Curtain Call For The Murph!

With all the injuries and out of position players you’d think the Mets would be hitting the skids right now. Instead Danny Murphy is taking a curtain call at Shea!

.BMF’s newest favorite player Danny Murphy came off the bench to deliver a 2-run pinch-hit HR. It was his first big league blast (off a lefty no less) and resulted in a 100% bona-fide Shea Stadium curtain call!

The fans stood and demanded The Murph return to the top step and bask in his newfound glory and after a prod from Castro, Murphy obliged and was showered with love. The celebration was not only for the HR but for every hit, walk and great catch he’s made thus far.

BMF couldn’t be a bigger Danny Murphy fan. The kid literally came out of nowhere to be the team’s “2 Week MVP”. Danny certainly isn’t the first player to start white-hot but his patience and composure make it look like he’s got a fantastic career ahead of him.

Wow is it good to see the return of the Curtain Call at Big Shea! If I’m not mistaken the only other successful curtain call this season was Fernando Tatis. Of course Delgado was called, but chose not to curtain.

I think the absence of curtain calls is an interesting social commentary on the Shea Faithful and player/fan relations. It’s been such an ugly period for so long in Met-land that the curtain calls just shriveled up and died. There was increasingly less winning and joy from July ’07 to June ’08 and at some point along the way the curtain call went underground.

With all the losing and hostility during the Willie games this year curtain calls were just too awkward for everyone. People on both sides were mad, hurt and resentful and you just won’t see a curtain call under those conditions, short of someone reaching a milestone.

But the Curtain Calls have returned and BMF sees that as a great indication that things are going well again in the world if the NY Mets.

Props to Omar because Stokes over Niece was a good call.

.At 28 Brian Stokes isn’t as young as the kiddie corps Mets but Stokes proved that he’s got enough talent to make an impact on the big league level.

BMF thought he pitched great despite allowing 4R on 7H, 1BB, 6K in 5.2IP. Aside from the pair of 2 run HRs he was fantastic but the 2 swings resulted in him giving back a 4-0 lead. When Stokes was yanked after the game tying bomb the Shea Faithful showed real class by giving him a standing ovation as he walked off the field.

This too signals times have changed because a couple of months ago I’m guessing he would’ve been booed!

Stokes also managed his 1st ever major league hit only to see Mike Jacobs accidentally throw the ball into the stands! Jacobs tried to lollipop it into the dugout but it bounced off the concrete roof and into a young fans hands. Luckily Delgado quickly brokered a deal to trade for Stokes’ ball. Funny moment.

Quick Hits:

• Danny Murphy pushed his avg as high as .527 with his home run but later a strikeout brought him back down to earth where he’s again batting just .500.

• Tatis made another tough catch which Matt Yallof summed up perfectly, “Nothing Tatis does looks easy but everything looks fun!” That’s a great line Matty!

• Joy Murphy (Bob Murphy’s widow) pulled down the Shea Games Left number from 26-25. BRAVO Mets!!!! That’s exactly the quality of person who we should have participating in these pull downs!

Was hysterical to see that Danny prepares for the pitch in LF exactly the same way he did as a 3B in the AA All-Star game. He’s getting down lower than David out there, lol.

The boy is LARGE and jeez I can’t imagine him as a 2B. Seems like he can do just about anything he wants, though!

It’s amazing how fast they can move up. I’d barely even heard of him before that all-star game, and he wasn’t exactly hyped within it. That was less than a month ago - look at him now!

Great post BMF. We’re all sure glad that the Mets’ farm system is “bone dry” and there was nothing there to help contribute.
To Schmitty’s point, who had ever heard of Murphy? For those who watched the gema, they saw that Stokes was a pitch away from getting out of the 6th, but couldn’t put away Jacobs. I think he pitched a bit better then his line showed.
Let’s see what the mets can do today, when they go for the sweep, and then on Monday against a bad Bucs team.
    Speaking of which.
Looking for at least 4 tickets for Monday’s game.
POST IF YOU HAVE THEM. Thanks.

  3. KMac Says:

Props to Carlos B for his hitting and bigger props for becoming the clubhouse leader the team needs. He’s taken Evans and Murphy under his wings and good things are happening. Fans don’t always hear about things like this but the often can be just as important as the on field stuff.

  4. dster Says:

Murphy DOES look like the real deal, but so did Benny Agbayani after 73 at bats, so I hope to see him sustain this. If the guy becomes a .290 hitter in the bigs over two months–I’m sold.

And you’re right about Stokes. The stat line didn’t show it, but he looked like he had great stuff, with great ball movement and change of speeds. Maye the AAA pitching coach recently tinkered with him, because his stat line the last few years didn’t show that kind of stuff.

  5. IrishMike Says:

Nobody’s loving a guy named Murphy more than a guy named Irish Mike. However assuming he’s not going to be a lifetime .500 hitter (unlikely IMO) he’s due for a big oh-fer soon. The Mets need to figure out when that is going to be and send him to AAA for a week.

LOVED seeing Joan Murphy out there.

  6. Jim Says:

Murph can flat out hit, Mets just need to find a position for him.

I thought Stokes pitched a great game last night, good sizzle on his fast ball, and I thought he mixed his pitches nicely. Jacobs hit a good pitch on the home run.

Living in South Florida, its always nice to take a series from the Marlins

  7. Fort Greene Met Fan Says:

For once, I agree with everything and everyone!

    I *heart* Dan Murphy!!

GET OUT YER BROOMS, FOLKS, AND LET’S GET THE SWEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
