Where’s Tonite’s Game???

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

You know you’re really starved for baseball when you’re complaining that SNY isn’t broadcasting tonite’s Mets/Marlins spring training game!

But considering a non-WBC delayed opening day would’ve been yesterday BMF’s biological baseball clock is ticking.

So now we’re left to watch UltiMet re-runs and Shea closing ceremonies again… of course there’s always American Idol…

Flurry of Activity for Mets!

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Wow! Just when you thought things were getting boring the Mets have their busiest spring day yet. Here’s a rundown of what happened:

• First and foremost Ollie Perez finally put together a solid outing! 1R, 4H, 1BB, 3K in 6.2 IP was a relief to see. Hopefully this means the wild lefty is on track for a consistent season… but I’m not holding my breath just yet…

.• General Manuel announced Daniel Murphy will be hitting 2nd and Luis Castillo will be in the 8-hole.

BRAVO Jerry!!! This is a huge victory and yet another example of how Manuel is a refreshing change from Willie Randolph. Willie would NEVER have chosen to slot a kid in the 2 hole over an aging vet. Thank God that guy is no longer here!

Murphy possesses a much greater upside than Castillo and I’m is happy to see the youngster rewarded for his hard work and dedication. Batting behind Reyes and in front of Wright, Delgado and Beltran in his first full season is literally the stuff dreams are made of.

• Manuel also “announced” that Livan Hernandez is our 5th starter. BMF is so utterly and completely lukewarm on Livan as a Met that I doubt I’ve been this uninspired by a Met pitcher since… well, since Bruce Berenyi!

• The Mets also signed Japanese pitcher Ken Takahashi to a minor league deal. The 39-year old lefty was released by Toronto after a calf injury torpedoed his chances of making the team as their 5th starter. Takahashi was a starter in Japan who was 8-5 3.50 ERA in 21 starts last year.

That was his career best ERA so I doubt the Mets project him to be a starter but rather another option in a pen starved for lefties. Even though he turns 40 in April I’ll definitely take a chance on a Japanese arm the league hasn’t seen as a situational lefty.

CityField - Thumbs Up!

Monday, March 30th, 2009

BMF was in the house for the first ever game at CityField and I’m here to say that stadium KICKS ASS!

Walking into our new home was a surreal experience. It was both exciting and kinda scary at the same time - sorta felt like an arranged marriage. Assuming I’ll never see another Met ballpark in my life I really wanted to fall in love with this one and live happily ever after.

Of course as a Met fan I feared they’d somehow manage to screw up the new digs and we’d be forced into 50 more years of living in Yankee Stadium’s shadow. Luckily that’s not the case.

.The Wilpons should be proud of their efforts because all that hard work and money has paid off. I haven’t seen the new stadium in BX yet but I predict CityField will reign supreme as the new crown jewel of NY/NJ stadiums!

BMF never even sat in my $5 seat or watched a full AB of the game (G’town beat St Johns 6-4). Instead we tried to walk every inch of the stadium to get as many looks at her as possible.

There are tons of cool things, which I’m sure we’ll be analyzing for months, but let it be known CityField is not without drawbacks. Mainly there are a ton of obstructed view seats. I’d guess that in more than half the stadium you can’t see into one OF corner or another. Some views are much worse than others but from the Pepsi pavilion you can’t even tell if a ball to deep RF is a HR or not.

Additionally you’ve also got a lot of overhangs that will cause fans to lose sight of routine high fly balls.

But I suppose this is the price you pay for a more intimate setting with seating closer to the field.

They also still haven’t managed to solve Shea’s issue of insanely long lines at the sausage carts. Maybe this is a tradition the Mets aren’t willing to let go but I highly recommend they roll out more sausage carts!

I’m also not crazy about the uniform green seats. A tribute to Ebbets field? Perhaps but BMF thinks it’s boring and sterile. The orange seats are iconic so I think they missed the boat on that one.

.The other good news is I didn’t feel overly assaulted by “CitiGroup” branding. I’d just assumed the bailed-out bank would have its name and horrendous logo staring at me from every angle but I was pleasantly surprised to that this wasn’t the case.

I also noticed there was a lot of empty billboard space on the scoreboards. Maybe they’re still putting them up but as of Sunday there were huge swaths of gray where ads would normally be.

Shout to Irish Mike and CW for the tix!

Catch BMF on SNY’s Sports Nite Monday AM

After bumping into SNY’s Michelle Yu reporting from the Jackie Robinson Rotunda BMF got interviewed and ended up with a sound-bite on Sunday night’s SportsNite.

It’s just a quick comment but it reruns mon AM every half hour til 10 and then 2x again at noon. I’m the guy in the Met hat talking about how my Dad would’ve loved the rotunda.

Meanwhile if you don’t know Michelle Yu, you should. She’s relatively new to SNY after working at NY1 and currently hosts the Sat 10P and 1A SportsNites as well as feature stories from the field all week long.

