Mets to NL “Get out the Way!”

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

With another mauling of the Rockies and having won 11 of 12 the rest of the National League has officially been put on notice to “Get out the M’F’in’ way because the NY Mets are here to whip your ass!”

That’s right, the Mets and BMF’s confidence is brimming and it’s now reached the point of World Series or Bust! We all know BMF is on record as predicting a championship in Queens this fall and the Mets have done nothing to dispel that theory. God I love this team!

CoorsThe march to the NL East Crown continued wednesday night by racking up 11 runs on 12 hits in Colorado. BMF is now calling b*llsh*t on the Rockies alleged humidor and is adding it to the list of American conspiracies next to JFK and Area-51. “Humididor” or not the Mets pulverized the over matched Rockies for a second consecutive night.

Dave Williams might feel differently about the humidity levels of the Rockies’ baseballs since he threw a great game - 7ip, 9h, 1bb, 3er, 5k. You certainly can’t ask for anything more from your #13 starter can you?!? Is Omar Minaya King Midas this season or what? As if you needed any more evidence Dave “Freakin” Williams keeps turning in quality starts! World Series or not BMF may start a pledge drive to erect a statue for Omar in front of the yet to be built new stadium.

Looks like David Wright is back on track going 2-5 with 5 ribbies, including a 1st inning Grand Slam. It was great to see Wright bang one out, it seems like he’d been stuck on 22 forever. Just think of the possibilities of Wright, Reyes, Delgado, and Beltran all hitting in the post season. Not to mention Lo Duca, Green, Valentin and Chavez. Oh yeah and Cliff Floyd too…maybe. That’s an American League lineup for cryin’ out loud!

Which reminds me that I caught a few minutes of that fat-head Michael Kay on ESPN radio wednesday afternoon. He declared the Yankees were a better team than the Mets. As a matter of fact he went on to say that he didn’t “buy” our pitching, “Pedro would have been rocked if he pitched in the AL this year and Glavine and Trachsel’s stuff won’t hold up in the playoffs” Shut the F*ck up Michael Kay! Have you ever heard of a guy named El Duque you douschbag??? I know you’re so far up the yankees asses they can do no wrong, but guess what a-hole, the Mets have better pitching than your precious yankees! And quite frankly I hope we meet in a Subway Series so we can dispose of that bloated, egomaniacal, metrosexual yankee team!

MascotI still have to ask: How is it Jose Valentin is not on the ballot for ComeBack Player of the Year???? This is a gross oversight by whoever makes these decisions at MLB. Valentin is now fully recovered from his hamstring tweak and proved it by blasting 2 more homeruns. Jose is yet another jewel in Minaya’s King Midas crown.

Quick Hits:

• I don’t know who the Hell was behind that impostor Mr. Met that turned up outside Coors Field wednesday night but he sure was dancing up a storm. BMF isn’t sure whether to applaud or ridicule the paper-mache Mr. Met…the floor is open BMF’ers did you like him or did you want to bash him with a broom handle like a piñata?

• Did anyone else notice the guy who caught Wright’s Grand Slam was the same guy who later caught Delgado’s HR! Imagine that, BMF has NEVER caught a ball at a game and this joker catches 2!

• When was he last time you saw the appeal play work? Well, the Rox got Dave “Freakin” Williams who missed 3rd base on his way home off Reyes’ double. They appealed and he sure enough he was called out. I guess baserunning isn’t William’s forte but when your team scores 11 runs a night you can afford to miss a base here and there!

• What a Brooks Robinson-esque play by D-Wright to go to his right to snag a ball and fire it across his body to get the runner at first! Hey Mike Fransecca I don’t hear you knocking Wright’s defense these days do I??? I’ll take Wright over your purple lipsticked G-Rod every day of the week.

• Roy Oswalt got a HUGE contract extension - $73M for 5 years. Upon hearing this BMF finds it hard to believe the Astros were ever serious about the rumored Milledge for Oswalt deal. How could they trade a guy who they’re gonna turn around and pay that much money to? It’s moot now but it must’ve just been tabloid talk all along.

• Omar’s latest “Pickup of the year” Guillermo Mota dispatched the Rockies 1-2-3 in the 9th. This guy has looked absolutely sick for us! Can you say, “steal of a deal”???

• All Hail Omar!

Good Old Coors Field Welcomes Mets

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

BMF was struck down with a mid grade migraine tuesday night so because my brain isn’t quite up to the task of forming full paragraphs I’m gonna keep it simple with a series of Quick Hits:

• Humidor? What humidor??? If the rumors are true that the Rockies are storing their balls in a humidor to keep the offense down someone forgot to tell the Mets. It was good old fashioned Coors Field as far as the Orange and Blue were concerned as they banged out 10 runs on 14 hits.

