dump Says:

Riggs, I figured it had to do with a matchup type thing but..

sometimes (even just once) I think manuel should ignore that matchup lefty-righty and vice versa situation and go with who has the hotter bat or who has had a better season overall. Especially after Castillo struck out a number of times. What’s the worst that could happen by having Easley pinch hit for him? Anyways with easley there is only a .02 difference between the sides. Not exactly night and day.

It looks like Pedro with have another day to “rest” up.

  8. His Dudeness... El Duderino Says:

The thing with Easley is that he is HUNGRY - you can see it in his eyes whenever he steps to the plate. Sixteen seasons in the majors and he’s never been to the playoffs. Castillo looked like he was phoning in every AB.

Big Pelf was 1 pitch away from getting out of that inning, and Church’s glove was just a couple inches too short.

Loved seeing Shea rockin’ in the 9th… if that line drive by Church goes a few feet further…

Tall order on Sunday to sweep the day-night doubleheader but if Pedro can bring it, I trust General Jerry, the bats, and Santana to handle the rest.