Keep an eye on her she’s good at what she does…

Murph2’s “IT” Factor

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Izzit just me or does anyone else feel like young Daniel Murphy is on the precipice of taking this town by storm!!

.I realize that’s a lot of pressure to put on a guy but Murphy somehow just has that “IT” Factor working for him.

I’d say the Murphy “IT” differs from the Reyes “IT”, or even the Wright “IT” because of Daniel’s workingman demeanor.

I mean you couldn’t really picture David Wright as a co-worker at your current job can you? He’s just too damn baby faced cute to suffer through the same misery the rest of us have to.

But Danny Murphy is just the kind of dude that could show up to work alongside of you. And you’d love him cuz he’s a hard worker and a cool hang to get through the day with.

It’s exactly that everyman aspect to Murphy that BMF believes can make him as big a star as anyone on the NY Mets.

The sky is the limit for a hard working, scrappy, blue-collar, over .300 hitting, balls to the walls defense playing, note taking in the dugout ball player!

.I’ve heard Don Mattingly’s name associated with Murphy but BMF would like to pay him an even higher compliment by calling the Met Wayne Chrebet.

Who didn’t love Chrebet?!? Even Dolphin fans liked that guy!

Because America loves scrappy white guys. And I don’t mean just white America – no I specifically mean Black, Asian and Latino Americans love rooting for great scrappy white athletes too. Everyone loves an underdog. Which is exactly what Daniel Murphy is… Despite the gigantically unrealistic expectations BMF just put on him!

Hold onto your hats sports fans because if Daniel Murphy becomes Daniel Murphy like BMF thinks he’s can it’s gonna be a helluva lot of fun to watch!

Btw I missed last week’s season premiere of Mets Weekly but BMF is looking forward to Saturday’s episode when they interview Murphy (12:30 on SNY)

New host Julie Alexandria (have to admit I’ll miss Jocelyn Pierce) plays Wii tennis against Murph2 in a segment I hope will prove my “Murphy’s a cool guy to hang with” theory.

Additionally they’ve also got new 3rd base coach Razor Shines mic’ed up during game and from what I can tell Razor Shines is also about to be a fan favorite.

Who Is Oliver Perez???

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Judging by yesterday’s outing vs the Detroit Tigers Oliver Perez is exactly who we fear he may be: 6R, 5H, 6BB, 4K in 3.2IP

Six walks is a VERY scary stat but since Perez spent more time with Team Mexico’s pitching coach than Dan Warthen this spring there’s no way to know what kind of season we’re looking at from the wild lefty. He could be nasty Ollie, he could be wild Ollie or most likely a maddening combination of both.

.Perez reportedly came back from the WBC with a loose and sloppy delivery so the question is can the Mets tighten him in before the season starts?

But as all Met fans know that’s only half the equation because even if he gets properly aligned by opening day the real trick is to remain consistent pitch after pitch, inning after inning and game after game. So goes life with Oliver Perez.

BMF remains a huge Ollie fan it’s just that I was hoping he’d be further along by March 25.

Meanwhile if Perez and Maine both perform below expectations we’re in BIG trouble.

Raise Your Hand If You’re Surprised Piazza Did Steroids

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

If you’re raising your hand you’re a naïve fellow – or lady. Not that that’s a bad thing but let’s be honest for a second here – during the juice era EVERYONE was on the stuff!

That’s a bit of an exaggeration I suppose - but not much.

According to Jeff Pearlman’s new book Piazza’s power was well know to be chemically enhanced. Allegedly Piazza even told some members of the media off the record that he juiced.

PiazzaPiazza juiced, A-Rod juiced, Clemens juiced – they all juiced!

Hell I‘ll take some juice right now if it can net me a multi-million dollar contract for BMF’ing

Now can we please move on so I don’t have to hear anymore about Piazza’s back-acne!!!

Go Away Freddy Garcia!

BMF was all for the Garcia experiment when it started but I can no longer stand listening to the constant updates on how freakin’ BAD he is.

Yesterday the Garcia news was his demotion to the minors. The day before his line against those same minor leaguers was: 3R, 8H, in 4IP – BLEECH!!!

Can we please just release him and save us the aggravation of future updates about terrible minor league starts? Or maybe Omar wants him around in case we need a spot start from an awful pitcher who won’t last more than 4 innings.

***

Word is D-Train is on the verge of getting released by the Tigers after a horrible spring. Dontrelle is owed 22M over the next 2 years but if the Mets can pick him up on the cheap after his release I say lets take a chance on a minor league deal.

Unlike Garcia, Willis strikes me as a guy who actually might have some gas left in the tank.

Word is the Tigers modified his signature high leg kick in an effort to improve his poor command but it obviously hasn’t worked.

The thing is D-Train is only 27 and won 22 games as recently as ’05. He did throw a ton of innings as a Marlin so maybe that took its toll, or perhaps he was a PED guy, but either way I’d definitely roll some cheap dice with him should he come available.