Coors• Keith Hernandez battled the word humidor all night as he kept saying “Humididor”. Ahh, Mex - we luv ya, baby!

•The real Kaz Matsui finally stood up tues night, too bad it wasn’t until he reached Colorado. BMF has no anger towards the nervous little asian econo car. I always liked the guy and will continue to root for him. I actually hope he comes back to the Rockies next year and plays well. The kid always played hard he just got flustered in NYC and couldn’t ever turn it around.

• SNY first reported that Steve Trachsel averaged just under 9 runs of support / game. Later they showed a graphic that said somewhere in the 5.6 range. Maybe my brain is clouded with migraine trauma but this didn’t make any sense to me.

• Trachs looked shaky all night but actually managed to turn in a quality start. He did a great job of getting out of trouble again and again.

BK Kim?• It helped Trachs that he was matched up against BK Kim who was rocked for the second consecutive outing. BMF has always wondered how a guy whose name is Byung-Hyun Kim is nicknamed “BK Kim”?!?! It doesn’t make any sense at all if you think about it.

• How ‘bout Carlos Beltran’s ripping his career high 39th HR and 110th rbi of the year. Beltran is closing in quickly on Todd Hundley’s franchise record 41 HRs in a season. I can’t wait for Beltran to erase Hundley’s name as the Met’s all time leader. No disrespect to the ex-Met catcher but he’s not worthy of owning that record. Piazza’s 124 ribbies is also in jeopardy. Remember when people were saying that Beltran wasn’t really a HR hitter??? LOL!!! In my recollection it was mostly yankee fans talking that smack.

• So far so good for Shawn Green who has 5 rbi in his first 5 games as a Met.

• Jose Reyes had another fine night at shortstop not to mention an opposite field homerun. Gotta love it when our shortstop goes “oppo”!

• The Rockie defense looked terrible especially Brad Hawpe who must’ve had Deja-Vu with almost identical dives and misses on David Wright and Carlos Delgado shots down the right field line. It was hilarious if you’re not a Rockie fan when both went for triples. Hawpe also misplayed an easy pop up from Endy Chavez who hustled it into a double.

• Willie has said he isn’t going to expand to a full 40 men on sept 1st. He’ll bring up a bunch of guys but he doesn’t believe in crowding the clubhouse with tons of extra players. BMF likes it. Keep everyone focused on the task at hand while bringing up the Milledges, Bannisters and Pelfreys of the organization.

USS Maine Sinks Philly Again

Monday, August 28th, 2006

John Maine has now beaten the Phillies three times this month! You’d think the fightin’ Phils would have seen him enough recently to have generated a little more offense but an early start on what should have been an off day combined with the young righty proved to be too much. Maine bounced back from his last start by limiting Philly to 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk in 6.1 innings. BMF sees this as very good news for the Mets since our pitching staff has been in such disarray lately. Of course we’re all planning on Pedro, Glavine, and el Duque going 1-2-3 in the playoffs but if we need a fourth starter or someone breaks down Johnny M is looking like a very viable option.

MaineIt was a weird day at Shea. In this season of 45,000 fans at nearly every single game a mere 8,766 faithful passed through the turnstiles monday afternoon. It was borderline bizarre to see our boys play in an almost empty Shea. Big Props to the fans in attendance though, they were a feisty bunch and made plenty of noise especially when the Mets batted around (again) in the 3rd. Have you ever seen a Met team bat around as frequently as these guys do??? It’s really unbelievable. I’m trying to soak it all in as much as possible - these magical teams don’t come around too often.

Another moment from the files of “Never seen that before” was David Wright’s ball that skipped just past third base. It bounced on the outside of the bag in foul territory but suddenly kicked off to the side as if it had hit the base. When the third base ump called it foul Manny Acta immediately protested which sent Willie running from the dugout. Replay’s proved inconclusive and it actually looked like the ump’s call was correct, but physics made you believe it must’ve hit the bag.

WagsGood job by the boys in blue to huddle up and overturn the original call. I can only guess the Home plate ump saw it hit the bag since he was the only one with a viable angle. The weird thing was they awarded Wright only first base. It was a clear cut double down the line for someone of Wright’s speed. I suppose the rational may have been Delgado wouldn’t have made it to third or maybe an obscure rule says a play called dead and then overturned results only in a single? Don’t know but either way the struggling D-Wright was happy for anything he could get!

