Jason Bay - Worst Contract of the Decade?
You know the regular season is fast approaching when mega-contract Mets start getting hurt.
Yup, Jason Bay strained an oblique in the batting cage and is now on the shelf until further notice. To me this is a month long injury. Rib cage strains are tricky animals and you certainly don’t want to rush the guy back only to have him … blah, blah, blah… we all know the end of that sentence.
Meanwhile Bay and his 4yr/66M contract are now careening towards epic bust status. I can’t honestly think of anyone with a new deal for the 20-teens (or whatever this decade is called) who has performed worse than Jason “6HR” Bay.
What are the odds the Mets pick up Bay’s 17M option in year 2014? Pretty slim considering Bay needs 600 PAs in 2013 or 500 PAs in both 2012, 2013 to activate the option.
The funny thing is I’m sorta relieved to hear this because I’d much rather root for Lucas Duda than either of the past their prime bros Beltran and Bay.

Remember when Eddie Kunz was the next big thing? Our closer in waiting? He was part of Omar’s revamped minor league system right? Well yesterday he was traded for a guy I’ve never heard of named Allan Dykstra (no relation to Nails)

Vegas has the Met over/under at 74.5 — hmmmmm I’m takin’ the over. BMF is certainly not high on the Met fortunes this year but I think we can net 75 wins. I mean jeez they’d have to finish 7 games under .500 to lose that bet. Even I don’t think we’ll be that bad… But if it means the Wilpons have to sell I’ll gladly take the loss on that wager.

Nice - no sooner do we finish talking about the Castillo and Perez contracts than we start talking about another potential catastrophe of the Omar Minaya era.
I’m living in Paris for awhile and have seen a poster all over town for a new movie called “Omar m’a tuer”…translated “Omar killed me”. All I can figure is this is a documentary of the life of a Mets fan the past 4 years…I’ll be sure to go…I probably won’t even need the subtitles…

Let’s wait to see how much time Jason Bay will miss and how well he performs this season before we label him an “epic bust.”
March 30th, 2011 at 8:27 am
Come On Jason- get better. We need that bat in the lineup . Lets go Mets !!!
March 30th, 2011 at 9:28 am
Whoa…waayyy too soon. I truly think that if Bay didn’t get concussed, he’d have turned it around. It wouldn’t have been a typical Bay year, but I think he would have come around. If you ask me, Omar had plenty of bad contracts. The Jason Bay deal could still go either way but I think he has enough redeemable qualities to make it a better deal…

If I was in a hatin’ mood, it’d be soooooo easy to kick Bay when he’s down… but it’s spring (though in the 40s,) Met baseball’s back (albeit with a few more injury issues than I’d like) and it’s time to get into the game.
Maybe Bay is out for a few weeks or a month, then puts up decent numbers the rest of the way? Who knows? For 2011, who cares?
Let’s play ball, and Let’s Go Mets!

“Worst contract of the decade”? Overreact much? There is reason for concern, but last year he had a concussion. Can’t hold that against him. Also, I’m sure New Shea got into his head, just like Wright. Once he starts playing this year, I’m sure he’ll rebound, just like Wright. As for his possible stint on the DL, wouldn’t you rather have the Mets play it safe rather than rush him back only to make the injury worse and lose him for an extended period of time?
There are 4 things the Mets fans wanted to happen by Opening Day: get rid of Omar, Jerry, Ollie & Castillo. That was done. We’re moving in the right direction. I think we should try and enjoy the season and take the good with the bad. Odds are we’ll have +/- 80 losses to deal with. That means at least 80 or so posts saying how this team is going down the $hitter and 80 or so posts saying how the team can come back and win it all.
So until the season starts, lets all think positive and take the ‘11 season as a “rebirth” and watch the team (hopefully) grow into a contending team over the next few years.
LET’S GO METS GO!

I love you, BMF, but I think your hysteria level this spring is a little crazy. Can we at least enjoy some positivity and hopefulness about this season without obsessing over wert potential disappontment or problem? I get it—-we all have PTSD from the Omar Era, but I think we should at least TRY and give this team and this season a chance before we go all Jonestown mass suicide. Seems to me most Met fans are cautiously optimistic, if not for a great season, then at least for a new start. Let’s save the chicken little routine for, I dunno, May or June?

