It’s difficult to make any real judgements from 2 days of spring games but here are a couple early observations: 

• Look out for Jenrry Mejia. The kid breezed through 2 innings with 0ER and 3K and it looks like he’s back in the saddle after the all that silliness of bouncing to the pen and back last season. 

• Fernando Martinez threw down a mini gauntlet with a 2 run blast. Still a ways to go to regain super prospect status but he definitely let us know he’s still here.

• Ollie Perez is still technically in the race for a starting position but he’s doing his best to eliminate himself with a shaky spring debut. 

• Chris Young looked good, and most importantly healthy, in his first action. I really have high hopes for the gigantic pitcher so this was great to see.

• Great to hear Castillo is impressing the coaches so far - although I have to wonder if there is a PR operation in action to help facilitate a trade… 

Its awfully early to start picking favorites for open positions but I gotta say I find myself rooting for Brad Emaus to win the second base job.

I used to love Murphy but he feels like yesterday’s news to me. 

I even defended Castillo and his contract well beyond almost any other Met fan — but no more.

Right now I love the idea of Riccardi grabbing a kid out of Toronto’s system and next thing we know he’s starting for the Mets. Sorta illustrates how our ex GM’s inability to stock our own system.

I’m just diggin’ the idea of a big kid at second base who can thump a little. We don’t necessarily need speed at second - we’ve might have a lot of SB’s out of Reyes, Pagan, Wright and Beltran (in that order).

Of course this may all change after as little as 1 spring training game but right now I’m rooting for Brad Emaus.

Now does anyone know how to pronounce his name??!?

Thank you Terry Collins (and/or Sandy Alderson) for hatching an intelligent plan for young gun Jenrry Mejia. Of course this years plan doesn’t include bouncing him from rotation to pen and back again.

Collins has already stated Jenrry will begin season as a starter in AAA and may likely come up by midseason. BMF was relieved to see this after beating the Mejia must start drum for the past year. Our rotation is wide open for one or two kids to command a slot at some point in ‘11 and it seems Collins is doing his best to give his guys a chance to do so. 

All I’ve ever asked for Mejia is a fair shot to do what he knows and does best — start. I firmly believe if given the opportunity he’ll earn a shot with the big club - and likely woulda done so last year also.

I’ve got a GREAT feeling about Mejia and can’t wait to see in action this spring.

With all the attention on the Wilpon’s ponzi schemes, the health of Beltran, Reyes and Bay, and our new GM/skipper combo, Ike Davis is flying WAAAY under the radar.

Normally a first baseman playing in NY who clubbed 19 HR his rookie season would be squarely in the spotlight during his sophomore spring training.

But you barely hear ANYTHING about Ike these days which is probably the best possible scenario for the youngster.

Terry Collins has certainly taken notice though claiming Davis is going to be a ‘premier first baseman,’ with ‘enormous power,’ who can be a ‘legit clean-up hitter.’

Wow those are big words from the skipper but BMF has envisioned that future for Ike all winter. 

Meanwhile let’s not forget Davis is already one of the best defensive first basemen in the game. 

I’m looking foward to watching a number of individual player seasons unfold but probably none as much as Ike Davis.

Word is both our new GM and skipper spoke to the team Monday and did their part to set the tone for the 2011 Mets.

Alderson said he won’t address the squad every year but wanted to introduce himself. Collins apparently was very rah-rah and Wright even said jhe as ready the most red in the face manager he’s seen. 

David also added that players would run through walls for Collins. It may be a bit early to declare that but BMF is still digging the early vibe from PSL.

I’m all for a hot under the collar manager. That’s why I wanted Valentine or Backman. As much of a Jerry fan as I was I’m looking forward to a little more fire in the dugout.

Look I’m certainly not rooting for Luis Castillo to win the starting second base job but it’s not fair to kill the guy for not arriving early to camp considering his brother was having major surgery.

While it’s hard to verify whether surgery in another country actually happened and is a legit excuse, you gotta give him the benifit of the doubt. 

Reporting dates are there for a reason, because you’re required to be in camp by that date - NOT before. 

So as long as Castillo was on time we can’t have a problem with that. 

I like that Collins thinks Luis is still spooked by the dropped pop-up. I really like that he spoke to the player about it and I love that he shared that with the press.