As mentioned, Maine was great except for a 2 run blast by “Met Killer” Pat Burrell. Burrell’s 803rd HR off the Mets didn’t hurt since Maine had already been staked to a 6 run lead at the time. And of course Ryan Howard got Guillermo Mota for another monster blast but as BMF always says, ”It’s Ryan Howard so whatcha gonna do?!?” It looks like Burrell has worn out his welcome in the city of Brotherly Love. Here’s hoping he ends up in the AL next year.

GirlsBMF was actually glad to see Mota give up a run. Consecutive scoreless innings streaks are great but I don’t want the added pressure of a guy bringing a streak like that into the playoffs. I know we’ve not there yet, but still. The occasional meaningless homerun is just fine by me - and hey it was Ryan Howard so what the F!

Quick Hits:

• Is Philly manager Charlie Manuel not the whitest guy in baseball??? He’s got pasty white skin that turns pink when exposed to sun. It hurts to just look at him. I can just feel the skin cancer taking hold!

• Next up: Colorado to see our old friend Kaz Matsui!

Rainouts Suck

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

BMF hates a rainout on a sunday afternoon - especially when your football team already played on friday night! It was a quiet day, for a change, on the Mets front and we’ve got an early 12:10 game monday so I’m gonna keep it short. Although I will raise a question I’ve been pondering lately.

SheaWe all know the MVP talk has been swirling around Carlos “Grand Slam” Beltran lately and he may very well walk away with the hardware this off season. No doubt he’s having a season worthy of the honor but what if you were starting a team from scratch and you could pluck only one player off the Mets - who would you take? Carlos Beltran definitely wouldn’t be a bad choice, neither would David Wright. But if BMF is playing imaginary GM I’m drafting Jose Reyes to be the first brick in the foundation of my new team.

I don’t think Reyes’ tools are as easily found as Wright or even Beltran. Jose Reyes stands above everyone else as far as his combination of speed, defense, and now even power from the shortstop. There are a handful of guys who can hit you 40 homers and drive in 100+ but nobody has the disruptive speed that makes things happen the way Reyes does. Who else in the game of baseball can match Jose Reyes’ skills??? No one.

The best news of all for Met fans is that whether you choose Reyes, Wright, or Beltran there is no wrong answer!

Now let’s win this series against the Phillies today.

Mets Win on New Guy Nite at Shea

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

Now that’s what I’m talking about! A little punishment for these uppity Philllies - they deserve it! Oliver Perez and Shawn Green each put their stamp on saturday night’s game. Perez alternated between brilliance and control issues while Shawn Green broke a tie with a bases loaded double. The Hebrew Hammer drove a double into the left field corner to knock in 2 including the eventual game winner. You could feel the energy at Shea - Mets fans are already behind the new guys.

SheaBMF was very happy with Ollie Perez’ performance. Most importantly he still has good stuff. His fastball was moving and his slider was devastating at times but control is an issue. Perez let us see some emotion after wiggling out of a first inning 2 walk jam. When he K’d Pat Burrell he pumped his fist and bounded off the mound like Oil Can Boyd. BMF LOVES it! The kid is excited to be back in the big leagues and on this team. He should be excited!

He pitched well aside from that terrible 0-2 pitch Ryan Howard turned into a grand slam. Although that pitch is unforgivable there’s no shame in Ryan Howard getting you… don’t I say that every Phillie game??? I’d like to see Ollie get another start but he’s of no real use to this team in 2006. But Perez is the perfect candidate for Rick Peterson’s golden touch. God only knows what he was being taught in the minor leagues of the Pirate organization. Get him down to Alabama this winter and let RP hook him up to those plastic balls and analyze his motion. Come next spring we may have a viscous 25 yr old lefty on the staff.

Shawn Green had his “Became a Met” moment when the Phils walked David Wright in front of him to load the bases. Green responded with an 0-2 double into the corner to give the Mets the lead and send Shea into a frenzy. He looks like a little leaguer in the outfield the way he wears his cap. I guess he likes the bill to point up and he must wear it loose since it flies off when he runs for a ball. But it doesn’t fly off like Willie Mays it’s more like a little leaguer in a cap that’s too big.

C y CThe hits keep coming for Carlos y Carlos who both homered in a game for the 10th time this season. Beltran’s first inning shot was a classic Beltran rocket that was gone-off-the-bat. Even Gary Cohen couldn’t help himself, immediately blurting out, “THAT’ S GONE!” which blew his chance to use his “signature call.” I don’t mind a signature call when it’s used properly but Gary’s “It’s Outta Here” isn’t appropriate on a no-doubt-about-it blast. Unfortunately he usually forces the call on us anyway. BMF is hoping Cohen’s alternate call today wasn’t just an impulse as much as a change in philosophy. I doubt it’ll last since Cohen seemed to be momentarily frozen with nothing to say as the ball landed beyond the wall.