Seeing that we haven’t even played one game in the this decade, let’s hold off a little…in fact let’s wait until the doctors check him out before you diagnose him with a “strained an oblique”?
March 30th, 2011 at 12:33 pm
i’d say it’s a bad contract, not necessarily the worst. 4 years isn’t all that long. 66 mil is a lot of money.. but not it’s not in the 100’s range. 7 years 124 mil for a 30-something right fielder, now that’s a lot of money for a .296, 27 HR, 85 RBI guy
March 30th, 2011 at 12:37 pm
Poor BMF can’t catch a break. Last year he was a Mets shill who saw no evil. This year he’s a crank who sees no good.
It must be exhausting to create a new topic every day during preseason. I might be prone to hyperbole too. Thankfully in two days we will have actual losses to complain about. Er games to analyze.
March 30th, 2011 at 12:52 pm
this year is different. You guys don’t exactly have the same expectations.
March 30th, 2011 at 1:05 pm
The game is on the radio right now and you can even hear it online.
March 30th, 2011 at 1:15 pm
Ha, so much for Castillo making the Phils and getting revenge on the Mets…so what’s his excuse gonna be this time?
March 30th, 2011 at 2:17 pm
Hopefully Bay just tweaked it & won’t miss significant time. I am more concerned about Beltran…not one of the few who think he’ll have a great year because he’s in a contract year. I’m pretty sure he will be on the DL by Easter after batting .220 to start with zero SBs. It’s kinda sad but, you just can’t play a sport like baseball at a high level with arthritic knees…it doesn’t get better, only progressively worse.
When he does go down, I hope Duda gets the chance.
March 30th, 2011 at 2:21 pm
Hey BMF - looks like your boy Beato is going north!!
March 30th, 2011 at 3:39 pm
I love that news about Castillo, USMF. The Phillies actually could have the luxury of taking their time with a 2B decision (since they need one for the time being) and just cut ties. See? Why was it labeled the worst move the mets could make, yet the Phils weren’t? I mean, crap is crap, right?

Oh and FGMF, El Dude, Irish Mike, MtMF, Phanatic - thanks to BMF’s hooked-upped-ness, we have a table in the dining room for our Mets (road) Opening Day! Thank YOU BMF…and I am SO EXCITED to see you all there!!!
March 30th, 2011 at 4:11 pm
Good news, Evans cleared wavers…he’s going back to AAA.
News on Bay doesn’t seem to be bad…it’s too early to tell, but he’s heading back to Florida so it can’t be serious. If it was, they’d have said something by now.
March 30th, 2011 at 4:23 pm
Surprise,Surprise- Castillo got cut by the Phillies- Lets go Mets !!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn’t know we wanted a table in the dining room. I usually turn into a pumpkin if I am more than 15 feet from the bar.
Will BMF be there?
March 30th, 2011 at 7:07 pm
They have tables?
March 30th, 2011 at 8:37 pm
Worst contract ever is a tie between the first one Omar got and his extension. That brought one disaster after another, starting with that selfish con man pedro martinez.
March 30th, 2011 at 8:43 pm
ps - and I like the comment about BMF being a shill last year. Actually, it was for the entire Minaya era. He wasn’t alone; other mutts blogs including defenses of jerry and nomore right until the end. How many bloggers embraced ‘gangsta’ and pandered to him when he was a f**king fraud from minute he showed up? How many frantically blogged about how nomore was going to save us at the trading deadline even though it was clear that he was hiding under his desk every july 31?
BMF is a liberal and now there are boring white guys running everyting so it’s easy to criticize the mets. When he had beloved minorities as mgr and GM he was in a tough spot. Didn’t want all his patchouli-wearin’, bike-ridin’ park slope neighbors to think less of him for not embracing diversity.
Get your poison pen out, BMF. Alderson and Collins are just plain old white guys so the hate light is on for you…
March 31st, 2011 at 12:38 am
Somar: please just go away. You’re a hateful dick, and just when we think maybe we’ve heard the last of you, up you pop again with the same old b.s.
March 31st, 2011 at 11:10 am
the worst contract of the decade might have to go to OPs 3yr/$36M deal. At least the Mets wised up, cut their losses and moved on. As far as Bay’s contract, I am holding out judgement until the end of the season.
March 31st, 2011 at 3:06 pm
I am very concerned that with Bay having to spend time on the DL, he will not be able to reach his typical Mets numbers of 170 K’s for the season.
Well, at least Beltran is starting the season on the active list. That should last for at least a week.
Lets Go Mets!

How many Mets fans will be at the dining room table at Blondies on Friday? I will try to join you guys.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
