Borderline Miracle Win

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Last nite had all the earmarks of a big fat L hanging in the air. Before play even began we lost Bay to the DL with a cracked rib and Big Pelf for the SEASON with a partially torn ligament in his elbow.

Add to that the return of Reyes and the deflating sweep on Mon and it felt like we were in free fall.

Incredibly Johan Santana rebounded from last week’s catastrophe to throw a GEM that saw him in complete control the entire way allowing 1R, 3H, 2BB, 11K in 6.1 IP.

But that wouldn’t have been enough to get it done with the dormant offense that needed the help of 4 different Fish pitchers issuing 4 consecutive walks to finally plate a run in the 7th.

I don’t know whats happening with Ike Davis but he just looks AWFUL at the dish. Another 0-2 dropp ed him to .131 on the year. Almost .100 points BELOW the struggling Duda who upped his avg to .228.

I’m happy we got that win but it felt like an empty victory. Johan ain’t gonna pitch every day and we just lost Big Pelf who has been quietly having a GREAT season so far.

I was disappointed to hear Jose get any boos whatsoever last night. His initial appearance at the plate produced an underwhelming crowd response - mostly because there were about 37 fans in the stands at that point but IMO no Met fan should have booed Reyes.

WTF is a “Mr Met Cling”??? SNY kept promo-ing it during the game as an upcoming giveaway but refused to tell or show us what a “Cling” is. I know the Mets have a grand history of screwing up easy things but you’d think it would occur to someone in promotions to explain what the actual promotion is.

Did the Bubble Burst?

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

If you’re a Met fan like BMF you’ve been sleeping with one eye open waiting for this magical bubble to burst.

I don’t expect the Mets to win anything this year, nor did I anticipate a plus .500 season. But once we got off to this surprisingly good start my hopes of a competitive season began to grow. Obviously we’re still in May so it’s sorta silly to get to hyped about anything, but watching the Mets get their ass kicked by the Giants in Monday’s double header was incredibly discouraging.

Losing 3 of 4 and not even facing Matt Cain doesn’t bode well for the state of the Mets.

So after 2 plus weeks we’re 8-8.

I have a bad feeling getting beat up by the Giants may tip us the wrong way. Now the Marlins come to town and if they so push us around we may be headed for a free fall.

The Fish have been under achieving and we’re been over achieving so this series really smells like trouble to me.

I would expect Jose to get a tremendous ovation when he leads off in the top of the first. Jose has been awfully quiet so far this season so it makes perfect sense that he will suddenly roar to life and thrash the Mets in front of our eyes.

The crazy thing is I don’t think I can root against Jose…

Double Dip Monday

Lincecum has been getting lit up every game so far so I like our chances in game 1…

Old-Skool Twin Bill

It’s a good old fashioned 2 for the price of 1 double header today at New Shea

Weird how this randomly happened when the Giants were scheduled for one of those strange wrap-around Fri-Mon series …

Wacky Saturday Game

Sunday, April 22nd, 2012

Crazy 9th inning as each team’s D did their best to give the game away.  What a shame to see Pelfrey’s latest very solid outing go to waste but more important is Big Pelf looked effective and confident all afternoon.

I don’t know why the SNY guys initially blamed Tejada for not catching Belt’s game tying “double” with 2 out in the 9th. It was painfully obvious it was Nieuwenheis’ play. The ball was VERY deep for a SS to get to and was comfortably in front of the CF who merely overran the ball.

But luckily the Giants gave it back when 1st Huff missed an assignment to pivot at second and turn 2. Instead he broke towards first on contact … Which is exactly what happens when you put a 35 yr old vet who’s never played second before at second base.

So Burriss, now at short, was forced to throw to first and he got the runner but the ump blew the call in our favor.

After that Posey helped more when he threw wide left to 1st after getting the force at the plate in the 9th. He may have been interfered with as Hairston slid into him.

Sunday is rubber game and would be an important win to get…

Unbelievable to watch our ex-prospect Humber thrown a perfect game. 27 up and 27 down. Good for him… Torture for the Mets who are now at 50 years plus w/o a no-no.

Meanwhile, I don’t blame the ump for helping the kid out but Ryan DID NOT swing at that final pitch which was clearly a ball.

How the F did the yankees come back on BOS after trailing 9-0 in the 5th to win 15-9. They were booing Bobby V who has gotten off to a less that ideal start up there - Wow! Didn’t see that coming.