Delgado is so hot that his bases loaded sacrifice fly advanced all three runners. Props were really due to Beltran who hustled from first to second. Reyes on third sensed the same thing and gave Lo Duca a third base coach point to also tag up. Ron Darling commented on how happy Reyes was when he saw all his “Base-mates” advance. BMF has never heard the word “Base-mates” before but if Ron Darling said it, it must be true.

Quick Hits:

• Great play by third base coach Many Acta to send Delgado but hold Wright on Green’s double. Wright had run right up on Delgado and was about 2 strides behind him, but Acta immediately flashed the stop sign after waving Delgado in. Perfect call as Carlos beat the throw and Wright would’ve been out.

• Fantastic diving catch by Jose Valentin to snag a line drive up the middle. Valentin got a great jump off the bat exploding to his right to make the play. This is very good news re: his hamstring.

• They walked Wright to face Green who doubled to left. Then they walked Valentin to get to the BLBB but Endy doubled to right. Hey they don’t call him the Best Little Bastard in Baseball for nuthin’!

Phillies 4 Beltran 3

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

First of all BMF ain’t scared about no jinx so let’s get that out of the way right now. I believe in this team and I’m here to tell you about it. I’m also here to tell you that the Phillies are playing us very tough right now. We wiped out the Padres when they came in leading the West, we swept Cards who came in leading the central too so if the 14.5 games back Phillies beat us with Brian Banister on the mound: No - Sweat - At - All.

BeltranCall it nerves, call it adrenaline, call it whatever you want but BB allowed hits to the first 3 batters. After Ryan Howard’s sac fly Bannister settled down, allowing only a 2 run shot to Howard the rest of the way. Throw out that 1st inning and he surrendered only 2 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings. Under normal circumstances this would warrant another start but with the disarray the Met staff is currently in who knows…

It was vintage Brian Bannister in the 5th as he allowed a lead off triple to the Flyin’ Hawaiian but wiggled off the hook without allowing the run to score. Did I just say “Vintage Bannister”??? Unbelievable! But we all know the rap on Bannister his first time around was he’d get into and out of a lot of trouble. He did manage two 1-2-3 innings including his final frame the 6th. SNY gave us a good shot of Tom Glavine approaching double B in the dugout, shaking his hand, and offering congratulations on the outing. Bannister who was sitting next to Maine in the “Non-Hall of Fame Pitcher” section of the bench looked very appreciative of the gesture.

FanBMF respects this Philly team possibly more than anyone else in the NL. Whether it’s a case of somehow matching up well against us or they just have our number I don’t like playing them. But since the Phillies may not make the playoffs the Dodgers could be the toughest team we’ll see in the first 2 rounds.

This is the second consecutive series that we’ve got one of Beltran’s MVP competitors in the house and as previously mentioned Ryan Howard produced by crushing his 45th HR and driving in run number 117! He’s a MONSTER but if his team doesn’t make the playoffs he’s not getting the MVP. It seems whenever the ‘other guy’ makes some noise Beltran answers in style. Carlos accounted for all 3 Met runs including his 37th jack and 106th RBI. Carlos smoked another line drive over the wall but this one came from the right side. Beltran is rounding into prime-time shape as we get closer to the fall. Again BMF is glad to see more power at home to quiet any talk of him not hitting at Shea. Let’s leave that A-Rod choker crap to the yankee fans.

Quick Hits:

• Chris Woodward made another great play to snare a line drive at going into right. Woody is an underrated player on this team. He doesn’t have very sexy stats but the guy plays anywhere and his infield D is superb.

• Ron Darling had a great line in reference to a stat called “Games per Hold” The Yale graduate said, “I don’t know what that stat is and I don’t care.” Darling does a great job in the booth telling it like it is. Mex tells it like it is too, but in a different way…

• Jose Reyes torked his already tweaked left wrist by sliding into Jimmy Rollins’ foot as he swiped his 54th base of the season. He stayed in the game but later dropped a perfect throw from Lo Duca that would’ve cut down a Phillie stealing second. It was a tough play and there’s no way to know if the wrist was an issue, but it bears watching.

• How about Julio Franco with a 2 out pinch hit single in the 9th to keep hope alive. Unfortunately Jose Reyes struck out on a high and wide fastball. It’s rare to see Jose chase those pitches anymore. He’s come a very long way.

• In case you missed it here’s a link to the Mets all time Web Gems.
